Cindy Luis covers University of Hawaii volleyball for the Star-Advertiser. She began her career as a sports journalist in Hawaii in 1981 with the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and was the sports editor, assistant sports editor, columnist and beat writer during a 31-year span before the paper became the Star-Advertiser. She graduated from UCLA in 1977 with a B.A. in Communication Studies.

U.S. tops Brazil 3-1 to open USA Volleyball Cup; replay available

U.S. win 25-22, 25-27, 25-19, 25-19 in front of about 4,000 at UCI’s Bren Events Center. final two points were on a block by Akinradewoand an ace by Jordan Larson-Burbach If you were trying to watch the line stream, they had some technical difficulties. U.S. swept by host Serbia in World League

Serbia wins 25-21, 25-20, 25-17. Second straight loss for the Americans, third in their last four. Setter Christenson started the first two sets, Kawika Shoji started the third. Erik Shoji was the libero Taylor Sander with 13 kills, Christenson with a block.

USA men swept by Russia 6-28

U.S. loses 25-21, 25-19, 25-21 to Russia Saturday in Kaliningrad. Christenson set. K. Shoji came in in Set 3, don’t know if it was to set or as a serving sub. E. Shoji at libero. Anderson with 14 kills and a block, Taylor Sander with 13 kills. U.S. outblocked 9-4, 3-1 in aces.  they are 8-2 with 2 matches left next weekend in Serbia. U.S. men rally past Russia in 5 in World League

U.S. def. Russia 25-18, 25-19, 25-27, 19-25, 21-19 today (Friday) in Kaliningrad, Russia. Crowd announced at 7,000. It clinches a spot in the World League final round next month in Italy. Christenson set the whole match, E. Shoji at libero. Bourne, Hyden win beach gold

Aiea’s Tri Bourne partnered with John Hyden of Florida to win their first World Tour beach volleyball gold medal on Sunday, defeating compatriots and fellow qualifiers Ryan Doherty and John Lucena 21-17, 21-11 in an all-American final at the FIVB Berlin Grand Slam in Germany.
