But the Rainbow Wahine figure to move up after defeating No. 5 Arizona State 10-7 at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex on Saturday. Water polo opens with a splash

By Brian McInnis on January 19, 2019

That’s how you start as the No. 6 team in the country. The Hawaii water polo team opened the 2019 season in fine fashion by dispatching No. 22 Marist 17-3 on Saturday afternoon at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. UH did that despite working in several freshmen and playing without its No. 2 player, Elyse Lemay-Lavoie, who just left for Brazil for competition with the Canadian national team. Senior Irene Gonzalez of Spain picked up where she left off from […]

Hawaii has been ranked in the CWPA national preseason poll every year since 2009 — and 2019 was no different. Maureen Cole’s Rainbow Wahine, who checked in in a tie for sixth in the poll announced Wednesday, will have no shortage of opportunities to maintain or better their position through their 21-game schedule. UH opens against No. 22 Marist at noon on Saturday at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex, then Sonoma State at 6 p.m. that night. It’s the second straight […]

By Jason Kaneshiro on March 2, 2018

Hawaii water polo coach Maureen Cole knows better than to put much stock in UC Irvine’s record. The Anteaters visit Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex on Saturday for the Big West opener at 4-8, next to last in the conference entering the week. But upon closer examination, all of UCI’s losses have come against teams ranked in the top seven of this week’s Collegiate Water Polo Association rankings — No. 1 Stanford, No. 2 USC, No. 3 UCLA (in overtime), No. 4 […]

The sixth-ranked University of Hawaii water polo team opened the season by splitting matches with No. 4 California and No. 22 Loyola Marymount in the Rainbow Invite on Saturday at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.   California’s Anna Illes and Emma Wright scored three goals each to lead the Golden Bears to a 9-4 win over UH.  Cal led 3-0 in the second quarter before UH closed the gap on goals by Claire Nixon and Maartje Keuning. Rare home opener for Wahine water polo

By Jason Kaneshiro on January 19, 2018

A veteran University of Hawaii water polo team opens a new season on Saturday under a rather unfamiliar circumstance — at home. For the first time since 2000, the program’s third year of existence, the Rainbow Wahine will begin a season in their own pool when they host the four-team Rainbow Invite this weekend at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. “Weird, but exciting,” seventh-year UH coach Maureen Cole said of opening at home. “We’ve always gotta fly across the Pacific before […]

UH water polo dives back into Big West play

By Jason Kaneshiro on March 29, 2017

Whether her players know it or not, Hawaii water polo coach Maureen Cole decided to ease up a bit in practice during a week off from competition. After opening their first homestand of the season with a one-goal loss to No. 1 USC and a resounding win over No. 13 Indiana, the Rainbow Wahine had 10 days to prepare for a run of three matches against ranked opponents over the next three days. While the Rainbow Wahine used the time […]
