Warriors AVCA preseason No. 3; SandBows schedule out

Hawaii was picked No. 3 in the AVCA preseason poll; defending national champion Long Beach State was the unanimous No. 1, with UCLA No. 2.

The SandBows’ schedule was ready a few weeks ago, but I think they were waiting on contracts and sponsors.

There’s good home and away matches.

Kickoff tourney with UCLA Stanford Pepperdine Saint Mary’s Feb 23-24 @ Queens

Nebraska, for again & AGAIN, televised.

    U-Dub, also, at The Ching.
*I can’t believe that UW is in a NCAAT Regional Semi currently.
**Do now believe that UH would have come up short against OU–had they beat Baylor … 2017-18 Baylor, what a turn on heels, moreover, playing against na Wahine.

Not nebraska again :/why not televise a match up against ucla, pepp, cp or usc.
Nebraska seems to use their beah matches here as a spring break for their indoor team.

1-2. Schedule is what it is. It also depends on who can stay for a single match outside of tournament play.
Nebraska does not have a true beach team, Huskers pretty much use their indoor team

Nebraska has Lexi Sun. I don’t mind seeing them.

To Today’s Tournament: Oregon plays an INCREDIBLE match to upset. 2nd seeded Minnesota in 4. Yesss!! The 2nd set was like so dramatic with Oregon taking it 41-39.
Oregon’s win makes the Hawaii and Baylor playoffs look great. I heard Oregon’s HC talk after on broadcast and she was so delighted to beat Minnesota in their house. Minnesota has never lost a match at home this year. Plus she said people were very rude and cocky. (Even an elderly lady before the match made a sarcastic comment towards her team entering the arena) I guess since San Diego got swept today by Wisconsin, now I am pulling for the Oregon Ducks. We have a local Kamehameha athlete as a back-up Libero (Kyra Hanawahine)
    Lets Go Ducks!!!

Cindy, sorry I couldn’t wait for new thread

#5…….I thought University of Oregon’s head coach is Matt Ulmer. Where does the “she” come from? Was there another person representing Oregon? Does Matt Ulmer look like a “she” or something?

  8. rabbit ears December 7, 2018 3:45 pm

Really thought Minnesota was going all the way. That’s why they play the match you never know. Nebraska vs Oregon now, should be a great match.

    5. You are right…i meant the AC (Assistant Coach) She went to talk to radio personality while Coach Matt went to address the team…No ack

  10. Bleachercoach December 7, 2018 5:23 pm

8….Yes I thought it would be either Minnesota or Stanford

did the pressure get to minnesota? they were poised to host the entire tournament, if they could stay in it. in that first set, it looked like minnesota just had too many weapons.

but oregon exposed the weaknesses of minnesota, in serve-receive and in floor defense. samedy is a fantastic attacker, but her floor defense at right back was so suspect. that’s going to be exposed against an oregon team, whose setter raskie liked to attack on 2. and vander weide hit a lot of line last night as well, to great effect.

but stone was the show-stopper. thoroughly enjoyable watching her last night.

i feel bad for minnesota. i really like their program, but from a fan-of-the-sport perspective, it was a fantastic match!

Illinois looked good vs Wisconsin winning 3-1. Wahine lost to Illinois last season in the NCAA 1st round 2-3.

  13. islandman December 8, 2018 3:48 pm

Former UH QB Dan Robinson’s daughter, 5-10 freshman, Madelyn plays OH for BYU. Was mentioned on the TV telecast of the match vs Texas.

  14. Bleachercoach December 8, 2018 4:26 pm

Although I am not a BYU fan, I must say their (students) and their fans really brings it! That’s what you call the 7th Man! I guess if we had the old sweat box KLUM GYM, we could maybe match it.
I know Hawaii Volleyball (men and women don’t like playing there) The environment is extreme loud and they make the opponents play out of sorts

  15. Bleachercoach December 8, 2018 4:38 pm

Freshman, Jhenna Gabriel, former 2017 Maryknoll High School VB setter is in the match now setting for Texas. She is doing a fine job…Great to see more Hawaii athletes playing in Power 5 Conferences.
Just like how TUA-man playing at Roll tide!

BYU finally defeated Texas in three very close sets with supreme grit and determination. Glad I can now watch the Stanford-Penn State regional final.

    15. Did UH try to recruit Gabriel ?

  18. cappie the dog December 8, 2018 10:02 pm

    Thank you, Stanford.

I can’t stand to see Penn State win at anything.

  19. Bleachercoach December 8, 2018 10:06 pm

    17. I don’t know Hawaii tried to grab her, but I know Jerritt Eliott recruited her. I know her dad, Daryl Gabriel an outstanding football and basketball player at Punahou ’79. His brother is Garrett Gabriel another fantastic QB
    The genes are all there!

  20. islandman December 9, 2018 9:37 am

    17. Thanks for the info, was wondering if she was related to those Gabriels.
I hope for BYU or Illinois to win the whole thing. Stanford and Nebraska have won it too many times already. Interested in BYU because of Dan Robinson’s daughter.

  21. Kahuna December 9, 2018 9:48 am

Jhenna is also the cousin of Mililani QB Dillion Gabriel. Athletic background aplenty in this family.

  22. Kahuna December 9, 2018 10:01 am

I have seen Jhenna’s Mom and Dad at many arena sporting events so they are UH supporters. However, I think the parent are one of those family that encourage their kids to go away and experience life on the mainland. Kind of like the Ma’a and Shoji family. The kids can always come back home like Daryl did after going to LMU for college.

My guess is even UH recruited Jhenna, it’s unlikely she would have came any way.

Any last minute transfers for the SandBows?

  24. Warriorfan December 10, 2018 4:34 am

R23 I would like hall to pursue Roni Jones Perry from BYU, she said she would not mind playing beach after the Texas win, she’s a terrific athlete.

Regarding Jamie Houston on the previous post. Houston was AVCA All-America third team in 2006, Honorable Mention in 2007, and second team in 2008. That means she was All-Region first team all three years.

The media guide has some errors. They failed to list Alicia Arnott as All-Region HM in 2004. Also, Brittany Hewitt was All-Region HM in 2011, not first team.

    new thread up for Monday
    thanks for all the recaps.
    23. Not that I’m aware of. Magilio returns I believe end of this month.
    25. yes there are errors. I will let them know. PDF of media guide hasn’t been updated in several years
