  1. Cindy Luis August 26, 2017 7:11 pm

Those not cleared tonight (wearing gray) Burns, Guinasso, Ma’fala.
starting Granato, Williams, Iosia, Kahakai, Castillo, Maglio, Ross. not sure where Maglio and Castillo are playing. one will be the OH, the other MB

  2. Cindy Luis August 26, 2017 7:16 pm

Maglio on the left. puts down Hawaii’s first kill

  3. Cindy Luis August 26, 2017 7:20 pm

USD up 7-3. TO UH. Toreros had only 3 blocks against UCLA last night. have 3 already.

  4. Hot August 26, 2017 7:23 pm

Ross is on a reeeaaaaalllly long leash.

  5. Warriorfan August 26, 2017 7:23 pm

Bad passing= high offense to ross and granato is bad bad news for wahine.

  6. Warriorfan August 26, 2017 7:25 pm

Ross and granato really arent helping themselves with their passing and senior libero still struggling also:/

  7. Ashley August 26, 2017 7:26 pm

so tired of the Mckennas right now. last night it’s Granato, tonight it’s Ross. i prefer Kendra, what happen to her?

  8. 808wahine August 26, 2017 7:27 pm

Not much improvement from last night. Same line up, same hitting into the blocks. We just lack intensity

  9. 808wahine August 26, 2017 7:28 pm

Norene keeping us in the game with her serving.

  10. Warriorfan August 26, 2017 7:33 pm

Ok they settled down now and passing has steadied out a bit. They can’t have such slow starts each set.

  11. T103 August 26, 2017 7:33 pm

Can’t wait till that middle connection between Williams and Iosia, can tell that Williams isn’t hitting the middle set at her highest peak, just wait…..

  12. Cindy Luis August 26, 2017 7:35 pm

Hawaii with its first lead 20-19, block by Williams and Maglio. TO USD

  13. Cindy Luis August 26, 2017 7:36 pm

IMHO let them get a feel for the game. Hawaii has had slow starts for years.

  14. Warriorfan August 26, 2017 7:38 pm

IMO when Sky gets stronger she can be Olivia Magill like she already has the smarts to better low sets like Olivia used to.

  15. Cindy Luis August 26, 2017 7:39 pm

UH was up 23-20, USD has pulled to 23-22. TO UH

  16. Ashley August 26, 2017 7:40 pm

just a question for anyone who’s played sports. i noticed that Robin unlike Dave, she never sits down. she is literally patrolling the sidelines. do you think that her constantly standing right there affects the players play? i never played sports before, so i don’t know if that does or does not affect the way a player plays. i was just curious that’s all.

  17. Cindy Luis August 26, 2017 7:43 pm

USD uses 4-0 tun to pull it out 25-23
Toreros got a way with a lift.

  18. Warriorfan August 26, 2017 7:44 pm

Yikes not good to give up 5 in a row.
ross has got to tool every set, thats the only way she can be successful.

  19. Warriorfan August 26, 2017 7:45 pm

    Time for Iosia to become
    More offensive minded.

  20. Cindy Luis August 26, 2017 7:45 pm

thanks WF It was 5-0. much like last night.

  21. Cindy Luis August 26, 2017 7:48 pm

Sibley in for first time this season

  22. Cindy Luis August 26, 2017 7:55 pm

another 5-0 run by the Toreros and it’s 10-5 in Set 2. TO UH

  23. Lori August 26, 2017 7:59 pm

I don’t think we can blame the coaching for all these issues. At some point, the players have to go out there and play the game. The coaches can only do so much. That is why Dave never takes all the credit and he credits the players with all the accolades he receives.

  24. 808wahine August 26, 2017 8:00 pm

Ouch! Overpass by MG. Falling apart

  25. 808wahine August 26, 2017 8:01 pm

Unless they can turn this around we are going to get swept in 3.

  26. Cindy Luis August 26, 2017 8:01 pm

No bueno. USD up 17-8. TO UH

  27. Warriorfan August 26, 2017 8:02 pm

This is hard to watch they do not look like an ncaa tournament team right now.

  28. Cindy Luis August 26, 2017 8:10 pm

USD takes Set 2 25-13. and it wasn’t that close.

  29. z August 26, 2017 8:12 pm

    Getting beaten in every category.

  30. Cindy Luis August 26, 2017 8:20 pm

Koelsch to outside, Maglio to middle for Set 3.

  31. Maverick August 26, 2017 8:21 pm

Because folks will ask, UH started the season 0-2 several times: 1976, 1980, 2001, 2005, and 2016. UH started 0-3 in 1980, and was 1-3 in 1978, 1980, 1992, and 2005. UH has never started 0-4 or 1-4.

Assuming this team continues to play as observed, 0-3 is probable, with Western Carolina slated for match 4 of the season, with South Dakota in match 5.

  32. Cindy Luis August 26, 2017 8:33 pm

USD challenging whether Maglio’s kill was in or out.

  33. Kimo603 August 26, 2017 8:37 pm

Wonder why Kalei is not playing?

  34. Cindy Luis August 26, 2017 8:38 pm

    because she’s hurt

  35. Cindy Luis August 26, 2017 8:42 pm

the challenge ended up not being good. original call stands. UH now up 19-16.

  36. Ashley August 26, 2017 8:42 pm

maybe it’s just me who feels this way, but i think Kalei should redshirt. that is still possible for her to do right?

  37. Maverick August 26, 2017 8:42 pm

To answer a question from last night, UH was unranked from 11/3/92 through the end of 1992 season. UH has appeared in all other polls.

If UH comes back to win tonite, it has a slim shot to still be ranked even with a loss to UCLA tomorrow night. UH and USD would have the only losing records for teams ranked 20-29. No ranking for UH with an 0-3 start.

  38. Cindy Luis August 26, 2017 8:43 pm

USD has closed to 19-18. TO UH

  39. Cindy Luis August 26, 2017 8:45 pm

    31. last season was first time 0-2 in the SSC.

  40. Cindy Luis August 26, 2017 8:47 pm

    USD up 22-20. TO UH

  41. Cindy Luis August 26, 2017 8:51 pm

    USD wins 25-21

  42. Cindy Luis August 26, 2017 10:03 pm

well that was pretty ugly. just got told no interviews because Ah Mow-Santos has the team over in Gym 1 practicing. Ouch.

  43. oldtimer808 August 26, 2017 10:25 pm

I wish our Rainbow Wahines well and I hope recovery can happen soon. The way I see it, the coaches should take the ladies into the practice gym and play 6 on 6. Have competitive scrimmages and forget the two hour technique training. If the ladies don’t have the proper techniques at this level than going over basics for the majority of practice is a waste of time. The ladies are not in cohesion offensively and pitting the A team against the B team will get them flowing again. I think this was Dave’s secret. Anyway who am I to give any advise. I wish the team well.

  44. oldtimer808 August 26, 2017 10:28 pm

I’ve never seen our Hawaii team look so lost on the floor with players running into each other.

  45. oldtimer808 August 26, 2017 10:33 pm

I don’t normally say this but these losses are on the coaches for not preparing this team to be aggressive and flowing as a team in the offensive sets.

  46. hollycow August 26, 2017 10:50 pm

Hopefully they’ll get out of Gym 1 by midnight. That 9 to 2 run in the last set was the last straw for Robyn.

  47. Maverick August 26, 2017 10:55 pm

Maybe the answer is that this team really isn’t all that talented. Perhaps Nikki Taylor’s strengths and Annie Mitchem’s power masked the team’s weaknesses. The only reason Mitchem went outside was because there was no viable OH2 option last year, and we all know that Granato is inconsistent and has trouble with a big block. Combined with no power OH recruits to replace what UH lost, it is not surprising that the team looks discombobulated. Difficult to have confidence when you know there is no terminator to bail you out. And I don’t want to forget Greeley. Her absence at OH over the past year has hurt too. With a healthy Greeley in the lineup, UH beats Marquette, and looks better against San Diego.

Folks really shouldn’t be surprised by all of this. We saw a preview last year during the first three matches when Taylor and Mitchem were injured. The new normal for us fans will be a team that looks bad against the top 25 and struggles against the next 25. If UCLA plays to its talent level, it won’t be a long night tomorrow.

  48. islandman August 26, 2017 10:56 pm

There are NCAA limits on the amount of hours per day and per week that student-athletes can engage in athletically related activities The match was short so i guess they have time left for practice.

  49. Hot August 26, 2017 10:58 pm

Granato needs to be smarter, Kahakai just needs to be better. Or sit and try out Anderson. Ross, just no.

  50. Maverick August 26, 2017 11:14 pm

    48. Expect the same tomorrow night, barring something miraculous.

  51. Hot August 26, 2017 11:21 pm

    48. NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! Time to sit Ross down. She can’t do anything in the front row and she isn’t an improvement over Castillo in the back row. And pull Granato when she isn’t performing! I don’t understand why Sibley got pulled after three swings (one kill, one error), while the smaller Ross has a longer leash when she has been consistently hitting negative. And Ah Mow-Santos needs to hold another audition for the libero position because the experienced senior just isn’t cutting it. So much for her “That is our libero” quote.

  52. Bleachercoach August 26, 2017 11:35 pm

I just deleted my frustrations that was written and just decided to keep it simple instead of pointing individuals they really have been a major disappointment IMO.

Keeping it simple: The team is disappointing because I see the same girls making same mistakes for year(s) and still playing. Our team really must have no talent if the same girls making mistakes continue to play. Sorry but its frustrating because they are not rookies. I know Coach Robyn is trying to find that vocal leader but also a player(s) leading by action: (playing consistently good more often than not) Again this team just doesnt have that player yet. Williams (Frosh MB) has been the most impressive player by what Robyn is trying to get from all her players. Just watching her play is fun! Eventhough she makes freshman mistakes she just plays her heart off. She deserves to be on the court. Maglio and Iosia deserves to be on the court. After that 2 its really up in the air. Like to see the other freshmen play. You can never tell how they play until they play in this real setting (Stan Sheriff Arena) Some girls are just Game players and might that might be that piece missing in the puzzle. Robyn has a mind-set like old timers in coaching like myself. There is a point of “old school coaching” that works but I had to realize that this might be a “Shock” to them and it can make them play too tight or “not wanting to fail”. I want a hard nosed athlete but i surely dont want them to play on ” egg shells” either. We as coaches have to bring what we have to the team but also be open minded how every athlete responds to your style. Today coaching is not only about X’s and O’s but knowing how their outside environment and personal life is going. Some players already have it tough outside athletics so we may have to be that ” father/mother” figure for them. Is it our problem as coaches? No! But sometimes our interpersonal relationship with our players can explain the why’s behind the what on each player.
Anyways like Ah Mow said , ” we need to recruit hitters.” Maybe when Robyn, Angelica, and other coaches start to recruit for their future starting this year they might have to wait until they get then we can say, ” you recruited them!” I have to remember she is taking over a squad that she didnt recruit as a head coach.
Regardless what happens with this team, I will surely will love and support them through the end. They are like my daughters. Life lessons in learning how to lose and fail is better than winning. In life after volleyball, they will encounter alot more trials than success so this migjt be good for them and us. Now, I truly will not taking any “win” this season for granted. It surely doesnt feel good driving home after we lose…

  53. Chicken Grease August 27, 2017 12:42 am

    Cindy Luis August 26, 2017 10:03 pm

well that was pretty ugly. just got told no interviews because Ah Mow-Santos has the team over in Gym 1 practicing. Ouch.

This is wrong. Win or lose, media should be given access. What’s practicing right after the game going to do anyways.

Hope the Stan Sheriff stands can be filled for Wahine volleyball this season 😔 . . . 🏐

  54. Hot August 27, 2017 1:06 am

Also not sure why the players have to practice right after the game when it is the coach’s decision to keep Kahakai, Granato and Ross in there, while pulling Sibley after three attempts. Williams, Maglio, Koelsch and Anderson did as well as they could. And while Iosia had some questionable decisions (setting Granato against a 6-5 blocker on match point vs. Marquette while Maglio was lined up against the setter), it’s hard to fault her when she is running down passes from Kahakai, Granato and Ross.

  55. Warriorfan August 27, 2017 1:23 am

    Obviously disapppointing,
I think Kahakai is just one of those players that does better in practice than actual matches. often times I find myself wishing the wahine had the opponents libero instead. She has some good matches just overall her passing is not consistent enough. I sure miss Ali Longo and Sarah Mendoza.

Ross hitting negative so far this season,I just think she’s not suited as a starter. She is better as a backup and sparkplug off the bench like she was against Arizona last season.

I still think Maglio belongs at opposite or left side to maximize her attempts and that she should play all the way around. I also say that Howling deserves a shot at the second middle spot at least to see what she can do.

  56. Hot August 27, 2017 2:00 am

    55. Kahakai is definitely athletic and can dive and roll and all that. To me, the issues are her terrible passing (getting aced five times as a senior, overpassing that led to the match-eding kill by USD) and her inability to get to balls that are not directly hit in her direction. She has the “feet cemented to the floor” syndrome in almost every match. Yes, I do miss Ali Longo and Sarah Mendoza, not to mention the other previous liberos who were either defensive whizzes or consistent passers (or both).

  57. menehune August 27, 2017 3:49 am

I agree with most of the bloggers that Kahakai and Ross should be replaced. “When the engine broke, fix’um, no use duct tape.”
Claire Marie has proven to be a capable back row player in the past and should be given the opportunity to start as Libero.
We also have the height on this team but Sibley and Kendra are being under utilized in the front row…why?
The only constants on this team are Maglio, Williams and Iosea.
Also, punishing the team to practice after the game is not a smart move.
Maybe Robin should take a look in the mirror and accept the blame for the teams performance. Mass punishment only breeds discontent and low morale.
But, once a Wahine fan, ALWAYS a Wahine fan. GO BOWS.

  58. tako August 27, 2017 7:07 am

Should be a great game today… Interestingly, meeting in Gym 1 after the game is being interpreted as “mass punishment.” I wonder??? Coach is big on communication and having a love for the game. Just maybe, that’s the message that is being passed on, immediate feedback for improvement and what was done “right.” Let’s give the team some space and hold on to our tongues with our teeth without biting it off.

  59. Connor August 27, 2017 7:15 am

As long as granato and Ross start wahine will continue to struggle. Ah mow needs to develop players for future. These two cannot be future. If so I am giving up my season tickets.

  60. warriorwahine August 27, 2017 7:53 am

didnt even want to comment last night

from bad to worse to impossible

more than ugly and no cohesion on the court. not even a combined magnum and kendra to take control

passing was bad, blocking was bad, hitting was bad. hideously swept by a ‘weak’ team by playing weaker.

robyn hope you get your girls together or they will be slaughtered this evening

  61. T103 August 27, 2017 8:26 am

#59 Surprised that you would give up your season tickets after 2 pre-season games of a brand new team and brand new coach. I’ll take ur season tickets…. #fairweatherfan Surprising you guys are raking the team over coals. Talk about no grace yea? I was listening to the post-game commentary from Ryan, Lisa, and Jordan (I think thats his name, jordan scott) and they pointed out how much expectancy Hawaii has on this team, I mean having so many years of winning, and even for Robyn, who probably has really high expectations for the team and herself, it’s a rebuilding season and we need to be patient with Robyn as well as the team. If this were to happen with the football team, no one would be saying that they are gonna give up their season tickets after the 2nd game. And Chicken Grease, it’s not a right that we get interviews with the coach or player, their first priority is the team and the game. Robyn means business, and we all know the just by her 1st couple of interviews, heck after the 1st post game interview from Marquette, I was scared of her, and that was through the tv. And I don’t think being in gym 1 after the match last night should be considered punishment, we don’t know if Robyn was yelling at them, or making them run suicides 3 hours straight or anything. Reality check, shoji wouldn’t do it, but new coach, new era. I’m optimistic & hopeful, I think we all should be, they need our support not fair weather fans.

  62. Bleachercoach August 27, 2017 8:47 am

I remember coach Shoji said that Savannah is or will be in the. Olympics. I dont think she can mske it. She might have soft hands but her movenent to bad passes are very slow. She is not mobile enough and needs to be more deceptive.and creative setting her hitters up. Too predictable sometimes!
Granato has a powerful arm but is a 50/50 hitter and cannot pass from the backrow. Savannah and Granato is our major backrow problems. We need to try others. Hands down, ” Emma Smith” is the prized ds and libero that got away. Thatcwas a huge loss. Cant wait to see what Shaney can do! Greenly if she does return should be delegated to play ds only. Maybe we can try one or both freshman black athletes at the outsides….Bottom line is we will not succeed with this lineup if we dont change. We need more height and consistency from the Outside Hitters. Also cant wait to Baby G rreturns. 5’10” Jannelle Kong deserves a shot at the backrow too. We have a long season ahead and nothing set in stone for our hands down starters. Whoever is on the BENCH should be licking their chops and be READY when called and show the cosches I am that player that should be on the court.
Where is the PASSION and MOTIVATION girls!

  63. Ron August 27, 2017 9:00 am

I also was too upset to comment last night. I was so frustrated watching the “same old, same old” without any real attempts to right the ship. Knowing that I was not alone with my frustration somehow makes it better. I think that you bloggers have helped me realize that this is our team and there will be growing pains. Robyn’s provincial approach will no longer work . I have said from the get-go that scrimmaging ,not drills are are essential to developing team cohesion. Skyler is such a joy I will continue to be a fan for at least 4 more years, God and my Doctors willing.

  64. greenthumb August 27, 2017 9:19 am

I think last night — hard as it was for fans to watch and the players and coaches to experience — was educational. As hard as you practice and try to replicate in-game pressure, playing an actual opponent is the best way to see your strengths and weaknesses.

    My take-aways after last night:

    * Play Maglio all 6 positions and let her do her own serving. She did fine last year and had some serving runs, and I can only think the season of beach between then and now would have polished her skills.

    * Try Koelsch left side. What she loses in height she makes up for in focus/anticipation and heart.

    * Williams is winnahs. In addition to her power and focus, she is actively working to bolster spirit and isn’t afraid to rally her upperclassmen teammates.

    * Ross needs a role, but a more targeted one than she has right now. She reminds me of the energy burst that Koelsch would bring to the court in past seasons.

    * Fervent wishes that Greeley heals up soon. She definitely is missed. (Health first; if she isn’t 100% then a medical redshirt would be sad but should be considered for her future; don’t want her having issues decades from now that could have been avoided.)

    * Without naming names, NO ONE who consistently serves on the borderline of crossing the end line should be serving.

  65. Maverick August 27, 2017 10:44 am

Don’t be surprised if Williams has a poor to middling night against UCLA. The Bruins are a significant step up from Marquette and San Diego. Starting line can go 6-1, 6-3, 6-3 with prep volleyball aces #28, 10 and 26. And team defense is very strong.

  66. islandman August 27, 2017 11:02 am

    61. That’s Scott Robbs.
    64. Is that server kind of jumping over the line and in the air when she hits the serve ? That is not a foot fault, similar to tennis serves ?

67, thanks for the in-the-air description. What is worrying me is on her approach, the last foot she plants before smacking the ball is close to the line, and in at least one case looked to be on it with part of that foot into the court.

Robin will have to cultivate the heart of this year’s team. That will have to carry them thru the season. No one mentions the fact that the previous staff had at least three years to sign outsides and left Robin with a 5’10” OH as her best option. Frankly if Nikki Taylor was not a local girl we might have had similar teams for the past 3 years. Robin needs to spend any available scholarships on pin hitters and another setter to back up Iosia as she will already be a junior next year. Hopefully Robin has made contacts thru her time with the National team and her staff will be able to find gems overseas.

Not sure why coach is not letting Maglio serve. At 6-3″ serving in and to locations is so much easier. She was very effective last year hitting the preferred target. Actually I want her to play all the way around.

These first three matches are tough teams to play out of the chute. Should have had some Pine Bluffs like men’s basketball has.

Actually the wahines should schedule easier teams coming out of the shoot. I guess with RPI and conference. There is not enough time to fit them in.

new blog format driving me nuts.
    http://www.hawaiiwarriorworld.com/?p=44582
    new thread on USD-Marquette.
I was OK with not getting quotes. would have been nice but at least I was told far enough in advance that I could write around it.

    couple of things.
I think you’ll see Maglio serve at some point.
as well as play all the way around
as for scheduling, the Big West’s RPI is so poor that you schedule higher RPI teams in the beginning that are supposed to help the rest of the season.

Burns has been cleared. may or may not see action.
