Sea to shining sea

While Nick Rolovich remains in Hawaii conducting interviews with the next year’s returning players, the rest of the coaches are on the recruiting trail.

Offensive line coach Chris Naeole is is Australia and defensive line coach Legi Suiaunoa is in American Samoa. The three coordinators and other four assistant coaches are on the mainland.

The Warriors are tentatively scheduled to resume practicing on Monday. That would allow the Warriors to comfortably fit 15 practices ahead of the Dec. 24 Hawaii Bowl, their presumptive destination. Next week is the last week of classes for the fall semester. Final-exam week begins on Dec. 12 leading to the Dec. 17 graduation ceremony.

Yesterday, at work, I collected my money for a five-win over/under bet. This bet was made in mid-season, coming off Hawaii’s loss at Michigan. This was before Dru Brown came aboard. I made this bet with Ikaika Woosley as our starter. I think he handled his demotion with class. I wish him well. I think he played decently against Cal.

My new bet, which I will propose to the same person tomorrow, is seventeen wins, over/under, for the men’s basketball team. My same work friend thinks they’re awful, but I believe they will play at another level ONCE THE POST-SEASON BAN IS RESCINDED.

    It has to, right?

I hope all of Coach Rolovich’s assistants are retained.

I’d like to thank them for a non-horrific season.

  7. cappie the dog November 30, 2016 8:25 am

It’s a shame that Rigoberto Sanchez doesn’t have enough kicks to lead the FBS in field goal percentage. He needs two attempts against Hawaii’s next opponent, and obviously, have to make them. I hope this next opponent is either Texas-San Antonio or Southern Mississippi.

While UH is on the recruiting trail, they should take a look at Pono Lolohea. The team needs some big boys on the DL.

  10. Da Punchbowl Kid November 30, 2016 9:02 am

Mahalo to the coaches for hitting the recruiting trail so quickly. Striking while the iron is hot is key, the Warriors are on the rise and in a bowl game allowing the recruiters a strong advantage.

I like that coaches Nae’ole and Suinaga are heading to foreign soil to go after athletes there. The two of them are great ambassadors for the UH Football program. Good luck to them and all the other recruiters.

For the recruits who may be reading here today I say this: This program is led by an excellent coaching staff who will bring out the best in you. And you wil be surrounded by Warriors ready to fight together and to fight for you. This is what we have seen with this year’s group, and it’s what I see going forward.

Congrats again to Coach Rolo’s staff and the Warriors!!!
    GO WARRIORS!!!

  11. H-Man November 30, 2016 9:19 am

There’s enough “beefy” interior D-Linemen returning, along with greyshirt Kalepo Naotala, but what is needed more on the DL are a couple more DEs that can pursue laterally and pass-rush. But the biggest need on the D are tall and fast cornerss from the JC schools. There are a lot of young corners coming up, but they’re just not ready yet. Just my opinion.

  12. Derek November 30, 2016 10:14 am

June Jones plucked CBS Myron Newberry, Gerard Lewis, and Ryan Mouton from the JC ranks in Texas so why not look for corners in Texas again. Make sense to me.

  13. What??? November 30, 2016 10:37 am

It only makes sense if the coaches have recruiting connections in Texas.

  14. A-House November 30, 2016 10:42 am

if the Aussie OL keeps his commitment to Hawaii, enrolls in January 2017 — when does he sign his LOI? in 2/2017 like all 2017 recruits?

  15. A-House November 30, 2016 10:50 am

if Lolohea is a qualifyer – would he consider an offer from UH to come home an play?

  16. J-Dog November 30, 2016 11:52 am

Agree that Texas was good for us in the past, but without a connection, or local tie, Rolo has mentioned he won’t go chasing recruits that just want a free trip to Hawaii.

Too bad we don’t have a Florida connection anymore since Chris “the rager” Demarest left. Could use guys like an under the radar RB speedster in St. Juste and up and coming CB in Roe Farris. Marrell Jackson and Nequan were decent. Too bad the 2 HS teammates Higdon and Fairchild didn’t pan out.

  17. jeezy33 November 30, 2016 12:24 pm

I drew up a depth chart pointing out every need Hawaii needs to fulfill in order to have a chance to win the West division next year:

RB- 1. Need to replace Paul Harris. Diocemy and Holly will provide a solid 1-2 punch. But we still need that all purpose guy in the Paul Harris role. Ronnie Rivers and Miles Reed are the top 2 available. Need 1 to buy in. Both are legit.

WR- 1. Maybe Marcus Brown Armstrong is the guy, but I do believe Hawaii needs to upgrade with the loss of Marcus Kemp. Not sure what the health of Stubblefield is. Keelan Ewaliko is going to be good next year if his improvement continues and he has a great off season. Timoteo might be ready for the next step but he still has a ways to go IMO. We are fine at slot.

TE- 1. Tui Unga is solid but need 1 more who can do it all.

Right Tackle- RJ Hollis must be replaced. JC route is the best way IMO. Or King James improvement.

DE- 2. Meffy should have a good year and Manoa needs to keep improving. But 2 solid edge rushers would be awesome. Jordan Flack and Anthony Luke would be huge gets. Lempa wouldn’t have to blitz as often.

DT- 1. Need to stop the run to win this division. Plain and simple. Gifford should be good, Faalalogo gives us depth, and Moala future looks good. But we need a dominate DT that can gives us some interior pressure up the middle. KT loss obviously hurt.

CB- 2 Plain and simple, the cupboard is empty right now. Farris returns and after that, just a bunch of FR. I expect 1-2 JC guys and a high level HS recruit.

S- 1 Trayvon and Lewis are legit. But after that, the drop off is big. I think Michael Sewell from LA Valley would fill a huge need. Injuries happen and being able to rotate our safeties would be a big asset. Santiago needs to keep improving. Still think he can be picked on in coverage though.

K- Replacing Rigo will be a tough one.

  18. jeezy33 November 30, 2016 12:26 pm

The rest of the recruits can be filled for future depth and best available players. Still want to sign LBs even though we are stocked because you want every class to have depth. Would also sign a good HS QB if available. Wouldn’t force it though.

  19. DaveLetterMan November 30, 2016 12:35 pm

    Hi Tsaikos!
Jeezy-nice analysis. Something good to read besides monku, monku, monku. Be interesting to see how your outlook coincides with the coaching staff’s.

  20. DaveLetterMan November 30, 2016 12:39 pm

    Jeezy-what’s your opinion on Kalepo?

  21. Jeezy33 November 30, 2016 1:10 pm

    20. Not an FCS level player.
I’m 90% sure my outlook is accurate with the exception that my opinion regarding Safety and Wr might differ. I think the coaches trust our young WRs developing and I think we need a JC upgrade for the wide out spot. I want a Chris Gant type or someone that can run all the routes. I also think a jc safety isn’t a priority to the coaches because we have keala Santiago but This season proved to me that without Daniel Lewis in the lineup, there are huge coverage issues when Packer or Santiago was in. I don’t want to take that risk of Lewis or Trayvon gets hurt next year.

  22. clyde November 30, 2016 1:32 pm

Initially, there were 21 seniors in this class, but I believe that number curiously dropped to 20 on Saturday for the senior ceremonies. Could WR Isaiah Bernard be returning? I think he had a redshirt year available, and don’t believe he saw the field at all this year.

  23. islandman November 30, 2016 2:08 pm

Isaiah Bernard, who is redshirting,, is scratched from @HawaiiFootball senior night, paving way for his return #hawaiifb #staradvertiser

One of the first stops for coaches was at Pima CC.

  25. clyde November 30, 2016 2:41 pm

Thanks, islandman. Should have known Stephen was on top of that.

  26. DaveLetterMan November 30, 2016 2:48 pm

Thanks Jeezy. Looking forward to the bowl game and LOI day. This class will really show how good or bad the coaching staff is at recruiting. So far the recruits they’re going after look good but can’t tell till the signature is on the dotted line.

  27. A-House November 30, 2016 2:49 pm

I was told that if “monkuing” stops — something is wrong.

look all around – TV, newspaper, publications — someone always has a bone to pick

to each his own — read what you want and trash the rest

  28. kahuna November 30, 2016 3:11 pm

No forget another “red shirt”. RB Melvin Davis is still listed on the roster and also was not part of the senior walk so he COULD return also. He could fill the role of Stephen Lakalaka(power back) so UH is still in pretty good shape there. Will have DSJ, Freddie Holly, Melvin Davis and Kaiwi Chung. Don’t know where Genta Ito and Ryan Iasoa#48(sp). fit in.

Yes…we do need to recruit RBs for the future but at least for next year, we have do have enough.

Wonder if someone like Nic Tom can play RB. The dude is very strong for someone his size and has good running skills. Maybe Rolo can give him a look at RB since slot is manned by underclassmen John Ursua and Dylan Collie. Kumoku Noa and maybe even Isiah Bernard could move to slot next season.

  29. kahuna November 30, 2016 3:17 pm

Tell me why this young man cannot be a productive rb.
In fact, I see him as a version of Diocemy Saint Juste.
Dude runs the 40 in 4.45 and have a bench of 21 reps of 225. Fast, strong and athletic. Perfect fit at rb IMHO.

    Aloha, Gang!
Good to have time to read the Warrior Beat again. But… still not going back to facebook any time soon.
Missed everyone the past year+ due to new work schedule and busy-ness with all our keiki. Frustrating and exciting to watch this team this year. So proud of everyone for fighting through and not giving up.
Hope we pick up some great recruits, and hope we don’t spill the beans until/unless we know they are locked in… I hate when some of our guys get stolen at the last minute.

  31. clyde November 30, 2016 4:33 pm

al@24: If Agasiva was their target, not good news b/c Hawaii didn’t make his top 3. Too bad, but good luck to the kid.

  32. Ipu Man November 30, 2016 4:47 pm

Would be nice if UH went after speedy “track stars”—
who go farther than 40 yards…

  33. Ipu Man November 30, 2016 4:49 pm

Also would be nice to think out of the box and go after
7 foot basket ball players who are to heavy for BB but
perfect for FB…tell them they have a better chance to
play pro ball if they switch and come to Hawaii 🙂

  35. ai-eee-soos November 30, 2016 4:55 pm

found this blurb – just speculation, …… but what if this option happens? Good times will roll again, somewhere.

    3. Will Nevada look for head coaching experience?
The Wolf Pack could look to lower levels for head coaching experience. Names like Eastern Washington’s Beau Baldwin, Youngstown State’s Bo Pelini or Illinois State’s Brock Spack could bring that.
Former Hawaii coach June Jones could also be an option.

  36. ai-eee-soos November 30, 2016 5:18 pm

    More speculation …

Nevada: UCLA quarterbacks coach Marques Tuiasosopo is a candidate at Nevada. Tui has spent the past eight years coaching at Washington, UCLA and USC.

  37. ai-eee-soos November 30, 2016 5:21 pm

Hey …. Is Rich Miano still interested in being a college football Head Coach?

This Nevada job is the “same level” as UH, and pays $500+K.

    Go for it, Rich.

  38. kahuna November 30, 2016 6:30 pm

Rich Miano have been away from college football for 5 yesrs now. He have also never been a head coach at the college level before. Rich’s college coaching days are behind him. He have zero chance at getting the job.

  39. 808 November 30, 2016 7:12 pm

    35,

I think it would be a great idea for Hawaii football. If the coaching thing doesn’t work out for Miano at Nevada, that would mean Hawaii could pull off 3 or 4 consecutive wins against Nevada while he is the HC.

However, Miano sounds like a person who is committed to Hawaii football and he seems like someone who is content on living here and not moving away. I wonder though if he will be given another opportunity again to coach at UH as an assistant coach.

  40. boolakanaka December 1, 2016 6:19 am

21, Agree with Jeezy, that the folks we have grooming at our safety positions are much better suited to playing in the box, however, they were not apt while in space….that needs to be corrected.

  41. J Milo December 1, 2016 6:39 am

I thought Warriors were eligible to a bowl. see link: http://www.mwcconnection.com/2016/12/1/13802748/mountain-west-bowl-projections

  42. 3-Prong December 1, 2016 6:53 am

Spoke to Miano’s wife a little while back and she said that the Hawaii Head Coaching job was his “Dream Job”.

  43. Ipu Man December 1, 2016 7:10 am

Western Michigan’s Zach Terrell has only been intercepted once
this season and is undefeated. Must have great linemen. Pity they
are not number one like in the good old days. Ohio State is a sham.
