Free choice

Strength/conditioning coordinator Gary Beemer was looking for people to help with the Warriors’ offseason conditioning program.

There was one catch: The worker had to pay for his own travel, housing and meals.

Oh, another catch: The salary was zero.

Any takers?

As it turned out, three volunteers from the mainland, including one from Florida, are helping the program this summer. They show up early, stay late, work hard and never lack enthusiasm.

Who says there’s nothing for free?

  5. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2014 7:16 am

Not to sound like people from my parents’ generation — “we walked 2 miles to school every day, uphills both ways …” — but I think it’s hard to find people willing to work long hours for no pay. It’s commendable when people are willing to pay their dues, with “pay” being a literal word.

  6. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2014 7:17 am

By the way, I was willing to concede the “uphills both ways” part. But they went to school every day? Even on weekends? Hmmm …

  7. rage777 July 14, 2014 7:17 am

So basically a really bad intern job, since you have to pay airfare to get to your job (and return home). Good if you are a recent college graduate that needs to put something on a resume.

  8. hatakeman July 14, 2014 7:18 am

    Good morning all !!!

You forgot the “in the snow” part also, even in Hawaii.

While I’m on my usual morning tangent, here’s another saying that should be retired:
“This hurts me more than it hurts you.”
My piano teacher told me that when my finger was broken by a slammed door when I was 6. Even then, a 6-year-old Stephen knew: Oh, yeah? Let me slam your finger and say it hurts me.
    But I digress.
And I’ll stop recollecting in the third person.

Nice to hear people helping the program and not expecting pay for it. Fact of the matter is there are people who define much of their lives by rendering service to others and consider themselves richer for it: Then there are those who demand payment for everything….I wonder in the final analysis who stacks up better in the sight of the Creator of the Universe?

  20. Da Punchbowl Kid July 14, 2014 8:27 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 😉

Good for Coach Beemer and his volunteers. Mahalo to all!

Here’s another question for you to ignore, Stephen: Any other late transfer guys coming in? Is it too late for players to join and play this season?

  21. HALEAKALA July 14, 2014 8:52 am

I received an email from Indiegogo that the campaign for helping UH with their travel expenses has ended. They raised $4,515.00. The goal was $10,000.

  22. HALEAKALA July 14, 2014 8:56 am

In regards to the campaign by Indiegogo to help with the travel expenses, they listed some little incentives to supporters, such as:

    $100USD
Thank you letter from Ben Jay
Receive the above and a thank you letter signed by Ben Jay, Athletic Director, for your generous support!

I donated that amount and never did receive a letter. Hmmm! Another one of those things?

  23. Last Call July 14, 2014 9:01 am

What is this “Hugh Announcement” coming today that ESPN 1420 it tweeting about? Something to do with the next Downtown Athletic Club meeting.

one side is shinny and the other “dull”

which side do you place on the seat?

  29. A-House July 14, 2014 9:18 am

why does UH and related you name it feel that a thank you letter from Ben Jay is a whoopiee???????

Ben Jay – if you really want to balance the UHAD budget, make it your priority to discuss having all the “non-revenue” sports be funded via a direct line item by the Legislature in the annual budget; simultaneously, discuss the probability of securing more income from whatever sources are available – concession fees, parking fees, increasing student “athletic” contribution ( $100 each semester from every student at UH-Manoa ); collect athletic fees from all Kapiolani CC/Honolulu CC students/Leeward CC students and give them the same benefits allocated to UH-Manoa students (free entry to all UH sports).
after all, they are a part of the UH system

donations, unless continuous and large, will never help you break even or be profitable – it just won’t happen!

let’s see, if 2,000 businesses donate $50,000 each and every year that gives you $10,000,000 ( provided my calculator is correct ) – with the “tight” economy, this will be nearly impossible

  30. boolakanaka July 14, 2014 9:25 am

5 & 19, ST and SM. As to interns, I literally get 15-20, requests for someone wanting to be an intern for me, every month–there almost everywhere. That said, I guess, there are very curious on how to become a fulltime slacker, like myself. SM, the Q depends if the creator belongs to the local 5??!

ST–The thing about working at the mansion, is that there is always plenty of work for me passing out hot towels and mints in the bathroom, although I dislike cleaning out the hot-tubs and whirlpools after a big party….you gotta use plenty of Pine-O!!!!?

  36. boolakanaka July 14, 2014 10:04 am

ST–I guess we won’t hear about our JC boys til the last minute–after grades have been turned-in?? And you are right, for the most part about the Kafentzis brothers….although, Kyle and Kurt can be rather chatty. One thing for sure, after living with a combination of them for a bunch of years….damn, they love fighting with each other–like a 24/7 pastime.

  37. Da Punchbowl Kid July 14, 2014 10:14 am

Thanks for the reply, Stephen. LBs and RBs are stacked so far. Is the transfer a game changer kind of player? Or will all be revealed in another WB post?

Interns: Resume, Experience, Exposure, Contacts (Coaches/Adm etc). Interns/ GAs usually have support to sustain minimum pay or scholarship equivalent until full time opportunity occurs (Wynn, Matthews).

When the economy tanked in 2008, paid internships dried up, but requests for internships didn’t. My office used to offer paid summer internships. We don’t anymore. We still get just as much requests for volunteer internships, and have to turn people away. It is the sign of the times. People will “invest” volunteer internships, and will use the work experience (and job references) to enhance their resume.

  47. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2014 11:11 am

I know the articles and joke section are outstanding, but does anybody actually subscribe/read Playboy anymore?
How does it come up with the money to pay outrageously high appearance fees?

  48. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2014 11:14 am

The economy tanked twice in a seven-year period (2001 and 2008).
    We’re resilient people.

  49. Da Punchbowl Kid July 14, 2014 11:15 am

A-house – not to mention the shiny side more likely to stick to da okole… awkward.

Jes ask our resident expert and Playboy Mansion restroom host, boolakanaka, he should know.

  50. SteveM July 14, 2014 11:23 am

    Good morning everyone!

A-House — odd there are no instructions, like on toothpick wrappers. 🙂

  51. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2014 11:38 am

Bathroom techniques have long been subject to debate.
For instance, in betting on toilet-paper rolls, do you take the over or under?

  52. NotNasti July 14, 2014 11:42 am

Shiny side, dull side, it depends on how badly you gotta go. Sometimes you have no time to check which side is which. Sometimes you don’t have time to pull the seat cover. Cold sweat, contractions . . .

  53. oldtimer808 July 14, 2014 11:45 am

Aloha I see this is a slow week starting off. I guess we’re all waiting for fall camp and the football season to start. When we are relegated to bathroom debate than something is amiss.

  54. oldtimer808 July 14, 2014 11:47 am

ST women like the under and men prefer the over. It has nothing to do with a sexual preference.

  55. A-House July 14, 2014 12:17 pm

oldtimer: it may make a difference when you use public restroom at Aloha Stadium! or the sani-toi while tailgating.

  56. st. anthony trojan July 14, 2014 12:45 pm

HALEAKALA… “They raised $4,515.00.” But the small print me think..was like 5% or less for them as their “cut”…. cus is not an intern “work” 4 them…he he he

As 4 ur letta…hope come soon…you know budget restraints…no more stamps maybe.. just for fun…you should write him e mail…and ask…since the campaign is over…be curious what the reply will be…here his e mail…Ben Jay….athdir@hawaii.edu… or phone …(808) 956-7301.

  57. st. anthony trojan July 14, 2014 1:00 pm

Just curious…maybe a reply from someone in the “field”

UHAD is strapped 4 money…as so well noted…

Yet the UHAD has 5 “Media Relations” people.

    Marketing only TWO.

Credit where credit is DUE…and long over due.

To Ms. Jenny Matsuda, and the Academic dept…for keeping all of the warriors on track for acquiring their degrees…all in that dept should be commended…Mahalo 4 all you do…especially when it is so hard to find positive to say about the sports dept. sum times…

    Kaneohe Spirent-

Mahalo for opening up your home for me to visit your ‘Ohana last night. Good memories revisited and made.

One day when you’re ready, come and join us Tsaikos…

  60. nutmegger July 14, 2014 2:06 pm

The toilet seat question reminded me of a story that an old Norwegian friend of my dad told me. During the war there was a shortage of toilet paper, so his father told him to use both sides.

  61. SteveM July 14, 2014 2:19 pm

Since we seem to be on the topic…. here’s a bit of cinematic history I’ve wondered about…

In the movie “Demolition Man”, Stallone remarks that there is no toilet paper…only 3 shells…and receives snickers from everyone for his ignorance. So, what are the 3 shells and how do you use them?

    Sci-fi indeed! 😐

  62. leron July 14, 2014 2:24 pm

#57 I think Tsai can corroborate….the 5 in the sports media relations dept. are overworked during the school year. Each one is in charge of multiple sports, and if I recall, the edict to not work over 40 hours a week limited media access to the football team last year. From what I’ve heard, they do way more than most folks realize.

  63. HALEAKALA July 14, 2014 3:54 pm

    SAT:
I don’t really care if I get the letter or not from BJ. If I do, I will toss it away. However if UH and their contractors solicit donations by promising something, they have to follow through on the promise. BWTH. I’m not going to donate to UH through a contractor again. Only through Na Koa.

  64. Andrew July 14, 2014 4:27 pm

It baffles me that ESPN 1420 is airing the homerun derby. That is unless they are required to air it. Does anyone honestly listen to that on the radio?

  65. Bryson July 14, 2014 7:29 pm

Wow a RB raised in Washington and going to school in the midwest…Deja Vu

  66. st. anthony trojan July 14, 2014 8:02 pm

    # 62 leron…if they are limited to football access…how in hell can they do there work..n why are they limited..do you know ?

And if they are each have 2 sports to cover.. n that sport is not in “season” …what do they do for those 40 hours?…surely me is one you speak about that “not realize” the amount of work they do…

They have a 6 coaches for the swimming team… guess must be for men n wahine…
so when they are not swimming…do they have more coaches then students that time..or are just training ? seems to me they should send them all to Puunene.. n have them train there…he he he

whitey can coach…n feed them salmon …

ne way thanks for the reply..me is more informed.. but still should have more marketing people…
but then again…maybe they have nothing to do 4 their 40 hours a week…sure does not show much progress in funds “rolling” into their coffers…

  67. al July 14, 2014 8:13 pm

the letter…do we donate because we want recognition or because we want to help?

  68. st. anthony trojan July 14, 2014 8:21 pm

The letter is about character al…if you put it out there.. then should deliver…
me is pretty sure… maybe zero donors did donate for a letter from Mr. BJ…
to have the letter framed n hanging in their home..place of business…etc…just to show n brag they donated..

  69. kawika49 July 14, 2014 8:28 pm

  75. tommui July 14, 2014 10:15 pm

If I recall correctly, $100 will get you a pat on the head by fellow Tsaikos. I believe the personalized thank you comes with a $1,000 donation.

  76. Shoko July 15, 2014 7:31 am

Congrats to Ben Clarke for being selected for the Lombardi Award watch list. Wonder if he hand’t moved to LT from C he would have garnered attention on the Rimington Award.

Actually, if a fan donated $100 to UH via Indiegogo, Ben Jay was supposed to send out a signed thank you letter for their support.

Maybe the letter is in the mail? Sure hope so, because I think acknowledgement is important and shouldn’t be overlooked when you asking for support. Sometimes its the little things that make a big difference.

  77. NorthShoreFan July 15, 2014 7:31 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…bootiful day.
