Whatever happened to . . .

• The Alema Tachibana case?

It’s been nearly a week since Tachibana was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving. When quarterback Cayman Shutter was arrested on a similar accusation on March 28, it took four days before he was suspended indefinitely for violating team rules. After pleading no contest two weeks ago, Shutter was suspended for the first four games of 2012. The difference is Shutter’s arrest occurred a week after spring training started. In Tachibana’s situation, this is the offseason, when the players are on their own. UH will wait until after Tachibana’s court appearance on July 16 before deciding on a disciplinary action. Tachibana remains on scholarship and is permitted to attend summer-session classes. UH’s training camp opens on Aug. 1.

• Chris Williams?

Williams, who was the Warriors’ video coordinator for four years, is now working for a company that installs solar paneling. (Slugger is his co-worker.) The self-described “Captain Planet” said his work is geared toward preserving the eco-system “one house at a time.” Williams also is an aspiring clothes designer.

• The speakers?

With two weeks remaining in spring training, one of the amps blew out, forcing the Warriors to go mono for their remaining practices. The amp has been repaired, and the bass will once again be boom-boom-BOOMING for training camp.

• Juan Lozano?

Remember him? Maybe not. He was the Warriors’ director of administration for about a month before deciding to depart. He sent a letter recently noting he is doing well at Florida International. Brad Jones has done well as Lozano’s successor.

• Lasi Eselu?

Defensive end Ipulasi “Lasi” Eselu is no longer on the team.

• Scott Enos?

Enos, a former UH kicker, completed his first season with the Cedar Rapids Titans of the Indoor Football League.

    wha happened to eselu?

  3. al June 22, 2012 12:18 am

lebron came of age tonight…got everyone in the game with his double digit assists, kept their heads in the game throughout, exuded the confidence a leader needs during the final hour, and saved his coach.

…it did help that it was miller time.

  4. al June 22, 2012 12:18 am

so who’s doing the video stuff?

  5. al June 22, 2012 12:19 am

oh yah, now i remember it is dory.

  6. gigi-hawaii June 22, 2012 12:19 am

So that’s where Slugger works. I was wondering what she’s been doing. Glad she found a job in this economy.

  7. d1shima June 22, 2012 12:30 am

Actually talked with Captain Planet the other day while visiting with Slugger. Nice guy.

  8. al June 22, 2012 12:30 am

i believe that slugger was enticed out of retirement.

really nice folks that operate that business.

  9. d1shima June 22, 2012 12:31 am

#2 son is also a co-worker with Slugger as of yesterday

  10. al June 22, 2012 12:32 am

  11. d1shima June 22, 2012 12:33 am

Big premium on accuracy for kickers in IFB. Good for Enos

  14. al June 22, 2012 12:36 am

is that like hello and goodbye?

  15. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2012 12:36 am

Slugger will have enough moolah to buy season tickets for every sport.

  16. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2012 12:37 am

SteveM can’t leave until somebody says “goodbye.” It’s a Simon-sez thing.

  17. gigi-hawaii June 22, 2012 12:37 am

    really? lucrative job.

  18. al June 22, 2012 12:37 am

st…too bad. always thought that he had much potential. aren’t we also recruiting his kid brother?

  19. al June 22, 2012 12:38 am

are we close to attaining a commit from one time commit, tigi hill?

  20. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2012 12:38 am

In light of last year’s woes, it’s easy to forget that Enos did not miss a PAT in 2010.

  21. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2012 12:39 am

Not sure what happened to Tigi Hill.

Ben Mamea is on a mission. Or going on one.

  22. al June 22, 2012 12:43 am

tigi hill went to mesa jc and is being pursued by kansas, oregon st, and others. hawaii has allegedly offered as well.

  23. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2012 12:43 am

I’m going on vacation next week. Anybody want to be a host for a day?

Avis is going to take one of the days.

  24. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2012 12:44 am

    Al:

I’ll check it out. But UH has offered a lot of people.

  25. al June 22, 2012 12:44 am

imagine if we lined up with mamea, fonua, and hill at the lber spots…

  26. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2012 12:45 am

I saw Fonua the other day.

Or, more accurately, he saw me. He introduced himself. I didn’t recognize him. He’s rather imposing.

  27. al June 22, 2012 12:46 am

you mean vacation away from the laptop, iphone, etc.?

or the typical st stay-cation? haha.

  28. al June 22, 2012 12:47 am

so we took a 10 day away-cation which included many days incommunicado. it was the first time away from most of the civilized world. withdrawals ensued and was soon beaten back by the serenity.

  29. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2012 12:47 am

The rest of the recruits will be arriving next week. Well, except for Kapua Sai, J.T., and Demar Dorsey. Those three are still taking classes.

  30. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2012 12:49 am

    Al:

Glad you were able to take a break You work too hard.

They told me to burn off vacation. Apparently I have more than a month remaining. I wanted to share the wheel for a week, then take over again when the newcomers arrive.

  31. al June 22, 2012 12:50 am

i hear that fonua has gained 15 lbs of solid muscle since he has signed his contract.

i also hear that he is quite the gentleman as is most kahuku high school grads.

  32. d1shima June 22, 2012 12:50 am

  33. al June 22, 2012 12:53 am

it is best that those three get those courses in. all three will be impact players in the fall.

  34. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2012 12:54 am

    Al:

Fonua seems like a nice guy.

I was surprised that he was taller than I thought.

He seems really mature for a freshman.

  35. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2012 12:55 am

I’m interested in seeing Ronald Fields work out.

  36. al June 22, 2012 12:58 am

although, keeping it real, we have many question marks and holes to fill this fall…i still finding it exciting to see how this team progresses as the year goes by.

i believe that the new found team discipline will be good for one win that we shouldn’t have had.

the improved technical aspects of teaching will also be good for one win down the line.

as long as we show improvement whether we win or not each week is what i am looking forward to witnessing.

as long as we show that we have played to the best of our potential on every play.

as long as we show a program that is well organized and won’t be outsmarted.

looking forward to this new regime.

    …nuff said.

  37. al June 22, 2012 1:00 am

forgot about the birthday boy…ronnie fields. he’s a tall and rangy cb. kind of like jameel dowling minus 20 lbs.

  38. al June 22, 2012 1:00 am

    isn’t fonua 6’2″ or so?

  39. al June 22, 2012 1:02 am

a sleeper will be lancelot williams. must be since his emergence may have led to his much more heralded teammate from kalihi’s move from olb to fb.

    Stephen,

madeinhawaii and xer21 posted on SportsHawaii that Waylon Lolotai is leaving the team to go back to Colorado. He’s going to be a papa in Sept.. Since he graduated in the spring, he can transfer to another D1 school and have 2 to play 2. Have you heard anything about him?

  42. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2012 2:19 am

I heard he was iffy because he doesn’t really have a role this fall.

  43. mctruck June 22, 2012 3:55 am

Issues like, Tigi Hill, not qualifying to enter D1 program and going the other route to become qualified?, my concern is that if a promising high school athlete has the potential to contribute to any D1 program, why aren’t his coaches/academic councilers/parents, etc., making sure that these issues are addressed to make things happen for these young athletes?, or is it soley the athletes problem?….oh well????

  44. bleedgreen June 22, 2012 4:05 am

USC averaged 35 pts per game (ppg) last season; allowed 25 ppg. One blowout – beat UCLA 50 – 0; UCLA had 5 turnovers. Arizona, Arizona St., and Stanford scored 41 pts or more against USC. Most common ppg allowed by USC – 17 pts (5 games).

  45. Bulla June 22, 2012 4:12 am

    good morning tsaikos

mctruck, whew, good question, but it boils down to the student athlete, and that’s it. no vested interest from other stakeholders…sad to say. parents gotta get involved, stay involved, or just look in the mirror when the blame game starts.

have a great aloha friday 🙂

  46. Shoko June 22, 2012 4:28 am

    Morning!

I think one of the reasons is that some parents don’t emphasize education at an early age. Only until they realize that their kids could go to college on a D1 scholarship do they start to take action. By then, it might be too late as they struggle to make the grade to be eligible. It’s sort of a reactionary approach to education, rather than being proactive. And as a consequnce, they might have to take the long route (JC) to play D1 football.

  47. wafan June 22, 2012 4:29 am

    Happy Aloha Friday!

    Good morning, gang!

The problem with working is getting the time off to tailgate & go to games. I have FB season tix, but the season is during a busy time of year for solar installations. So, get your PV systems NOW before your A/C bills get too high. 🙂

Captain Planet keeps us smiling. d1’s #2 is not working right in the office, so I won’t see him as often, but it’s good to have him on board.

    K, off to hi ho…

  53. Last Call June 22, 2012 5:49 am

Someone at Fresno State recently made a boo boo when an article on the web site about a volleyball recruit said, As the ‘Dogs get ready for their only volleyball season in the Mountain West Conference, Fresno State will add ……

Only season in the MWC ? That caught the eye of fans who started the message board rumors that FSU would be leaving the MWC for the Big East and other teams to the Big West. Turns out it was a typo and the SID meant to say first season in the MWC. The article as corrected.

On a recent visit to the Boise State Scout.com fan board I was shocked to learn how much Ferd is hated by BSU fans.

  55. Ipu Man June 22, 2012 6:40 am

I still remember BSU taunting the Oregon player after the game because they kept him to only five yards. So then Blount knocked the buggah out.

But Blount also got slugged by a BSU fan on his way to the lockers…

  56. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2012 7:34 am

    Re: Waylon Lolotai

He has earned a degree, which makes him eligible to transfer without sitting out. He asked for a release so he can talk to schools in Colorado because he would like to play there. His wife, whom I believe might be an attorney, already has found a job on the Mainland. But he was not cut, and if he wanted to stay here and play, he could.

  57. Last Call June 22, 2012 7:42 am

It is my understanding that the DA will drop all charges in the Tachibana case as soon as he gets his free season tickets on the 50 yard line.

  58. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2012 7:45 am

Bad things happen at 4 in the morning. Like, for instance, that’s when this scammer out of Maryland calls me every morning to say I won $10 million and a Mercedes. All they want is for me to call back to let me know when they can drop off the Mercedes. I guess the transporter between Maryland and Hawaii is booked during certain hours.

Actually, I do wonder how season-ticket sales are going. It’s weird there’s no news out of there. I suppose the only way we’ll get an update is if RGM does a feature on being a ticket-sales teller.

  60. gigi-hawaii June 22, 2012 7:47 am

ST: don’t you have Caller ID? We always check ours when the phone rings. This is good because it weeds out the HEAVY BREATHERS and the telemarketers.

  61. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2012 7:50 am

    Yep, we’ve got caller ID.

We also have the caller ID that pops up on our TV.

Not sure why we have a land line other than it make it easier for the pizza place when we place orders.

  62. Capitolist/WassupDoc June 22, 2012 7:55 am

In today’s Star-Advertiser editorial section, there’s a detailed interview conducted by Vicki Viotti with the new Manoa Chancellor Tom Apple. The bolded quote below is the second paragraph of the introductory overview.

What does it mean? Over the past six months, I’ve tried to keep up on sports news stories, but I don’t recall reading/hearing anything about this. I assume the Jim Donovan is reaching the end of his initial contract sometime next spring – but are there issues which need to be addressed before his contract would be renewed?Obviously, money made from ticket sales would be a big factor, but is a winning record among the AD’s major responsibilities?

    Feedback please. Mahalo.

Answers to tougher questions — about the athletic director’s contract future, about which programs will rise and fall over the inevitable budget shortfalls — won’t be forthcoming until after he gets more face-to-face meetings behind him.

  63. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2012 7:57 am

  102. gigi-hawaii June 22, 2012 9:19 am

Sharie Shima was not retained when the 3 stations became Hawaii News Now. The last time I saw her on air, she didn’t look healthy. She had lost a lot of weight and was wrinkled.

  103. jimmy the lock June 22, 2012 9:19 am

    @gigi-hawaii

Who did you pick to win the Super Bowl. I don’t see you as a Giants fan since you are all about looks and would not hesitate to take Brady and his bunch. If my hunch is right then you are wrong.

  105. gigi-hawaii June 22, 2012 9:22 am

The strangest thing was that the Patriots had a better regular season than the Giants but still lost. Anyway, I wasn’t really rooting for the Patriots. I was sorely disappointed that the Packers weren’t the ones playing.

  113. HEINEKEN June 22, 2012 9:31 am

I happy we offered Tigi Hill again. Hopefully he picks us

  114. jimmy the lock June 22, 2012 9:32 am

    @d1shima

Small island, are you related to Sharie?

When the hole gets deeper can Apple worm his way out of it?

  115. jimmy the lock June 22, 2012 9:37 am

OKC had a better regular season than Miami. Just for the record.

  116. gigi-hawaii June 22, 2012 9:40 am

BTW, last year I favored the Mavs to beat the Heat, and I won.

  117. jimmy the lock June 22, 2012 9:45 am

Ok, I’m pau with the NBA.

  118. d1shima June 22, 2012 9:49 am

    jimmy,

    No relation.

Are you related to Itsa, Time, Land, or any combination thereof? Oh! And Bagel?

  119. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2012 9:55 am

Remember when all the TV weather people were women? Now it’s all guys. Sort of like the nursing profession.

  120. jimmy the lock June 22, 2012 9:58 am

No. Neither Ness, tite, heed Martin, security, picker, master, kwikset, sargent, stock and barrel, head, Sondra, John, Sandra Bul, or digital. There could be more that I am not aware of.

  121. gigi-hawaii June 22, 2012 9:59 am

ST: Hubby has EYES. He loves that cute anchor on Hawaii News Now, forgot her name. I keep telling him she’s so kiddish and that I prefer Paula Akana. But we both like Kekaula so I get my way and we watch channel 4 news. Lol.

  122. jimmy the lock June 22, 2012 10:00 am

One guy is actually Guy. There’s Moani on KITV. What a cutie!

    ST…Great minds think alike….LOL

  125. Last Call June 22, 2012 10:42 am

Some people take their old TV to a recycling center. I take mine out to the garage and sit it up on the work bench then when Joe Moore comes on I throw a brick at it.

  126. al June 22, 2012 10:44 am

didn’t someone say that the celtics were gonna take it and switched horses when it became apparent that miami would once again come from behind.

  127. tommui June 22, 2012 10:47 am

#119 ST: In my hospital stay, all the (primary) nurses except for Shaun, were female – and all very nice. Most of the nurses aides were usually female, many UH grads.

  128. gigi-hawaii June 22, 2012 11:01 am

Al: not me. In January, I told hubby I wanted Miami to win the championship, as I truly believed this was their year. Hubby thought it would be the Bulls, then later, the Thunder.

For next year, he really thinks it will be the Bulls’ turn. I’ll still root for the Heat, though.

  129. gigi-hawaii June 22, 2012 11:03 am

Tom: when I was hospitalized last year, I was shocked to meet so many nurses and aides who had my loved ones’ names.

    For example, there were:

David (hubby’s name), Maria and Lisa (my daughters’ names), and Gigi (my blog name).

    Imagine that.

  130. Da Punchbowl Kid June 22, 2012 11:05 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

  133. mctruck June 22, 2012 11:21 am

    Gigi,

yeh!!, ur Heat won!!…enjoy ur paid lunches.

Nice to see so many players hitting them 3’s; I believe it was noted the most 3’s in NBA history?

  134. Wes'side Warrior June 22, 2012 11:23 am

For those in the Salt lake City, Utah area, the Georgia Force (Bryant Moniz and Richard Torres) will be playing at the Energy Solutions Arena, home of the Utah Jazz, tomorrow night, at 7pm.

There’s a meet and greet on the field with da boyz after da game too. Get autographs, take pics, and talk story!

  135. Wes'side Warrior June 22, 2012 11:33 am

Since someone mentioned that a St. Louis alum is on the Utah Blaze roster, I had to wander over to take a look… Shaun Kauleinamoku, WR. Also noticed a certain Boise kicker on their team… a Kyle Brotzman. Why does that name sound familiar??? (I AM being facetious.)

  136. Da Punchbowl Kid June 22, 2012 11:37 am

    Wes’side Warrior –

    Thanks for the scoops!

  137. A-House June 22, 2012 11:39 am

    #126:

    I can relate to that!!!!!!!

  138. A-House June 22, 2012 11:43 am

After my rotator cuff surgery at Kuakini, a cute oriental nurse kept insisting I use the “bed pan” and she would assist – told her to get lost and walked to the toilet.

  139. gigi-hawaii June 22, 2012 12:12 pm

A-House: who the heck says ORIENTAL anymore? It’s supposed to be ASIAN. Lol.

  140. Last Car June 22, 2012 12:22 pm

I finally washed my reddish brown car that is actually silver.

  141. LizKauai June 22, 2012 12:39 pm

Ooooh. Nice email from UH Athletics… Need $$$$$…. excited!!!

  142. A-House June 22, 2012 1:26 pm

    Gigi:

I’m still in the “dark ages”.

Besides who the heck came up with the new terminology?

If you say USA, then USA better look around as they still use the “old” names of countries in Southeast Asia when the country themselves changed their names many, many years ago!

Burma and Cambodia are excellent examples.

  143. jimmy the lock June 22, 2012 1:34 pm

    Isn’t Cambodia still Cambodia?

  144. jimmy the lock June 22, 2012 1:42 pm

    Persia sounds better than Iran.

How come they didn’t change the dog name Rhodesian Ridgeback to Zimbabwaen Ridgeback?

Gold Coast sounds so much fancier than Ghana.

  145. gigi-hawaii June 22, 2012 2:14 pm

There was a time when Thailand was called Siam.

And we all know that Ho Chi Minh City was once Saigon.

  146. gigi-hawaii June 22, 2012 2:16 pm

A-House: Any grandkids yet? When they start coming, your life will change dramatically. Look at ST.

Mine are coming to my home tonight. Can’t wait to see them.

  147. d1shima June 22, 2012 2:24 pm

  151. mctruck June 22, 2012 2:44 pm

Speaking of Cambodia; I used to date a very curvacious young lady back in Hawaii who’s father was Cambodia’s embassador to France. My gosh, could she put away them fresh oysers!!, three-dozen in one sitting!!

  152. mctruck June 22, 2012 2:46 pm

    oysers=oysters.

  153. gigi-hawaii June 22, 2012 2:48 pm

    mctruck: expensive date

  154. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2012 2:49 pm

    SteveM:

I spoke with DPK. He didn’t ask.

  155. mctruck June 22, 2012 2:52 pm

    gigi,

I wanted to see if that popular theory bout oysters was really true…..guess I didn’t order enough oysters……bwaaaahahaha!

  156. gigi-hawaii June 22, 2012 3:01 pm

mctruck: maybe your French wasn’t good enough.

  159. gigi-hawaii June 22, 2012 3:07 pm

  160. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2012 3:08 pm

  163. gigi-hawaii June 22, 2012 3:15 pm

    so funny

  164. gigi-hawaii June 22, 2012 3:16 pm

thank goodness for washing machines. Can you imagine washing clothes in the river?

  165. mctruck June 22, 2012 3:17 pm

    parlez-vous francais, sounds better.

  166. mctruck June 22, 2012 3:19 pm

my grandmother had one of them oldies were you ran your wash thru a roller/ringer thingy and she once got her fingers caught between them rollers….can you imagine how it hurt??

  167. gigi-hawaii June 22, 2012 3:22 pm

Mctruck: how are you going to manage to see the Warrior football games this year? I realize some of them will be on Fox and ESPN, but what about the other games?

  168. mctruck June 22, 2012 3:27 pm

I know!?…I’m a thimkin bout how it’s going to work out for me?…look’s like jist about 5-6 games which I should be able to catch on directv, etc., the rest might be a wash for me.

  169. gigi-hawaii June 22, 2012 3:31 pm

You got direct TV? How is it? Do you like it? Hubby told me that reception depends on the weather. If there is a storm you can’t get a signal.

  170. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2012 3:33 pm

If you have DirecTV, you won’t be getting the WE channel anymore.

  171. mctruck June 22, 2012 3:35 pm

I think it’s far better than cable, except when there’s a storm out there which interrupts viewing. At the same time…that’s how you get cable reception; the cable companies have these huge satelite systems which they then run to house holds via cable hook ups.

  172. gigi-hawaii June 22, 2012 3:40 pm

What I love about Oceanic cable is their customer service. I mean it is fast, thorough, and courteous. I have them for internet, too.

  173. mctruck June 22, 2012 3:50 pm

I’ve had Time Warner cable and road runner internet back in California and whenever the service went down…it could last from several hours to like several days depending on fast they are able to locate the problem. Well with directv…usually the only down time is due to weather.

Right now I use a cable company for my internet and directv for my tv viewing.

  174. mctruck June 22, 2012 3:52 pm

    wats, WE??

  175. WarriorNY June 22, 2012 4:03 pm

  179. gigi-hawaii June 22, 2012 6:16 pm

Last Car: Thanks for the heads up. I definitely will not hire Hawaiian Tel. I’ll stick with cable.

  180. Bugaz June 22, 2012 7:11 pm

Is there a connection between UH Athletics and Stevie Wonder that he is doing a benefit concert? Awesome opportunity!!!

  182. papajoe2 June 22, 2012 9:30 pm

Bugaz~ I just saw it (Stevie Wonder) on the UH website. Advance sale tomorrow for season ticket holders in any sport. Limit 8 tickets. No price mentioned. I want to know if my PPV counts. What about softball or soccer season tickets?jk on this one.

  183. papajoe2 June 22, 2012 9:54 pm

I hope they advertise the Stevie Wonder concert. Seems like no one knows about it. Its a benefit for UH athletics.

  184. jm2375 June 22, 2012 10:19 pm

    papajoe2 – #182

Tickets are priced at $125, $99, $85 and $70 plus a $10 handling fee per ticket.

  185. Kekoa June 22, 2012 10:53 pm

Stevie Wonder? Uhhhh…ok I guess. Great publicity there UH PR peeps. Now you know why ticket sales to everthing is so miserable.

  186. Capitolist/WassupDoc June 22, 2012 11:04 pm

Thanx for the ticket price info, jm2375. Definitely will NOT be going to the event – cannot afford to spend that kind of money on entertainment AND season tickets. I might have been willing to pay $50 for front row seats, but $70 for nosebleed seats behind the stage? No way. Hope some of you who have some extra pennies will go to the concert and then report back to us about the event.
