Spare tire is used only for fixing a flat tire and not for touring the city. Of course, wahine bench has given sparks but regular starters are the well tuned matching that brought wahine volleyball to life after horrific early season tournaments. Why changed the lineup in a crucial game throwing all starters (Granato, Norene, etc) in chaos? Inexperience of coaching staff brought the humiliating defeat as staff was not prepared the game plan according to the opponents’ strengths & weaknesses. At the end of the season, supplementary skills (slides attacks, combination attacks, sneaky setter attacks, etc) required to finish strong. Santa Babara did all that while wahine played only with the basic volley ball skills and got whipped and was painful to watch & I was sighing even in my sleep…Finish up the season strong as unexpected things could happen in favor of wahines!

    4. Castillo could not start; she was not medically cleared to play. Hope that she heals quickly and well and that we see her on the court soon.

Williams had significant minutes the previous night against Cal Poly and had started as M2 earlier in the season, so it wasn’t unheard of for her to get the start. I was hoping that as strong as our 4 middles have been we would see more sets to them. When the right side faltered, I kind of wished we would have seen one of our middles play some time there.

Why can’t wahine volleyball have games like during Klum gym time. Play the same team fri and sat. Have them come to to each place every other year. Hawaii won’t be the lone wolf. Play the same team then both teams will be equally tired the 2nd night, instead of Hawaii tired 2nd night and other team fresh. Maybe do the same for all sports. I didn’t look but softball, baseball and maybe men’s volleyball rotate every other.

Seems like the Wahine are riding the RMS Titanic after colliding with an iceberg named UCSB. HUGE MATCH tomorrow/Tuesday when the Anteaters take on Cal-Poly at Cal-Poly. Results will tell the Bows if it’s time to start singing, “My Heart Will Go On.”

While mathematically the Bows have almost no chance to be chosen by the NCAA (Selection) Committee as one of 32 at-large teams, the automatic-qualifier door to Minneapolis, MN has not slammed shut in their face. Ditto for Irvine. Both are still in the running, but it all depends on what Irvine does when they take on Cal-Poly (twice) and when they visit Manoa.

Should Cal-Poly split its two matches with Irvine but otherwise win out and should the Bows win out, the tiebreaker will no longer go to Rule #3 (win-loss sets) but to Rule #2 (match results against the top teams until the tiebreaker ends). And guess who is the current top team after Cal-Poly and UH in Big West standings?

all these car references, what’s the deal? no one is looking to compare volleyball to a car do they?

  6. H-Man October 29, 2018 9:43 pm

Wow, 61. That’s a 14-pt improvement. I never thought there would be any significant change because of the 0-3 loss to UCSB. One can only wonder what the RPI might have been if the Wahine had taken care of business by beating UCSB.

  7. Robin October 29, 2018 11:17 pm

Maybe that in order to motivate the Wahine to win out, they need something in consolation like an NIVC bid possibility. Even a runner-up finish in the conference is far from guaranteed at this point. Face it, this team was probably a one-and-done like last year if they made the NCAA anyway. I’d like to see the 1 year seniors extend their careers as long as possible. This team may be undersized and not the most talented squad, but they stick together. Going deep in the NIVC should they qualify could be doable and by no means to be looked down upon.

What happened Saturday night was sad but shows the inexperience of our coaching staff who also are learning as we go along. The team was not ready to play/compete and it is the coaches jobs to have the team ready to play. I recall coach Shoji on many occasions after a tough win or loss on a Friday say he has to make sure he gets his team ready to play on Saturday. Fans and players need to put this behind and look forward to the rest of the season, but do this together not against one another.

  9. WaWa October 30, 2018 7:15 am

Does it show the inexperience of our coaching staff? How so?

“I recall coach Shoji on many occasions after a tough win or loss on a Friday say he has to make sure he gets his team ready to play on Saturday.”

Of course he could say that during the prime and even some of his final years. Easy to say when you have at least one legit All-American on your roster and a more talented supporting cast. Experienced coaches like Dave Shoji, Pete Waite, John Dunning, Mike Hebert, Mary Wise, etc. could not get this group miraculously re-energized and ready to go after night one’s performance.

I’m glad Robyn and her staff tried to make a change. They needed one, even if it was drastic. Too many coaches are too scared of repercussions to bench their starters. That is why I have a little more respect for Jerritt Elliot since he wasn’t afraid to sit his prize recruit (Sun). Unfortunately, as many kids who are never told “no” in their life often do, she transferred and Nebraska inherited her deficiencies and look at their success now.

How’s about at the high school level, Coach Blake sits his all-everything setter (Akeo) during the championship match. ‘Iolani had Kamehameha’s number that night. Is Coach Blake inexperienced for resorting to a drastic measure as such?

oh well whatever that is worth.

has robyn looked at elena oglivie crushin the coconut this year?

#14 I doubt very much Lexi Sun left Texas because of being taken out during NCAA. If you watch Nebraska Volleyball she implied that the big ten was basically the highest level of college volleyball (Didn’t want to knock Texas). And her future goal was national team and Olympics.

  12. Brandon Yoshikawa October 30, 2018 10:00 am

Yall, there IS a shot for them to make it. RPI futures have them in the mid 50s with TWO more losses so IF they win out, its VERY possible they get an at large, especially with pepperdine, Cal Poly and two irvine wins.

  13. OrbitalRipZ October 30, 2018 10:10 am

From Big West Women’s Volleyball Release – Week 11: “Hawai’i is featured on ESPN3 twice this week. First up is a showdown versus CSUN Friday night at The Matadome and is followed by a clash with Long Beach State at The Pyramid. First serve for both contests is scheduled for 7:00 pm.”

  14. islandman October 30, 2018 11:07 am

    8. That’s a good idea. Men’s basketball used to do that too.
I think would save money too.
But was it Riley of mbb that didn’t like it ?

  15. Bleachercoach October 30, 2018 12:03 pm

    12. I agree with you totally. In reality we would be better suited in a NIVC tournament. Just to get into a NCAA Tournament would have been a monumental feat this year! I do not underestimate the effort and heart of this team. We had no true athletic leaders you could go to if you needed the “Sure KILL” consistently. (Aka, Nikki Taylor, Emily Harding, and Kim Willoughby) to name a few. Let’s Be Real!! Its is the good coaching that we have reached to where we are and not sitting in the bottom half of the Big West Conference this year. This is a great group of hard working and ‘never say she’s attitude bunch of volleyball players. Although they can be a scrappy at times , no one really possessed that explosive jumping, quick footed athlete that is so DYNAMIC!!
If you don’t have a player or 2 players like that on your team , our expectations should not be high anyways. With all that said, I am proud to be a fan of Hawaii and still love the passion the girls deliver week after week

    Oops computer problem…Emily Hartong

#14. We not only got sweept on Saturday, we got smoked…. Team had no energy and made tons of unforced mistakes. Loss had nothing to do with how coaches substituted or had nerve to do so. The lack of a go to player has been a issued from day one but team had enough spirit and effort in previous matches to make up for the lack of a go to person. No matter how good of players a coach has, if the team is not ready to play, it can be upset. That’s where the coaching needs to be able to see what is happening in the locker room and address the issues before the team gets on the court. I read somewhere in the paper after the game a comment from Robyn that she noticed a lack of energy in the locker room and during warm ups…….??

  18. Cindy Luis October 30, 2018 5:41 pm

    10. of course they are looking at her. Why wouldn’t you think they are?
