Warriors add receiver … Jai Cunningham leaving KHON

Wideout John Johnson of Antelope Valley College told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser he is joining the Warriors.
Johnson, who is originally from Warner Robins, Ga., is 5-11, 190 pounds, and capable of running 100 meters in 10.86 seconds. He averaged 18.2 yards per catch last season.
Johnson said he will report for the July 26 opening of UH’s training camp.
JAI CUNNINGHAM LEAVING KHON
Timing is everything. KHON hired Jai Cunningham as a sports reporter in 1992 — the year the Warriors went 11-2, including an upset of Illinois in the Holiday Bowl.
Ten years later, he moved to news side, where he did everything from report to anchor to host.
Cunningham did his job(s) well, and for a long time. After nearly 26 years with KHON, he is leaving to join HART.
We wish him the best.

    Speed to stretch the field!
    Just what the pundits ordered!
    Welcome John!

    Good luck Jai!

Always room for speedy playmakers. #Newtargets

It will be sweet if Johnson’s speed can get him on the field to be a factor. With Ursua a known quantity and Byrd showing he ain’t no fledgling, the addition of some much needed speed could really enhance the offense. If Armstrong-Brown or whoever is at X, can get that telepathic relationship with the QB for the back shoulder fade it could be deja vu all over again….pending a QB that can deliver the pineapple of course.

Wish Spectrum would have an app on Roku where the mainland fans can order a pay-per-view game anytime.

  6. boolakanaka July 16, 2018 9:17 am

The new kid, JJ, seems to be an athletic receiver with some real good wheels, but not a really precise route runner—but that’s not surprising coming from the JC ranks. With some good coaching and effort on his part, he can become more sophisticated in his craft…..

Antelope Valley College was founded by former Rainbow Warrior Marco Johnson.

  8. islandman July 16, 2018 9:51 am

Taryn Hatcher went to NBC Sports Philadelphia. I noticed KITV sports has
MG Montemayor from Texas, then California. KHON sports has Ren Clayton from Minnesota and then S Dakota.

From the 1st game during Chow era really missed excitement of run & shoot. Was disappointed for first 2 years of Rolo regime with run pass option, mostly runs with mediocre results. Excited in his 3rd year Rolo committing full on to R&S. After 6 years hopefully betta times ahead accurate passing and speedy receivers and 1000 yard backs which we use to have in the R&S. Would really help if we get one Warrior mascot to lead da charge.

Happy for him. We will miss Jai on tv news.

Man good luck to Jai but how screwed up does your current job have to be that you VOLUNTEER TO MOVE TO HART AND RAIL? Didn’t Mizutani just leave, then Spangler, then the weather lady McKenna? What is up buttercup at Channel 2?
Nothing tougher to communicate than transportation. Nothing tougher to communicate about transportation then the worst managed public works project in the history of America. And the worst is yet to come with rail – we have no money to fully fund it.
Have fun trying to spin us with that Jai.

I second what Boolakanka said. To add to that, our best years were in the RnS with plenty of receivers who could make plays. Let’s see more of that.

  13. Da Punchbowl Kid July 16, 2018 11:55 am

Good luck to Jai, a nice guy.

  14. Duster July 16, 2018 12:08 pm

J Johnson has thick upper legs. Resembles Larry Khan-Smith to me. Very nice addition to Warriors!

Do people still watch the news on TV? I’m wondering how ratings are nowadays with by-the-minute access via devices.

Don’t really notice who is on the news stations anymore. 10 years ago this would have been a big deal. Jai was a good one though. I wish home well at HART. BTW, that might be a tough place to work considering how people feel about rail.

Jai is leaving an honorable position to join the Dark Side. Unfortunate.

  17. roygbivs July 16, 2018 1:45 pm

Speed. Like what our WRs lineup could be!

    Byrd
    Ursua
    Johnson
    Stubblefield
    Stallworth
    Greeley
    Rooks
    Mardner

Hope Timoteo and Leeth can make a U-turn on their studies ….

  18. islandman July 16, 2018 1:59 pm

Why is it the dark side ? All people in government are on the dark side ?
How many people at the time a long ago wanted the H-1 built ?

  19. clyde July 16, 2018 2:16 pm

Wish Jai the best. How can you fault a family man for taking a position with better hours, and probably better benefits and better pay? I was once told — and this is very simplistic, mind you — that there are two pay scales at KHON: Joe Moore’s and everyone else’s.

    How it Tsaikos!
Off topic, those who wondered why Michelle Wie doesn’t play in more tournaments:

    Welcome aboard, Jj!
    Good luck, Jai!

Johnson does not really excite me. He seems to run mostly streaks or fly pattern. Does not have the ability to cut on a dime and elude defenders like Byrd or Ursua. He will be strictly someone that could run up the field and open the middle for the slots.

We had speed on the outside(Keelan Ewaliko) these past couple of years but our outsider receivers haven’t had much success. Only exception is Marcus Kemp.

Hope that doesn’t mean that MIchael Washington is not coming. I like Washington much better.

    14. and 16.

    I like you both.

I like that you both acknowledge my posts.

But I’m with the former on this one.

Any word if the matte helmets will make a return or did they canned.

  24. burro sabio July 16, 2018 8:48 pm

islandman, it’s not government in general, it’s HART in particular.

    Howzit Tsaikos!

Welcome to the Warrior ‘ohana, Mr. Johnson.

    Best wishes to Mr. Cunningham.

Late comment on the lower season ticket sales – 1 more factor – no can deduct the premium seat fees anymore. I kept my seats for this season, but I may have to rethink it for future seasons.

Heard HawaiianTel in talks with Spectrum to air OC16 primetime. Might be able to watch Wahine VB now. 😆

    GO WARRIORS!
    GO WAHINE!

Outside of a winning football program, I still think the parking situation at Aloha Stadium is the biggest reason fans have stopped going for games. The best tailgate areas are VIP designated areas and are too expensive. Meanwhile, the general parking area is crammed. So, it’s easier, better for groups to gather at someone’s home at watch on PPV.

  27. Stephen Tsai July 17, 2018 6:35 am

    H-Man:
I think the parking isn’t bad.
For instance … at Boise, we have a parking pass, but we’re still in a structure so far away you can’t even see the stadium.
If you go to some other places, it’ll cost an arm and a leg and maybe the second arm and leg to pay for parking.
