Warrior Beat: Ursua leaves UH to pursue pro dream

One of the most prolific receivers in Warrior football history β€” John Ursua β€” has decided to forgo his senior season in 2019 and apply for the NFL Draft.

Ursua told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser his decision was based on his age (he turns 25 next month) and production the past two seasons. Ursua leads the nation in TD receptions (16), and is fifth in receiving yards (5), eighth in receiving yards per game (103.3) and 10th in catches per game (6.8).

Ursua said he still is recovering from an injury to his left hamstring, and will not resume training until for another week or two.

Good decision John! Will be watching you on Sundays. Good Luck and Mahalo for playing for the Warriors!
Hopefully Jahlani will be there on Sundays too.

  2. Chicken Grease December 25, 2018 7:45 am

Yeah BYE already, geez. Injured. Or whatever. Right. Could NOT gove one last effort in the bowl. Thansk for everything, JOHN πŸ™„

  3. PONO December 25, 2018 7:58 am

Best of luck to Mr. Ursua. Thanks for turning around the program.

  4. burro sabio December 25, 2018 8:36 am

I’m a proponent for staying in school cause only golf lasts forever, but it’s John’s life, good luck to him.

  5. burro sabio December 25, 2018 8:37 am

Mike Edwards made the biggest mistake by leaving early.

  6. rabbit ears December 25, 2018 8:52 am

Think he has a shot. He said age (25 ) was a big factor. He may not get drafted which may be a blessing. So he can go where there is a need/chance.

  7. islandman December 25, 2018 9:22 am

    cappie, re: prior post,

Good luck to John. I believe you will be drafted in the first three rounds. Thanks for being a Warrior.

  9. A-House December 25, 2018 10:17 am

all the best to Mr. Ursua — hook up with the 49ers!!!

  10. suckkabooya December 25, 2018 11:15 am

For Ursua I think it’s just a matter of getting stronger. Not NFL strong right now. He has all the other tools though especially his ability to separate vs man coverage short or long with his variety of set up moves. Going to miss his savvy route reading. Could have made the difference in slowing Louisiana Tech’s blitz schemes with one big play. Was an even match-up until his late scratch. The game would have been incredibly close had he played, similar to the first half, real chess game would have been. Too bad. Good luck to him. He may not get drafted but once he gets a little bigger and stronger his package will be complete. The next Edelman.

  11. Da Punchbowl Kid December 25, 2018 11:28 am

He gave us his all! I give him my aloha and support!

    Merry Christmas to all!

Hey #2 Greasy Chicken…way to get into the Christmas Spirit, doubting Ursua’s injury. Oh so easy to cluck out a response from behind a keyboard. Good luck John, just about everyone else appreciates your efforts for the UH. #Goodluck

Mahalo John for coming home and helping build the program. Good luck with your pro aspirations. Have only one request: Can you take a couple blog posters with you? You know who they are.

  18. SteveM December 25, 2018 12:39 pm

Good luck to John Ursua! Hate to see him go but I agree this is his best shot now.

  21. Savich December 25, 2018 4:01 pm

Good afternoon. Merry Christmas! That was a horrible Hawai’i Bowl. They can’t catch for didly. Nobody can.

  22. Savich December 25, 2018 4:05 pm

I was at the game. I am one of the Ushers. 2 seasons now. I get free watch at the games and plus I get paid for a few hours. It’s a side dish job. I like it.

Hawai’i Bowl was horrible. But I’m glad it turned out this way. My predictions about the game came through. Hawai’i was not the better team. Everything worked well. Happy New Years!

  23. Savich December 25, 2018 4:12 pm

I am chilling out on Kaua’i. Poipu side of the island. I’ll be at the fireworks show display.

    New year’s eve

  24. Savich December 25, 2018 4:23 pm

I’m still wondering, which has more worth, The Eagles concert t shirt or the Hawai’i Bowl t shirt? They didn’t come out with the Eagles Concert t shirt yet. With picture on it and the city names.

When will they be coming out with the t shirt?

  25. Savich December 25, 2018 4:27 pm

Also, when will they be opening the fireworks display club to the public? You know, one of the pyro – technicians. Sure can’t wait to join this club.

  26. Savich December 25, 2018 4:35 pm

I would think resumes only on the pyro-technicians job. No dumbos allowed. And you certainly cannot apply for this job with the fire department. What a joke? I told the fire department that.

  27. Savich December 25, 2018 4:59 pm

I only work at the games. Football games. And the concerts. Nothing else. It’s a seasonal job. Some ones got to do it. I’ll be back for a 3rd season.

Again vying for a Hawai’i Bowl in 2019. See you at the 3rd season.

  28. cappie the dog December 25, 2018 11:57 pm

    Arizona, Washington State, Oregon State.

John Ursua is making the right choice.

Why would you make a schedule like this on purpose?

Going into Mountain West play, how many players will be on the active roster?

At least there is a bye fitted between Arizona and Washington State.

I hope he follows in the footsteps of Jeff Sydner, the only player I can think of who left early and made a NFL roster.

  29. seewhy December 26, 2018 12:24 am

    RE: #27

It’s not WSU, we are playing UW. Yes, the same UW that won the PAC12 and is playing in the Rose Bowl. All I have to say is thank God Browning and Gaskin are seniors.

  30. cappie the dog December 26, 2018 5:58 am

It would be fine, or, at least, better, if Hawaii played two Pac-12 opponents at the outset, and played the third team as the finale. As it is, these first three games are a pretty daunting task. This reminds me of Mike Trapasso when he started the season with 5 games against Oregon and 4 games against Rice. I believe the baseball team started the season 0-13.

For the time being, the goal is to make the post-season. So you schedule winnable games to ensure seven wins. Unexpectedly, the breather game is not a breather anymore. Army is not Army anymore. Army is ARMY. Not the Army that the Warriors beat late at their place because they fumbled the center/quarterback exchange.

GRRRRRR! 70 points! We will ball control you to death.

I checked to see if starting QB Kelvin Hopkins is returning.

Damn, he is. Army may be a pre-season AP Top 25 team.

The only guarantee victory is Central Arkansas.

That means Hawaii needs to go 6-2 in conference play.

The second victory has to come against one of the three Pac-12 teams and a surprising independent.

Oregon State would appear to be the most likely candidate.

That is the most important game on the schedule.

Then Hawaii only needs to go 5-3 against the Mountain West.

So Boise State will probably return to the schedule. If the MWC hates Hawaii, which is my theory, they’ll send the team to Laramie.

I think a Hawaii quarterback playing every down will result in a potential season-ending injury. Hawaii should develop a two-quarterback system.

John Ursua leaving only makes things harder.

  31. H-Man December 26, 2018 6:26 am

There is no bye week in the first four weeks of the season. Warriors open against Arizona at Aloha Stadium and follow with Oregon St at home and UDub on the road at Seattle. Why open the season with such a tough schedule? First, $$$$$. Secondly, it generates local excitement and brings in the fans to Aloha Stadium. Third, the NCAA allows a FBS football school to schedule only one non-FBS a season without jeopardizing bowl qualification. Next season, that school is the University of Central Arkansas. And Oregon State not so tough. I would make Hawaii the favored team. There’s a fourth reason. Hawaii, like most FBS schools, prefer scheduling home and away series. These are the schools that are willing to schedule home and away within their own scheduling. And it just happens to work out this way. In any case the Warriors play two tough, non-conference P5 schools every year on a going-forward basis. In 2019 it’s Arizona and Washington. It gets tougher in 2020 with Arizona, UCLA and Oregon on the schedule.

  32. islandman December 26, 2018 8:12 am

There is a bye after the Arizona game, i think. That game is played on Aug 24, then the next game is on Sept 7 vs. Oregon St.
Is there any other bye in the schedule ?

  33. iGrokSpock December 26, 2018 8:59 am

Best wishes and good luck to John Ursua. Appreciated his talent on the field. Rehab and stay healthy going forward.

  34. Boolakanaka December 26, 2018 9:05 am

Chicken grease, it’s good thing you don’t sit in the parent’s section at the game. John’s pop, is a real Halawa OG, and if anyone knows him personally, despite being in his late 50s, he in great shape, (he and John look exactly alike) he would pull your card in a second. Just love these internet warriors, talking all kinds of bs, that they would never dare say to anyone in person….sometimes, silence is golden, and in your case, might very well preserve your well being.

  35. suckkabooya December 26, 2018 9:18 am

The Arizona game is the most important game in recent memory. This game will set the tone for the course of the season and more importantly determine the course of the direction of UH Football. The perfect opponent (in my opinion) to see if you can reach that “next level” as a program. Nothing less. Perfect.

The Wildcats were the one team that might have been younger (as an entire roster) than the Warriors. If we played them this year would have been a good but overmatched match-up. I think we would have lost (or maybe won depending on defense) a close game if it were here. Or by 10 to 20 points if at Arizona. Somewhere in between Fresno St, Army and San Diego St in ability. When we do play them next season, the key will be the loudness of the crowd, “Home field advantage” edge for the Warriors. Important. The crowd will be the difference. We (us the fans) got to do it.

A victory will give UH momentum toward a top 25 push. An impressive victory (possible with a “nutz” crowd) could put UH on that “next level” of confidence headed toward Army and Washington. A loss however could reframe the strategy toward conference play and Hawaii Bowl. But this is the “test” that we need to see. Coach Rolovich and crew has a lot to do until then (especially in replacing the impact of Ursua). Matlin too (gotta market this right). They can do this. So awesome now. Lucky for us.

  36. A-House December 26, 2018 9:23 am

if UH has any dreams of playing on 1/1/ — they will have to be like UCF and play any Power5 team and win

UCF has been successful in this respect to stay “perfect” the past 2 years

I believe young Gabriel made the right decision to attend UCF — McKenzie’s injury is very serious/severe and he may not be able to play until 2020 — good chance to challenge for the starting spot

  37. islandman December 26, 2018 11:37 am

Raimo was named to the DHC All-Tournament team. Many doubted his abilities in the past.

  38. A-House December 26, 2018 12:51 pm

2019 season — Coderio will be #1 QB when summer training ends — McDonald #2 and Mousa (sp)#3. — incoming QB can red-shirt and learn the system

OL needs to be stronger and faster — cannot allow player like La Tech’s #98 or was it #89 smash through 2 blockers and sack the QB

  39. turfwar December 26, 2018 12:58 pm

Remember Daniel Faalele out of Australia? He is playing now on ESPN for Minnesota against GT and as a true freshman is doing pretty well. Very large at 6’9″ 400 he took over the starting right tackle position after the fifth game or so and has been there the rest of the season. Still raw but he should be a force to reckon with for years.

  40. Savich December 26, 2018 2:50 pm

I wish John Ursua the best in the NFL. Good luck to him. Sorry he couldn’t play in the Hawai’i Bowl.

Next season again for Hawai’i. He deserves all the glory.

  41. Savich December 26, 2018 2:53 pm

I put John Ursua on a pedal stool. He deserves it. He earned it. All the other athletes never deserved the honor, so I’ll give it to John Ursua.

  42. Boolakanaka December 26, 2018 2:57 pm

Chicken grease puts the chicken in chicken grease… go back to working the Saimin stand at half-time.

  43. Savich December 26, 2018 2:58 pm

All the glory and honor of the MWC football belongs to John Ursua. All the others before him, include KIF never had it. It has all been given to John Ursua.

The others are fake and flake. They are the hypocrites of college football.

  44. Savich December 26, 2018 3:03 pm

I do not recognize past players of KIF. The only one is their mayor because he is 6-6. All the others, never played. I don’t care if they say they played. That includes baseball and basketball. Though I doubt basketball had any KIF stars. Include volleyball also. I choose not to recognize them, as they never played.

  45. Savich December 26, 2018 3:08 pm

Chayce Ka’aua played for Hilo High School. He was 5-10 1/2 tall.

    UH baseball.

  46. Savich December 26, 2018 3:13 pm

Kelsey Isa played for Kaiser High School Cougars, 1982. So did Mario Monico, for the Farrington HS Governors. Sid Fernandez came out of the Kaiser HS Cougars also. 1979. Derek Tatsuno came out of Aiea High School, 1975.

  47. Savich December 26, 2018 3:23 pm

This is my computer. So no name goes into it. You will only give me viruses by being a shitty player from KIF.

  48. Savich December 26, 2018 3:35 pm

I think Rolo should seriously consider looking at his recruits JCs and see if they can start right away. Especially on defense. They need defense as all their defense has disappeared.

They can start Picanco and Pavihi next year, but what about the back up. 2 LB are needed and DB to fill in are also needed. The LM also will go. So they have serious filling in to do.

  49. Savich December 26, 2018 3:51 pm

Next year, I’ll have to wait & see. But I think Cole McDonald should start again. Chevan Cordeiro won’t start or play. Jeremy Moussa will be backing up Cole at 6-3.

I think again it will be a locals contest. Chavan trying to get in. Look for fan interference or fan inputs, to change it to locals at home and quarterback. So Chavan will have his work cut out. 6-1.

  50. Savich December 26, 2018 3:58 pm

The fans at home will definitely be cheering for their home town favorite, Chevan Cordeiro, at 6-1. But in all likelihood, Jeremy Moussa at 6-3 and Cole McDonald at 6-4 already owns the number 1 and 2 spot of the quarterback lineup.

  51. Savich December 26, 2018 4:05 pm

I don’t need Waimea HS or Kapa’a high school or even Kaua’i High school. All your players are shitty this year. Fact. So you will be left off my list.

    That is all.

  52. cappie the dog December 26, 2018 4:21 pm

    islandman:

It’s not the sky hook, but that little hook-like shot of his, so far, seems unblockable. At least, I haven’t seen it blocked yet with my own eyes.

    Work ethic is so important.

Raimo should be proud of himself.

He turned himself into a legitimate D1 player.

  53. Savich December 26, 2018 4:54 pm

    Because KIF give 10% tithes.

  54. Savich December 26, 2018 5:05 pm

    Club OIA/ILH.

    “Your may enter” Aloha Stadium.

  55. Savich December 26, 2018 5:16 pm

What evers? Now I’m a Aloha Stadium park usher? I personally think KIF sucks. But then again, no one ever does pay attention to a Vaughn Meatoga.

  56. Savich December 26, 2018 5:24 pm

The great thing is, just call it, the quarterback sucks. Or the linemen sucks. Here’s my card, I’m working. I have every right to call it out. KIF sucks.

  57. Savich December 26, 2018 5:30 pm

Because I’m better than you. Yes, even for working as a Aloha stadium usher. I can say it. No they don’t hire me to say it. We think alike. Yes, I do too. KIF does suck. See?

  58. Savich December 26, 2018 5:58 pm

14 UH home games, 2 concerts, maybe 1 more to concert to go, start of a 3rd season. Like I said, I’m better than you.

KIF sucks. Usher at Aloha Stadium.

  59. izzy December 26, 2018 6:21 pm
