Chance Kalaugher, a former two-time All-State basketball player, has joined the UH football team.

Kalaugher, a 2016 Kaiser High graduate, is 6 feet 6 and 230 pounds. He is projected to compete at defensive end. He also is a consideration as a jump-ball receiver in goal-line situations.

As a Kaiser junior and senior, Kalaugher was named to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Fab 15 team. He earned a reputation as an active defender and vicious dunker.

Kalaugher played basketball the past two seasons at Saddleback Community College. After earning his associate’s degree, he enrolled at UH in the 2018 fall semester. After meeting with the UH football coaches, he was extended an invitation to join the Warriors.

Kalaugher will compete in the offseason conditioning program and spring training.

A decade ago, Ikaika Alama-Francis and Nkeruwem “Tony” Akpan made similar moves from basketball forwards to football defensive ends. Alama-Francis was selected by the Detroit Lions in the second round of the 2007 NFL Draft.

    Welcome home, Chance Kalaugher.

    6’6, 230. Jump ball receiver,

    Field goal and PAT blocker

Both much needed skills / ability.

    2019 looking better.

    GO WARRIORS !!!

  3. Uh4eva January 13, 2019 4:07 am

Wow. An interesting addition. Go warriors.

  4. warriorrebel January 13, 2019 5:28 am

good get, could still be a 2 sport athlete for uh sports. 6 foot 6 receiver! good size for small forward with Purchase graduating. good walk on athlete for both sports.

  5. suckkabooya January 13, 2019 7:29 am

Good start (for conceding that this offense could use a tall/big WR/H/TE). Goal line only. Not a real wide out. He is a edge setting 2pt stance DE. We need to get a real, legit tall/big “jump ball” receiver eventually. Chase should bring a different dimension to the perimeter defensively. Weight room every day.

    2017 draft?

Sorry. Chance not Chase. This role would have been perfect for Unga last year. Too bad.

  9. Stephen Tsai January 13, 2019 7:45 am

    Hank
    Thanks for the catch

I think ‘Unga is living/training in Utah. Not sure what went wrong but ‘Unga certainly has next-level talent.

  11. suckkabooya January 13, 2019 10:00 am

Once he gets stronger and thicker (to be able to absorb contact) Ursua should be just like Edleman. The skillsets are so similar.

  12. H-Man January 13, 2019 11:10 am

I’d like to see Kalaugher work out at receiver. Team has 11 DEs, but no receiver with Chance’s size. Mardner is 6-5, but only 190. Chance is like a TE. Use him the same way they used Dakota Torres.

Brian Norwood named Co-Defensive Coordinator and corners coach at Navy. This is Norwood’s second stint at Navy. Norwood was Kansas State’s Co-Defensive Coordinator and DBs coach last season and earned $405,000 there.

Looks like Sarkisian is heading back to Alabama, possibly as offensive coordinator.

  15. kahuna January 13, 2019 12:12 pm

Speaking of Alabama…I wonder if coaches enjoy working there. There seems to have a lot of coaches turnover for a storied program like Alabama. I understand Mike Locksley leaving for a head coaching job at Maryland but they also had QB coach Dan Enos leave and Co-DC Josh Gattis. I believe Enos leaves for Miami and Gattis leaves for Michigan. Its not like they moving to the NFL. Those moves by Enos and Gattis seemed to be a lateral move at best. Remember a few years back, Lane Kiffin left. Steve Sarkisian left and now comes back.

Is Saban a pain to work with or something???

  16. NorthShoreFan January 13, 2019 1:42 pm

    Welcome Home!
What are the chances of him being converted into a hybrid WR/Tight End? With his size, he would definitely be a problem in coverage. He seems to have some wheels and hands, playing basketball and all.

  17. Boolakanaka January 13, 2019 1:44 pm

ST- you forgot the original b-ball conversion -Sam Johnson. (It didn’t take)

  18. NorthShoreFan January 13, 2019 1:45 pm

Just saw somebody wen huki my blog tag on another site….no good.

  19. Chicken Grease January 13, 2019 1:50 pm

    Can he play football?

  20. clyde January 13, 2019 2:00 pm

#18: He played DE for Kaiser.

  21. burro sabio January 13, 2019 2:03 pm

Charlie Williams played basketball and football back in the 1970’s. MadDog’s teammate?

Welcome. Welcome. Always good to see talented players.

  24. pakipark January 13, 2019 5:13 pm

Let’s bulk him up to 330# and have him play OT. Chance Kalaugher probably got good footwork skills.
Welcome, good luck on the football field.

  25. cappie the dog January 13, 2019 6:31 pm

    Sam Johnson!

    Holy Larry Little!!!

Moved like an offensive lineman, which would be okay, if he was an offensive lineman, and not a small forward.

  26. roygbivs January 14, 2019 1:05 am

Eh, strange how E.G. and the basketball team overlooked him?? I think we could use him on the hardwood.

  27. seewhy January 14, 2019 3:53 am

Saw Chance play ball at the state tournament. He was legit. I was surprised he never made a D1 roster. Glad to see him giving football a try.

  28. Akamai Okole January 14, 2019 4:54 am

    Great Morning All!

    WooHoo!

    Now get Chance!

    😆

  29. palolo_2LA January 14, 2019 5:41 am

Looks like he has nimble feet, a nose for the ball and good athletic ability. Played TE and DE, so could be a situational guys for D or O. Welcome back, Chance.

  30. A-House January 14, 2019 7:24 am

    Chance K:

short yardage situations including goal line — use him as a “slot” — go out 2 or 3 steps, turn left or right, go toward the middle for a short pass — 1st down or TD

Florida game in 2007 — Tebow did a “jump pass” to his TE coming across the middle for a TD!! only ‘jump pass’ I saw in the last 25 years.

  31. Maddog50 January 14, 2019 8:38 am

He tried out but BB was his game. Mike Blackshire gave it a shot also. Dennis Salas played DB and a guard on MBB.

  32. islandman January 14, 2019 8:39 am

    24. Maybe Ganot thought he wasn’t “good” enough. However, yesterday’s paper said Chance was recruited by the football team when he was a 2016 senior at Kaiser.
Yesterday’s paper also had a detailed write-up about the UH baseball team. They are trying to get more speed on the team, starting with Scotty Scott.
Demeter is out for the season. Pouelsen lost some weight.
Note: They have to replace Rees and Uskali who accounted for 11 of UH’s 27 wins last season.

  33. Maddog50 January 14, 2019 8:45 am

    Referring to #20

  34. burro sabio January 14, 2019 9:13 am

The story in the SA said that Chance didn’t qualify out of high school.

Thanks MD50. I wasn’t sure if Salas played football and didn’t know that Blackshire gave it a shot too.

  35. Ed Jaction Furst January 14, 2019 11:21 am

    24. CG averaged 3.8 pts, shot 40%, 3pt shot 20%, FT 62%, 1.9 rebounds in his last year at Saddleback JC and you’re whining that UH didn’t recruit him for bball? LOL!!!!!!

That being said hope he’s a stud on the FB field.

  36. winning January 14, 2019 11:48 am

If Chance em got some speed, big threat! short yardage-big threat. Lots of possibilities for tackle eligible-situational TE short yardage, even slot, OL, DL. Sounds good. Question is does he have good hands? Should have decent hands to play hoops. We’ll see.

  37. clyde January 14, 2019 12:29 pm

I was almost certain Sallas played football, too, but when I checked the UH website for all-time letter winners, he was not among those listed. Odd …

  38. hilorain January 14, 2019 1:12 pm

is that 2 days, 2 Kaiser Cougar transfers/recruits?

  39. ai-eee-soos January 14, 2019 1:24 pm

Gov. David Ige appointed three new members of the University of Hawaii Board of Regents today, including Kamehameha Schools’ executive Alapaki Nahale-a and former Kauai Fire Chief Robert Frank Westerman.

The third new member of the university’s governing board is Kelli K.K. Acopan, a student regent, who is pursuing her master’s degree in history at UH-Manoa. She served as president of the Associated Students of the University of Hawaii at Windward Community College.

The appointments are subject to Senate confirmation.

  40. Boolakanaka January 14, 2019 1:32 pm

Mike Akiu gave baseball a whirl a couple of springs, and I know they had him at under 4 seconds, somewhere in the mid 3 second range, from home to first. Alas, like many before him, the slider was not his friend….

  41. Old School Dave January 14, 2019 5:34 pm

Since UH and the State want a small stadium, they should watch this video.

    https://youtu.be/kaa-cGjTCbg

  42. madeinhawaii January 14, 2019 6:58 pm

Small Stadium = Higher prices. Supply and Demand.

  43. Boolakanaka January 15, 2019 7:16 am

I was perusing his college stats, and some things are a bit alarming: he played a total of 248 minutes or over a season, the equivalent of about 6 games, but spread over a season. And his personal fouls and turnovers were fairly high, given his spot play: over 40 personal fouls and close to 20 turnovers. Now, remember he only started one game on the JC level—- maybe football is his game.

  44. Inyoface January 15, 2019 8:16 am

Norm chow has about 3 or 4 players he recruited in the NFL. Too bad he couldn’t recruit a qb that good.
