Upbeat ending to 4th week of spring ball

One of the most joyous moments of the day — heck, of spring training — was wideot Devan Stubblefield’s touchdown during the scrimmage-like session.

On third-and-10, Stubblefield, who is aligned on the right side, runs a snag route (mini curl). Stubblefield catches the pass from Cole McDonald, spins away from two defenders and finds the end zone. At least we think he did. After he crossed the plane, the entire offense surrounded Stubblefield in celebration.

“That was a big play for him,” Nick Rolovich said, noting Stubblefield’s injury-laced UH career. “They’ve seen him struggle. It wasn’t his own fault. It was injuries. But they’ve seen him persevere. Those types of great personal moments happen when you sweat and grind for years.”

Stubblefield, who has conquered two ACL injuries, has embraced a one-play-at-a-time approach.

“I try to come out and make a play for my team every day,” Stubblefield said.

Of the TD, Stubblefield said, “the object of football is to score, right? I saw the end zone. I had to get in.”

The TD culminated a 97-yard drive. “He turned it into a big play,” McDonald said. “That was a momentum changer. It’s nice to throw it players who can make plays.”

Two near-future UH quarterbacks — Chevan Cordeiro and Kolney Cassel — attended today’s practice. Even though they’re visiting spectators, they were focused on taking mental reps.

Huge congrats to Devan. To those who haven’t had a chance to meet this young man I will tell you he is the definition of a gentleman. Humble and gracious he is a joy to talk to. Got a chance to meet him at baseball games where he was a great player for the Crusaders when they played at Kailua. He could have easily played baseball in college if he wanted. His hitting and speed around the bases were a joy to watch. Even when he played against you it was hard not to root for him.

Move Kekai Rios to the three spot.

There was no hesitation relegating Vchulek to the nine hole.

    Ethan Lopez hits clean-up.

You don’t sit the other two guys, just let them find their swing.

Here is a good spot for Dylan Thomas.

Runners on first and third with two outs.

Coach Trapasso put Thomas in a non-save situation against Bakersfield, but not against a conference foe?

    I’m psychic.

The two guys I lauded just put Hawaii in a position to tie or take the lead.

    Rios singled.
    Lopez double.

    C’mon, Ramirez.

You were drafted out of high school.

Hawaii is in this position because Demeter beat out the throw to first on a fielder’s choice.

    Good for Devan!

How was the rest of the scrimmage, Stephen?

  11. cappie the dog April 21, 2018 5:47 pm

    C’mon, three and four!

    Wow.

    Intentional walk for Kekai Rios.

There are years when nobody gets intentionally walked.

  13. cappie the dog April 21, 2018 5:54 pm

    Yes!!!

Demeter overcompensates for his sometimes crappy defense.

It’s a down year for the Titans because the lead-off hitter was bunting for a single.

Dylan Thomas works fast like Matt Cooper.

    Great win.

    This is a good team.
