Live football blog: Hawaii vs. Oregon State

Hawaii holds on for a 31-28 victory over Oregon State.

The Warriors open the season 2-0 for the third consecutive year with their second victory over a Pac-12 opponent.

* * * *

Oregon State’s Jordan Choukair was wide right fro 52 yards with 1:15 left to help the Warriors maintain a 31-28 lead.

* * * * *

The fourth time was the charm.

After missing wide left on three previous field-goal attempts, Ryan Meskell drains a 28-yarder (from the right hash) to give the Warriors a 31-28 lead with 2:17 to play.

* * * * *

The Warriors miss a chance to break a 28-all tie when Ryan Meskell is wide left for the third time, this attempt from 48 yards.

* * * * *

It’s 28-all at the end of the third quarter, but the Warriors are driving.

Right wideout JoJo Ward has seven catches for 163 yards and four touchdowns. He is averaging 23.1 yards per reception.

* * * * *

Cole McDonald and JoJo Ward do it for the fourth time — 1 29-yard scoring pass to help the Warriors tie it at 28 with 7:05 left in the third quarter.

The play was set up when slotback Cedric Byrd broke off his route, freeing Ward for a one-on-one coverage for his fourth TD catch of the game.

* * * * *

ESPN 1420 is reporting UH safety Ikem Okeke and running back Dayton Furuta are injured and will not play in the second half.

* * * * *

The Warriors close to 28-21 on Cole McDonald’s 5-yard scoring pass to JoJo Ward with 12 seconds left in the first half.

The drive was kept alive when McDonald connected with Jared Smart for 12 yards on fourth-and-4.

* * * * * *

It’s one of those nights for the Warriors. The Warriors appeared to stop Jermar Jefferson on a third-and-10 run. But OSU right tackle Brandon Kipper, who played for the Warriors in 2017, was called for a false start. On the dead-ball foul, the ball was placed at the 45. Jake Luton fired a 20 yard pass to Kolby Taylor, and then Artavos Pierce ran 25 yards for his second TD and a 28-14 OSU lead.

* * * * *

The Warriors close to 21-14 on Cole McDonald’s 35-yard pass to JoJo Ward on a post play with 12:07 left in the first half. It’s the second time McDonald and Ward have collaborated on a TD tonight.

* * * * *

The Beavers go up 21-7 on a 13-yard pass from Jake Luton to Isaiah Hodgins with 12:42 left in the first half. Hodgins has caught four of the five passes in which he was the primary target.

* * * * *

The Beavers have a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter … and are driving. The possession was set up when Nashon Wright intercepted Cole McDonald, who was hit while throwing. This season, McDonald has 5 TD passes and 5 picks.

* * * * *

Oregon State is dominating on the ground, scoring their second touchdown on Artavis Pierce’s 37-yard rush. The Beavers, who now lead 14-7, are averaging 12.0 yards per rush.

* * * * *

The Warriors tie it at 7 on Cole McDonald’s 29-yard toss to JoJo Ward with 6:54 to play. The play was set up on Melquise Stovall’s 65-yard kickoff return.

* * * * *

Jermar Jefferson rushes four times for 60 yards on a 71-yard scoring drive, the last 4 on a dive, to give the Beavers a 7-0 lead with 7:44 to play.

* * * * *

The Warriors drive to the OSU 29 on opening possession, but Cole McDonald’s throw to Jason-Matthew Sharsh is just short in the end zone. Ryan Meskell then is wide left on a 47-yard FG attempt. It’s scoreless with 10:08 left in the first quarter.

* * * * *

Oregon State, which gave up 555 yards last week, won the toss and elected to start the game on defense.

* * * * *

The Warriors are going for their second victory in a row against a Pac-12 team — and their third consecutive 2-0 start — when they play host to Oregon State today at Aloha Stadium.

There will be familiarity on both sidelines. OSU assistant coaches Legi Suiaunoa, Kefense Hynson and Jake Cookus used to coach at UH. Warrior linebackers coach Mark Banker was the Beavers’ defensive coordinator.

    Defense is lacking, again. 142 yards given up in a quarter is a bit much.

  9. Inyoface September 7, 2019 7:37 pm

    They need to make cole more of a dual threat and have him run more.

    How the hell do you miss two field goals in your own house. Ridiculous.

  12. Chicken Grease September 7, 2019 9:15 pm

    Excuse me. Now 3. How do you miss 3 field goals in your own house.

    Go for two, now, at all HI TDs (if we are lucky 🙄).

    Now leave our islands, Oregon State. With your strange, cheating mailings to our players. Your Portland-nesses. Your furry beings with overbites. And so many rivers. Just where the heck are you on the U.S. map.

    Get your own players who want to be beavers.

    Thought there were more than 25,141 in the house. At least it appeared that way. We had a ton of rowdy, rocking millennials in our section. It must have been loud down on the field. Fun times.

    Main thing Warriors pull out the win in another nail-biter. Warriors 2-0 in Pac12. Going for 3-0 next week. Chehooooo…..!!!

  21. Oneseason September 8, 2019 12:24 am

    UW is going to be in a foul mood after losing to Cal. I hope the coaches can pull a rabbit out of the hat.

  22. Jeezy33 September 8, 2019 1:37 am

    Glad Gus Lavaka never got to put a Hawai’i Jersey on. He don’t deserve it.

    RE: #22

    I second that. What a sore loser.

  24. Maddog50 September 8, 2019 5:22 am

    Face book was great-dropped Passes, missed tackles, missed field goals, are the only negatives. The effort was there and quite clearly Hawaii deserved to win, overall a better team. All of the shortcomings that happened usually result in a loss. Arizona and OSU should recognize and accept the fact they were beaten by a better team period. Now the only concern is getting guys back and getting guys healthy. Great game, great victory-GoWarriors!!!

  25. H-Man September 8, 2019 6:12 am

    Clyde, yeah, from my perspective it appeared to be closer to 28-30 thousand fans. The lower level orange and blue sections on both sides seemed almost full. Frankly, I was surprised so many turned out for the game. Glad they showed up for the win to make big noise. The only negative was the failure of the “wave” this game. In the Arizona game the “wave” rocked the stadium. We fans gotta work on that.

    Game is going on now, SPCSP channel 1012 on Spectrum HD. Started at 6:45am.

  27. papajoe2 September 8, 2019 7:38 am

    Missed field goals. I dabbled for a while as a high school kicking coach and also coached soccer for over 20 years. I couldn’t see all of the kicks, but the one he shanked badly to the left (3rd one?), his plant foot was facing 10 o’clock to the left and he missed badly to the left. The one he made, his plant foot was about 11 o’clock. I like it when his plant foot points to his target, but that could be just the way he kicks. I suspect the others that he missed was also facing to the left. I also couldn’t see how far his plant foot was from the ball or if it was being or in front of the ball. These minor errors are very fixable. Hope he has a great, rest of the year!

  28. islandman September 8, 2019 8:44 am

    Run N Shoot only scored 10 pts in the 2nd half. We had a 1st and Goal at the 10 yd line early in the 4th period too but could not score a TD. Defense saved the game in the 2nd half.

  29. Kawika September 8, 2019 8:58 am

    Get plenty OSU grads here. Plenty local kids still attend there. Many eyes here on the island to pass on info to OSU coaches. It happens.

    Good win for the Warriors with regards to recruiting, too!

  30. Maddog50 September 8, 2019 9:17 am

    We will see if OSU suspends Lavaka. If they don’t the League should require something be done. He started what could have been a real bad situation. If Smith doesn’t do something he is spineless-

  31. winning September 8, 2019 9:18 am

    Kicker looked like a 20 handicapper trying to chip to a hole and duffs it 3 times to make a triple bogey instead of a par. LOT! (LACK OF TALENT). Just got to recruit better. McDunno again shows his weakness- PANIC! Still doesn’t have command of the O and his arm although he did run pretty good.

  32. oneseason September 8, 2019 9:18 am

    After the Arizona win, somebody asked on the BC radio show why the HS football games aren’t all moved to Friday to avoid conflict with UH games. The answer was that there were likely not enough referees / officials on the island to handle all the HS games on a Friday. If accurate, then maybe UH, boosters, and the stadium folks could look into growing the number of HS referees by boosting compensations. The new stadium is being pitched as a public / private partnership effort, and maybe this could be a good little project take on along the same vein.

  33. winning September 8, 2019 9:31 am

    Mariota would be better off to sign with another team like a NE. Every since Jeff Fisher, Tennessee has been on a spiral downward.

  34. winning September 8, 2019 9:41 am

    Byes can be detrimental. Some teams come out flat and get winded-such was the case for UH. Luckily, they came out of the fog in the second half. whew!

  35. Akamai Okole September 8, 2019 10:14 am

    Great Morning All!

    Dagnabit (dat means “shux” for those of you too young to know)… I wen forget to put in my prediction.

    And I woulda been so close! 😎

  36. H-Man September 8, 2019 10:33 am

    What happened with Gus Lavaka? I was at the game and knew there was something going on at the end, but didn’t see specifically what happened. Plus, I missed this morning’s re-telecast this morning.

  37. Kawika September 8, 2019 11:02 am

    OSU coach Jonathan Smith had some success at UW as their OC with 4-5 star players (many national recruits) and all their money and resources. Many times it doesn’t transfer when such assistants get their first head coaching job at a school that normally recruits mostly 2 and some 3 star players. Discipline is lacking at OSU as that was most evident against UH.

  38. Boolakanaka September 8, 2019 11:06 am

    Nah/ MM and the Titans destroyed the new darlings of the NFL, da Browns .,.,

  39. bg September 8, 2019 11:17 am

    Tired this morning after watching another epic Warrior game. So sweet! But I got my self-made prognosticator’s license suspended for being totally wrong on the game in so many ways. I thought UH was going to handle the Beaver running game. Wrong. At least one half wrong, anyway. The OSU running back was reading the zone blocking and making some beautiful cut-backs. And then, he had great balance and change of direction in the secondary. Kudos to the Warrior D for closing the cutback lanes more often in the 2nd half.

    I was so confident (overly as it turned out) that the UH offense was going to dominate the game. 31 points good for any normal MWC team, but we’re spoiled. LOL. Going forward, all my wanna-be prognostications are going to be put away under my rock where I live.

    Still looking forward to the UW game. I don’t care if the dawgs are upset over losing. Win or lose, I can count on the Warriors playing hard and not giving up. AND, like that proverbial box of chocolates, we never know what to expect except it’s probably going to be really exciting!

  40. Boolakanaka September 8, 2019 11:17 am

    Kawika spot on- same could be said bout Chow. For me, one of the most underrated coaches is Pete Carroll – champs in college and NFL is rare ….

  41. Kawika September 8, 2019 11:31 am

    The talk at OSU is that Jonathan Smith is in danger of losing the team with players running amok. That Beaver player who punched his own teammate did it right in front of Smith. Oregon Live press also mentioned Lavaka nearly causing a brawl at the end of the game.

    Regardless, Rolo needs to get some players from the 73 UH team to give a little talk to the team next week.

  42. Lopaka43 September 8, 2019 11:57 am

    Aloha, Tsaikos!
    So nice to see so many of you at the Cabana and at the game!
    Crowd was better than the Arizona game, and began to influence the game on those defensive stands with the noise in the South Endzone approaching jet engine levels several times in the second half. Hopefully folks will come out in greater numbers next time and add to the pandemonium.
    Much to be hopeful about because in both games we clearly had opportunities to score a lot more points than we did due to correctable issues. I see a team and coaching staff that is getting better each game and showing the potential to be one of the best we have ever had.
    Go Bows! Go Warriors!

    Sagarin: SOS(79).

    79? That’s not fair. Low-tier Power 5 school is still a Power 5 school.

    89. So 88 schools has a better pair of wins than Hawaii.

    Please. Almost had to go into the stands and put a fan in there to make them kicks successful.

  50. PONO September 9, 2019 1:46 am

    The sad thing about OSU is the culture this coaching staff is promoting. Hayes punches his own teammate right in front of the head coach and then they put him right back in the game. Lavaka cheap shots Solomon to start the action then when Solomon pushes him he unloads with punches and he’s a team captain. We have yet to see what if any suspension he will face but if he doesn’t get disciplined it will be telling about OSU’s coaches. Lamone Williams who is a Kahuku boy was gesturing to the fans in a negative way. OSU’s sideline is so chaotic and they have no control over their players. $1.9M for Jonathan Smith is way overpaying for what they are getting.

  51. Maddog50 September 9, 2019 3:01 am

    Pomo you got it right-this behavior did not just surface during this game. Lavaka for sure launched this incident then continued it. Any other team suspends him for this type of behavior. Congrats to our guys for showing some restraint and Solomon for backing off after he started throwing punches. This guy is a goon

  52. Maddog50 September 9, 2019 3:03 am

    Now time for the huskie dogs to get some “dog training”…Let’s go Warriors…focus , execute….we get em.

  54. burro sabio September 9, 2019 10:06 am

    Proves my point. Gotta threaten to look in the stands for someone cause they don’t make brown pants that fits chickens.

  55. Honu888 September 9, 2019 11:00 am

    Looks like Lavaka and Hayes will be suspended for first half only against Cal Poly for their altercations during the UH game.

  56. Inyoface September 9, 2019 12:23 pm

    I think a good field goal practice would be a single pole sticking straight up and have the kicker hit it or come close to it. Sounded weird but I think it would work.

  57. clyde September 9, 2019 12:43 pm

    Honu888: Thanks for the link, but let’s hope Lavaka doesn’t apologize to Sunia, cuz it was Matautia that he “subtly” cheap-shotted. I think OSU suspensions are fair and glad to see Smith try to take further control of his team. I would have meted further punishment on Hayes. I mean … punching your own teammate? Now, that’s really lacking discipline.
    OSU lost two linebackers in the game, one for the season. Well, they ain’t getting Tufaga back!
