Game day: Wyoming

LARAMIE — The beauty — and controversy — of baseball is no two stadiums are alike. And Laramie is what’s intriguing about college football. Like BYU and volleyball, football in Wyoming is different than other places because of the elements. High altitude? Yes, it really does matter, at least according to my own experience (two nose bleeds in two days). And because it’s sitting on top of the Rocky Mountains, when it’s windy, it’s really windy, and when it rains, it pours. And that perfect storm is set for tonight’s 8:15 kickoff.

But there are more concerns for the Warriors:

> Although the Warriors had a bye last week, they had to veer from the usual travel schedule, leaving a day earlier (redeye on Wednesday) and adjusting to the previously stated elements. The Cowboys played last week, but they also have not left the state since Sept. 3. Their last two games were at War Memorial Stadium.

> Quarterback Josh Allen has been uneven this season. But 1) the two losses were to Power-5 schools Iowa and Oregon, and 2) the things that make him a high-draft prospect — the strong arm, the stronger legs — are still part of his game. He is too good to remain so-so.

> The Cowboys have an aggressive defense, with eight takeaways — 5 fumble recovers, 3 picks — in three games. The two safeties are excellent. Andrew Wingard is the NCAA active career leader with 5.97 solo tackles per game.

The only irony is Aloha Stadium is worse than all other stadiums 😔 I cry.

  2. Chicken Grease September 23, 2017 8:16 am

Nose bleed? Are you sure you not in Westwor . . . oh, never mind.

  3. Mytake September 23, 2017 9:42 am

As I recall, D. Brown couldn’t pass in the rain. Given he hasn’t looked sharp this year when it was dry, get ready for another long , painful to watch game on national tv.

  4. Jack Flash September 23, 2017 11:02 am

Two of my favorite words- Game Day! Go Warriors!!!

  5. H-Man September 23, 2017 11:10 am

If it rains and Dru struggles, maybe we’ll see Cole McDonald.

  6. madeinhawaii September 23, 2017 1:29 pm

If it rains, both sides could end up struggling with their passing game as Wyoming receivers haven’t shined as of yet and getting enough separation in the rain to secure a wet ball is a little harder to do. So, it might come down to who has the better running game.

  7. burro sabio September 23, 2017 1:33 pm

    It’s pouring in Colorado Springs.

I’ve been called many things but not a robot.

  8. islandman September 23, 2017 1:41 pm

Tsai states reality in today’s paper – Wyoming has the edge on offense and defense, with special teams edge to UH.

  9. Stephen Tsai September 23, 2017 2:37 pm

Yep, I brought back Solomon Elimimian for today’s game.
    My bad.
This is what happens when you try to type in a lineup while tending to a nose bleed.

SA Breaking News: Defensive linemen Moala, Tevarua and Akoteu are suspended from today’s game for breaking team rules.

  12. HawaiiMongoose September 23, 2017 3:49 pm

That’s extremely disappointing news. As thin as we are on the d-line, and these guys go do something stupid and get themselves suspended. They’ve let their teammates down BIG time.

  13. clyde September 23, 2017 4:03 pm

This begs the question: when did the indiscretions occur? If they happened before the team left Hawaii, then contingencies were in place. If they occurred in the past couple of days, the team will be short three players on an already depleted travel roster. Either way, poor timing heading into conference play.

I guess it explains why Choi was penciled in as the starting NT.

  14. Willie September 23, 2017 4:18 pm

To be politically correct, all I have to say is what a bunch of three Lolos to get suspended for the MWC opener!

  15. Chicken Grease September 23, 2017 4:28 pm

Let’s not yet pass judgment on a 3 Warriors. There will be a Leahy/Coach Rolo show tomorrow and ESPN 1420 am Call the Coach show on Tuesday.

Most of you are all too willing to chant “oh rain, good blessings.” So, it’s raining in Laramie, right? So stick to your cowboy/paniolo guns, so to speak.

Support a Warriors until the truth comes out!!!!!

  16. oneseason September 23, 2017 4:38 pm

Hawaii – Wyoming showing on ESPNEWS sportscenter (225/1225 on cable) until Syracuse – LSU finishes up.

  17. Mytake September 23, 2017 5:05 pm

    D Brown is underwhelming

  18. H-Man September 23, 2017 5:29 pm

Look who was leading the blocking on the TD – #60 Chris Posa. Go Warriors !!!

  19. clyde September 23, 2017 5:32 pm

And #90, who’s been in on short-yard blocking. Couldn’t figure out who it was. It’s Matt Norman; not sure why he’s not wearing his usual #72.

  20. azwarrior22 September 23, 2017 5:51 pm

Too many penalties. Need to clean up in the second half.

  21. 808bowler September 23, 2017 5:53 pm

    Can we stop making penalties?

  22. oneseason September 23, 2017 6:21 pm

Offense seems to be clicking nicely.

  23. clyde September 23, 2017 6:29 pm

First-and-goal at the 7, and they go empty backfield? Hmmm.

  24. clyde September 23, 2017 6:58 pm

As the saying goes, the only numbers that count are on the scoreboard: Total yards (UH 321, Wyoming 122). First downs (UH 18, Wyoming 5). Time of possession: (UH 30:47). Wyoming 14:13). Score 14-14. Arrgh ….

  25. HawaiiMongoose September 23, 2017 6:59 pm

We’ve been our own worst enemy so far in this game.

  26. H-Man September 23, 2017 7:04 pm

Penalties, penalties, penalties………No fun. I think I rather watch Wahine Volleyball.

  27. cappie the dog September 23, 2017 7:35 pm

    It’s hero time, Meskell.

    You can do it.

  28. 808bowler September 23, 2017 7:42 pm

    What was that play call?

  29. Mytake September 23, 2017 7:42 pm

WTF haven’t we done the McDonald keeper a little too much?!??!?!m

  30. Chicken Grease September 23, 2017 7:53 pm

I am SO calling the coach on Tuesdwy!!!!

  31. inyoface September 23, 2017 7:58 pm

    We junk lol

  32. azwarrior22 September 23, 2017 7:58 pm

The story of the game…penalties and bad special teams.

  33. NorthShoreFan September 23, 2017 7:59 pm

Lot more questions for the team.

Confused why we call a timeout when they ready to punt at 44 sec., have them punt, then run the clock out so we can play over time?

  34. NorthShoreFan September 23, 2017 8:01 pm

Anyhoo, don’t need answers to my question. The answer/s won’t change anything.
Boyz played hard but let a win slip through. Special teams?….need some work.

  35. Chicken Grease September 23, 2017 8:03 pm

    What.

    In.

    Hell!??

  36. HawaiiMongoose September 23, 2017 8:17 pm

We gave the game away. Suspensions. Penalties. Incomprehensible coaching decisions. Plenty of blame to go around.

  37. oneseason September 23, 2017 8:18 pm

#33 … my guess is the timeout was called to ensure that UH had time to prepare for a fake punt. Wyoming had previously gone no huddle on 4th down and converted. I think that would have been a good time to call a timeout also, but the snap came really fast as I recall.

  38. NorthShoreFan September 23, 2017 8:30 pm

#37….I get that…with game clock winding down..one would expect the unexpected so prep for a fake punt should have been expected…just my imho…
Heal up get ready for the next one…what disappoints is this was a win…but shoot ourselves in the foot again. Wyo is not that good…but better than we were tonight.

  39. oneseason September 23, 2017 8:31 pm

With the exception of a few impressive short offensive spurts by Wyoming, I had the feeling that UH largely controlled the flow of the game. The offense was diverse and largely effective. UH had 450 yards of total offense vs. 269 yards for Wyoming. There were some bad breaks, and a few defensive breakdowns, but this team dominated Wyoming at 7000 ft or so for most of the game.

  40. NorthShoreFan September 23, 2017 8:32 pm

Some really good individual performances…need the whole team to step up. Take the run back away and we win.

  41. clyde September 23, 2017 8:35 pm

Tough loss, and the team played hard under difficult conditions (on the road in elevation without three suspended players). I hope Dejon Allen is OK.

    Which call was worse:

    1. 1st and goal at the Wyoming 7 with the score 7-7 in the third quarter and they empty the backfield and Brown throws a pick.

    2. Third and 7 at the Hawaii 44 with the score 21-21 late in the fourth quarter, and they sub out Brown for McDonald, who keeps (for the fourth time in the game) and runs for 2 yards. Admittedly, I thought they were setting up Wyoming; unfortunately, that was not the case.

  42. Duster September 23, 2017 8:49 pm

Snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

  43. Chicken Grease September 23, 2017 8:50 pm

Bet you Rolo mishandled those suspensions.

What, coach? Did they hide snacks? They’re ATHLETES! They need to eat.

    Damn stupid coaches!!!!!!

  44. Old Diver September 23, 2017 9:02 pm

Two things were responsible for the loss in overtime. Diocemy Saint Juste leaving the game and two outstanding defensive plays during the same play for Wyoming. On to next week.

  45. Derek September 23, 2017 9:13 pm

Tough deal when you lose the game on a tipped ball. But, to me, the killer was the kickoff turn by Wyoming for a touchdown after we scored. Up to that point Hawaii was in control. A very, very tough loss to swallow.

  46. Duster September 23, 2017 9:20 pm

Was that int in OT a clean pick? I assume it was, but wanted to see replays just to be sure. However, the refs were eager to leave and ESPN2 moved on to other programming.

  47. Duster September 23, 2017 9:45 pm

Does Craig Bohl sit on a MWC committee re. officials/officiating? I recall one of the ESPN2 announcers mentioning something like that.

  48. Coach DB September 23, 2017 9:52 pm

Red Zone Scoring & Turnovers will determine most games, and that was the case tonight!

  49. Duster September 23, 2017 10:24 pm

Old Diver informed me that it was a clean pick by a Wyoming DB with a cast. I still wish I saw replays. The Warriors let Wyoming hang around, and they made the key plays in the end while the Warriors did not.

  50. ai-eee-soos September 24, 2017 1:26 am

I think the ball was tipped by a LEAPING linebacker.

    INT – ball game.

  51. ai-eee-soos September 24, 2017 1:41 am

Special teams – really need team speed.

2nd guessing as usual – offense play calling – no mo continuity.

2nd guessing as usual – empty set with Brown in – pass.

but what the hell do I know – I’m just a FANatic.

… a FANatic with an empty feeling.

  52. tom September 24, 2017 6:48 am

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!

    (despite the loss in Wyoming!)

Ai-eee-soos #51 is correct – the ball was tipped by a leaping Wyoming player which lead to the INT.

  53. Akamai Okole September 24, 2017 7:29 am

    The sun is out…

    56 – 14 Akamai Okole

    Das it

  54. burro sabio September 24, 2017 8:01 am

Mr. Tsai, were the suspended players left home as Mr. Reardon wrote? If so why was this not reported this earlier? It should seem fairly apparent that Viane Moala was not on the trip.

  55. Duster September 24, 2017 9:25 am

Yes. The sun came up. Still feel sick from the game.

  56. A-House September 24, 2017 9:45 am

during or after spring practice i do recall the coaching staff mentioning that they spent much time to instill DISCIPLINE!!

after 4 games, still seeing all the penalties — if I recall correctly, #50 has had at least one penalty or more in each game — and, he is considered by some, as the best OL? me thinks Posa has done a better job! — perhaps, it’s not the penalty, but when it occurred.

to my surprise, UH, overall, played a great game facing the elevation and cold — well done, warriors!!!

  57. Duster September 24, 2017 9:57 am

    Source of frustration:

Total offensive yards: UH 450, UW 269

Total offensive plays: UH 78, UW 48

Time of Possession: UH 39:05, UW 20:55

    But:

    Penalties: UH 10-96, UW 4-51

    Turnovers: UH 2, UW 0

Kickoff returns: UH 3-55-0, UW 4-161-1TD

Punt Returns: UH 0-0-0, UW 3-58-0

  58. Maddog50 September 24, 2017 10:00 am

Simply put the better team this past Saturday was the Warriors. They outplayed them in almost every category. Not one single thing led to this loss but a collection of situations contributed to the outcome. One thing for sure anybody watching this game at the conference level has to say your in for a game when you play these guys. In time many of the issues will be overcome, so you can look forward to every single game being competitive-that has not been the case for some time. I hate losing but I have to celebrate the effort and the good that came from yesterday. We are not where we want to be but you can see the fight and effort every game to get there. Proud of the staff and the team, totally understand the gut wrenching disappointment that comes from a loss like that. Let Wyoming celebrate……..they know the truth if their honest with themselves-GoWarriors!!!!

  59. Ipu Man September 24, 2017 10:07 am

    A-House…you win?
    Your prediction:
    UH 24 WYO 28

    Score was
    UH 21 WYO 28

So if you would be so kind as to post next game postings?
    🙂

  61. AllG September 24, 2017 12:38 pm

Horrible play calling down the stretch did us in for sure. The tip in OT was just a unfortunate and great play by the D. This loss is on the coaches

  62. AllG September 24, 2017 12:39 pm

I think it’s time for Rolo to take over the play calling. Play calling has be way to conservative with little creativity.

  63. Warrior Dave September 24, 2017 12:59 pm

Amen AIIG!! People forget that OC Brian Smith and Craig Stutz wanted to call plays without going through Rolo. It’s not working so Rolo should play call.

  64. islandman September 24, 2017 1:12 pm

I this game, UH had many pass plays on 1st downs, i think and Rolo is the guy who said he wants a ground game. He has the chance to veto any calls or game plans.

  65. NotNasti September 24, 2017 1:47 pm

Tired of rehashing the loss. Take a look at highlights from Hamilton Tiger-Cats vs. BC Lions. Alex Green, with one week of practice, was a beast! https://www.cfl.ca/games/2425/hamilton-tiger-cats-vs-bc-lions/

  66. roygbivs September 24, 2017 2:40 pm

Coaches coach. Players play. Better players, better the coach? C’mon, too many penalties again, miss assignments, missed turnovers, breaking team rules…..

Players win ballgame so we need better, smart players.
    Play smarter, not harder.

    E’nuff.

    Next. Beat da ‘Rams!!!!
    Protect da Hale

  67. NorthShoreFan September 24, 2017 2:44 pm

Every play works if you execute your responsibilities….the other team tries to make sure it doesn’t.
Time to get ready for CSt.
    IMUA WARRIORS!

  68. NorthShoreFan September 24, 2017 2:46 pm

#64…watched most of the game…Green is lighting it up…Masoli looking good. JJ got the team moving the ball.
Announcer had lots of things to say about Green…all positive.

  69. NotNasti September 24, 2017 3:11 pm

    Think positive!

  70. Maddog50 September 24, 2017 3:50 pm

You can see entire game replay on you tube from ESPN. I was at the game and have watched the tape once. Lots of contributing factors but Hawaii was definitely the better team. About 3 good runs totally accounted for WYO offense period. Every unit has things to address. I totally understand why certain things are called and the end result is not always desired outcome-that’s football

  71. inyoface September 24, 2017 3:59 pm

Maybe this blog should be called: Warrior Beat Themselves

  72. palolo2_LA September 24, 2017 4:12 pm

Here are a few remaining issues that will continue to hinder UH’s progress:
    1) Penalties – especially by upperclassmen (the transfer from Alabama and D Allen need to get their attitudes in check)
    2) Split play calling – having a running and passing play caller makes little sense. There is clearly a drive to equally distribute calls and that has caused issues. Whoever called from the backup QB to run an option play on 3rd and 7 needs to find a new position. My mother (65 yrs old) said “why they going run the option now and that’s exactly what they did. If moms knows its coming, that D does too. It is even worse bc Dru was heating up and MCD is coming on cold from the bench. Shows little game awareness in our play-calling and reminds me of the double bone head move UH made by going for it on 4th and 25+ against UCLA.
    3) Bad tackling – the lack of containment on D is obvious and there were tons of missed tackles again. That kick return play was a good example – at least 3 players came fast towards the runner and one ran pass him, but if any of the 3 broke down, contained the TD wouldn’t happen. Too much diving, lunging and bad tackling fundamentals.
    4) Lack of WR route options – the WRs run routes without variation and with little top end speed are never open, the opposite of the run-n-shoot. The WRs also run very short routes ala Chowball.

  73. cappie the dog September 24, 2017 5:12 pm

    64.

    Thanks.

When Green was with the Packers, it seemed as if every run was for one or two yards.

I remember a Packers fan online explaining to me that his greatest value was as a pass protector.

  74. cappie the dog September 24, 2017 5:15 pm

At least every loss is not a foregone conclusion.

  75. cappie the dog September 24, 2017 5:17 pm

    Show the Colts.

There is no Rigoberto Sanchez highlight package on YouTube.

  76. seewhy September 24, 2017 5:25 pm

Looks like Aloha Stadium is going to be empty this weekend.

  77. A View From Afar September 24, 2017 5:31 pm

Looks like A-House had the winning (closest) prediction; only missed by 3 points.
So A-House, you have the honor of compiling the predictions for the next game.
