Fresno State announces starting QB for Hawaii football opener

During this morning’s Zoom session with reporters, Fresno State head coach Kalen DeBoer announced that Jake Haener would start at quarterback against Hawaii in Saturday’s season opener at Bulldog Stadium.

Haener beat out Ben Wooldridge, who threw six passes in 2019.

Haener is a junior who redshirted in 2019 after transferring from Washington. In a limited role in 2018, Haener completed 69% of his passes for 107 yards and a touchdown. Haener was most effective in the fourth quarter, during which he was 9-for-11 for a QB rating of 193.53.

Saturday’s game, in a stadium without fans, will mark DeBoer’s debut as the Bulldogs’ head coach.

Any word on the refunding of the football payment ?

  21. SteveM October 20, 2020 12:34 pm

I am hoping Spectrum might consider lowering the PPV pricing if not many people pay $69.99 for the game this week. While I think $70 was the regular price in previous years (I dunno since I was a season ticket holder and went to a sports bar for away games–both impossible this year), the fact that the bars and restaurants that subscribed to PPV had to pay for EACH TV in their establishments… that was a lot of bars and TV sets.

Spectrum must overcome that loss so they are probably seeing if they can make it up individually. So unless I break COVID-19 restrictions and have a TV party to split costs (not recommended), I’m going to have to listen on radio. ๐Ÿ™

Got it on 247sports, Hawaii releases depth chart. Many surprises, especially on defense.

Good to see you back in action. I hope your colleagues return soon too. I guess the Governor put your blog on the “Tier 2” list.

This defense looks totally different from Batoon’s. And totally, totally different from Legi’s. I cant imagine how it will function. We’ll see (or maybe just hear for now) Saturday.

  31. sackkabooya October 21, 2020 1:08 am

Batoon’s scheme put DE’s in space as LB’s. VSC’s defense seems to use the opposite approach. I hope Batoon’s hybrid DE/DT guys can adjust and fit this scheme sometime. Kahahawai-Welch, Ritner, Blocker, Thomas and even Evaimalo. None of them on the two deep.

People living on the continental US can view the game for FREE at TEAM1SPORTS. Just have to download the app on your mobile or tablet device. Guess UH is not going with Stadium this year.

    RE: #30 sackkabooya

The front seven looks fast on paper. Hopefully we can get to the QB this season and give our DBs some relief for once. I think our biggest test with this new defense will be when we play a physical run team.

  40. burro sabio October 22, 2020 9:42 am

    Welcome back Mr Tsai.
The 2-deep has some surprises, and surprising omissions.

  41. phil the handy dog October 22, 2020 4:40 pm

    go hawaii. beat fresno.

  42. WarriorMojo October 22, 2020 5:01 pm

    Yo, ST, welcome back!

I’m a bit disappointed to see that Lincoln and Melquise are sharing the same position as both are rare talents. I think LVic proves my George Ornellas prediction from last year and I’m really pulling for Melquise to have a great comeback season.

Hope Cameron Lockridge can do what Cortez Davis did last year.

Hope Kohl can shut me up. I’d be so happy.

Really want to see Quin Bright and Dae Dae Hunter get some touches as well.
