Carper commits — UH to be huge

How does this sound? 7-0, 6-11, 6-11, 6-10, 6-9, 6-7.

That’s Hawaii’s projected frontcourt size for the 2018-19 season after Rampart High (Colorado Springs, Colo.) 7-foot, 240-pound center Dawson Carper told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser on Thursday that he’s committed to the Rainbow Warriors.

“Yessir, I’m coming to Hawaii,” Carper said in a phone interview. He took an official visit to UH in early September.

The Carper news comes right behind that of 6-11 Australian Owen Hulland, who in turn followed his Australia Centre of Excellence teammate Mate Colina (6-11, corrected from 6-10) to Manoa. All three can sign during the upcoming early signing period (Nov. 8 to 15), with Carper and Hulland counting for 2018-19 and Colina for 2017-18 after the semester break.

“I love that,” Carper said.

“I’m a strong inside presence, set good screens,” he said. “I like the offense Hawaii runs. I’m gonna be involved in that. I feel that we’re going to be pretty big now with all the height we’re getting. Hopefully I’ll help inside well.”

To say Carper was a little excited about it probably doesn’t do it justice.

According to MaxPreps, in 25 games as a junior, Carper averaged 15.9 points, 7.8 rebounds and 1.4 blocked shots while shooting 63 percent from the field.

He’s expected to be a featured player at Rampart his senior season. He’s a true 5 man with some ability to step out and shoot.

UH got on Carper early, according to Rampart coach J’on St. Clair. It was good that it did; there was some considerable competition for him.

“I was all over the place with visits,” Carper said in a message. “Checked out the East Coast — George Washington, to the West Coast — Saint Mary’s. I considered Air Force and Milwaukee and Wichita St. But I knew Hawaii was it.”

The others projected in the UH frontcourt for 2018-19 are Ido Flaisher (6-10, junior), Jack Purchase (6-9, senior), and Zigmars Raimo (6-7, junior).

Here’s a highlight reel of Carper as a junior:

Awesome! Hulland and Carper with Colina. Warriors are getting BIG. Look out Big West!

Believe all the concerns about U of H signing a “BiG,” has been answered not with one but with 3 bigs. Also believe it partially answers the question on whether Coach is able to recruit. All 3 bigs are space eaters. Think Hulland and Carper look the most mobile right now and Colina has a huge up side and head start by coming in during the Spring Semester.

B-ball is on the RISE. -go bows

Big men are fine, but in college and in the pros good teams and winning teams all have at least 3 good guards and small forwards who can shoot the 3. Ball handling, ball security, free throw shooting, quickness, on ball defense, 3 point shooting penetration are all the hallmarks of good guard play. They control the game. And not to mention the leadership and the floor general, especially the point guard. So the question is, do we have good guards this year and the next couple of years. If not, we better get some. Otherwise, we are not going far.

Having good big men are important not matter what some say. Just because GS Warrior can get by without good big men doesn’t mean UH have to follow that formula. Some teams will cause problems with their speed and outside shooting while other can do the same with defense, size and good fundamental team play.

A good example would be San Antonio. They don’t shoots lights out like some team but win with team work and hard nose play. I think UH will be more like a San Antonio instead of a run and Gun Golden State or LA Clippers.

If we can’t get the big shot guards and wings, then the next best things is to get the big time bigs.

BTW….St. Mary is also build like this….with plenty of size so Ganot should be happy about the makeup of this team.

First a lot of the posters complain about having to many small players so now that we can get the big’s people are questioning if we have quality smalls. Probably next recruiting cycle we’ll bring quality guards then we can complain of not recruiting big’s.

IMHO: Regarding the guards and forwards, the team is looking good. They are young with talent. Expect big things from Buggs and Green. Expect lots of surprises from the new recruits, all smalls. Expect steady play from the other returning players, especially from the returning bigs. This is one of those years full of optimism for the program. The recruitment of the bigs for 2018 were the final pieces of the puzzle.

I absolutely agree with Tako and amela. Coach is proving to be a capable recruiter. The target had to be getting some size but talented size. The next recruiting cycle I believe Coach will target point guards and forwards. What I saw last year proved that Coach can coach considering he had a redo over team. I expect this team will have a successful season going into next season when all the new recruits arrive next year in July. I’m excited with the direction of the program.

Can’t coach height, that’s for sure…. HUGE gets for us, helps us match up better with Irvine, Davis, Poly

Wings gotta develop over this year and next season should be a payoff year

Seems like to compete in the Big West these days you have to go big … Irvine was successful w/ that … agree w/ “roygbivs” … hopefully the recruiting class after this one will feature some -1-2-3’s that are smacking their chops to play w/ these big guys … great start thus far Coach Ganot … GO ‘BOWS

Just a reminder that we have a guard commitment for 2019 who will be returning from his church mission.

5star guard retracts commitment to Arizona because one of their coaches is under FBI investigation.
What’s that called?, getting caught with fingers in the “cookie jar.”
