Martin-Monkhouse earn another Pairs of Week award

Why weren’t Ka’iwe and Mags nominated? I thought for sure they would be nominated. I thought they deserved the recognition this time around to be back to back honorees as well.

TVW and Miric were the only other two nominated. I guess it could have gone either way. Both pairs obviously deserving but did Ka’iwe and Mags not tie the school record as well for 14 straight wins? They have almost the same overall record (Ka’iwe and Mags, one better actually because Luyties played one match with Martin). I would like to see Ka’iwe, in particular, get honored for her work this year. She is so (quietly) deserving of the recognition.

Congrats to Gasman. He is a beast!

  6. Warriorfan April 2, 2018 8:38 pm

Beach team had the most successful road trip in UH history in any sport. Two titles, one on the East Coast and on the West Coast. 10 and 0 in matches. Wow congratulations.

  8. Bleachercoach April 3, 2018 1:11 pm

    7. Absolutely! Also, Coach Jeff tweaked his flights moving Flt#1 to. Flt#3, Flt # 3 to Flt#2 , and Flt#2 to Flt1 on the East/B.West Coast Challenge and it has proven to be the right combo. Now, the pieces are set and I feel IMO the SandBows will be back in Alabama on the 1st week of May.
    6. Hawaii, Cal Poly among others are finding that there are many great Canadian Beach Players …Tiamiric (Cal Poly) and our Monkhouse(Hawaii) are 2 great ones. Yes, go for it Coach Jeff bring them all here.

  11. roygbivs April 4, 2018 3:35 am

Aww shucks on Lexi Sun, wishful thinking she may land over here.
Thought she mayb thinking like “Big fish, small pond” if she thought bout coming here. Guess she likes the COLD…
    will unfortunately unfollow her now

RAMS- no news yet!?! This is getting a little disheartening …..

  12. roygbivs April 4, 2018 3:41 am

    Damn, beach’Bows have it Roooooollllling!!!

Jeff Hall mayb hired in the wrong position? Doing a great job recruiting for the Beach team, could have a title come real soon.

  13. Warriorfan April 4, 2018 4:47 am

It’s easier to recruit for the beach team they are one of the only five power teams there no stanford to worry about yet, or psu’s nebraska, minnesots, florida and wisconsin who are recruiting juggernauts but yes Hall is doing good on the beach side , I love that he is embracing Canadians too bad he lost out on Tia Miric to Cal Poly though.

Still hopeful coach Ronyn can land Scoles and Gaskins.

  14. Warriorfan April 4, 2018 4:48 am

    Coach Robyn*^
Also no texas to compete against in beach volleyball.

I’m actually excited and intrigued that we do not have a spring match scheduled. Do people realize who we have coming back? EVERYONE (expected to be) returning needs TONS of more reps at their respective positions for us to be successful this coming season. Our 2018 season is not going to be defined by playing any spring match, it is going to be defined by how much work and DETAIL that is put into the practice gym during spring. Even our “best”, and I use that term extremely loosely, players are not where they need to be in order for us to even now be Big West champs.

Our setters have expressed how much of a privilege it is to play under an Olympian and a master of their craft. Now it is time to put their money where their mouth is. Both setters have aspirations to play at the next level, so it will be awesome to see their growth under a coach who is not afraid to tell them, “NO. I want it done this way. You need to work harder.” Too many prep/club kids skate on by either by YES-coaches or by family-coaches that their relative can do no wrong. Not to say, that this is either setter’s particular case, as I am familiar with their family base and do know that they are held to a high standard. It is more of a generalization of this generation of athlete.

Our outsides will benefit from tons and tons of reps of serve and pass. Baxter did wonders with Hartong, helping her transition from middle to a 6-ro passing OH. They need to find a way to get Lee out of a non-coaching role, as I believe she is a DOVO with non-coaching limitations. She was one, if not, the best juniors training coaches Hawaii had before she left to coach at the collegiates. Sure, playing in actual matches may help improving untimely serving errors during pressure moments that our OHs were prone to, but that can be simulated in a practice gym to a lesser extent. Either way, it would really help our pin trio and our work-in-progress middles to have an improved first touch. That will help keep opponent’s defenses a little more honest.

Also excited to see how transfer, Akiu, does at libero. IIRC, this young women stopped hitting at a younger age to focus on playing libero at the next level. If you watched her play during club/high school, you would know that her ball control is impeccable. Diving and diming digs came natural to her. Maybe playing under the big spotlight in the spring could have better prepared her for this coming season, maybe not. Either way, I feel like it could be an extremely short transition phase for Akiu and from there she will take off sprinting and Hawaii fans will be extremely impressed.

Like some previous poster may have mentioned, I am also not concerned that we aren’t getting flooded with player commitment announcements. Dave Shoji was in a tough predicament not being able to give any recruits any certainty, but I am glad Ah Mow-Santos isn’t handing out candy to every Tina, Dick, and Harrietta who has aspirations to play for a school where they realistically do not match. Crush those big dreams. Scour the continent for those diamonds. She is doing a service to the state, the program, her former teammates, and athletes that came before and after her, as well as herself, to find young women that will best exemplify a Rainbow Wahine.

One thing as a lifetime fan of the program, it would be great if our program could secure some legacy talent, as we haven’t had much success in that department. However, if I am a former Rainbow Wahine, which I will not confirm or deny that I am not, I am definitely looking back at UH and putting a bigger bug in my darling daughter’s ear about playing for Ah Mow-Santos and the UH Wahine VB program. If we cannot, then we are definitely putting ourselves in position to have some fine young female athletes that will be just fine carrying on a proud tradition.

  16. H-Man April 4, 2018 6:37 am

Was hoping to see one or two international players joining the Wahine. Thought assistant coach Angelica Ljungqvist might have success recruiting Europe. Where would the water polo team be without the players from abroad? Men’s basketball definitely has an international flavor. Has Robyn recruited a setter to follow Norene Iosia? Just thoughts.

  17. Ron April 4, 2018 9:47 am

H-man, she has verbal commitment from a girl from Texas who is a setter. Texas is almost a foreign country killing two birds with one stone.

  18. Crazy4WVB April 4, 2018 11:32 am

Any commitment from a foreign player will take a lot longer to process with the new administration rules so just have to be patient. In fact any incoming 2018 player is a gift and won’t be announced until official notice from UH. Probably late April at best.

  19. uhfan April 4, 2018 2:48 pm

They’ve had a year to recruit. If they can’t get at least one foreign recruit or hell just a OH that’s a terminator you might as well write off this season as well.

  20. Hot April 4, 2018 8:08 pm

There’s always something to look forward to each season. Granato has been improving every season and her senior year could be her best yet. Castillo got to spend the majority of 2017 as an OH, and one can only hope that concentrating on one position leads to her tremendous progress. Sibley will be a junior, and I hope she gets an opportunity to contribute.

I’m excited about Burns. She had a really promising second half of the 2017 season. Both Williams and Howling have the potential to be very good.

The Libero situation should be interesting. Akiu comes in as an experienced college player and will lead Gong and Okino, among others as I’m sure there’ll be walk-on DS coming aboard. Looking forward to see how McKenna Ross has progressed, both as a hitter and defender.

Lastly, it’s always exciting to see how the newcomers fit in.

  21. Rabbit ears April 4, 2018 8:42 pm

    We some new weapons fast.

  22. Rabbit ears April 4, 2018 8:44 pm

    Typo
We need some new weapons fast.

  23. H-Man April 4, 2018 10:12 pm

    Ron, thanks for the heads-up.

  24. Kahuna April 5, 2018 7:44 am

Akiu is not just an experienced libero, she was 2nd team All BIG 12 for one year. You know the BiG 12 have some power teams so Reyn is no slouch. She was also part of the 2017 Collegiate along with McKenna Granato. IMHO, Akiu WILL start.

She will bring maturity, leadership and experience to the team. Okino and Gong will have to wait their turn. Both will probably be serving specialists.

  25. Rabbit ears April 5, 2018 2:40 pm

We need a couple of 6-2 six rotations bombers. Two Emily Hartong clones will do.

  26. H-Man April 5, 2018 11:33 pm

Tracked it down. Kate Lang is the setter from Texas. https://volleymob.com/hawaii-garners-commitment-from-class-of-2020-setter-kate-lang/

But she is a commit for 2020. Without another commit, she will be the only setter in 2020, and a freshman at that.

  27. Cindy Luis April 6, 2018 3:32 pm

not understanding the negativity here. Already writing off the season just because there hasn’t been an announced recruit from Europe? and saying Hall is in the wrong position? Hall is exactly where he wanted to be, head beach coach.
People seemingly are forgetting he was on hat beach side as part time head coach and has had several years of recruiting to build this team.
As someone mentioned, it does take Euros longer to get into school and through NCAA clearing house.
Considering that many players have committed as sophomores, Ah Mow-Santos’ staff still playing catch-up
anyway new thread up for Friday’s match UH at UCSB
