Oregon State accused of recruiting UH players

Oh, dam.

Oregon State staffers have been busy Beavers, sending out recruiting material, including invitations to the spring game, to prospects.

But, oops, the material allegedly was sent to UH players at a Manoa campus address, according to a tweet from UH coach Nick Rolovich. It is against NCAA rules for a school to contact a player who has signed a national letter of intent with another school.

The players’ names were redacted in Rolovich’s tweet.

Rolovich tweeted: “My apologies for our players not being able to attend your Spring game. Ours was the same day, bad timing. Quick question, the 203 years of coaching, none of you realized you couldn’t actively recruit another school’s players? Sent to campus? #leakydam #sloppybeavers.”

    Interesting

Report them to the NCAA. Their dirty tactics should not go unpunished.

  3. seewhy May 4, 2018 8:23 am

Please punish them! Probably nothing will happen though… They are “protected” as a Power 5 school. Meanwhile, UH gets f’ed by the NCAA left and right every time.

  4. haka May 4, 2018 8:31 am

Well, don’t hold your breath for any action against OSU. Now, on the other hand, if it was UH, then DAM! take their freaking scholarships away and put them natives on probation!

    Beaver compliance…
Uh, it was an accident. We beaver poachers have more class than that…really…usually we don’t get caught. Anyway, sorry. Oh and by the way, can you give us the students real home address so we don’t have to send it to campus next time. Mayhaylo and Aloa.

  5. H-Man May 4, 2018 8:33 am

Waiting to hear if this was brought to the NCAA’s attention.

  6. haka May 4, 2018 8:45 am

This is worthy of every beaver joke ever aimed at them! Spare no beaver!

  7. Inyoface May 4, 2018 8:52 am

Oregon State should move to the mountain west.

  8. Stephen Tsai May 4, 2018 8:57 am

The real shame is Oregon State is a Pac-12 school with Pac-12 facilities and Pac-12 television money.
Why in the heck are the Beavers poaching players and coaches from a little ol’ Mountain West school in the middle of the Pacific?
If I’m the boss, I would be like: Get out and recruit against USC, Stanford and UCLA!

  9. clyde May 4, 2018 9:04 am

This is such a brazen, blatant attempt at skirting the rules that my first thought was that they (maybe Legi, Kefense?) were punking Rolo. But if those packets were really addressed to players then someone at OSU really messed up. We’ll see how OSU responds. I’d like to hear what Rolo has to say beyond his tweet.

#5H-Man: In his tweet, Rolo tagged the NCAA, along with compliance at Pac-12 and OSU.

  10. Stephen Tsai May 4, 2018 9:33 am

This is a cool brushback pitch.
From now on, OSU is on the defensive.
Simple advise: Eat the cookie. Don’t get caught with your hand in the jar.

  11. suckkabooya May 4, 2018 9:42 am

Pretty low character operation at Oregon State if their intent was to overtly poach. Lazy. They cant be serious. Getting desperate over there. Embarrassing.

How long and how many others?

Hmmm…something keeps gnawing at me like a beaver on a tree. Some insider information must have come from somebodies….hmmm…who could they be? Wait for it………timmmmmmber.

  15. z May 4, 2018 10:05 am

I guess this means we have some winners that others want. Nothing new. Is their coach related to John L? Would explain a lot.

  16. Da Punchbowl Kid May 4, 2018 10:27 am

Naughty, naughty Beavers! This is what happens when disgruntled former coaches don’t give a dam about what is right!

Dear NCAA – Please reign in these out of control Beavers!

  17. Derek May 4, 2018 10:50 am

As a member institution UH’s responsibility is to report any perceived irregularities to the NCAA and let them look into it if OSU committed any violations according to NCAA rules. It’s called due diligence.

I haven’t been making any comments lately, but this one smells so bad by Oregon State that I had to say something. Frankly, this p…ses me off. In the meantime, good luck to the 2018 Rainbow Warriors.

  18. PhatD May 4, 2018 12:09 pm

Now I’m wondering if a former Hawaii QB got confused and transferred to the wrong OSU by mistake. Oregon state football was probably like: Hey Hawaii QB come to OSU we have a scholarship waiting for you. We’re the team with the orange and black uniforms. Oops…maybe we should have told him we’re the beavers. Haha Lol

  19. Old Diver May 4, 2018 12:25 pm

Deliberate attempt to recruit UH players who are already enrolled and I assume have been here for at least one year? I’m not buying it. If UH does not release them they are required to sit at least two years after transferring. Sounds like Rolo is making a mountain out of a mistake for publicity reasons. Probably not a bad move on his part.

  20. Superstar Advertiser May 4, 2018 12:31 pm

#2 > Report them to the NCAA. Their dirty tactics should not go unpunished.

Then you should report them to someone else. Maybe the FBI, they seem to be policing college sports.

  21. clyde May 4, 2018 1:20 pm

Well, if anything, this should spur ticket sales for next year’s game against OSU. 🙄

  22. kama krab May 4, 2018 1:29 pm

    #17,

Well they already got one in Branden Kipper, so you know it’s happening. I just think this time they made a mistake that may cost them.

And with regards to transferring, they would only need to sit one year. Kipper would be able to play next year. If they transfer within the Mountain West, then it’s two years.

  23. kama krab May 4, 2018 1:31 pm

It could also be a prank but a pretty stupid one at that. Especially with a heighten state of the NCAA with all the non-sense in Basketball.

  24. kama krab May 4, 2018 1:32 pm

Well I guess you gotta stoop to that level when your a football program at the bottom of your conference and in the middle of nowhere.

  25. Maddog50 May 4, 2018 1:43 pm

If this is a simple mistake, it’s done by well simpletons. Someone has to prepare the data base then admins take over. Whatever the case or cause this is nothing short of if a huge embarrassment. I’m sure it must be reported to NCAA and fully explained.

  26. cappie the dog May 4, 2018 2:11 pm

Slow news day for college football.

It’s the lead story on the ESPN.com sidebar.

Posted for fifty minutes, still no comments.

  27. Luki May 4, 2018 2:36 pm

Well when your recruiters can’t recruit anybody to come to your school you go out and steal them from someone else. Lame! And from a PAC-12 school no less.

  28. H-Man May 4, 2018 3:43 pm

Got my answer. Re Gameback, “Rolovich tagged Oregon State compliance, Pac-12 compliance, the NCAA, and two media outlets in the tweet…” And from ESPN “Oregon State Athletics and head coach Jonathan Smith became aware of unintentional mailings directed at a University of Hawai’i student-athlete this morning,” the school said in its statement. “We are committed to following NCAA rules and are looking into this matter fully.”

  29. islandman May 4, 2018 4:06 pm

Why would OSU send the material to the UH Office of Registrar’s address ?

  30. haka May 4, 2018 4:06 pm

An interesting side note to this is that it looks like the postmark dates on the items of contention are stamped for the end of March. Just adding more fuel to the speculation fire.

    A beaver walks into a bar….

  31. shadow May 4, 2018 4:07 pm

If OSU is sincere about looking into the poaching, suggest they start by getting some answers from the 2 coaches who left Manoa to coach in Corvallis.

  32. LAN May 4, 2018 6:40 pm

OSU will always be the sister to OU…notice I said, Sister…cause they can never beat the big Brahdah. If they have to stoop so low and recruit our player’s….no class and they’re desperate…go get’um Rolo. Sounds like OSU, as in Ohio St. Urban Meyer, he was famous in trying to stealing player’s from other university’s.

  33. islandman May 4, 2018 9:46 pm

Trent Shelton rather than Trent Stevens in news article as of now, i think was the pitcher tonight ?

  34. ALLAN May 5, 2018 5:08 am

OSU WILL GET A PAT ON THE BACK FROM NCAA.

  35. Frankie May 5, 2018 7:25 am

Rolo, please don’t schedule them ever again!
