Going to market

It was amusing when the social leader of a fraternity mistook Nick Rolovich for being a marketing rep for UH.

Story: Rolovich, students work together

But since being named head coach in November 2015, Rolovich has done what marketing people are supposed to do: concoct slogans (“Pride Rock,” “Live aloha, play Warrior”), create a buzz (dropping off tickets with fans, asking police officers to distribute UH posters), and just connecting with fans. A year ago, I told Rolovich about a reader whose wife had passed following a long bout with cancer. Rolovich called the guy, expressing his heartfelt sympathy. It wasn’t for publicity. It was a just a guy making a nice gesture.

Rolovich has several ideas to promote the program. Asked if the large student turnout for Saturday’s game indicated UH football had returned, he said, “not until the stands are full.”

Stephen I too find that interesting. Can’t compliment Coach Rolovich for what he’s doing as far as engagement-

Oregon State revisited for UCLA game — big mistake!!!!!

UCLA with 3rd and long — UH decides to rush 3 DL w/ extra DBs — all game, Oregon controlled the Oline against 4 DL — if so, why rush only 3 when 4 could not get into the backfield to rush the passer or cause a sack of incomplete pass — thus, QB had all the time to find an open receiver for long yardage and kept numerous drives alive

thus, if above occurs, UH will lose badly — like 65 to 24.

  10. Whats up September 4, 2017 9:45 am

You can tell by Coach Rolo last press conference that Rolo knows he has a team that is on the verge of being a great team. Also, I think Rolo really wants a marquee win against the Power 5 team UCLA and he knows that the mental mistakes and unsportmanlike penalties are going to doom this team against Power 5 and MWC teams.

I don’t think this years Hawaii team knows it yet, but just by the eye ball test this 2017 Hawaii team has the size, speed and talent to compete with Power 5 teams and win the MWC West Division… maybe even win the MWC outright. The coaching staff has done a great job preparing the young men for UMASS and the uptempo WCU offense.

I have said it before but this Hawaii team is way better than what has been displayed against UMASS and WCU. This team needs to dig in to the Cerebral part of football and has to clean up the penalties, mental errors and not rely on just their physical superiority to win games.

UH No. 44 in scoring offense,39.5 pts per game; No. 77 in scoring defense , 26.5 pts per game.
No. 1 in blocked kicks, 3.
No. 115 out of 125 in fewest penalty yards per game, 96 Fresno St. had only 15 yards in penalty yards in its game.

I was able to watch parts of the 2 Warrior games and like what I see most of the time. The bonehead penalties need to be fixed. Always great to play with emotion and enthusiasm but needs to be controlled emotion and enthusiasm, at least until the last second is off the clock and you are celebrating the win! The players have got the skills to play the game just need to keep their heads in it. Looking forward to a great game against UCLA. Final score UH 35 UCLA 31

Go Warriors! Beat the Bruins! These two teams haven’t played since the 1930s.

I guess the student apathy on the Manoa campus was captured when some student group leaders (frats and sororities) had no idea who Nick Rolovich was when he came to speak to them. That’s rich and fitting.

Mr. Grease, I first learned about Steely Dan through a sample that De La Soul used on “Eye Know”. I think you’ll like how they used “Peg”. This was the last time that rappers could sample without being charged with copyright infringement. The Turtles sued De La Soul. They slowed down “You Showed Me” on “Transmitting Live From Mars” from the same album “Three Feet High and Rising”.

The last great unfettered sample-heavy album was the Beastie Boys’ “Paul’s Boutique”.

    “A Serbian Film”.

    Wow.

You may like the similarly internationally-banned “Man Bites Dog” and Pier Paolo Passolini’s “Salo or the 120 Days of Sodom”. Both available on Criterion, the latter on Blu-Ray.

Question for Coach Rolo, I think that the UH band should make changes to their fight song during games. They play the same songs every year since the Von Appen days. By making changes to their songs they would bring more fan enthusiasm.Just watching all the games on tv and hearing the bands play and then comparing them to our band makes me embarrassed.

  37. oldtimer808 September 4, 2017 4:11 pm

In my humble opinion from an old man who loves and honors UH Athletics UH will always come out the winner. Now if I was a betting man on other teams than yes my predictions would be on the prevailing information to make an intuitive decision. You will never see me favoring the other team over UH as for me it is not about how smart I am in predicting UH wins or losses. Go Rainbow Warriors!!!!

  38. oldtimer808 September 4, 2017 4:14 pm

By the way Rolo and his coaches are exactly what the doctor ordered for UH football. The school should pay him for marketing services.

  41. oneseason September 4, 2017 5:25 pm

Speaking of game day music, why would we want to associate the team with the St@r W@rs Empire music? The Empire are the bad guys, and their stuff gets blown up. I could see playing a bit of the theme when a power-5 team fumbles and then shooting off the cannon to signify their play blowing up on them.

  42. Inyoface September 4, 2017 5:50 pm

I always wondered why we never played UCLA during the June Jones era. I honestly think they didn’t want anything to do with a PAC 10 team losing to a smaller school. They finally gave us a shot when Norm Chow was coach and Mora came in. If any coach can beat UCLA it would be Rolovich.

  43. Casual observer September 4, 2017 5:51 pm

Vs. UCLA should be competitive but UH needs to play well in all three phases and the coaches got to make the correct calls. One concern is special teams where all three kickers look like JV compared to R. Sanchez. Guess he was that good. Ewalko is always a threat to go all the way; Sayles has speed but not proven. If UH can ball control and keep Rosen off the field, then we have a good chance. Even if UH D slows them down but doesn’t breakdown, we have a chance. D will need to get to Rosen fast because of his quick release. Bruins will probably establish the run first, wear down the D and then passing opens up. Sort of reminiscent of Warrior team on the verge of greatness that went to Alabama and played them close although losing.

Yeah. Probably gonna be like that until Coach Ah Mow realizes that 1/2 her job, essentially, is to hear from the fans as much as possible. She has to be able to weed out the disingenuous and nasty comments—even in those there might be coaching solutions. I wonder what the journalist in Ms. Luis sees it prudent to close comments. Then again, she might not be around to moderate as well.

To Mr. cappie, I’m not sure I’d what you call anywhere near a fan of Steely Dan, but they just MIGHT be the only pop act (excuse, they’d probably want to be classified as “jazz”; yeah, tell that to their top 40/popular tunes earnings) to reference college football with “Alabama The Crimson Tide” and, I suppose, the DePaul Demon Deacons and/or Duke University in their Deacon Blue track.

That and Tsaikos strike me as having Steely Dan in their playlists.

    Thank you

Did you know UH played UCLA in the Poi Bowl ?
” The Bruins won both previous meetings – 19-6, Nov. 15, 1935 at the Los Angeles Coliseum and 32-7, Jan. 2, 1939 in the Poi Bowl in Honolulu Stadium.
In the 1935 game, UH’s Tommy Kaulukukui earned the nickname “Grass Shack” following a record 103-yard kickoff return.”

From NaKoa report; re Naeole comment .”…then the defensive backs are one on one against good receivers
pick your poison.” I pick rushing the QB. Rosen will pick apart the secondary if allowed to sit back to view the field without pressure. Anyway, that’s what I think.

  52. Chicken Grease September 4, 2017 10:36 pm

If the Warriors want to win this, they cannot have in mind to “play he perfect game”—that is just stupid talk. I mean WHAT is that supposed to look like? Just WHAT game does EVERY single football fan agree is the “perfect game.” Thank God it’s a short week, because that means less time hearing it from thr local pundits, Sports Animals, Curran in the morning, a Leahy and the rest. Not YOU, Mr. Tsai as you are pretty damn sensible.

Look at a Mayweather, who has a perfect record but in many minds, NOT “the perfect boxer.”

What the heck IS a perfect game? I can’t trust it to sports news overpaid loudmouths to define that with their clichĂ© and bumper sticker philosophies.

    The Answer:
Warriors don’t have time to define that either. They simply need to play with what allowed them to win for the past two games. THIS team won.

    Thank you.

  53. amela September 4, 2017 11:34 pm

In my opinion the Warriors have several players who could play for UCLA and certainly be on the depth chart. This game is not as big a talent differential as was Michigan/Ohio State. That being said I think will see a few more snaps for different RBs. Think we’ll see DB on the read option running a little bit. Might see some counter action i.e. Reverse. Gonna pressure Rosen. So we will see how competitive we can make this and maybe even…….win. Watched the replay of the final scoring play of UCLA game and to me this was not a score-receiver from what I could tell did not secure ball till he clearly stepped out-GoWarriors!!!

how effective would a corner blitz, from either side or simultaneously, be using OLB or nickel back?

would a 4 x 4 defensive scheme help defend against the run and blitz packages?

can the corners and safeties defend the mid-to long range passes?

UH DC can create a totally new defensive strategy/schemes against UCLA?

if the “D” strategy is like the one used against Oregon State, it will be a long, long day for UH.

yet, I would be most happy with a win!!!!!!!!

  61. JesseJames September 5, 2017 9:04 am

    Good morning Tsaikos….

Long time no see but Warrior Football is back.

Planning on going to Blue Tropix (the old Dennys) at Pearlridge to catch the game on Saturday if anyone wants to go.

  62. H-Man September 5, 2017 9:26 am

IMO, a nickel defense would be ineffective, Rosen is that good. So best to put pressure on him. I thought Suiaunoa opened a rover position just for this situation. Exception for obvious passing down, maybe a nickel or dime defense. But I still like putting pressure on the QB.

And I hope the coaching staff comes up with a different game plan for UCLA. The plan implemented for UMass and WCU, while successful, won’t work against UCLA. They have too many good athletes.

  63. 2left September 5, 2017 9:39 am

For the 30 years since the 80s, UH admin and the Stadium Authority have done a lot to chase away students and fans – from choosing the flea market over tailgating, to moving the student section off the sidelines, to the poorly handled PPV situation. Good to see that Rolo understands that the student apathy was not all the fault of the students.
