Scott Smith derby

By Stephen Tsai on July 25, 2008

Scott Smith, a defensive end from Saint Louis School, received a limited release from his California football scholarship, according to his father, George Smith. Smith may have contact with Arizona, Arizona State and Oregon. It is a curious move because those three schools and California are members of the Pac-10 Conference. Without a release, Smith is not allowed to contact UH, which is a member of the Western Athletic Conference. UH also has a policy in which transferring students must […]

Zebras change stripes

By Stephen Tsai on July 20, 2008

A bunch of media folks — Jim Leahey, Bobby Curran, Robert Kekaula, Dave Reardon, Princess Leila, etc. — yesterday attended football official George Gusman’s annual party to review rule changes. The event is held at his house (referee’s striped shirt over the mailbox), and includes his wife’s finest baked goods as well as coffee made from beans grown at a relative’s farm in Kona. But I digress. Aside from learning the new rules against any helmet-to-neck-and-above contact and that all […]
