Game Day: Navy

By Stephen Tsai on November 28, 2009

For the Warriors, here are the keys: • Win the coin toss. Then take the opening kickoff. This is a game for the offenses. • Score on the opening drive. It might be another 8 minutes before the Warriors get the ball back. Navy is fourth nationally in time of possession, averaging 33 minutes, 38 seconds. UH is 73rd. • Need big games from Spencer Smith and Mana Silva. They’re patrolling the perimeters. • If the ball is on the […]

America’s team

From today’s practice: Head coach Ken Niumatalolo: * * * * * Today’s motto: * * * * * Everything is neatly labeled: * * * * * Each Friday practice concludes with a hit-the-crossbar competition. It’s offense against defense. Niumatalolo chooses the passers: * * * * * Here’s what I like about Navy: • It traveled by commercial flights, from Maryland to Dallas to here. * It is staying at a regular hotel in Waikiki. * It brought […]

Turkey tales

By Stephen Tsai on November 26, 2009

Nice practice today. I would use the word “animated” but Jim Donovan told me I use that to describe every Thursday practice. Anyway, Bryant Moniz was passing well, so he should be good to go. Jovonte Taylor had a nice kickoff return for a touchdown. And the Warriors worked on their new defensive scheme. During the kick return drill, Brian Blumberg was about to attempt a kickoff. But the coaches wanted Scott Enos to make the kick. So they yelled […]

Moniz practices

By Stephen Tsai on November 25, 2009

Bryant Moniz was able to throw during team drills today. If he remains healthy, he starts against Navy. For Saturday’s game, the depth chart is: 1) Moniz. 2) Shane Austin. 3) Brent Rausch. Against San Jose State, the depth chart was 1) Austin. 2) Inoke Funaki. 3) Rausch. * * * * * John Veneri and Kelly McGill — both members of the UH’s 1992 Holiday Bowl team — gave pointers on the triple-option offense after today’s practice. Here’s the […]

Alama-Francis signs with Dolphins

By Stephen Tsai on November 24, 2009

Former UH d-end Ikaika Alama-Francis has signed a free-agent contract with the Miami Dolphins. * * * * * Bryant Moniz did not throw today — not atypical of a Tuesday practice for him — and  he remains hopeful of playing in Saturday’s game against Navy. * * * * * Kamehameha-Hawai‘i athletic director Bob Wagner said he will attend Saturday’s game, his first UH football game in seven years. * * * * * Special thanks to our show’s […]

Enjoy the moments

By Stephen Tsai on November 23, 2009

Maybe the Warriors win the next two games. Maybe they don’t. Maybe they have three games left. Maybe only two. The thing is, when it’s March, we’ll all be saying: I wish there were a football game to watch. So, on Thanksgiving week, enjoy the moments. * * * * * T-Shirt Seeker correctly identified Matt Paul (now in the construction  business) and Bobby Morgan (now a financial planner). He wins two tickets to the Wisconsin game. E-mail me at […]

Good cheer

By Stephen Tsai on November 22, 2009

SAN JOSE — It was a happy morning for the Warriors in the aftermath of their 17-10 overtime victory over San Jose State. Head coach Greg McMackin, who stayed up most of the night analyzing the Warriors’ performance, managed a slight smile before downing his “breakfast” — two aspirin and a diet soda. McMackin, associate head coach Rich Miano, assistant head coach George Lumpkin, offensive coordinator Ron Lee and defensive coordinator Cal Lee departed  from the San Jose Marriott at […]

UH beats San Jose State in OT

By Stephen Tsai on November 21, 2009

SAN JOSE — In preparation for the game, the Warriors watched a video of the final six minutes of their 2007 victory over San Jose State. The idea came from associate head coach Rich Miano. There were eerie similarities, such as the fourth-quarter fumble and the defensive stand in overtime. * * * * * * * * * * I keep forgetting they’re still college kids. Which is why it should be understandable when a player said he skipped […]
