Moniz practices

Bryant Moniz was able to throw during team drills today. If he remains healthy, he starts against Navy.

For Saturday’s game, the depth chart is: 1) Moniz. 2) Shane Austin. 3) Brent Rausch. Against San Jose State, the depth chart was 1) Austin. 2) Inoke Funaki. 3) Rausch.

John Veneri and Kelly McGill — both members of the UH’s 1992 Holiday Bowl team — gave pointers on the triple-option offense after today’s practice. Here’s the linemen formerly known as McKill:

I was very pleased with Austin’s QB stats in last weeks game. I guess it shows that the passing game works if all things fall in place.

    good morning gangeeez!!!

Shane did a good enough job against SJSU, and it should be noted that this effort was like 1 1/2 game opportunities. I believe the difference betwen his play and Bryant’s is that Bryant has competed against stronger opponents (those with winning records) and has been on the loosing side of those outing. Defenses of winning programs are usually quicker more chrisp and act and react better than those with loosing records. He faced that while Shane did not.

Watching both pass to the flankers across the middle I noticed that Shane’s ball are thrown somewhat behind where the receiver is/will be while Bryant has started to get the passes to the receiver without htem having to reach back as much.

On game experience and against winning programs increases the QB’s ability to judge those throws a bit more and get better. Bryant has that going for him

That being said, going into a game aginst a wining program, you’d want the QB with that experience and game sense as you need every edge possible since we have not beaten a team with a winning record to date. If Bryant is ready to go in any way shape of form, even if he is hurting a bit but wants to play, play him. Colt played hurt and look at the results. With our backs to the wall, you need the best possible advantages as there is no tomorrow (bowl invite) if we loose this one.

    repost from last blog

    Royvic,

thanks. main thing, motivation and desire to be their best all comes together this week. This Navy game is a BIG deal.

no doubt Tsaikos mean all Hawaii Warrior peeps well, whether they played yesterday or today. We cheer people who play for us now, and those who played for us yesterday. So I’m gonna be polite and grateful and cheer Ken and Navy when they come into the stadium.

but I’m with Kazz. and I don’t mind riling up our Tsaiko Sailor Blue. But rather than say I’m cautiously optomistic, and then having riled him up I gotta wear da dummy outfit at Whisky game, I’m hedging and hawing.

I’m pulling for the underdog Shane. But I’m also relying on Rolo. he knows what he’s got. I’m liking how he’s getting better, imo.

like the story about the mother pig with 10 nipples, and get dozen little pigs.. you gotta fight for your food in life.

    have a nice day gang.

    Go Warriors.

I dont think there is anything secretive about Navy football.. They are a pretty confident bunch “we are going to pound the ball against you, it will be physical, go ahead and stop us if you can” …Pretty simple consistent game plan game in game out.

  19. Kekoa November 25, 2009 8:01 am

Bhf2 ~ Are you coming over to the t-gate early? The Cabana will be buzzing with predictions for the game, and surely you will have a chance to negotiate a deal with SailorBlue.

so, you gonna wait until after Whisky to tell me who in cahoots with who and whose on da outs? reading who is in da boot upstairs leaves little remaining options. 😀

main thing, those buggaz know they gotta put all dat stuff down
and spend all dare pent up energy and intelligencia and focus on
    this game. this game.

    RedZone

hope you is talking to Aranda. Play Mahow 2 plays per qtr. Put down da Friday quiz. tell coaches use their gut. they’ve watched these guys long enough. Time to play ball. This one gotta be precision, 40 degree angle to their center instead of 39 degree angle, you know what I mean? precision. and every once in a while throw a big palooka in dare for just plain ole smash mouth on da center but trying to bus up da other side guard too.

i will not feel good if Niumatalolo is looking all comfortable on the sidelines. I like see him reaching for the peptobismalz in da 1st qtr.

  23. al November 25, 2009 8:15 am

“Then again, UH kept its practices closed to the public all last week, then announced to a television reporter on Friday that Moniz would not play, giving San Jose State a day’s head’s up. The Spartans used that information to remain in pass coverage when Shane Austin had opportunities to scramble.”

perhaps it is the coaches who need a gag order.

    (another scratch head moment)

  24. SteveM November 25, 2009 8:16 am

    Good morning everyone!

…with today’s technologies, are secret practices possible unless you have an enclosed area with roof/dome?

  25. al November 25, 2009 8:17 am

i see bighilofan2 has been quoting royvic a lot lately. you two have become awfully close these days.

  26. bighilofan2 November 25, 2009 8:17 am

i also know coaches gotta use some kinda benchmark to explain to one kid why the other kid is playing, when you getting 3000 suiting up. 😀

so some guy in glasses comes up with a quizz. da quizz gonna get guys like King James to sit out da game. das not right i tellz you, das not right.

  27. postmanke November 25, 2009 8:29 am

    BHF2 – What?!? lol =)

I love Kenny, but i doubt he will be comfortable. I love watching him on the sidelines working the ref’s – he’s known to have blown a gasket on a ref’s a few times this season.

Still trying to figure out this line.. is Buddy Green’s pass defense that good? I know that have puka’s in the run D, but wow.. not too sure if it’s the smart money that is moving the line up. guess we have to wait if ST is going to say “hale, fale and peter pale” =)

  28. Tommy November 25, 2009 8:31 am

Mr. Stephen. Do I sense some anger in you regarding the media leak?

  29. postmanke November 25, 2009 8:37 am

    Tommy,

Yes, you can sense a lil bit of an emotional tone as the season goes on.. =) But, I would say he is doing a damn good job at conveying the information clearly with exemplifying the tone of annoyance. Yet! =)

    ok, maybe not the “hale”

  30. Manoa Mist November 25, 2009 8:38 am

I thought Austin did a pretty good job against SJSU. He throws a nice ball, had no interceptions, and he’s pretty fast on his feet. For a first start, kid looked good. Moniz is a nice QB, but if he’s going to be a running QB he’s going to need to bulk up a little. Hit that bench press in the weight room this summer. There was a reason Timmy used the chuck and duck. A skinny QB can get killed out there!

  31. postmanke November 25, 2009 8:39 am

My take on the game is quite simple. Don’t go crazy trying to out defense this triple option offense. Prepare do our best and just work hard, very hard.

Exactly. If the Hawaii players let it get into their heads, that is where the mental mistakes come into play. The Navy guys will be focused and disciplined because that is what they are trained to do outside of football so I doubt they will be in the mindset to try and outthink their assignments. They’ll get chunks of yardage against our poor run defense. Dobbs is like Tebow and likes to run at/over defenders. UH D just needs to hunker down and stop them from getting into the end zone. The Nevada game is not a good example of us stopping a good running team since Nevada was FUBARing themselves that day.

UH’s advantage is we have far more talent, size, and speed compared to Navy. The key lies in channeling that. Can our coaches really get the full potential out of these guys including the ones warming the bench eager for a shot to get in and show what they have?

Despite UH’s problems, this is one game where I feel we do have a good chance and I said it before just as you said, get into the end zone quickly and often like there is no tomorrow so that it will make Kenny and Ivin’s head spin longer and faster than Linda Blair’s in the Exorcist. We need Moniz to play the entire game for this to happen because he has that added dimension of being able to make things happen with his feet. We need our best A game and take what their defense gives us. We need the entire team and coaching staff to feel that we can bring it on full for 4 quarters. To the coaching staff, I have a huge appetite for some crows and mynah birds so get them hibachi’s ready! And please, keep your traps shut to the media.Loose lips sinks ships!

  41. madeinhawaii November 25, 2009 9:29 am

Moniz needs to start… get the ball rolling and take the team down to the end zone fast. BUT, Shane and Rausch gotta be ready on the sidelines. After a hard scramble, or two, it may be wise to get Shane in there for a down or two to let Moniz catch his breath.

Going to be a long night of last man standing.

    WARRIORS IMUA!

Larry Price – ask him how to stop the triple option.

In his day, he coached against some good wish-bone,
    y-bone, triple option offenses.

“Stop the bone inside – out”.

    1. Stop the fullback dive.
    2. Stop the QB keeper.
    3. Stop the pitch man.

Hey, maybe one of you knowledgeable guys can call Larry
for his insight, and report back here.

    t’anks eh.

GK thinks that Navy is practicing at Aloha Stadium, maybe in the afternoon or evening. Their practices are probably closed, too.

    BHF2,

On quizzes: These are student-athletes and they are in classes besides on the field. They are & should be used to listening to instruction and being able to remember what they heard, besides being able to put it into action. If the players are not paying attention and miss their assignment or block on the wrong side, do you think they should play? This is another way to reinforce learning: visual, aural, written, kinetic.

That said I hope my homies are paying attention at practice and not causing distractions on the side. You wanna play, you gotta focus.

  52. Derek November 25, 2009 10:41 am

The keys to winning this week against Navy.
    1) We need to score w/ big plays. I figure in order to win this game we needs to score at least 35 points, because we won’t stop Navy. We just have to slow them down.
    2) Discipline – Navy will be disciplined. Our players have to work their assignments correctly to prevent Navy from long gainers. The key is holding down QB Dobbs.
    3) It would help if UH can score a defensive touchdown, but that’s a big if.
    4) Win or break even the turnover battle.
    5) The kicking game – it might come down to a field goal. Eh, Enos?
Show confidence in yourself. You kicked a 47 yarder against UNLV so you can do it. You gotta believe.
    6) Time of Possession – if we’re even close to 50/50, UH has a good shot. I figure Navy will win the possession battle, thus the big plays are so important.
    7) Prediction – UH – 38, Navy 37.

    Good news about Moniz.

Veneri and McGill are good resources for the team to draw on; esp. regarding the blocking for the spread option.

  58. Stephen Tsai November 25, 2009 11:29 am

    Tommy:
Of course, I’m ticked. We’re all ticked.
The deal we all have is we’re not supposed to report on Friday’s practices. That’s when they run secret plays, finalize injury reports. Main reason we all agreed to it was because we don’t have equal access to the other team’s injury/strategy situations. So, from a competitive standpoint, it’s not right that if UH closes practices all week to hide Moniz’s availability, and then it comes out the day before the game.
It was no secret that Moniz wasn’t going to play. Both papers knew that; so did the all of theTV and radio stations. But UH said it wanted to keep it secret, so we’re all like, OK. One station didn’t live up to the agreement.

  59. Stephen Tsai November 25, 2009 11:34 am

By the way, we’re not ticked that it came out, so much as that now UH places further restrictions.
Next week is senior week. We’ll probably write: “Because of time constraints, we’ll have profiles on seniors whose last names are A through G …”

  60. Slugger November 25, 2009 11:41 am

  61. Slugger November 25, 2009 11:44 am

    ST ~

John Veneri and Kelly McGill — both members of the UH’s 1992 Holiday Bowl team — gave pointers on the triple-option offense after today’s practice.

But who did they give them to?

  62. madeinhawaii November 25, 2009 11:46 am

In the games I’ve seen Austin play, it seems that every time he gets to within 25 yards of the end zone, he can no longer see the yards in between. Unless a running play is called, it seems like he is always throwing into the end zone in double and sometimes triple coverage. Meanwhile, another man is completely open somewhere in between. While I like his determination and desire to get a TD, a little more patience with working the yards and first down markers that close to the end zone might do him well in future outings. Maybe it’s just the adrenalin flowing and lack of game experience. OR, for all that I know, maybe it’s the play calling.

Great performance by St Louis grad Masoli last week. Good for him he went to the mainland instead of playing here. If he played for UH, he would be sitting on the bench. That’s how messed up UH is.

  68. bstunna2002 November 25, 2009 12:38 pm

D gotta be on their toes this week linebackers need to make plays and kill the pitch man…I remember when we ran the triple option the way a d would stop us would be to kill the pitch man….by the end of the game he won’t be running as hard or as fast….

Hit the running backs on every play wether they get the ball or not be physical but play smart. Coach Mack and Coach Cal let the dogs loose Soares,Paredes and Huen.

  73. James November 25, 2009 12:54 pm

In the SJ game, the short rest when Inoke came in and when the offensive lineman made two off-sides and Inoke threw an errant pass that was blocked was just the boost QB Shane Austin needed to come back in the game and recharge the Warriors. These are the kind of things the coaches should look for to spark the team.

I think this will be a high scoring game because the Warriors won’t be able to stop Navy’s triple option. I don’t think Navy’s defense will be able to stop the Warriors offense and QBs Moniz and Austin either. Moniz is sharp in the first half and productive. In the third quarter he starts out flat and doesn’t make the passes or the receivers keep dropping the ball unlike what was happening in the first half. Whatever the reason, that is the time to bring in Austin to keep the offense going. And then bring back Moniz when he gets juiced up again. With these two quarterbacks spelling each other the Warriors should be in the game. And Rausch is available too. The Warriors haven’t seen Rausch in too much action yet. He should be ready too.

And the game may come down to the wire and determined by a field goal. Hope Scot Enos is ready mentally. Another thing, Green should protect the ball and hold it close to his body when running with the ball. His arm is flailing and that’s why the ball gets easily popped loose. He was lucky two times in the SJ game. Seen it happen in previous games too. Can’t make that kind silly mistakes and win over Navy.

This is gotta win game. The Warriors are hot! Go Warriors!

  78. Kazz November 25, 2009 1:05 pm

I’d like to see Enos be the difference maker in Saturday’s game. I personally still feel throwing him in at least in that early 4th and 5 conversion attempt instead of going for the 1st down would have been a better percentage of getting something on the scoreboard and avoiding an OT situation. Heck, throwing him in on 4th and 16 ALSO would have been a better percentage for 3 on the board instead of another 1st down or TD…

We shall see. I am beating a dead horse…

Well, now that I think about it, I’d rather NOT have ANY game come down to a field goal from ANY kicker, but can’t control fate… 🙁

    iwwthm,

Is it possible that if the Middies get up by a sizable amount that the HC:

    1) gets overcome with the Aloha Spirit for his Alma Mater and,
    2) starts thinking about The Game on his schedule next week

so he takes his foot off the gas and allows the host team back within the “margin”?

  90. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc November 25, 2009 2:01 pm

    Good morning everyone!

Anyone going to watch the vb game at a commercial establishment this afternoon? I forgot to set the dvr and don’t see that it’s going to be replayed. Not sure I can stay for the whole game, gotta pick up keed at 6:30.

    GO WAHINE!

Today’s game is at 4:30 Hawai`i Time so, given the Wahine’s superior skills, I suspect that everything will be pau by 5:45 pm.

Try stopping by Murphy’s downtown – there’ll definitely be a crew willing to shout out although I’m not sure if any of them are Tsai-kos.

There are also some decent sports bars in town where women are welcome. Try the one directly opposite the Honolulu Advertiser at the top of Kapi`olani Blvd.Cannot remember its name.

As for me, I’m fighting off a seriously major cold and can barely breathe, let alone stay awake. Hope I wake up in time to drive over to Boardrider’s to watch the champtionship match.

    d1,

you never, anything is possible :). the spirit of the holidays and Aloha may embrace everyone on that field come Saturday. Ken N. doesn’t gain anything from running up the score nor would he be inclined to against his alma mater i believe.

honestly it may very well come down to a OT or single TD/FG if our offense really clicks and Moniz is back 100%….

My “entertainment monopoly money” would be on Hawaii for this game…

Al, isn’t RB joshua quezada supposed to make a decision soon? I read somewhere that he enjoyed his trip to UH. I believe he plans on graduating early to enroll in college in january in time for spring drills, so we should be hearing about him real soon.

If I was a betting man Enos will be a part of the final outcome whether win or lose.

Hopefully it will be in a win.

Navy is going to pound it down our throat we just need to get a couple of stops and just keep the throttle up on offense. We do that and we win. We start being complacent and we get killed

    Bottom Line.

    There’s no if’s, and’s, or but’s about it.

CRW don’t have cable so no ESPNU but I do admire him for saving $80. with free rabbit ears. But I cannot go without my DirecTV and get every NFL games or 30 college Basketball games including most WAC or any major confence games. I saved over $400 on ppv and watched most UH games from west coast on DirecTV. I also have OC16 so I can watch local Hi school games too.

  113. jm2375 November 25, 2009 3:42 pm

I sure hope the announcers for the vb game aren’t the same idiots who did the FSU game.

BTW, I would prefer going to an establishment between Ala Moana & Manoa. So, I guess that means Genjis or my mom’s  with all the other senior citizens.

  114. MikeY November 25, 2009 3:45 pm

Oh, that’s 30 college BB games per week.

  115. Derek November 25, 2009 3:58 pm

We can’t get too excited that we won the last 3 ball games. They’re
at the bottom of the WAC standings. We have short memories. We are what we are still…a struggling offense that has a hard time scoring in the red zone and a porous defense that is one of the worst in FBS (Division IA). I’d like to think that the team has gotten better, but you have to factor the opponents that we have been playing.

This week, we are stepping up in class quite a bit, an 8-3 team that has beaten Air Force, Wake Forest, and Notre Dame just a few. And Wake Forest beat Stanford. I hope the home field advantage helps. If anything, I would hope that the UH players are not over confident just because they won their last 3 games, because if they are they will get a rude awakening.

Just my opinion. Quezada and Fehoko are not committing to UH. When a guy says the disadvantage for Hawaii is the distance then you already know he’s not coming. Fehoko, there’s nothing to indicate he’s serious
about UH. I think he’s going to Texas Tech w/ his brother or Utah St.
And that would be too bad, because these guys could help the program.
Good for UH to make sure the recruits can be eligible to play as a freshman, otherwise they look for somebody else.

  116. Pride. November 25, 2009 4:12 pm

What evidence is their that leads us to the conclusion that the Warriors are bigger, stronger, faster and more athletic than the Middies. I understand how we can be called bigger. However, I do not have enough information that tells me that we are stronger, faster, and more athletic. Can someone please enlighten me? I’m not a hardcore football fanatic so wouldn’t know where to get the information that would help me to conclude the aforementioned.

  117. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 25, 2009 4:24 pm

    Pride,

I have yet to find any information of the “stronger, faster, and athletic,” that would lead to such conclusions. You are right that we can be called “bigger” by pure comparison of rosters.

  118. (Jesse) James November 25, 2009 4:30 pm

    chawan…#111
LV had 100 to 1 odds that year that UH would go undefeated.

  119. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 25, 2009 4:38 pm

One can argue that Notre Dame is “bigger, faster, stronger” than UH (watching last years Bowl game and you could make an educated guess)…

Navy took on the “bigger, faster, and stronger” team at Notre Dame…and well what was the result?

i wont buy into the fact that just because we “might” size up better than the incoming team that we automatically have a great chance of winning this game. it may be a PLUS, but since we are struggling we could be in the same theoretic boat as Notre Dame. I thought we had better “talent” than Idaho but since Idaho was playing good football and we were struggling we lost.

Notre Dame arguably has some of the best talent in college ball but all fingers point to the coaches and their inability to utilize it…See ya Charlie.

Come the week after when we really play a “big” team in Wisconsin they will have the size advantage and all those goodies like talent….but they are also a really really good football team.

The answers to winning this game are close to home…

    Thanks.

  122. kama krab November 25, 2009 5:07 pm

    Derek #115,

I agree with you that no one should get too excited about this recent three game winning streak that we are on because of the opponents that we had played. I had said this for a couple of weeks now that this would be our best chances to win all season and look we won all three. Now where this helps the team is in the confidence deparment. Yeah they might have thought that these where winnable games but theres a difference between thinking you can win and actually winning. This three game winning streak will also help in the momentum of this team. Like they say winning can be contagious. We’ll just have to wait and see.

And on the subject of recruiting Quezada and Fehoko.

First off Fehoko. No one really thought we would land Fehoko in the first place. It would have been nice but no one would really be surprised if he decided to go away for school. There was no sence even bringing Fehoko up.

Oh and by the way Utah St. has just as much a chance as we do to get Fehoko. I think you where trying to say Utah. Texas Tech does have the upper hand but watch out for Sark. He is on the hunt and has been recruiting Fehoko personally.

Quezada on the other hand is still up in the air. Yes he has stated that we are kind far away but is he really wants to be here in the end that will not make a difference. If I where a betting man though I would think he would end up at Utah but betting men don’t always win. We will just have to wait and see on this. He should be making his decision after his trip to Utah, which will be his second trip there. One was an unoficial.

    Hawai’i 48, Navy 41 Nov. 20, 1999 | Aloha Stadium | Honolulu, Hawai’i
Hawai’i outscored Navy, 48-41, in front of 41,895 fans at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu. The game was a see-saw affair with no team leading by more than 14 points. The Mids played without starting quarterback Brian Madden for the entire third quarter and the first five minutes of the fourth quarter because of severe cramping. Madden carried the ball 29 times for 150 yards and two touchdowns and completed four of his 11 pass attempts for 65 yards and a touchdown. Fullback Raheem Lambert rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries.

Das what we need… 41,895 fans to start… cramp Navy’s style, go tit for tat and in the end, simply out score them by one TD or more. If the 1999 team could do it… so can our 2009 team.

Wow… a whole decade and another coaching change.

  185. kama krab November 25, 2009 7:28 pm

It is raining pretty good here in Waipahu.

  188. kama krab November 25, 2009 7:40 pm

Congrats to the Wahine for another WAC Championship.

  189. Garret November 25, 2009 7:46 pm

Whatever happened to Ball State? Weren’t the Cardinals undefeated till something like the last week of the season last year?

    madeinhawaii,

Ball State’s head coach and some of their assistant coaches left Ball State after the season and went to San Diego State. SDSU chose Hoke over DeWayne Walker, then Walker settled for the NMSU job.

SDSU *significantly* improved under Hoke and Ball State significantly dropped without him. Still, SDSU is just 4-7, but they were 2-10 last year and were worse than their record. With a good recruiting class this year, Hoke could have SDSU in a bowl game next year.

  190. Garret November 25, 2009 7:52 pm

Nice article on Ken Niumatalolo in the Annapolis Capital-Gazette.

“I could stand here and tell you it’s just another game, but it’s more than just another game. I’ve tried to hold back the emotions and excitement, but it’s going to be hard once I finally walk into that stadium,” Niumatalolo said. “I’m sure there’s going to be a lot of emotion, a few tears.”

“That stadium holds a lot of great memories for me. In high school, my team won the state championship there. I played and coach there when I was at Hawaii,” Niumatalolo said. “As a young boy, I used to sell newspapers there. I remember rooting for the Warriors and hanging out by the locker room hoping someone would throw you up a wristband.”

  191. A-House November 25, 2009 7:53 pm

Just back from dinner with a very special boyhood friend who now lives in Indiana and just heard the good news that the Wahine swept NMS in LV.

YES! Congrats to Coach Shoji and the players. Keep the dream alive as another NCAA championship banner hanging in the SC would be worhty of a grand celebration!

  192. Garret November 25, 2009 7:53 pm

“As excited as I am about this game, I also know how long a flight it is. I don’t want to come back a loser. That would really spoil the entire trip,” Niumatalolo said.

  193. Garret November 25, 2009 7:56 pm

Amazing that Niumatalolo at one point had to take a sales job because he couldn’t even get a high school coaching job…and now he’s the first Samoan head football coach at any level in college.

That stint ended abruptly after just two seasons when head coach Charlie Weatherbie fired Niumatalolo due to ongoing professional and personality conflicts.

Niumatalolo failed to land a high school coaching job and tried his hand at sales before latching on as an assistant at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas and resurrecting his career in 1999. A decade later, he is only the second Polynesian head coach in the Football Bowl Subdivision and the first collegiate head coach on any level of Samoan descent.

  194. Garret November 25, 2009 7:56 pm

Tuika Tufaga, a starting defensive tackle for the Warriors, is Niumatalolo’s nephew.

  195. kama krab November 25, 2009 7:57 pm

So to follow up on #122.

I think it would be great to one day get guys like a Manti Teo, Shaydon Akuna, V.J. Fehoko, and the like but as of right now, for most of us we know that it will not happen any time soon. We can always hope and dream but kids at this level will always want to move on to bigger and better things. This is just the facts.

What we can do as fans is just congratulate them and hope they do well at whatever school they go to. We do this as fans because it may not work out for the player in the mainland and the player might want to come back. When this does happen we can celebrate and welcome them back with open arms.

We have already seen evidence of this with the return of guys like Kaniela Tuipolotu (sp?), Gary Nagy, and Josh Manupuna (sp?). These guys will be big time contributors at Hawaii next year and we are just happy that they have decided to come back.

I hope that one day we will get guys at the caliber of the above stated but for know I am definitely happy with the guys that we have gotten so far. As you might call them “daimonds in the ruff”.

  196. Garret November 25, 2009 8:00 pm

Ken Miumatalolo’s father is a retired Chief Petty Officer who will get to see his son coach Navy against UH…with his older brother serving in the Navy flying to Hawaii to be at the game and with his three sisters who still live in Hawaii there also…

Simi and Lamala Niumatalolo will be in attendance at Aloha Stadium to see their son coach Navy against his alma mater. Older brother Jim, a Lieutenant Colonel in the Navy now stationed at the Pentagon in D.C., is traveling back for the game. Three sisters who still live in Hawaii are also going to the game along with their children.

“We’re very, very excited and looking forward to seeing Kenneth. This is a day we would never dream of,” said 75-year-old Simi Niumatalolo, retired after serving 23 years as a Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Coast Guard. “We’re very proud of Kenneth and what he has accomplished.”

  197. Garret November 25, 2009 8:20 pm

The start of #196 should be “Ken Niumatalolo”. I also should make it clear that it is Ken’s older brother and sisters attending the UH game, since my sentence could make it seem like it was his Dad’s siblings.

Article about how BSU needs Oklahoma to beat Oklahoma State in order to get a BCS Bowl spot.

Three years after Boise State shocked — some would say embarrassed — the Sooners in a 2007 Fiesta Bowl for the ages, Boise now needs Norman’s help.

It needs Oklahoma to beat Oklahoma State.

An Oklahoma victory in Norman almost assures Boise State will not get left out of a major bowl game if it finishes 13-0.

An Oklahoma State victory, though, would make the Cowboys Bowl Championship Series eligible at 10-2 and probably knock Boise State out.

  204. madeinhawaii November 25, 2009 9:05 pm

One of the posters on SH suggested that the reason Boise didn’t have too many players making it to the next level year after year, wasn’t because their athletes weren’t as good or better than the Warriors, but because the players are platooned fequently, no player really gets to shine or establish himself firmly into the minds of the scouts. Meanwhile, players in Hawaii who become starters can rack up the sacks, tackles, moments under the lights and show their stuff time and time again. They are battle tested and have demonstrated their durability.

I thought this was an interesting perspective.

    What do you guys think?

  205. d1島 November 25, 2009 9:34 pm

It seems we have come far from the original purpose of the setting aside of a day for our nation to give thanks as our first President proclaimed.

Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me “to recommend to the people of the United States a Day Of Public Thanksgiving and Prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:”

    Happy Thanksgiving All.

  206. RainbowCliff November 25, 2009 9:49 pm

ST: Mahalo kind sir for the San Jose photo shots. Love that poster of ALL the Primo bottles Hawaii made as you captured my happiness owning this picturesque of Hawaii lager history.

Rainbow Menehuene looks GOOD as my back and lats really bring out the boldness of this Hawaii retro logo which is still TODAY popular among the loca faithful as I had a Female Warrior fan after the game ask me where she can get my sweatshirt as I replied Janet Useyda of “Hawaii Styles” will fill the answer.

  207. tommui November 25, 2009 9:49 pm

GARRET: No biggie but there is no rank of Lt. Col in the Navy.

He could be a Marine or if in the Navy and if he is wearing silver oak leafs, it would be a Commander.

Trivia and has nothing to do with the story.

  208. RainbowCliff November 25, 2009 9:54 pm

    Good Night Tsaiko Nation.

  209. Garret November 25, 2009 10:00 pm

    Tom Mui,

Weird, you would think that the Annapolis paper would know the ranks in the Navy!

  210. Garret November 25, 2009 10:01 pm

By the way, bestbuy.com has some of their Black Friday deals available on their website right now…free shipping to Hawaii.

We needed a new printer and a new scanner…Best Buy has an HP printer/scanner with WiFi for about half price (about $65).

  211. J November 25, 2009 10:05 pm

There is a Lt. Col James Niumatalolo, US Army. Maybe the Annapolis paper can’t mention that branch of service…

  212. Garret November 25, 2009 10:10 pm

    J,

Changing the branch of service would be an even bigger error by that Annapolis paper!

  213. Garret November 25, 2009 10:13 pm

    madeinhawaii,

I really do not think that your #204 post is the explanation for BSU’s low draft numbers. The NFL really cares about combine numbers and physical stats. and it just doesn’t appear that BSU has the type of athletes on paper than the drafted Warriors.

If that theory was correct, then a player like RGM or Adam Leonard or Sol Elimimian would have been drafted. They played a LOT and shined on the field…and they were not drafted.

  214. Garret November 25, 2009 10:19 pm

Bess put up HUGE stats and ran a slow 40 time (even though he ran a great shuttle time and shuttle time is more important for a slot receiver), and he wasn’t drafted.

Every year many college players put up a great 40 time or bench a high number or reps and they get drafted way above what their college playing career would suggest. I do not understand the reliance on the stopwatch and measurements by NFL scouts…I would think they should put greater weight on on-field performance in college, but I guess the stopwatch gives them an excuse if a player does not pan out.

  215. Kekoa November 25, 2009 10:51 pm

Ken Niumatalolo’s story is a really great feel good story. i’m gonna be truly sorry dat his siblings gonna bereave fo dat boy when Tuika goes and busses up Navy, becomes da star container of the QB option.

Coaches, you just gotta know that MOST of the running option gonna be away from Tuika’s side. i say play him hard, play him often, give him spells, and let our Warrior SHINE. plan for it.

  233. bighilofan2 November 26, 2009 12:34 am

Tuika got my back! yes sir! he ain’t gonna let dis uncle wear no frilly dress with minnie pearl necklace wit da price tag. Not gonna let no Commander put da dress on a Warrior, NO SIR! 👿
