Game Day: Navy

For the Warriors, here are the keys:

• Win the coin toss. Then take the opening kickoff. This is a game for the offenses.

• Score on the opening drive. It might be another 8 minutes before the Warriors get the ball back. Navy is fourth nationally in time of possession, averaging 33 minutes, 38 seconds. UH is 73rd.

• Need big games from Spencer Smith and Mana Silva. They’re patrolling the perimeters.

• If the ball is on the 1, everybody should go after Navy quarterback Ricky Dobbs. He has 22 touchdowns this season. Offensive coordinator Ivin Jasper told the Washington Post: “We’re probably leading the country in guys falling down at the 1-yard line. I always tell our guys in meetings — I joke around with it, but at the same time it’s true — ‘Hey guys, if you got a chance to score, you better score. Because if you don’t score, you know what’s coming next. We’re giving the ball to the quarterback.’ ”

• Left tackle Aaron Kia should change his number. Maybe it’s larynx memory, but the officials seem to call “77” too often, even when another might have committed the penalty.

* * * * *

Quick response by UH officials. Two players suffered from flu-like symptoms. They were quarantined for a couple of days while being treated. They should be on the active roster today.

* * * * *

After UH defeated Cal in 1993, we were walking to the parking lot when we saw two Cal players limping, with ice packs on their knees, shins and ankles. We asked what happened. They said it was from cut blocks. Poor bastards, we thought. Now UH gets to face the same blocks today. The circle of life.

No such thing as a QB Sneak for Navy?

  11. Garret November 28, 2009 7:59 am

Win the coin toss. Then take the opening kickoff. This is a game for the offenses.

I completely agree with this point…but Mac has consistently decided to always take the ball to start the 2nd half when UH wins the toss. So, we should amend ST’s statement to read “Hope Navy wins the toss and chooses to defer to the second half.”

  12. wafan November 28, 2009 7:59 am

Wow. The UH actually acted quickly?

Or were you referring to the University of Houston?

  13. Stephen Tsai November 28, 2009 8:00 am

Why is DPK calling wafan “your excllency”?

  14. Garret November 28, 2009 8:01 am

If the ball is on the 1, everybody should go after Navy quarterback Ricky Dobbs. He has 22 touchdowns this season.

Dobbs is *1* rushing TD away from the NCAA record for rushing TDs for a QB. I am sure that all of his teammates are aware of that, and I hope that UH makes him set the record against Army.

  15. Da Punchbowl Kid November 28, 2009 8:02 am

After the way the lads from Kapalama played last night, I say anything’s possible. When UH scuttles Navy tonight, I will be in true football nirvana.

  16. wafan November 28, 2009 8:03 am

Since the team seems to fall asleep in the 3rd getting the ball at that time appears to be pointless. Why not take it in the 1st where they do better?

  17. wafan November 28, 2009 8:05 am

    Certainly, not I.

  18. postmanke November 28, 2009 8:05 am

Dobbs yards after contact is a freaky stat. he is one tough guy to bring down

  21. Garret November 28, 2009 8:07 am

Dobbs had 5 TDs in their last game, and is a big reason why their offense is so confident in the red zone. Their last game was against a I-AA team and he scored TDs all 5 times they were in the red zone.

Navy’s offense has a swagger, particularly when it gets within 20 yards of the end zone. As senior guard Osei Asante put it: “In the red zone, we should never be stopped. It’s automatic points when we get down there.”

In their 35-18 victory over division I-AA Delaware on Saturday, the Midshipmen made five trips into the red zone. Each of them ended with a Dobbs touchdown.

  22. Stephen Tsai November 28, 2009 8:09 am

What is Dobbs’ yards after contact?

  23. Da Punchbowl Kid November 28, 2009 8:09 am

Wafan’s sorta excellent in his own way.

  24. Garret November 28, 2009 8:09 am

It is amazing that Dobbs has scored more rushing TDs than any QB or RB for Navy, and he’s about to break the NCAA’s single-season record despite missing most of 2 games.

His five scores — which totaled 10 yards — set a Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium record. Dobbs has scored 22 touchdowns this season, which breaks the single-season school record set by running back Bill Ingram in 1917. His 22 rushing touchdowns are also one shy of the NCAA single-season record for a quarterback (held by Florida’s Tim Tebow and Air Force’s Chance Harridge).

“The record itself, I think it goes to our offensive line and the fullbacks blocking on each play,” said Dobbs, who missed most of two games last month while resting a cracked right kneecap. “To have this team achieve a record like that, this offense achieve a record like that, is definitely a blessing in itself. The hard work actually pays off.”

  25. Garret November 28, 2009 8:11 am

Navy had to play their backup FB in their previous game, but the coaches took him out before Dobbs could get him a TD.

Sophomore fullback Alexander Teich, who started in place of junior Vince Murray (in uniform, but resting a sore shoulder), set up Dobbs’s second and fourth touchdowns with runs that ended inside the five-yard line. Early in the third quarter, Teich was tripped up at the one following an eight-yard gain. In the fourth quarter, Teich broke loose for a 22-yard run — his longest of the game — and was brought down at the two.

Teich finished the game with 57 yards on nine carries. He is still waiting to score his first touchdown this season.

“I wouldn’t say I owe him too much because it’s his fault he slipped,” Dobbs said with a smile. “I told [Teich] that if we get back inside there and he was in the game, I was going to check a fullback play so he could get into the end zone. I’d take getting chewed out by Coach. But they took him out.”

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.

    ST
    you’re gushing on Navy.

that jazz about football only being a part of the big picture
    BULL

no wonder we got so many emotionally mixed up peeps in Hawaii.

    in da compliance office

    and on the BOR

they’re all wondering about making the move, like getting stuffs togedda for NCAA: should I start now?????
about using volunteers and extra help, can I copy a HIPAA waiver form
and get the player to sign the release so SLUGGER can help me do my job? sheesh! monkey see monkey dooo doo. meanwhile,

    BEAT NAVY.

    get your priorities right!

okay, i feel betta now. 😀

    DPK,

brew808’s artwork really is amazing. He put an ASCII picture on my daughter’s blog and she found it so interesting that she spent an afternoon figuring out how to make (smaller) pictures of her own. I know all of UH’s YACs, YAHs, yards-after-juking, missed tackles, yards-after-misses, etc. Well, mostly because I chart them.
But “Ferd” has me beat. He has so many charts. He knows the weather at games for the past 35 years.

  31. Garret November 28, 2009 8:16 am

I’m glad that UH reacted quickly to prevent the spread of the flu. The swine flu has really hit some teams hard this season and affected the outcome of a number of games.

  32. Garret November 28, 2009 8:17 am

    brew808,

I know, Faith’s Dad really can be an idiot sometimes. But she will just make a bigger and better photo and post it on her blog next time so her parents won’t lose it.

Navy is #27 in the country in the red zone, scoring 38 out of 44 times. 33 out of 44 times they scored a TD, 75% of their red zone attempts.

I think their 75% TD stat puts them #4 in the country for TD percentage in the red zone. UH scores TDs 44% of the time in the red zone. UH *needs* to win the red zone battle to win this game, so hopefully the players will execute the plans by the coaches.

  40. Garret November 28, 2009 8:27 am

Sadly, I have to work now (proposal due on Thursday), but I’ll be watching the game and will be back on the blog after the game.

  41. Stephen Tsai November 28, 2009 8:27 am

OK, I have no idea what bighilo just said.
But if it was about yesterday’s post, I know the Sateles asked if they could start the appeal process in August. They were told no, they had to wait until after the season. But then they found they had to wait until after the season. Then they learned an SC player initiated his appeal. They went back to UH, and was told that, yes, they could start the appeal process.
Trouble, as I understand it, is that if Satele graduates in December, he has to come off football scholarship. That would mean UH would have to make him a student manager while he awaits his appeal.
I really don’t think it’s a problem about getting a sixth year. But with the NCAA, you never know. If he has no chance, he might as well train for an NFL tryout. If he has a chance, it’s worth it to be a student manager, although he wouldn’t be allowed to participate in spring training.

  42. βρεω808 November 28, 2009 8:28 am

Forget about the YACs, YAHs, STATS….. 🙄

We want to see and talk about the WHACKs!, PAATAACKs!!, & SMACKS!!! the WARRIORS can lay on the navy crew! 😈

  43. Stephen Tsai November 28, 2009 8:29 am

By the way, I use YAH for yards after hit, and use YAC for yards after catch.

  48. Stephen Tsai November 28, 2009 8:36 am

went to a wedding last weekend and during the disco part of the event the dj spins out “tricky”.

after which i couldn’t get that popular youtube video out of my head. it is still bouncing around my cranium. i had a thought every wedding reception should hire tsai to do the number just to get the crowd on the floor.

    ah, tricky………

  52. al November 28, 2009 8:41 am

totalling agree that we need to take the ball and drive it in for a score from the get go.

i believe too that a shootout will be the way game goes. it will be like watching the offense of old (rainbow warrior days) versus the somewhat newer run n shoot.

i am thinking the end will be 45-42. everyone shall be entertained no doubt.

  53. Stephen Tsai November 28, 2009 8:42 am

In the past three games, Leon Wright-Jackson’s YAH is 7.62. That’s pretty phenomenal.

  59. Stephen Tsai November 28, 2009 8:47 am

On passes of at least 20 yards from the line of scrimmage, Moniz is 4 of 14 this season.

  60. al November 28, 2009 8:47 am

    hey, nalani.
are we betting lunch this year?

  61. madeinhawaii November 28, 2009 8:48 am

Unless UH can score from beyond the Redzone… start hitting those deeper routes. Can always hope for it. Sooner or later.. it’s gotta come.

  62. d1島 November 28, 2009 8:48 am

    Nalani,

Nice job last night. Next one going be epic…best two teams this year in Hawaii HS FB.

  63. Da Punchbowl Kid November 28, 2009 8:48 am

If Moniz is full speed, I truly expect the Warriors to win. With him back there, our offense can outscore Navy. And YAH, our running game is looking legit these last few games… (Got that pun there gangeez? “YAH”? Get it?!)

  64. Stephen Tsai November 28, 2009 8:50 am

On passes of at least 20 yards from the line of scrimmage, Alexander was 8 of 23.
Again, that’s where the ball is in the air from the line of scrimmage, not from where it was thrown.

  65. Stephen Tsai November 28, 2009 8:50 am

    Al:
    You going to the tailgate?
    I’ve got your Wisconsin tickets.

  66. al November 28, 2009 8:53 am

yup, if he could complete 50% of his “go long” passes we would win every game.

that long pass completion ratio is what made colt so deadly. we have sorely missed that kind of accuracy.

imagine what our YAGLP would be.

The Beast and his Wildcats down 0-7 at Wm & Mary, 2nd Q.

#2 son and his Wildcats less than 1 hr from Kick-off. He gotta sit this one out with a ding from last week….

  72. Stephen Tsai November 28, 2009 8:56 am

William & Mary (Nephel). Remember when they were co-coaches for UH’s women’s basketball?

  73. Nalani November 28, 2009 8:56 am

Al – yes, let’s bet lunch on Kahuku/Kamehameha! Of course, I’m betting on the men in blue/white. Nobody gave us credit this year, but after a decent preseason and then an early loss to Iolani, Kamehameha’s gotten better and better on both sides of the ball. We will never take Kahuku lightly, but this KS team is very very strong and very consistent. Kahuku didn’t score a single TD against Farrington, only FGs.

For UH fans, our household thinks we are gonna win today. Navy has weaknesses and UH is ending strong. This is a nice weekend in the Choy household.

Sorry we can’t make the tailgate (again!).

  74. al November 28, 2009 8:56 am

dpk…i went to public hs. so yah we get those common sense stuff on a regular basis.

  75. Nalani November 28, 2009 8:58 am

Re: Beau Yap, and UH….He is such a fine young man and comes from a great family. Would love to see him play for us. But I don’t think UH offered? Maybe they did, but I’m not aware of it. Beau is so humble about his offers that he doesn’t talk much about them.

Today’s HI-5 collection will be given to the Men’s Scholarship Fund. Next week’s drive will go towards the Women’s Scholarship Fund.

    See you later.

Yes Al. Pono is luvin it this year as a Soph on the Varsity, and will have 2 more seasons to play.

Kahai’s Sr season was Coach Stant’s first year coaching HS football. I believe their team was even stronger than this one, but the coaches were green and the team was suffering from 3 different coaches in 3 consecutive seasons (Doss/Souza/Stant). So unfortunately, that KS team didn’t put it all together. But Kahai is cheering for his little Bro with all his heart. Very cool to see.

    Re 42

ST if Satele was a grad student while waiting word on his 6th year would he then still be able to practice with the team?

Lippincott with was in a similar situation but he was able to practice with the team while waiting word. I believe he was enrolled in grad school.

#87 – Aahh that’s nice. Gotta luv our local boyz. They’ve grown up playing this game. That’s one of the reasons they’re so good at it and outplay their taller/bigger/faster mainland counterparts on a regular basis.

We’re glad to get to play Kahuku in the final. It will be an awesome game, and whomever wins, can truly call themselves State Champ.

  90. Da Punchbowl Kid November 28, 2009 9:29 am

    al-
I’d take that bet too, but I don’t want to put you out two lunches! 😆

    Nalani-
Isn’t this KS team relatively young? Lets hope they can keep it rolling. Its great to see Boyd and Bill coaching with Stant.

  91. PowderPuff November 28, 2009 9:31 am

Hey, Al! Morning everyone…brew808, wafan, ST!! What’s up?!?! Al, not sure if I’ll get down to the tailgate, but sure do hope to see you soon.

  92. Ralph November 28, 2009 9:31 am

Na Wahine had 27 TO last night, the second time in 4 games with 27 TO. Handle the ball better, spread the floor, open the passing lanes, then the wins will come. Of course they got to get the ball in the hoop, difficult to score without the ball, but they do have Kuehu and a few other girls who can score from the paint if they had the ball.

    kk…been sending you some emails.

  96. Kazz November 28, 2009 9:50 am

    Hmmm…

Even if we do score in our first possession it will either bet 7-7 or 7-0. Then if another 8 minutes go by, what will this do for our offensive rhythm?

It seems like our offense IS built for a “shoot-out” type game.

Defense will have to play out of their bodies and will have to perform like men possessed!!!

  97. Kazz November 28, 2009 9:54 am

    Warriors,

No time like the present to make some noise, kick some OKOLE, and win a football game!!!

  98. Nalani November 28, 2009 9:56 am

Al – our 25th Anniv CD just released this week, exclusive to Wal-Mart/Sams Club for the holidays. It will be in full national distribution in January.

  99. Nalani November 28, 2009 10:02 am

DPK – yes this team has a lot of talent returning next year and then again, Pono’s class of 2012 has a lot too. We actually thought that next year was gonna be our strength, so it’s awesome to see how well they’re doing this year.

We’ve always had talent and size at KS, but I think the biggest thing that Coach Stant has changed is the weight training program and spring/summer conditioning and skills. The boys take it very seriously and know that if they don’t put the work in, they won’t start. It wasn’t always like that before. Too much Senior-itis in prior years.

  100. Stephen Tsai November 28, 2009 10:03 am

    Re: Satele
Either way, he can’t practice until he’s approved for an extra year.
But he does come off football scholarship in December.

  101. Stephen Tsai November 28, 2009 10:10 am

I brought the topic up because this will be the third such case under this administration. Libre was rejected (although I didn’t think he had a strong case), Maka had to wait until mid-season (and he had a great case). Like I said, I’m sure Satele should be OK. But you never know.

  102. Kazz November 28, 2009 10:11 am

    Ralph,

I’m a stickler for the intangibles. You are right of course as we can all see the X’s and O’s type stuff the Wahine need to continue to work on, but I already like the attitude I’m seeing.

I’m seeing a team full of young ladies ready to play ball and play for themselves and a coaching staff that will back them up and support them to the fullest.

No more lame-o excuses like “these are not my girls”… PFFFFTTT!!!!!!

Been waiting for Kuehu to “bust out”. I keep forgetting she’s been away from the organized game for a year now. I like what she brings to the team. I could help but yell when she had that block towards the end of the 1st half where she pretty much ripped the ball away from that ASU girl and then pointed to the ball in her hands as if to say “this is MINE”!

In time, she’ll be hitting those FGs she missed last night.

  103. madeinhawaii November 28, 2009 10:22 am

Earlier, before the season started, I asked… “If the team were to go undefeated until the Navy game and Satele was alll healed up, would you play him or still keep him out for the possibility of getting him an extra year?”

Now with a bowl game at stake, if Satele is in shape and ready to make a difference on Defense, would you play him? Or would you still take your chances of petitioning the NCAA to try and get him another year?

  104. Nalani November 28, 2009 10:24 am

I wouldn’t play Satele this year. His injuries seem to be recurring. Give him the time to heal.

  105. Kazz November 28, 2009 10:45 am

    RE: Satele.

As with any athlete at UH coming back from a big injury like a Brashton Satele or more recently a Bill Amis. I would always favor redshirting them or seeking medical hardship if more than half the season is gone, especially if they are a senior.

Of course the decision lies within the student athlete themselves and their families, but I think they’d do the same.

  106. mctruck November 28, 2009 11:07 am

Now that Oklahoma has beaten OSU, that eliminates one more obstacle for BSU to get a BCS invite,$$$$$.

  107. Stephen Tsai November 28, 2009 11:13 am

UH should be in good shape for next year, if it can get some sixth-year players.
The team really missed Aaron Brown.
And they get Brysen Ginlack, Laupepa Letuli, Brett Leonard, Malcolm Lane, Tim Brown and Cory Daniel back next year.

  108. al November 28, 2009 11:37 am

i guess i’ll have to go to walmart.

  109. al November 28, 2009 11:38 am

yah, not yards after hit. but, yah, we should be in great shape next season. if brash can get his year and hot rod is good to go. and the way that hansen filled in as well.

    well.

Is it just me or have the Ponies have been playing down to their opponents’ level the past few weeks:

Eek out wins against Rice, UTEP, barely leading against Tulane.
    Close loss @ Marshall.

  115. Maverick November 28, 2009 12:22 pm

    Boise has one more hurdle.
    New Mexico St.

Ok, it’s a small hurdle, but gotta take everything seriously.

Then that road to the Fiesta, or Sugar will sound sweet to them.

  116. Kazz November 28, 2009 12:26 pm

Again, I asked an online crystal ball:

Will the University of Hawaii Warrior Football team defeat the Midshipmen of Navy today?

    Answer: “Absolutely”.

  117. Committed Road Warrior November 28, 2009 12:26 pm

Is that Robb Akey sporting a maile lei today?

  118. Kazz November 28, 2009 12:28 pm

NMSU is a skittle in the middle of a 5 lane highway with BSU driving a Peterbilt semi…

  119. Kazz November 28, 2009 12:29 pm

Did Rodney Bradley get a maile lei?

  120. Kazz November 28, 2009 12:32 pm

Many have suggested that if the BCS were smart, they’d allow BSU in just to get people like me off their okole because they’d actually do the RIGHT thing by having two undefeated and TOP 10 ranked teams into a BCS bowl game REGARDLESS of conference affiliation.

But, I’m not giving ANY credit to the system… Odds are in favor of BSU getting the shaft AGAIN this year.

    Unfortunate news about Weber St.

I still can’t believe Montana scored 34 points in the 4th quarter to beat South Dakota St. They were down 24 at one point early in the second half. I almost wrote them off.

  126. madeinhawaii November 28, 2009 1:11 pm

34 points in a single quarter? Pretty impressive.

Just a reminder.. men’s BB on right now.

  127. royvic November 28, 2009 1:24 pm

For the Warriors against Navy today, I’m hoping the coaches game plan simulates the idea that the playing field is a battlefield, and that their players are combatants, and that their strategy attacks the weaknesses of their opponent. Simple thinking ala General-like thinking, as fact. But the coaches need to do this. And ingrain the idea that it is a battlefield. And a penalty, or false start, or miscues leads to casualties in real wars. Because undoubtedly this is the methodology Navy cultivates. And Boise and Florida, too.

Kill or be killed might sound sinister but it’s ingrained in the ways Navy approaches the game. And Boise and Florida to name a few of the good teams that see this.

And this is what the Warrior coaches should impress upon their players in today’s game against Navy if they are hungry for a win. And a victory. And want to be the last man standing.

For Navy the sideline is a war room for their coaches and players, where the reserves are providing the esprit de corp to their team mates on the field. It also where the brain trust merge, in the form of the coaches collecting and communicating data, and using such to penetrate the weaknesses of their opponents.

And this is what I wish Hawaii would do today, too, in it’s game against Navy.

In all, and hopefully, the Warrior coaches can exude the leadership and serious war-like demeanor because it can trickle down to the players.

For the coaches they have to ingrain the kill or be killed attitude. So the team can be a winner. Coaches stomp the feet on the ground if that is what it takes. Show some toughness, which is inspiring to the players. Shed the submissiveness. And that lei, too. And give to the players what they can feed on in boosting their play. And resolve. So that they are indeed the last one standing.

And by being out foxing. And out countering. And out maneuvering, maybe in the form of being the gladiator, and slayer the Warriors can be the team the perseveres.

Enough of what I have to get off my chest.

Like every game day for the Warriors, I’ll be rooting deeply. And holed up somewhere at a Kalihi bar I’ll be watching and feeling the ups and downs on the field. The good and the bad… But gosh I just love to see the Warriors win today.

  128. Garret November 28, 2009 1:42 pm

Taking a break…great news about Oklahoma State losing! That really should make BSU *and* TCU getting a spot possible…unless something crazy happens. If Nebraska beats Texas next week,Texas would probably get an at-large bid and BSU would be left out. Otherwise, it looks like BSU will be in:

    Current BCS standings:
1/2: Florida and Alabama will both be in BCS games
3: Texas will be in a BCS game, hopefully as Big 12 champion to leave an at-large spot open.
4: TCU will be in a BCS game
5: Cinci (or Pitt) will get the Big East champion spot in a BCS game
6: BSU will most likely be an at-large BCS selection barring other upsets
7: Georgia Tech (or Clemson) will get the ACC champion spot in a BCS game
8: Oregon (or Oregon State) will get the Pac-10 champion spot in a BCS game
9: Pitt is NOT a candidate for an at-large spot in the BCS (they lost this week and if they get in it will have to be as Big East champion)
10: Ohio State will get the Big 10 champion spot in the Rose Bowl
11: Iowa (or Penn State) could be an at-large selection
12: Oklahoma State lost today and will not be in a BCS game
    13: Penn State (see Iowa)
14: Virginia Tech is doubtful to be picked over BSU due to having 3 losses.
15: LSU is not eligible for the BCS
16: Oregon State will go as Pac-10 champion or not at all

In summary, there are 4 at-large spots for BCS bowls.
    TCU
    The Florida/Alabama loser
    BSU
    Iowa or Penn State

If Nebraska beats Texas, then BSU will compete with Iowa and Penn State for the final BCS spot.

  131. Momona November 28, 2009 2:40 pm

I think Pitt has a better chance of upsetting Cincinnati than Nebraska has of Texas. If either happens, I think Boise is out.

We could possibly have 4 undefeated teams this year – National Championship winner, TCU, Cincinnati and Boise. And only one 1-loss team in the country – the National Championship loser.

When was the last time we had that many undefeated teams in one year?

  132. Bulla November 28, 2009 3:45 pm

    aloha Tsaikos from Williamsburg,
wow, we got thumped today, and the better team won. 1st quarter was great 0-0 and holding our own….then the floodgates opened up……W&M are good, don’t get me wrong, but they are not as overpowering as the score indicates. 4 INT’s with 2 back to the house, 2 missed FG’s, dropped passes……a long day for the ‘Cats.

The Beast represented well, 4 tackles and 2 QB hurries against the double/triple team assignments he drew. He went down in the 4th quarter with a sprained ankle….but he was done for the day. Better days ahead, and congrats to W&M.

    Now…….IMUA WARRIORS!!!

Maybe on the first defensive play our entire front D-line should jump the gun and plow the Mid-shipmen’s o-line. As soon as they start to sway before the ball is hiked … PLOW! Take two or three penalties while Navy is still in their own territory. Shake them up a bit. Then wait for the snap.

My California adversaries all today told me Navy will POUND us by 21 points as there 8-3 record is NO FLUKE and they execute long drives and their running game like Miami Dolphins of old Larry Csonka and Jim Kick.

All I want Hawaii to do is to COMPETE and not get blown as Navy local coach who has done good on the national scene is SERIOUS about winning in Hawaii and in front of a large contingent of Hawaii faithfuls who believe in Coach Nanatololo !

Come on WARRIRORS ! Rise to the occasion and come out with a BIG win as then 1 game will remain for a rags to riches story with this team of DESTINY !

Halftime. 17-17. Warriors get the ball to start the second half.

  176. jaysson November 28, 2009 6:52 pm

Im just wondering why the compliance office waited so long on Satele. They should have initiated it if they could and had it done before he graduates. The way I understand it the NCAA has 30 days to make their decisions. WTF is wrong with the compliance office.

Good job by Moniz. Nice to see they can play well when they need to now.

  177. madeinhawaii November 28, 2009 6:53 pm

Wish we went in with a lead.. but 17-17 against a solid Navy team isn’t bad. Now our Warriors gotta change their 3rd quarter stats! pile up the TD’s… show the nation, the Warriors have Arrived!

    Warriors IMUA!

  178. Konaboy November 28, 2009 6:56 pm

Matt agreed. Just wished our O could have capitalized on all those Navy 3 & outs in the first qtr. We need all the help we can get going into the second half because of our inability to score in 3rd qtrs. I think Moniz had to clear the cobwebs a bit.

I think the D has played as well as we could have expected against this Navy offense. You can see Navy adjusted after the first qtr. and the chess game is definitely on.

Great 1st half of football. Now our boys need put in the end-zone when we get it back in the 2nd half.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  179. jaysson November 28, 2009 6:57 pm

Its been an unpredictable day in the NCAA. I would have picked Idaho over Utah State, Weber State got creamed by William and Mary in the first round of the FCS championships, unranked BCS teams beating BCS teams, Georgia over Georgia Tech, Oklahoma over OK State and the blowout by Mississippi State over Old Miss….list goes on.

    Thats why I love football.

  180. madeinhawaii November 28, 2009 7:05 pm

I like how Moniz took control of the clock… didn’t even need that last timeout.

  181. postmanke November 28, 2009 7:05 pm

I can honestly say we have more talent than those Navy guys.

  182. wafan November 28, 2009 7:05 pm

    Go Warriors!

  183. madeinhawaii November 28, 2009 7:08 pm

I like that Moniz connected with Pilares and Taylor for a couple of long ones. Looks like he’s getting that stroke on the long ones. Might just change the complexion of the 3rd Qtr.

  184. Matt November 28, 2009 7:08 pm

NEED to score in the 3rd quarter to win this one.

  185. Matt November 28, 2009 7:16 pm

What looked like a bad punt by Dunnachie takes a great Warrior bounce and is downed at the 1.

  186. Matt November 28, 2009 7:24 pm

    Big stop by the D.

  187. Matt November 28, 2009 7:25 pm

Come on offense. We need to score a TD on this drive.

  188. Committed Road Warrior November 28, 2009 7:25 pm

Reciprocating five-minute drives by both teams leading to punts to kick off the second half.

At this pace, it’s gonna be another goose-egg for 3rd quarter scoring just by nature of the pace of the game.

  189. Matt November 28, 2009 7:33 pm

TD Warriors. We score in the 3rd quarter!

  190. Oh my! November 28, 2009 7:34 pm

Way to power into the end zone. Moniz looks real good

  191. Matt November 28, 2009 7:34 pm

PAT is good 24-17 Warriors on a pass to Alex Green out of the backfield.

  192. Matt November 28, 2009 7:36 pm

Funaki with the special teams tackle to stop the Navy returner at the 15.

  193. jm2375 November 28, 2009 7:38 pm

GO WARRIORS!!! Good job so far! KEEP IT UP!

  194. Konaboy November 28, 2009 7:38 pm

That was an AWESOME, AWESOME drive. Really dominating. O-line was superb!!. Also our first 3rd qtr where we outscored the opponent! Go D!! continue the lockdown!

    GO Warriors!!

  195. madeinhawaii November 28, 2009 7:38 pm

    That was Funaki???!!!

    All right! Inoke!

The 3rd Qtr curse has been broken!! let’s open up the 4th Qtr…

  196. UHfan808 November 28, 2009 7:38 pm

Awesome that we scored in the 3rd quarter.

    Proud of you Warriors!

    Geev um!

  197. Oh my! November 28, 2009 7:39 pm

Special teams are playing very well. We’ve had the field position advantage most of the game.

  198. Matt November 28, 2009 7:42 pm

    Defense needs to stay disciplined.

  199. Matt November 28, 2009 7:43 pm

Come on 12th man. Make some noise.

  200. UHfan808 November 28, 2009 7:43 pm

Hello, how u Tsaikos n Tsaikettes, Lurkers n Lurkettes!?

    Hope all is well!

Warriors playing guud and not giving up!

    Awesome awesome awesome

keep doing keep doing doing doing

  201. Matt November 28, 2009 7:44 pm

That was definitely Inoke. I even had to rewind it on DVR since I was surprised too.

  202. Konaboy November 28, 2009 7:44 pm

Yep best field position advantage I’ve seen in a Hawaii game in a long time.

  203. Oh my! November 28, 2009 7:46 pm

    stuffed!

  204. Matt November 28, 2009 7:46 pm

Defense is fired up. Navy to punt.

  205. Oh my! November 28, 2009 7:47 pm

nice long drive now, ending with some points

  206. UHfan808 November 28, 2009 7:48 pm

lol I’m over here cheering (screaming yelling) and clapping (loudly) lol

    whooooohooooooo!

    GO WARRRRIIIIOOOORRRRRSSSS!!!!

  207. Konaboy November 28, 2009 7:48 pm

Touch back!! Oh man what I would give for another TD here 🙂

  208. Matt November 28, 2009 7:49 pm

Come on Mo. Lets get another TD and keep the MO-mentum.

  209. Committed Road Warrior November 28, 2009 7:51 pm

This has been a well-played game by both teams so far.

Minimal penalties overall, not a whole lot of big plays given up by the UH D. UH is giving the Navy O yards here and there but stopping them when they need to.

Can’t complain too much about this match.

  210. Matt November 28, 2009 7:52 pm

Looks like we are using LWJ to run the ball and run down the clock.

  211. Oh my! November 28, 2009 7:52 pm

keep the chains and the clock moving

  212. Konaboy November 28, 2009 7:53 pm

    Ground and Pound baby!!

  213. postmanke November 28, 2009 7:53 pm

these long drives are awesome. we’re beating them down..

  214. Matt November 28, 2009 7:57 pm

Navy stops us on 4th down. We should have gone under center. What the heck? We could have easily got it on a QB sneak.

  215. postmanke November 28, 2009 7:57 pm

the defenese has got to shut this drive down! new defensive scheme is a gem!

  216. Konaboy November 28, 2009 7:58 pm

not sure why on 4th and 1/2 a yard we are in a shotgun formation. mind boggling

  217. Oh my! November 28, 2009 7:59 pm

our D is rested and is gonna shut em down again

  218. Matt November 28, 2009 8:01 pm

With our O-line so much bigger than the Navy D-Line and an All American candidate at center, we should never had gone into the shotgun on that 4th down and less than a yard. Really bad play call by Mac/Ron/Rolo. Come on D, let’s get another big stop.

  219. Oh my! November 28, 2009 8:01 pm

    Blaze

  220. TChahng [오키나와] November 28, 2009 8:02 pm

  221. Matt November 28, 2009 8:03 pm

Come on DEFENSE. We need a stop right now.

  222. UHfan808 November 28, 2009 8:05 pm

    DE-FENSE DE-FENSE!!!

  223. Matt November 28, 2009 8:06 pm

    DEFENSE… DEFENSE…DEFENSE!!! Come on D. Sink Navy.

  224. Oh my! November 28, 2009 8:06 pm

    great stopby Bryant

  225. Matt November 28, 2009 8:07 pm

Wow. Best game of the season and by far the best 3rd quarter. Congratulations to the guys for a great — almost perfect– defensive effort and an excellent offensive game plan, especially for how they controlled the ball in the 2nd half.

  241. Hawaiiroller November 28, 2009 8:12 pm

Yes baby!!! Let’s fill the place next week.

Good luck Kenny and Ivin. 🙂

Way to go Warriors, never say never.

    GREAT WIN!

The great weakness of the triple option is when you get behind, it is hard to rally.

  245. Garret November 28, 2009 8:12 pm

Updating the stat. This was a GREAT time for UH to win the third quarter!

3rd quarter scoring this season against D-IA competition:
    UH 0, Washington State 7
    UH 0, UNLV 7
    UH 0, La Tech 14
    UH 0, Idaho 7
    UH 0, Fresno State 14
    UH 2, BSU 10
    UH 0, Nevada 7
UH 7, Utah State 14 (not counting the TD to start the 4th quarter and I’m glad they missed another TD when their QB missed the wide open WR)
    UH 0, NMSU 6
    UH 0, SJSU 0
    UH 7, Navy 0!!!

Total is now 86-16 against D-IA competition.

    chaaaa h0o0o0o000o00oooooo00000!!!!

  247. NYUH November 28, 2009 8:14 pm

Awesome win. Nice performance by Moniz and especially the OL.

  248. Matt November 28, 2009 8:14 pm

I hope my neighbors don’t call the cops after that big sack to end the game by Blaze. What a game by the defense. They just did what all of those 5 star recruits including Manti Teo couldn’t, stop Navy. I hope Gordie Shaw has some tricks to stop the Wisconsin running game. Next game is Senior night. There will be a good sized crowd.

  249. madeinhawaii November 28, 2009 8:16 pm

Warriors kept Navy out of scoring distance for the entire second half.. can you believe it? OUTSTANDING!!!

    Way To Go WARRIORS!!! WHOOOTAH!!!

Awesome finish up job too, Warriors!

  257. Konaboy November 28, 2009 8:20 pm

Could the game have ended any better? Way to go Blaze! Except for the 4 and 1/2 to go on that last UH drive I thought this was a very well coached game. Looks like the Moniz lead warriors have arrived. Job well done by everyone. Who would have thunk we would have still been playing for a bowl game on the final game of the season……

  258. Ronnie November 28, 2009 8:20 pm

Aaron had to remind me that it is after 10 here… I may have lost my voice. 🙂 !

  259. Da Punchbowl Kid November 28, 2009 8:23 pm

A defensive gem! Offense looks great too, we shoulda had more points. An awesome win by the Warriors!

  260. Committed Road Warrior November 28, 2009 8:24 pm

    Ronnie:

It’s after 1:30am out here. I should be going to sleep but I’m still amped up about the win!

Do we have a chance against Wisconsin? If we play like tonight, yes. The Badgers will still be favored though, but things can happen on any given Saturday…..

  261. madeinhawaii November 28, 2009 8:25 pm

    6 all…

    next week .. Wisconsin..
    Wisconsin is ranked #17

Next week is a “Bowl Game”!

Win that one and the Hawaii Bowl will be pure entertainment with JJ’s SMU and our Warriors.

  262. wafan November 28, 2009 8:31 pm

Did Navy surrender on Mighty MO’s and the D’s skills?

  263. Ronnie November 28, 2009 8:32 pm

CRW – I hear you there!

And I agree that if we play a complete game next week like we did this week, we have a great chance.

  264. RedZone November 28, 2009 8:33 pm

Great game and win Warriors. I think the UH D did better against Navy than Ohio State did. Moniz is a winner. The way he managed the end of the first half looked like he has been doing it for years.

How is Leon? Looked like he got hurt and took himself out of the game.

  265. wafan November 28, 2009 8:34 pm

Hmmmmm. I wonder what Sailor Blue will look like at the Wisconsin T-Gate? I sure hope there are lots of pix!

Tonight’s post T-Gate is going to be loud and ugly (for Sailor Blue).

    Bravissimo, Warriors!

  266. jm2375 November 28, 2009 8:37 pm

  267. madeinhawaii November 28, 2009 8:43 pm

  272. wafan November 28, 2009 9:00 pm

Geez. The people are out complaining about the one questionable call by the coaches. Why can they not simply celebrate the win? What do they have to gain by second-guessing the decision? If they were that brilliant they would be on the field.

  273. Cheyah! November 28, 2009 9:00 pm

Thank you Warriors for making my Thanksgiving complete. Bring on the next victim!

  276. LOL® November 28, 2009 9:04 pm

Had an unholy HUGE appetite since I fasted and did not have any turkey the last 2 days in hopes that I could be feasting on lot of crow and mynah today!

Mmmmmm, munch, munch, munch…. didn’t think crow and mynah could taste so friggin onolish!

I called out Kia for falling flat on his face in San-Ho and will give props where props is due. He did a good job this evening and answered his critics. Defense played assignment football really well against the option and answered the call when they needed to at the end of the game. I did say a few days ago that I felt we had a good chance in this game because we had the speed, size, and talent. While we only won by a TD, this game should have been a blowout if our offense didn’t sputter early on as we had Navy’s number and held them in check enough. Clock management was lights out (loved how we chewed up time.) The coaches did an excellent job for the most part with the game plan and adjustments. The wasted two time outs in the first half and going for it on 4th and 1 at the Navy 16 can be excused because Moniz’ 2-minute drive made up for the timeouts and the defense was playing so well that McMackin was leaving it in their hands; plus with Enos’ troubles, 3 points was not a gimme. Plus going for it showed signs that we weren’t playing conservative and were going for the jugular. I personally liked that since it showed guts.

Congratulations to the coaches and the team for getting that signature win against a very good and well coached team like Navy. This is the kind of effort (giving it all 4 quarters) many of us have been wanting to see each game especially against the better ones who ended up blowing us out in our own stadium. We need a similar effort next week and after todays game, I feel much more confident that we’ll have a solid game plan in place and we won’t just let Wiscy run all over us.

P.S. Did anyone else think Coach McMackin looked REALLY S-E-X-Y and godlike with his tan today? That man would look good in speedos doing an adonis pose while holding a football in one hand and a UH Warrior helmet in the other. Ron Lee could do the same thing except holding manapuas in each hand. The coaches should put out a beefcake calendar next season with this theme which I’m sure our female fans will really appreciate. All non-believers who don’t think this to be even remotely true need to go visit an optometrist pronto on Monday.

  277. jm2375 November 28, 2009 9:16 pm

Da announcers did a decent job with all da Polynesian names, even Rocky’s…
    😆

  278. jm2375 November 28, 2009 9:17 pm

Hey LOL, glad you like crow!

Hey, any update from the postgame t-gate? Is Sailor Blue there or did he slink away?

  279. RedZone November 28, 2009 9:18 pm

Eating mynah is against the law.

  280. Matt November 28, 2009 9:19 pm

I thought the announcers did alright, but they kept calling Blaze Soares “Blake”.

  281. wafan November 28, 2009 9:22 pm

    LOL . . .

    Use a lot of gravy!

I was feeling good about the win tonight. Now, why did you have to plant that mind picture of the coaches in Speedo’s?

    Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

  282. OldDiver November 28, 2009 9:23 pm

If we are going to criticize the UH coaches for one call then we may as well criticize Navy’s coaches for their poorly run two minute offense. No question in my mind that our coaches out coached Navy’s coaches on defense on offense and on special teams.

  283. Nalani November 28, 2009 9:33 pm

Congrats to our Warriors!!!! Huge win. Awesome team.

  284. madeinhawaii November 28, 2009 9:35 pm

Anybody hear what the attendance was ?

  285. RedZone November 28, 2009 9:37 pm

I thought UH coaches did a really good job. I knew Navy was in trouble after UH scored in the 3rd quarter. And they blanked Navy in the 2nd half.

  286. djmitcho November 28, 2009 9:38 pm

Great win for the Warriors! I enjoyed watching that one tonight. It made the Beef Curry and rice taste that much better tonight.

Sww you a bit later today.

    Way to Go Warriors!

  294. FloridaTed November 28, 2009 9:55 pm

This was by far the most diciplined, well coached and executed game of the year. Shutting out Navy in the second half, who would have thunk?

And all this despite the offense sputtering on occasion. It’s amazing, considering the point we came from. Nobody can question anymore, after all those injuries, that we have quite a bit of young (and old) talent and our coaches really getting their mojo together. It seems that today, Coach Mack got his see legs under him

Now, once we’ve beaten Wisconsin, I’m really looking forward to next year.

  295. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 28, 2009 9:58 pm

Awesome game, congrats to the team for the win! 1 more to go.

I give this game an A+++ for entertainment. Best game this entire season.

  296. PowderPuff November 28, 2009 9:59 pm

On this Thanksgiving weekend, I am thankful for DVR…am thoroughly enjoying watching the final 5 minutes on the DVR. What a game…congratulations Warriors! Blaze is a beast…awesome!

  297. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 28, 2009 10:13 pm

On the down side….Do the coaches know that a field goal = 3 points for us?

32/33 yards out WITH THE WIND AT OUR BACKS and we still try and go for it instead of making it a 2 possession game with 5 minutes to go and 2 timeout for Navy……..(O_o)

Don’t get me wrong, it may be so insanely genius of a strategy that for face value it seems ridiculous….but I doubt it.

I was listening to the coach talk after the game with Bobby and Robert and *I THINK* it was Mack who said “Well what if we went for the field goal and missed?” (correct me if it was another caller, pretty sure it was Coach Mack though)….Ummmm I am not too sure where the ball ended up on the play but wouldn’t it leave us in the exact same spot?…..

This is something that’s been bothering me for the past few games….its just so illogical that I have a hard time trying to understand it.

I really don’t want to take away from the win…the team deserves it and this issue is NOT THE TEAMS/PLAYERS FAULT whatsoever…its purely a Coaches decision and in my opinion and absurd one. The players played their butts off and I tip my hat to them for putting up the big stops when they needed and going above and beyond what anyone expected from them!! 🙂

Annnnyway ending on a positive note…we have a really tough team to beat next week but riding the wave of success will surely give us a chance to get to that final win and the bowl invite! GO WARRIORS!!

  298. Garret November 28, 2009 10:15 pm

I like the way that Ken Niumatalolo talked about UH’s win.

“It was a great game, it was a great battle. Most of our games are like this. You’ve got to give Hawai‘i credit. They made enough plays there at the end and were able to pull out a victory. I thought our kids battled; our guys played hard, too, but (Hawai‘i) made maybe a few more plays than we did.”

“(Hawai‘i) had a nice plan, the kids executed well. I’m not going to make excuses. We’ve got to give them credit. I wish we could have played better, did better than how we did, but give Hawai‘i credit.”

“The crowd definitely played a factor. We got a little frazzled there, didn’t execute any of our stuff very well, we didn’t get things set.”

  299. OldDiver November 28, 2009 10:21 pm

“Absurd” more properly explains invading Iraq looking for non-existent WMD’s. Going for it on 4th down instead of kicking a FG is a coaching decision during a football game, and nothing more.

  300. garret November 28, 2009 10:26 pm

Here is the AP story on the game. I like this quote from Moniz, who wasn’t quoted in the UH release.

“Our team has just gelled so much, and come even closer every week,” Moniz said. “We’re on this streak and this roll and our fans are behind us. It’s a great feeling and it’s awesome.”

  301. LizKauai (iPhone) November 28, 2009 10:28 pm

in the end the defense saved the coach once again. (two games in a row)

  303. al November 28, 2009 10:31 pm

if they were going to go for it then they should have gone under center and followed estes and hisatake. i am sure that the 60 pound advantage per lineman would have weighed out at least a half a yard.

  304. FloridaTed November 28, 2009 10:31 pm

Going on fourth and a half yard to go was right, only the play called was silly, should have been under center and closer to the line of scrimmage,

With our O-Line should have been easy, oh, well, who cares now anyways, only the nit-pickers,

  305. Garret November 28, 2009 10:32 pm

I’m impressed how the Navy players do not make excuses. It sounds like a reporter asked Dobbs is if the long trip was a factor in the loss and he refused to make excuses.

Dobbs wouldn’t blame the comfortable island climate or the long trip from Annapolis.

“We had to come out and do it no matter if we had to travel 7,000 miles and play the next day it just comes down to execution. There is no excuse,” Dobbs said.

  306. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 28, 2009 10:43 pm

    olddiver,

absurd is going for it on 4th and inches inside the 35…

its absurd…oops i said it again.

going into iraq to find non existent WMD’s = insane.

its nice that u have this obsession with semantics…we all need a hobby 🙂

  307. gmahoney November 28, 2009 10:46 pm

I was impressed by our defense of the option, the punting was awesome, our offense was awesome, what’s to complain about? Going for it on 4th and 1? Geez, enjoy the win!

  308. madeinhawaii November 28, 2009 10:48 pm

The only negative with this win, insofar as I can see, is that Wisconsin is not going to take the Warriors for granted…. shucks…

  309. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 28, 2009 10:51 pm

    Floridated,

I have to respectfully disagree with you on this one. We are inside the 35 *with* the wind behind us…a field goal gives us a 10 point lead. That is basically a 2 score game….

A little over 5 minutes to go Navy would have to score a TD, then do an onside, then make a field goal to tie or TD to win…Again all under 5 minutes using the time eating triple option with 1 timeout left.

We give up the ball as we did and in 5 minutes with 1 TO left could conceivably make a TD and PAT for the tie or go brass out and go for 2 for the win.

You miss the field goal your in the same place you started…you miss the “run up the middle” and you never had a chance for points and you turn the ball over…

You go for the 3 and make it you leave it up to your defense to hold them from scoring 2x…

Again we won so in the end its all that matters but it still makes me wonder what the rationale was.

  310. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 28, 2009 11:00 pm

I don’t think its “nitpicking” unless we believe that there isn’t room for improvement and we should be content with everything from now on. I personally don’t think that way, maybe some do and thats cool.

I’m not ripping the win or the players (they really did well). I am simply questioning what the coaches were thinking and the risk/reward analysis that was made.

The first thing Tiger Woods does after he wins a tournament is figure out what he did wrong and how he can improve……..seems to be working for him.

  311. d1島 November 28, 2009 11:00 pm

    Terrific game!

Hats off to the team: players and coaches.

Aloha and Mahalo to the Midshipmen…you have, you did and you will continue to represent your country well.

Long day…I’ll catch up on the posts tomorrow.

    A very Tsatisfied Oyasumina-tsai 🙂

  312. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 28, 2009 11:12 pm

    #311 edit

I realized I didnt add this part.

Ok so lets say we made the first down AND the TD….it STILL comes out to a 2 score game….but risking the turnover on downs w/o going for a shot at the endzone.

so with a FG you are trying FOR points….with the play we called we were trying NOT for points but rather just the opportunity to score again and the 1st down.

OK…im done with this subject. hahaha.

  313. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 28, 2009 11:18 pm

    #77 Kia,

nice to see a penalty-free game today. good job!

  314. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 28, 2009 11:21 pm

#315…forgot about the holding penalty. still a lot better over last weeks performance so im happy.

  315. OldDiver November 28, 2009 11:22 pm

    iwonderwhytheyhateme

Coaches, players all do things that fans can complain about. You speak as if only you are all knowing. Only you know what is right. It’s OK to believe they should have kicked the FG. It is equally OK to believe they should have gone for it. It is OK to believe they should have run a different play. Making insulting remarks that are aimed at the coaches intelligence is not OK. Just so we understand each other, OK?

  316. chopsueyboy November 28, 2009 11:24 pm

What a game to enjoy at the stadium,
    back to work,
now time to go home and watch game on dvr
and make copy for son (azngamer808) in Seattle

Great game Warriors! Enjoy the win. Get a good night sleep.
Then start preparing for the Badgers

  317. lil's November 28, 2009 11:44 pm

hi all. i think we played it right. navy has shown this and previous years their ability to come back while being down in the 4th. they’ve recovered onside kicks numerous of times. with that being said, going for it was something nobody expected. i believe it threw everybody off including the navy coaches. even with us not making it, they may have been shocked, not ready with the proper game plan. put that in with our D playing its best game of the year gave us that edge that we needed to win.

  318. Kazz (blkberry_storm) November 28, 2009 11:48 pm

Coach Mack got on the PA after the alma maters (both UH and Navy showed equal respect to each other’s alma maters) and implored that “WE PLAY FOR YOU” and he said “we’ll see you all next week”.

Great win. Everything that has been said has been said.

Now, what to do about Wisconsin?

I know they’ll provide the cheese, but seeing as they’re from the Big 10, will they provide the “whine” also? 🙄

  319. Kazz (blkberry_storm) November 28, 2009 11:54 pm

Good to see Greg Salas’ parents stop by the tailgate afterwards.

Also spak’d Geordon Hanohano with some family and friends after the g,e. Was at a gas station when they pulled up in front of the mini mart. Had to shake the kid’s hand. Braddah had a smile from ear to ear. Nice to share some laughs with his dad to. Used to chat with him during fall practice. Nice family Geordon has there!

  321. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 29, 2009 12:14 am

    Olddiver,

If you thought that “absurd” is a derogatory term that meant to insult or demean the coaches then that’s unfortunate, ok? I particularly don’t find the coaches or the coaching absurd, ok? In fact the coaching tonight w/ respect to halftime adjustments and defense were probably the best we had all season, ok? The CALL ITSELF was ABSURD, ok? If that’s demeaning then, slap on the handcuffs, I’m guilty as charged, ok?

I don’t remember saying or even implying I was all knowing so where that comes from I have no idea, ok?

I made a rational and logical argument as to why a FG would be better than going for a 1st down…2 touchdowns and its a 2 possession game…1TD and 1FG and its STILL a 2 possession game…ok? Just so that we are clear…OK?

    Thanks

  322. WarriorChick November 29, 2009 12:16 am

Does anyone know if tonight’s game will be replayed tomorrow?

  323. oldie November 29, 2009 12:54 am

    WarriorChick,

ESPNU (219) has games at 7:30 pm and 10:00 pm listed as TBA. I would guess that these are rebroadcasts. They probably pick the most entertaining games. Maybe they’ll do the UH-Navy game. Just a guess.

  324. oldie November 29, 2009 1:04 am

There’s also more games early Monday morning and beyond that may be rebroadcasts on ESPNU.

    WooHoo!!! GO WARRIORS!!!

  326. royvic November 29, 2009 1:53 am

When the game was over a lot of us, I imagine, were choked with emotion. And felt the trickle of tears of happiness running down the sides of our faces. It was a savoring moment, especially to see the look of deserved happiness on Coach Mack’s face. A vintage moment in this season of odyssey for sure. And a moment to blossom from. To the coaches and team keep uncorking it. And keep it flowing. Nice win.

  327. oldie November 29, 2009 2:10 am

How appropriate after a nice win against a good Navy team, the oldie “Anchors Aweigh” starring Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly on HTCM right now.

  328. 99club November 29, 2009 4:15 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

What a great game last night. Nice to read quote above about the fans affecting the game. Here’s hoping for a bigger turnout next week!

BTW, anybody notice the clock was rollin’ several times when it should have been stopped for first downs and out-of-bounds plays? Check out the replay of Navy’s last drive when the receiver makes a great catch (his only catch of the season) on the sideline for a first down. He didn’t make it out of bounds, but it was a first down. I also thought there were a couple plays in the third qtr when we had the ball on the winning drive that the clock should have been stopped. I just hate to give more fodder to the urban legend about officiating in Hawaii.

Good Morning Tsaiko Nation, What a GREAT game as Blaze say’s it so well “balls to the walls” with ONE BIG game left for all the marbles !

This team is FINALLY on a roll and I can’t say enough about your BIG time players stepping up Salas, Blaze, Silva, ENOS (Yee Haw !) Kealoha and I feel a SUPERSTAR on the making in quaterback Moniz who is going to make us LOVE him the same manner we loved Colt.

Moniz is BRILLANT with his quickness, accurate arm and quick feet to flee the pocket and turn on the after burners ! He reminds me so much of Randal Cunningham as this young sophomore will only get better as we have him 2 more years running the offense with confidence, GREAT poise and athletic ability !

Neighbors down the street was shouting “WARRIORS” as they walked by my loft as I gave them nice cold Heinekens in celebrating a GREAT win !

Now we need to take care of some badger cheese as that game will be rocking in Aloha Stadium as I anticipate 45,000 screaming Hawaii fans going ALL out for what will be the GAME of the year with holding nothing back !

I am off to play my tennis, DESTROY them in Magic’s and wear my Hawaii gear ALL over South Bay in Honor of our boys and coaches who STEPPED IT UP and made this season a “rags to riches” story with ONE BIG ONE left !

Let’s GO Hawaii, Let’s Go Tsaiko Nation as I am with you ALL the way with all my Tsaiko Ohana here in Southern California (Garret, Ronnie, Rich2176, Hawslin, Tombu and Rainbow ‘Legend” Cliff !

    I MUA WARRIORS !

The bannah is “PRICELESS” as I would be HONOR to have it on my shoulders when our paths meet again Oh Great One Of Obie One Kanobe Big Hilo Fan Fame SIR !

Always the BEST as I am fired up like our boys last night to kick some okole this morning with my Yannick Noah / Charles Barkley ATHLETIC game !

Just want to add my congratulations to the players, coaches, & staff for their TEAM play, on the practice field and on game day – leading to a terrific TEAM victory vs. Navy. I’m still buzzing with excitement especially seeing the tremendous discipline by the D- – the line was awesome (DE’s !!!), the LB play was excellent, and the edge support was outstanding! Hurrah!!! 😆

  341. wafan November 29, 2009 6:10 am

Cool to see the tradition of the whites standing during the game! Hawai’i fans need to refine some of their traditions. Perhaps a good first one would be to not be a bandwagon jumper?

One of my neighbors is retired Navy. The other neighbor is active Army (secret kind of stuff). Anyhow, there were two houses on the lane cheering for Hawai’i and one house in agony.

Next week, I am not taking sides in that game.

  346. mctruck November 29, 2009 6:15 am

I would have breathed more easily if UH would have gone for a short field goal at (4th and 1). I think that would have really put a nail in the coffin so to speak. But then again, that wouldn’t have made the last,(4:51) as exciting as it was.

Hope everyone enjoyed the game as I did…..looking foward to the last game against Wisconsin.

  347. βρεω808 November 29, 2009 6:16 am

I don’t believe the attendance figures. I could see plenty of orange on the sideline seats, and the endzones were their usual half full. I would have guessed low 30’s – but of course 😥 I wasn’t there to count in person…. 🙁 😥

  348. wafan November 29, 2009 6:16 am

    Brew . . .

    Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! Nice.

Hard to say what the coaches were thinking; but, there had to be a reason for the decision. We may never know — unless Slugger goes to the Na Koa lunch and asks the all important question, “What the heck were you thinking on 4th and one manapua?!?!”

Above, Mr. Tsai predicted the game would be one for the offenses. Seems it was a game for Hawai’i’s defense.

  360. βρεω808 November 29, 2009 6:33 am

Okay – let’s be honest! Navy didn’t bring much team speed to the game – especially on the edges on the D. That’s why the short safely outlet passes and bubble screens clicked. (IMHO) I’m glad the coaches picked that up and utilized those plays in the 2nd half. 😀

Ummmm…. the RB’s had a lot of trouble picking up the pass rushers that came free of stunts or delayed blitzes. That continues to need work. The result was Moniz had to resort to the quick passes and nothing down the middle, or long (no time). Also nice to see Chizzy used late in the game as another option. Eh – if no block, then use as a target/option. Again – IMHO. 😀

  361. βρεω808 November 29, 2009 6:36 am

    only one turnover! 😀

  365. Garret November 29, 2009 6:42 am

Kids woke up early today so I finished the quotes from the game already.

  366. βρεω808 November 29, 2009 6:44 am

ESPNU coverage was pretty good. The announcers had spent some time practicing the names. The one that bugged me was Wahiawa. I like the sideline shots of players – especially the IR ones. My only complaint is the availability of ESPNU….. (Thanks Justin!) 😆

  367. Garret November 29, 2009 6:44 am

“I could count on one hand how many times we repped it (in practice),” said UH defensive line coach Dave Aranda, who made most of the defensive calls. “They majored in that (formation) in this game.”

    ST,

This part of your article surprised me. Cal Lee is the defensive coordinator and Mack is the head coach who controls the defense…but Dave Aranda is making the calls on defense now? Has that always been the case or have things changed? This didn’t seem to be the case earlier this season.

  368. βρεω808 November 29, 2009 6:45 am

I missed it – but did UH win the coin-toss and defer – or was that the only thing Navy won last night? 🙄

  369. 808ike November 29, 2009 6:46 am

    Brew,

The “D” did a great job on the pitch out. Would guess the total yardage
for those plays were (-) yards.

  370. Garret November 29, 2009 6:46 am

    brew808,

In some places, ESPNU is available in HD….the sad thing is that the HD channel has apparently been on the Dish satellites for months and they haven’t flipped the switch (or signed the contract) to get the HD channel on Dish.

  371. βρεω808 November 29, 2009 6:47 am

Yeah – that one (Aranda) caught my attention too. 😯

  372. Garret November 29, 2009 6:48 am

The D did an EXCELLENT job on the pitch play. They also did a great job on the FB except for a play or two. The play that hurt the D was Navy’s adjustment when Dobbs followed the QB or went off tackle on a delay. However, UH’s D adjusted to that too.

  373. βρεω808 November 29, 2009 6:50 am

Happy to see Pollard return to the game. Was he in the rotation or did he replace a player that had a drop? 😐

  374. βρεω808 November 29, 2009 6:54 am

Ricky Dobbs is a magician! Those two long gains were right up the middle and a lot of it due to the tricky ball handling by Mr. Dobbs. Hey – but that’s the option. (Hmmmm… that poster is sort of quiet this AM) 😀

  375. βρεω808 November 29, 2009 6:56 am

I was impressed by the fire and emotion by Coach Niumatalolo on the sidelines. Wow – not the quiet, polite persona you see during the interviews. Good for him – and Navy!!! 😀

  376. 808ike November 29, 2009 6:58 am

    Brew,

Posting is slow because a lot of brewing after the game. Saw a lot
    of green bottles.

  377. βρεω808 November 29, 2009 6:59 am

The long snap in 3Q was catchable. Too bad as that could have help decide the game a bit earlier…. 😐

  378. βρεω808 November 29, 2009 7:01 am

Had the outcome been different…. would there have been more blue empties strewn about? I don’t think so…. 🙄 😀 😆

  379. βρεω808 November 29, 2009 7:02 am

Where was the goat? Did the Tsaikos have a BBQ? ….j/k 😆

  380. Jason November 29, 2009 7:07 am

It’s my understanding that Aranda has been making defensive calls as far back as the WSU game. I’m sure Mack, Cal, and Aranda work together to game plan, but Aranda is the one in the booth with the best vantage point.

  381. KonaGold November 29, 2009 7:07 am

Congratulations to the Warriors for their great victory, it was the best offensive and defensive game of the season, although we only scored 24 points, we controlled the clock and kept Navy’s offense on the sidelines. Soares played his finest game as a UH Warrior, when it counted most. Also a shout out to Linfied Wildcats for making it into the quarterfinals next week. also congrats to Ryan “The Beast” Eastman for making honorable mention for the second consecutive despite the limited amount of games, due to injuries.

  382. βρεω808 November 29, 2009 7:08 am

Seemed like there were a few non-calls for UH – the hold on Salas at the 4yd line, a couple rocking snaps by the Navy-O, the running clock (mentioned earlier by 99). Otherwise, and pretty good officiated game. Where was this crew from? 😕 😀

  383. βρεω808 November 29, 2009 7:15 am

Because my seats are in the orange in the north endzone, it’s hard to tell how much of the sidelines are full. However, over the years, one can tell how much are at the game by looking upwards into the yellow.

I’d say it was a packed house, in comparison to all other home games this year.

So, the 36,000 figure seems somewhat accurate to me.

    Sounded like 60,000 though.

AGAIN, PROPS TO THOSE THAT HAVE ALWAYS BEEN THERE, AND A NICE “WHERE THE **** WHERE YOU ALL YEAR LONG” TO THE SLACKERS THAT SHOWED UP.

Yeah you made noise, but whatever… 🙄

    Bottom-line (from this fan….repeated for emphasis…and format corrections 😀 ) –

I’m hoping for this (steady improvement) to continue next week vs. the cheesy ones. Hey, if it’s a W (a WIN – not a wishconsheen) they terrific. A second bowl game would be awesome for the Seniors. But whatever the case – THIS is the BOWL GAME for our Seniors! 😆

    Good morning Brew-

I enjoyed seeing your creativity in your postings! Truly the Master.

RE: the refs: I think they’ve been using the ‘hybrid’ crews from Pac-10 and Mountain West. Maybe we’ll see on replay. ESPNU’s schedule only shows the Clemson game for replay right now.

According to Curran/Kekaula, the rule about the clock now is except for the last two minutes of the half, for both first downs and plays where the ball carrier goes out of bounds, the clock stops only until the ball is set; then the officials start the clock up. Not sure if that’s what people saw …

    STORY TIME!!!!!!!!

So amongst the chaos of the celebration, high-5’s and some hugs were being exchanged amongst us in our RAUCKOUS section 😉 and then there was this father (late 60’s) and son (30’s)…

Never saw them before. They sat to the right of us and in all the joy… These two locals… Looked heart-broken…

No NAVY colors on them, just some non-football related clothing.

Right before the Navy alma mater played, I went to them to say “good game”. The son said “lost money”.

For all the keiki out there, this is a lesson to be learned. Jim Donovan always quotes the late Stan Sheriff in saying “people vote with their wallets”. Well they also show their true colors. Two locals, just two of probably hundreds or THOUSANDS, having no faith or at least the pride to not play the game and put their money elsewhere.

I remain DEFIANT in refusing to understand betting against the home team and getting off when we lose.

Seeing how distant the two were, I hope they lost their house.

    It’s a sad situation.

Earlier I see Wafan saying something about Hawaii traditions, well… this is a long standing one and it ONLY contributes to the bandwagon effect.

    Kazz . . .

The thing about traditions is the need for a solid and faithful fan base. Too many bandwagoneers right now. But, nothing several convincing and consecutive winning seasons would not cure.

JJ had some good ideas like the conch shells and such. Can you imagine last night if the shells were blowing during Navy’s last drive? WOW! That is the kinds of things the UH and the stadium need to look at doing because it will fire-up the crowd.

  399. Konaboy November 29, 2009 11:05 am

#330 yes I noticed it happened twice. The second time was on our last drive I think so that was in our favor, but yeah I was amazed nobody caught that.

Great post. I learned some very useful information from it. I have been struggling with an addiction myself for most of my life, so what you wrote really meant a lot to me. Visit my blog if you’d like to read more. Thanks again for this blog – it is really educational.
