Valley ball

By Stephen Tsai on October 8, 2010

FRESNO — Arrived in the Land of the Raisin Sun, California’s Central Valley.  The temperatures were in three digits through last week, when it suddenly became chilly and rainy. But it appears to be a nice day. The Warriors had a nice one-hour walk-through at Bulldog Stadium.  Now I know we’ve come a long way since the Wright Brothers, but still, this sort of plane gets me nervous. At least Robert Kekaula wasn’t on board singing La Bamba.  We’re in […]

On the move

By Stephen Tsai on October 7, 2010

After a nice practice this morning, the Warriors are off to Fresno (via Oakland).  Rodney Bradley had his first full practice in two weeks, and will start at left wideout.  Right wideout Royce Pollard has some wear and tear, but he also is expected to start. If he needs a break, then Billy Ray Stutzmann, who started in place of Bradley last week, slides over to the right side.  And there definitely will be a role for receiver Dustin Blount, […]

Where’s the love?

By Stephen Tsai on October 6, 2010

ESPN yesterday ran the weekly update on the Heisman race. It was interesting to hear the phrase “among the leaders in total offense.” That is because the current leader in total offense, Bryant Moniz, isn’t even in the discussion. But don’t blame ESPN or any other media entity across the nation. Time to point the finger at UH. The basic rule of any campaign is to start early. It would have been part of the school’s pet phrase — due […]

No Mo quarterback

By Stephen Tsai on October 5, 2010

Quarterback Bryant Moniz received an “excused absence” from today’s practice to work on a class presentation, according to head coach Greg McMackin and offensive coordinator Nick Rolovich.  Rolovich said Moniz will start in Saturday’s road game against Fresno State.  * * * * *    • The Warriors plan to give Greg Salas a few reps as a safety in 7-on-7 drills this week. Salas usually gets one rep a week to work as the middle safety in Hail Mary […]

Pilares wins WAC award

By Stephen Tsai on October 4, 2010

Kealoha Pilares, who made a school-record 18 catches in a 41-21 victory over Louisiana Tech, today was named the WAC’s Offensive Player of the Week. Pilares leads the nation in receiving yards.

Look who’s No. 1

By Stephen Tsai on October 3, 2010

Bryant Moniz is the nation’s leader in total offense, averaging 390.60 yards per game. It makes sense. The Warriors are No. 1 in total passing (430.8 yards per game). What’s more, Kealoha Pilares and Greg Salas are 1-2 in receiving yards, at 682 and 609, respectively.  * * * * *  • Remember that Rod Stewart line about “ad-libbed lines” being “well-rehearsed”? In UH’s offense, every play and option is designed for all situations. Hot read? There’s no such thing […]

Game Day: LaTech

By Stephen Tsai on October 2, 2010

Sure, Boise State is ranked No. 3 nationally, and in the WAC, UH is predicted to finish several spots below.  But none of that matters at the moment. Today is the start of the WAC season for UH, and everything that happened in the first four (non-conference) games doesn’t count. Praise? Criticism? The real answers will be revealed starting tonight. * * * * *  Gotta go with what works: UH in black pants tonight for the second week in […]

Friday musings

By Stephen Tsai on October 1, 2010

Wideout Royce Pollard is quarterback/stylist Shane Austin’s latest client.  The way it works is a teammate makes a suggestion, sometimes making an illustration, and Austin does the rest. Austin believes in working without, uh, a hair net, so it’s all freestyle, no outlines.  “You have to trust the process and go for it,” Austin said. “There’s no holding back. If you make a mistake, you can’t erase it.” Well, at least the players wear helmets. But so far, Austin’s work […]
