Valley ball

FRESNO — Arrived in the Land of the Raisin Sun, California’s Central Valley.

The temperatures were in three digits through last week, when it suddenly became chilly and rainy. But it appears to be a nice day. The Warriors had a nice one-hour walk-through at Bulldog Stadium.

2

Now I know we’ve come a long way since the Wright Brothers, but still, this sort of plane gets me nervous. At least Robert Kekaula wasn’t on board singing La Bamba.

We’re in a hotel in downtown Fresno, And if you get arrested, apparently there are ample businesses to post your bail.

In the hotel lobby, they’ve set up a mini RainBowTique. Lot of cool T-shirts, including a game day shirt featuring the UH and Fresno State helmets.

    The traveling RainBowTique store! nice!

One thing I would want to see is Hawaii using the Black pants with the white top on the road. I think the last time we saw that was when Timmy Chang was still playing. We have a winning streak with those pants…

  2. charsiubau October 8, 2010 8:27 am

i’m pretty sure we have a 1 game losing streak with the black pants and white top…we used it at LA Tech last year and got whooped

    Top Fifteen?

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

  14. Steve October 8, 2010 8:45 am

How can Braddah IZ’s song be in 5th place, when it is THE Choice amongst Directors and Producers, in Hollywood.

  15. Steve October 8, 2010 8:47 am

ST, that plane will not get off the ground if Robert K. is on it.

  16. Slugger October 8, 2010 8:57 am

    Jun Tao,

I like that uni combo, too. Hope they wear the white jerseys.

    Top Twenny! 🙂

    La Bamba?! Too funny!

  18. Ipu Man October 8, 2010 9:01 am

Can we wear black (Top and bottom) on the road?

  19. Jun Tao October 8, 2010 9:01 am

    #10

I’m pretty sure it was the Green pants that they wore in that game.

I think they haven’t used that combo of White Top with Black Bottom since changing to Under Armour. I know its too late for this game but maybe the next road game…

  20. Bulla October 8, 2010 9:01 am

    Top 20 🙂

  21. Bulla October 8, 2010 9:02 am

howzit Tsaikos here and there and everywhere…..awesome day in Hawaii Nei…..blessings to all, and a victory prayer for our Warriors!!!

  22. Markazulu October 8, 2010 9:04 am

I like all the Jersey Combinations they all look nice but if the Warriors beat them I dont care if they play them butt naked as long as we beat um haha….

  23. Michigan Warrior October 8, 2010 9:12 am

    LOL… Bail-Posting shops!!! Oh my!!!

  24. Koa-mahu October 8, 2010 9:14 am

  25. Koa-mahu October 8, 2010 9:28 am

i can be the tight end or wide receiver. heheh

  26. Markazulu October 8, 2010 9:31 am

Regarding my last post I’m gonna say I do Care haha I want them to be covered up…

But regarding the game this is a stat I found comforting Hill is 5-8 against Hawaii.

  27. Derek October 8, 2010 9:33 am

Wouldn’t it be nice if UH gets a new retro uniforms. Of course, it would be a marketing ploy, but a lot of college teams do it, such as Florida and Ohio State, just to name a couple. When is Under Armour getting some new stuff?

Is men’s basketball under contract with Under Armour? Under Bob Nash, they were going with Adidas. I know softball and baseball are under Under Armour.

I really like the dark green helmets now. It is one of the best in college football, if not the best.

  28. skycap October 8, 2010 9:34 am

    St

Doing the Fresno, Hawaii, game they will honored VICTOR PEREZ the hero that saved the 8,

    year-old-girl who was kidnapped .

Jim Donovan should get a Football, or Jersey, have the team sign and present it to him.

  29. Pomai October 8, 2010 9:36 am

#22 Markazulu – Now that would definitely get us nationwide attention.

  30. huh October 8, 2010 9:38 am

Derek – maybe UH can ask Jack-in-the-Box for any of ther extra retro helmets. lol.

    http://www.philsteele.com/Pdf/2009_L12Y/wac_09_L12Y/hawaii_09/hawaiivsfresno_09.pdf

We “upset” Fresno 5 times in the last 12 seasons… Beat them 8 out of the 12 meetings. But are 3-3 AT Fresno. We lost ONCE at home.

  32. madeinhawaii October 8, 2010 9:44 am

OOps sorry.. apparently that PDF doesn’t include 2009

Which means… We “upset” Fresno 5 times in the last 13 seasons.. but beat them only 8 out of 13 meetings. 7 out of 11 in the RnS era. We are 3 – 3 AT Fresno… We lost TWICE at home against 5 wins.

  33. chopsueyboy October 8, 2010 9:44 am

    Chopsueyboy- mahalo… I voted.

skycap- awesome. I was following the Victor Perez story – the stars lined up that day. It would be great to give him a HAWAII MAHALO!

OK. Lotsa work to be done before gameday.

    Hi Ho and GO WARRIORS!

    Good morning everyone!

I have always wondered why so many bail places…like in Las Vegas. Do they loan money too for non-bail purposes?

ST — at least you didn’t have to help load your luggage (or handcarry) into the plane’s nose. 😐

I don’t know if you fans remember the last time we play in Fresno (10/4/08) and we very nearly got homered on Fresno’s last second field goal attempt. It is a classic, in fact it made a top ten list of college football’s worst blown calls. Check out the attached link:

    http://tinyurl.com/23y996j

What makes it even more funny is we still won! Enjoy!

  54. Kazz (click to support UH softball) October 8, 2010 11:28 am

    808 Ikea,

Should be TOP 3 of ALL TIME.

Dats why I said the score tomorrow will be:

    UH 0

    WAC Officals 6

  55. chopsueyboy October 8, 2010 11:31 am

    808 Ikea

    thanks for the memories

  56. 808 Ikea October 8, 2010 11:37 am

    Kazz,

What makes me laugh is the acting job the kicker does and Jim Leahy and Russ Yamanoha trying to hold their composure. Man if it were me I’d be laying out the profanity left and right. And to top it off the kicker misses the second kick too! Classic.

  57. tommui October 8, 2010 11:46 am

Couldn’t be Spam – afterall, Roadrunner came out with an ad saying how they have reduced spam on the internet.

Probably the ad was sponsored by those mails I got from Nigeria, France et al saying how I was some heir to a great fortune.

    808 Ikea,

Brah, you should have been with us at Murphy’s for that game back in 2008.

The place erupted. One more call like that and Don Murphy probably would have called HPD…

Kazz, I’m visualizing Murphy’s as I’m reading your post and it must have been unreal when the boys won. To think for that game we got whistled 10 times for 82 yards and Fresno has ZERO penalties, and we still won. Amazing.

Remember UH at the sugar bowl?

We looked like we were in long underwear!

  74. chopsueyboy October 8, 2010 1:48 pm

How about how we looked against WSU in Seattle

white tops and greens pants for road games?

  75. LizKauai (iPad) October 8, 2010 1:50 pm

The white was pretty cool, I thot. Thousands of white shirts in the stadium seats with a solid show of support for our Warriors… And our “little” fantastic Band and cheer and dancers and auxiliary – It was a proud moment, really.

I hope we get to do it again someday!

  76. Hawaiianbod October 8, 2010 1:54 pm

Rutgers and UConn on espn is a pretty excting game.

  77. Kazz (click to support UH softball) October 8, 2010 1:54 pm

    Ipu Man,

The difference between the all white unis at the Sugar Bowl and the all whites we have now is that NOW we have a company that won’t half-a** on our uniforms.

Nike, for all they are worth, couldn’t finish putting the tapa print on the white pants for the Sugar Bowl so that’s why we looked like that.

Some complain about the way the new Under Armour uniforms look, but the BOTTOM line is, Under Armour has given more to the UH football program than Nike ever did in terms of cash for the department and apparel for the team on and off the field.

  78. Ipu Man October 8, 2010 1:55 pm

Even the sugar bowl tv announcers snickkered when

UH came out “holding hands” in their whities…

and then Georgia dawgs just flipped us around like

toy dolls dressed in white. No thanks. Do not want

    that memory again…

  85. grumpy October 8, 2010 2:09 pm

Cannot believe that my friend was talking about the difference between 2006/2007 football teams and the 2008/09/10 football teams being the love between the coaches and among the players. Huh? Since when does love have anyting do to with football. Maybe you can love to hit the crap out of anyone wearing red, I’ll live with that. “Love???” You’ve got to be kidding me. That’s just as useful as positive energy. Hit anybody and anything that moves, that builds positive energy.

All this talk about love is making me more grumpy. Makes me think of my old job when I had to watch JPO’s everyday. Good riddance, I don’t have to do that anymore.

Chopsueyboy, I like those away uniforms, the green and white’s look quite professional.

  90. LizKauai (iPad) October 8, 2010 2:25 pm

Kazz. It was the silver helmets. Gree helmets mo bettah.

Steve- courtesy says it’s okay for people to share their OWN real names if they want.

  91. Ipu Man October 8, 2010 2:26 pm

    Nice pics, Stephen.

  92. LizKauai (iPad) October 8, 2010 2:26 pm

Pomai- that’s according to the blog clock, right?

    Whoosh!

  93. Ipu Man October 8, 2010 2:27 pm

    Is it 4pm Saturday yet???

  94. Kazz (click to support UH softball) October 8, 2010 2:28 pm

    Steve,

He’s some idiot with anger management issues. Can be heard for miles during a Wahine basketball game or softball game depending… Known to waste overpriced water at Aloha Stadium by dumping it on his head after UH TDs.

  95. Steve October 8, 2010 2:33 pm

Kazz, you must be talking about me then, when it comes to Wahine Softball games, especially if they are behind and the dugout is quiet. Somebody still needs to make some noise so the opponent knows the Wahine are not taking a nap.

  96. whitey October 8, 2010 2:35 pm

    kazz, you know that guy????

  97. Ipu Man October 8, 2010 2:35 pm

I think you can re-fill your bottle water

from the drinking fountains around Aloha Stadium, right?

  98. longboarder October 8, 2010 2:37 pm

Oh man, Steve is stirring the pot again.

Same dude who said CL was out of a job at the end of the month. (September)

Dude…ill say it again, Steve you are a clown. And I guess a clown with wet hair after dumping overpriced water on it.

  99. Ipu Man October 8, 2010 2:40 pm

So, in Hawaii, visiting football players go to the beach for fun.

What do they do in Fresno????

  100. Kazz (click to support UH softball) October 8, 2010 2:40 pm

    Hmmm…

Before things gets twisted. I am Kevin.

  101. Kazz (click to support UH softball) October 8, 2010 2:41 pm

    Ipu Man,

    Things to do in Fresno:

    -Visit a garlic farm.

-Go from liquor store to liquor store comparing the different prices of Colt .45.

    -LEAVE ASAP.

  102. Kazz (click to support UH softball) October 8, 2010 2:42 pm

    Ipu Man,

Some visiting football players from the mainland also shoplift in Hawaii for fun and or start fights at night clubs.

  103. Ipu Man October 8, 2010 2:43 pm

Garlic is supposed to give you energy…

  104. Ipu Man October 8, 2010 2:45 pm

Once in Japan, I ate a whole one raw at a bar…

  105. Ipu Man October 8, 2010 2:46 pm

Then on the way home on the subway,

everyone stood about ten yards away from me…

  106. Kazz (click to support UH softball) October 8, 2010 2:46 pm

    Ipu Man,

Yeah, energy to go liquor store-hopping and energy to LEAVE.

  107. bb October 8, 2010 2:46 pm

You can also add that visiting players try to score.

    No not on the field.

  108. Kazz (click to support UH softball) October 8, 2010 2:47 pm

    Ipu Man,

If you like garlic, you’ll love the fries at UH home games at the stadium or at the Les or the SSC.

It’s almost as if they ruined your order of garlic by throwing fries in there.

  109. Ipu Man October 8, 2010 2:54 pm

Actually, I HATE garlic french fries and chicken.

But love garlic salt sprinkled on toast or spagetti…

  110. TChahng [DroidX] October 8, 2010 2:58 pm

Big City Diner in Pearlridge is also showing the game. 🙂

  111. LizKauai (iPad) October 8, 2010 3:00 pm

Hmmm nice of the Bulldogs to throw us a bone. Better than a screwdriver. Thanks, ST!

  112. Steve October 8, 2010 3:04 pm

Hey Kazz, you and I would make a team. With us yelling the Wahine softball team would not have to make much noise. What do you think???

  113. Steve October 8, 2010 3:13 pm

Wow, the Penn St. Volleyball team lost again, to Purdue this time, they are not even in 1st place in their conference anymore.

  114. migloto October 8, 2010 3:17 pm

Kazz: what is your e-mail address?

  115. jm2375 October 8, 2010 3:19 pm

  117. longboarder October 8, 2010 3:25 pm

    LMAO @ Steve

  118. gigi-hawaii October 8, 2010 3:25 pm

Hi, guys! First time posting today. I caught a cold from my grandson, who’s been coughing all day with runny nose, too. So sad. He’s only 7 months old.

  119. gigi-hawaii October 8, 2010 3:27 pm

Can’t wait for 4 pm Saturday to roll around!

  120. gigi-hawaii October 8, 2010 3:28 pm

So, why is Fresno famous for garlic?

  121. gigi-hawaii October 8, 2010 3:29 pm

Kazz, I can’t say I have ever tasted garlic fries. Is that garlic salt on top of french fries???

  122. Steve October 8, 2010 3:30 pm

Hey, gigi, that is something you could use right now, garlic that is, suppose to be good when you have a cold.

  123. Steve October 8, 2010 3:31 pm

Gigi, I think it is more like garlic powder, on the fries. They serve it at the arena.

  124. Kazz (click to support UH softball) October 8, 2010 3:31 pm

    migloto,

    kevin (at) nawahine (dot) com.

  125. gigi-hawaii October 8, 2010 3:32 pm

    Hi Steve,

I am Korean, but seldom eat kim chee, which, as you know, is loaded with garlic.

  126. Kazz (click to support UH softball) October 8, 2010 3:33 pm

    Gigi,

It’s actually REAL minced garlic tossed around with the fries. The thing is, Sodexo on campus and Center Plate at the stadium uses A LOT!!!!

  127. gigi-hawaii October 8, 2010 3:34 pm

wow, Kazz, real garlic? not garlic salt or powder? Do you like it?

  128. jm2375 October 8, 2010 3:36 pm

Steve & gigi – it’s not *garlic powder*, it’s *chopped garlic*, and lots of it. Like Kazz says, you get fries with your garlic. 🙄

BTW, Screecher #1, being a teenager, loves the fuud at the SSC – garlic fries, fried saimin, bambucha nachos …

  129. jm2375 October 8, 2010 3:38 pm

The fries are good, it’s just that you keep tasting it long after the fries are gone. 🙄 👿

  130. gigi-hawaii October 8, 2010 3:39 pm

Screecher loves to carbo load? LOL

  131. gigi-hawaii October 8, 2010 3:40 pm

JM, I can just imagine the aroma of garlic permeating the SSC. How does that affect the opposing teams?

  132. gigi-hawaii October 8, 2010 3:41 pm

The chef must be either Korean or Italian.

  133. wafan October 8, 2010 3:41 pm

    #131 . . .

    GG, who cares?

  134. gigi-hawaii October 8, 2010 3:43 pm

I know Liz loves to make kim chee. She is a true yobo, right, Liz?

My mom used to make kim chee. People passing by our house would say, “Koreans must live there.”

  135. gigi-hawaii October 8, 2010 3:44 pm

Gee, wafan, when was the last time you were at the SSC?

The last time for me was when I watched Shaq play with the Lakers in an exhibition game.

  136. Steve October 8, 2010 3:48 pm

Oh Yes, you can definitely smell the garlic throughout SSC.

  137. LizKauai m/ October 8, 2010 3:52 pm

Actually Gilroy is the garlic capitol of the world, I think.

Garlic butter makes the world go away…. mmmm…

Mahalo Ke Akua for VB Coaches… especially this one:

    http://www.cnn.com/2010/LIVING/10/08/heroes.coach.saves.team/index.html?hpt=T2

    whoosh!

  138. wafan October 8, 2010 3:59 pm

    Gosh darn it.

I had that naughty word in my post and it is being moderated. I will try again.

  139. wafan October 8, 2010 4:01 pm

Good evening! Just got home a bit ago. Still buried under lots of paper. So much for spending my time teaching. I know I have more paperwork to do because of Every Child Left Behind. All in an effort to gather data.

So far, we have seen the dropout rates go up. More kids failing classes. More academic classes because of all the failures. Fewer elective classes because of the emphasis on academic classes since the belief is everyone must graduate with a BA/BS or not be successful in life. Teachers getting frustrated because we see how frustrated the students and parents are getting because we MUST cover specific topics so the kids are ready to take and pass their federally mandated tests. Less funding for basic and career education because the “spec-ialists” were hired to fix the problems. And, the remaining unrealistic expectation that EVERY kid will pass the state test in 2014. And, yes, that includes ESL, SpEd, BD, ED, and assorted other learning disabled kids. Just waiting for some high mucky-muck’s kid to fail the test in 2014, be told he or she will not graduate, and be labeled a failure — all because of test anxiety or because they are unprepared because of a learning disability.

Okay, I feel a little better now.

    Sorry.

  140. wafan October 8, 2010 4:02 pm

And, now to work on SkillsUSA paperwork. This one I do not mind!

    Whoo-hoo!

  141. Warrior Dave October 8, 2010 4:02 pm

    Pomai,

    UH 34 FSU 28

    Mahalo! & Go Warriors!!!!

  142. wafan October 8, 2010 4:06 pm

    GG . . .

Never have been to the SSC. It was not around when I lived in Hawai’i. I know I visit every summer but, there was never any reason to visit the facility; well, exept for the Guy’s Clinic this past August that i could not attend.

If the smells bother the other team, oh well. It is just part of the Hawai’i game environment just as it is playing away games are for the UH.

I do care, though, that every player is treated with respect. Just as any true fan would like to be treated. That is why I have a hard time when the fans boo any amature athlete.

  143. contemporary art paintings new york October 8, 2010 4:08 pm

Hello there everyone 🙂 Just catching up on this.

  144. gigi-hawaii October 8, 2010 4:16 pm

Actually, the last time I was in the SSC was in 2009, when UH alumni were escorted there. I met Bob Nash, who showed us the locker room.

  145. CoolEthan October 8, 2010 4:16 pm

    Right on the money Liz

Gilroy is the Garlic Capitol, ( at least for the U.S.) Europe has lower Italy where it is hot and dry.

You can get anything you want with Garlic….Ice Cream, Hot Dogs, Pizza Pie, Ice Cream, Soup, Hamburgers, Ice Cream, etc

  146. gigi-hawaii October 8, 2010 4:18 pm

ewwww. Garlic ice cream???? No t’anks.

  147. huh October 8, 2010 4:21 pm

gigi – does hubby know that Bob Nash too you into the lockers? 😯

  148. Kazz (click to support UH softball) October 8, 2010 4:24 pm

My Top 5 favorite UH sports foods at the venues:

    1) Bumbucha Nachos at the SSC.

    2) Chili Dog Plate at Les Murakami

    3) Warrior Dog plain sans chili.

    4) Plain hotdog smothered in nacho cheese at the RWSS.

    5) Italian Ice at both SSC and Les Murakami.

  149. LizKauai m/ October 8, 2010 4:25 pm

wafan, I feel for you and all teachers. ECLB is such a pain…

I get my inspiration from TED and folks like Sir Ken Robinson:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9LelXa3U_I

  150. Kazz (click to support UH softball) October 8, 2010 4:25 pm

    Wafan,

If we can use local smells to our advantage, I’d leave a gift basket of dried cuttlefish and assorted mixed arare in the visiting lockerrooms.

  151. CoolEthan October 8, 2010 4:26 pm

    One scoop Avocado Ice Cream

    Second scoop Garlic Ice Cream

It’s called a “Filipino Delight” in the land of Kalif.

  152. gigi-hawaii October 8, 2010 4:27 pm

Hubby is a UH alumnus, so he was at the SSC with me.

  153. wafan October 8, 2010 4:30 pm

    Liz . . .

I show that video in some of my classes. The kids eat it up!

    Kazz . . .

Well, when they fertilize the fields in Fresno they employ smells against the opposition. And, I would add bagong (sp?) and natto (even if it does smell like toe-jam). HA!

  154. huh October 8, 2010 4:41 pm

gigi – oops..sorry…i thought Coach Nash was giving you ‘pointers’ on the full-court press man-to-man defense. heheh

  155. BG October 8, 2010 4:42 pm

    wafan

No matter what anyone else sez, you have my total respect for your diligence and the great things you do with the kids!!! HA!

Hope you mom is feeling her feisty best…

  156. BG October 8, 2010 4:47 pm

Oh, and back in the 70’s when we were slogging up and down the Korean hills near the DMZ, the worst part was going through the rice paddies in the spring…you just knew what kind of fertilizer they saved up all winter to use for the spring crops! The aroma said it all 😀

  157. gigi-hawaii October 8, 2010 4:48 pm

What struck me about Bob Nash was his height. Isn’t he 6’8″ tall or something like that? Next to him I was a midget (5’1″).

  158. BG October 8, 2010 4:49 pm

Any reports on softball practice? Hey Kazz…is Kelly doing alright?

  159. gigi-hawaii October 8, 2010 4:50 pm

BG, Seoul is really westernized, now. Don’t know about the rest of S. Korea. We were there in 2002.

  160. BG October 8, 2010 4:51 pm

    gg

I truly feel sorry for folks that length when they have to take long flights in the economy section.

  161. gigi-hawaii October 8, 2010 4:52 pm

BG, tell me about it. Even at my height, I hated the lack of leg room on long flights.

  162. BG October 8, 2010 4:55 pm

Agreed GG. Betty and I visited a couple of years ago. I was very surprised. Got to meet TChahng there.

Okay, time to open the books…six more months and I’m done!

  163. Kazz (click to support UH softball) October 8, 2010 5:08 pm

    BG,

Coach Coolen was on 1420 earlier in the week and he reports she’s ready to go!

  164. Kazz (click to support UH softball) October 8, 2010 5:13 pm

    BG,

As far as practice goes, I personally haven’t been yet. Don’t get out of the office until 7pm. Msg’d a few of a players on the first day of practice and they were pumped to start again.

  165. wafan October 8, 2010 5:16 pm

    BG . . .

    Uhhhh, thanks. I think.

Congratulations on your pending BA, BS, MA, MS or whatever!!!

As one English teacher told me a few years ago, if I had gone to college I would know to teach the the kids MLA rather than APA. Maybe I need to go to college.

    Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

  166. separate October 8, 2010 5:27 pm

Vote for Bryant Moniz / Davey O’Brien Award.

A vote for MO is also a vote for putting HAWAII on the map.

He is still at #38, with 137 votes.

Heck, the Arkansas State guy is #37.

I think UH and FS should play for the “Golden Screwdriver” to add spice to the rivalry. Then there would also be a reason to play each other when FS leaves the WAC. Just my opinion…

    #185, Office Guy,

The nice people at the Les made some garlic fries for me without adding the salt, since I want to cut down on my salt intake. So, they tossed some freshly cooked fries into a bowl that only contained the chopped garlic. Yum!

    is fresno state that good?

inspite of some key injuries they are still a ten point favorite saturday.

are they that good or are they (vegas line) still under estimating the 4-1 (ATS) warriors?

no doubt this is a defining moment, win this game and the vegas line on the warriors will never be the same bargain this year.

win this and we may just be willing to make all the sacrifices to be a very good team the rest of the year.

  205. Hawaiianbod October 9, 2010 1:47 am

    brother al

i guess the ‘wise guys’, aka Vegas, are well aware that UH has a ‘trend’ of not being able to stop a team with a solid running game….and add to that not havng a winning record on the road…the line, as you know, is all about the publc’s perception…just like you, i hope Vegas is wrong….and we kick their arse!!!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

Go Wildcats (x2)….keep warm d1. heheh

Hope Scott Smith can overcome this recent suspension from the Texas Tech football team and resume playing football. Not sure what happened, but I hope that whatever team policy he violated isn’t real serious. He was having a real good season so far.

Too bad Coach Mack didn’t have a scholarship available when Smith tried to return to Hawaii two years ago.

Article about Fresno State’s QB. It is interesting that he has thrown TD passes to 10 different receivers (one WR has 2 TD passes and the rest have 1 each). They have a lot of injuries to their WRs, with 4 missing games and just about all of their top WRs will either be out of the UH game due to injury or just returning from injury.

  220. Garret October 9, 2010 6:12 am

    wafan,

I really felt bad for you when you vented in #139. California is odd because the property taxes tend to stay in the school district the houses are in, but schools do not receive payment for kids that end up going to private school. So, the poor neighborhoods and rich neighborhoods tend to have schools that are underfunded and certain middle-class neighborhoods have well-funded schools.

That is why schools 10 minutes from my house have class sizes of 40 with no music, art, or science teachers…while the public schools in the district that my kids go to have class sizes of 19 and have PE, music, art, science, and computer teachers. Teachers get prep periods when their students are at those other classes, so they get 1-2 prep periods every day. The teachers for all those extra classes are paid for by the PTA Foundation–through donations and constant fundraising (carnival this weekend, summer events, food sales, Christmas gift wrapping fundraiser, merchandise sales, etc.). Every school district is separate, so the well-funded school districts retain their teachers and get their choice of the best teachers from the neighboring districts. The system is horribly unequal, but as a parent I had to play the game and only looked for houses in the best school district.

My daughters (like all the kids) get 1-on-1 instruction in reading and since my older daughter is advanced in math when her class has math she gets pulled out of class to get 1-on-1 math class with a special teacher they hired. Aside from teaching Faith, that teacher’s main job is to run the Math League at the school (there are competitions for grades 2-6 and 75 kids signed up for it on the first day it started).

Total number of kids last year that were kicked out from the Elementary, Middle, and High school my kids will go to: *0*.

Drop out total for K-12: *0*.

  221. Garret October 9, 2010 6:14 am

Nice feature on Chad Owens. Chad got *300* return yards last week and he faces that same team again this week…so that team is understandably concerned about stopping him.

    http://www.sportsnet.ca/football/cfl/2010/10/09/roughriders_focus_on/

  222. Garret October 9, 2010 6:28 am

After reading about all of the injuries Fresno State has on offense and thinking about how UH has been fairly injury-free, I would change my score prediction if it wasn’t too late…I really think that UH can win this game.

Just to clarify though, what most people do not realize is that the Rainbowtique is the only official retailer of UH merchandise. ALL proceeds from the stores as well as away-game events goes back to support the University, with a portion that goes directly to the Athletics Dept.

Any UH merchandise purchased elsewhere (Longs, Costco, 7-11 etc.), does not benefit the University. Those vendors pay for the licensing fees to use the logo, however, they keep all the profit.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

  361. Maren Kinnebrew November 6, 2010 5:25 pm

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

Hey – I should say, I am impressed with your site. I had no problem navigating through all of the tabs and the information was really easy to gain access to. I discovered what I wanted in no time at all. Pretty awesome.
