Giving back

By Stephen Tsai on February 14, 2011

Former Warriors Vince Manuwai, Ryan Grice-Mullins and Jesse Sapolu took part in a read-to-me program today at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children.  Colt Brennan showed up, too, but because he had a cold, he was not allowed to meet  with the children. The event was part of the book drive in which Barnes and Noble customers made donations. The drive raised enough to purchase 1,100 books for the children. It’s nice to see former players recycling aloha in […]

Empty-schedule syndrome

By Stephen Tsai on February 13, 2011

Checked the TV listings and … no … not there … nothing there, either …  The first weekend without football is always difficult.  Sigh.  * * * * *  When it comes to mergers — in business, in sports — there always is the question: Which side is bringing the most value. For instance, when Boise State was first asked to join the WAC, it was believed the WAC was bringing up BSU’s status. We learned later it was the […]

Gone to Maui

By Stephen Tsai on February 12, 2011

WAILUKU — Maui’s War Memorial Gym has undergone a Manoa makeover with today’s volleyball match between UH and California Baptist.  UH brought over most of the elements from their home matches — statisticians, marketing/promotions staff, statisticians, cheerleaders, and anouncers Billy V. and Ben Kiaaina — for this non-conference match. Maui High’s band volunteered to perform. The gym, which holds about 2,000, was packed, with fans waving ti leaves that were distributed at the door.

On the mend

By Stephen Tsai on February 11, 2011

Colt Brennan is back in Hawaii for the weekend. He is a volunteer coach at tomorrow’s Barefoot League clinic at Aloha Stadium. He appears thin, although he said he weighs more than 200 pounds, and has a slight scar on his left cheek, a result of last November’s horrific two-car accident on the Big Island. He also has scars from the surgery to repair a broken left collar bone. Other than that, he said he feels fine, and has resumed […]

Gentlemen, start your workouts

By Stephen Tsai on February 9, 2011

UH’s pro hopefuls will get their shot March 31 with Pro Day in Carson, Calif.  Representatives from every NFL team will be in attendance to evaluate former Warriors in several disciplines, including the 40-yard dash, t-test, vertical jump, long jump and bench press.  UH associate head coach Rich Miano is the event’s coordinator. * * * * *  Backup linebacker Po’okela Ahmad has completed his UH football eligibility after it was confirmed that he played  in one play in one […]

Big plans

By Stephen Tsai on February 8, 2011

UH officials are working on a plan in which the Warrior football team will conduct a spring practice on the Big Island in March or April. This is part of the Warriors’ island-hopping tour. In 2009, the Warriors conducted a practice and autograph session on Maui; last year, the event was held on Kauai. * * * * * *  With the completion of the Super Bowl,  football season is officially over. At least, the playing part. Not so for […]

Another contest

By Stephen Tsai on February 7, 2011

OK, today’s prize is a football glove autographed by both Greg Salas and Kealoha Pilares.  To enter, please post: “Gimme  the glove so I can catch a football draft.” Avis will choose a winner. Wena will be in charge of mailing the prize.  * * * * *  It’s been that kind of year for Vegas.  First, it snowed last month. Then yesterday, it was soaked when the bettors got paid — big time.  Vegas couldn’t even recoup the money […]
