Giving back

Former Warriors Vince Manuwai, Ryan Grice-Mullins and Jesse Sapolu took part in a read-to-me program today at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children.  Colt Brennan showed up, too, but because he had a cold, he was not allowed to meet  with the children.

The event was part of the book drive in which Barnes and Noble customers made donations. The drive raised enough to purchase 1,100 books for the children.

It’s nice to see former players recycling aloha in the community. Also, former KGMB anchors Liz Chun and Kim Gennaula helped coordinate today’s event.

A work stoppage would impact Manuwai, who is entering the final year of a five-year contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Manuwai, who has played eight NFL seasons, would like to play at least five more years. Following a suggestion from the players’ union, Manuwai saved his last seven paychecks as a cushion against a lockout.

Esperanza Spalding? C’mon now. Really? Really?

Of course, I did feel sorry for Christina Aguilera tripping. “Have a nice trip, see you next fall.”

    Carry over..
    #127…seasider, agree with your comments.
I’ve seen enough of Sharla right now to feel that she will be a AA candidate in the near future. She is extremely poised for a freshie and has good power and arm. She will get much better at game mangement as she gets more games under her belt. She will surpass Grimes in time.
The rightside of the D is open competition right now. Haven’t seen much of Nakao but she showed some flashes of what she can do. We need for Dara, Jazmine and Nakao to really get down and dirty and fight for the job.
So far I’m encouraged by the bottom half. See a lot of potential. Haven’t seen too many bad swings at bad balls at the plate. Like the small ball plays and agressiveness on the bases. Something we didn’t see much of last year.

Hubby watched the Grammys, but I didn’t. He asked how old Barbra Streisand is and I said “probably in her 70s.” He couldn’t believe it, because she looked so good.

ST ~ I refuse to watch the Grammy’s. They never showcase Hawaiian music during the prime time telecast. If Led Ka’apana or Amy can win, place or show almost every year in their genre, why not let them do one number?

Some of the crap they allow from the rap-adap-ado singers(?) really suck! How can you NOT enjoy the versatility of Amy, or Led instead?

Did you ever wonder how or where our nominees are awarded their *Grammy?* It takes place earlier in the day at another venue. The producers say that there is not enuff TV time to show our people receiving their awards and making their acceptance speech.

I say our people should stay home next year and just tell the academy to just FEDEX the awards to Hawaii.

I don’t care how many HRs the Wahine get this year, as long as they play well, the wins (and HRs) will come. It’s really early in the season. The defense has looked good. Just gotta work on not leaving so many on base…

The BIG Question Mark on this team is who will play 1st Base. Sarah seems shakey defensively, and tentative at the plate, does not seem to be the “Tita” her sister, Katie, was at plate. Makani seems solid defensively, but very questionable at thte plate, let’s to many good go by, and swings at way to many bad pitches, also is extremely slow going from homeplate to 1st Base. Hoping there is another player Coolen can go with there, that we have not seen yet.

Stephanie Ricketts: WAC Pitcher of the Week.

Ricketts started three games for Hawai’i this weekend and won them all, throwing a pair of shutouts and finishing with a 0.37 ERA. The junior from San Jose, Calif., threw a one-hitter against future WAC member Texas State, striking out a career-high 12 .

  47. Kazz February 14, 2011 11:05 am

Both Robinson and Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu kept errors to a minimum this weekend.

However, both have yet to show Coach Coolen that they can hit consistently at this time.

This is the first time both are playing 1st base on a somewhat regular basis in their college careers. Makani had a few “clean up” innings at 1st last season and Robinson had some small time on the infield, but at 3rd base last season as well.

I cannot see anyone else sneaking in to 1st. It’s going to be between Robinson and Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamhu. Coach Coolen seems to be keeping Shannon Lum ready for a pinch hitting situation along with Jocelyn Enrique and it’s a super distant possibility that Stephanie Ricketts would be opted at 1st.

Let Makani and Sarah fit into their new “shoes”.

Again, the ENTIRE team will be tested over the next two weeks against top caliber competition on the road.

  48. Kazz February 14, 2011 11:16 am

People must relax and live in the NOW. Last season is DEAD. Last season is GONE.

2011 is now. It is what it is and it will only be what it will eventually be.

It’s unfair to place the expectation of 158+ home runs on this team. It’s unfair to be disappointed with with a win because there were no home runs.

The only thing that we should expect to see this season in compairison to last season is the emergence of leadership. I’ve been saying it for months on end in between the LOI talk and football discussions. We had excellent leadership last season and that was the driving force that got us to the WCWS. Easton doesn’t manufacture leaders.

Without naming names, I do see leadership lurking underneath the surface. HECK, it’s probably there but under our noses and presented in a different way.

Leadership is the only thing I would want to compare this team NOW to last season’s team.

Kazz, thank you for your comments. I know there is still alot of time before the conference season, but hoping one of those 2 will decide to step forward, and say “this is my position and no one is going to take it away from me” both defensively and offensively. Once this happens the team will really be unstopable.

I like what I see at Catcher, 2nd Base, and Right Field. Sharla, seems to have a really strong, accurate arm, would like to see someone try to steal on her, I do not think anybody really can. Kaile seems to be an excellent defensive 2nd baseperson, has good bat control. As for Jasey, has excellent speed, and defensive skills, also a very strong arm in right field. Btw, were did she come from was she on the team last year?

  52. haka February 14, 2011 11:27 am

I am total agreement with Kazz.

The SoftBows of 2011 are, well, the SoftBows of 2011. No comparisons or expectations are needed in my mind. It is early in the season and all the players are finding their place on the team. Again, it is early and the cream will rise to the top as they develope the chemistry for success.

The coaches are mixing things up well with the players. Obviously some positions are a lock and others are being experimented with. In the end, a position or two may be filled by committee. We will adjust as a team to what the competition gives us whether it be home runs, bunts or walks. Defensively, I think we are going to be fine.

In any case, I think the team, collectively, is physically and athletically the best team they have ever had. Mix in mental toughness and team chemistry and I think it is safe to say that they are going to be very successful this season. Go Wahine!

Kazz, #48, I agree with you, last year is last year. I also do not see the girls hitting as many home runs, main reason, opposing pitchers are aware of them, and will not give them anything really good to hit. The girls will need to be alot smarter at the plate, and swing at pitcher mistakes. As Kelly did this past weekend, she was willing to take a walk, and not get frustrated and swing at bad pitches.
I believe people may see a very different team when they return from these 2 tournaments, on the mainland.

  55. Kazz February 14, 2011 11:50 am

Jasey Jensen is a senior this season and a transfer from Utah.

As a Ute, she got a home run off the Rainbow Wahine last season during the Louisville Slugger tournament where we beat Utah 9-8.

  59. Kazz February 14, 2011 11:55 am

But other stats of note (available at hawaiiathletics.com)

We have two players hitting over .300. Kelly Majam is batting .600 from 10 at bats had 6 hits, 4 RBI, slugged 1.200 and one homer. On base % of .789.

Melissa Gonzalez is batting .333 with 12 at bats, four hits, 5 RBI, slugged .917 and two homers.

Sharla Kliebenstein is at .286 and leads the team with 6 RBIs.

Jessica Iwata is at .267 with 4 RBIs. Iwata led the team in RBIs last year.

Alex Aguirre is a perfect 4-4 on stolen base attempts. The team is a perfect 8-8 on stolen base attempts.

    Fielding stats:

Makani is a perfect 1.000 and Robinson is at .941 with one error. Jessica Iwata is at .929 with one error.

Overall team errors = 4 out of five games played.

Other perfect 1.000 fielders are: Majam, Aguirre, Gonzalez, Pagaduan, and Nakao.

Kaia Parnaby started and finished two games with an ERA of .54 😯 and Stephanie Ricketts started and finished three games with an ERA of .37 😯 .

Transfer rules tend to be different for certain sports compared to football and basketball.

Same thing with Shannon Lum who is a junior this season and transferred from Southern Utah.

  61. Pomai February 14, 2011 12:01 pm

First base is more than likely between the two, one will step up and say this is mine, who it is I do not know. As far as the home runs are concerned it is selfish of me but I hope they break the record by a ton, only because I like seeing the ball go over the tennis nets. LOL But with the potential of this entire line up from 1 to 9 I think we will see quite a few.

The team that returns from the 2 tournaments will be a winner no matter what happens.

Being a sports fan, no matter what sport, it is what it is. Having high expectations every year comes with being a fan.

LOL… I have high expectations for my beloved Yankees, winning 27 (?) WS will never be enough. A-Rod hit 50 HRs, bat .300+ with 130+ RBIs, I’ll want more the next year. For the PRO or D1 athlete, enough is not enough. It comes with the territory.

Every year I also have higher expectations for Warrior football, basketball and Wahine volleyball. Winning is not enough. Fans want more. It gets the endorphins flowing in the blood. It gets the turnstile moving in the right directions.

Bottom line, winning brings a following; pretty soon Wahine Softball will have a rabid fan base, probably not in the mold of Wahine volleyball, but one that will be good for the program. Betcha Kelly and her murderous row sistas love all the media (news, TV, ESPN 1400) and increase fan support. Betcha they’re saying “bring it on”.

Don’t worry. Coolen will figure it out. The first player that gets hot w/ the bat will stay on the field for awhile until she cools down at first base. Nakao seems to be taking charge at 2B for now. Just a freshman. Jensen is a senior so she’s been around the block. Saw her family in the stands down the 1B line on Saturday. Mom wearing Jacey’s jersey #30.

Without a doubt, Alex Aguirre is the fastest player on the team. The first 5 games, the team has gotten a lot of players on base, but couldn’t get the timely hit. I’m sure Coolen is aware of this and will get the players’ attention. Going on the road for 2 tournaments will get the team focused. There will be ample opportunities for players to step up and try to make a contributions. Catcher Kleibenstein has already shown that she’s more than capable behind the plate. That was the most key position to fill in my estimation. And the best thing is that she’s a freshman too! She will get better and better. With her and the top 5 they are solid. Ricketts and Parnaby need to pitch well against the better teams but they are capable also. Coolen is already looking for the next top pitching recruit for the future.
Don’t worry abut the home runs. They will come. Main thing, win the games, and pitch and field well. The rest will take care of itself. I will say one thing. The Wahine batters are not cheated at the plate, they take very good cuts and swing hard. I like the agressiveness but also sometimes it’s good to be smart just to make good contact instead of going for the fences. But, if they connect it’s bye, bye baby.

Saw and taked to Aaron Brown, Chizzy Dimude, and Zach Masch at the softball game on Saturday. Nice chat and nice guys. Aaron and Chizzy on pace to graduate in December.
Brown, of course, has NFL aspirations. I told Zach he has a nickname “Monster Masch”. He said yeah, he has heard about that. Maybe the UH band will play the Monster Mash when Masch gets a sack!!!!

He has said that he doesn’t feel the need to add any more pressure on them as he already believes they have enough pressure on themselves everyday.

As a supporter, it’s a leveled approach and for me it keeps me on a an even level when following the team as the season goes along.

For pro athletes is one thing. Shoot! Their only concern is their performance with their high salaries. For college it’s different. These student-athletes have lives outside the sport. Their academics and their social lives are still big components at this age. I’m only 28, but I still can appreciate that the world is still a big place for even the most level-headed student-athlete. Days of classes, weightroom sessions, practice, and whatever else is a part of the circus known as college life.

One game at a time is enough and the best way to handle a long season.

I don’t play the game and I don’t coach, but if that’s how they can stay “sane”. I’d like to mirror that approach.

Kazz & Pomai – noticed there’s no link to the booster club website on the softball home page. Are they gonna put it up soon?

  87. jm2375 February 14, 2011 1:59 pm

Stretch – ❓ today is Valentine’s Day, not April Fools!

  88. Kazz February 14, 2011 2:02 pm

    JM,

Yes. Also there are no links directly to http://www.nawahine.com.

However, under the link to ‘give to UH softball’ it does direct them to the AKA website page for those wanting to make an outright donation via online to the booster club account.

In checking the other sports pages, there are no direct links to those programs with their own booster website.

Not all booster clubs at UH have their own website.

    We can look into it.

  89. Pomai February 14, 2011 2:02 pm

#86 jm2375 – we have asked them a number of times to put our link up. You would think they would do it without us asking them, go figure.

  90. Stretch February 14, 2011 2:03 pm

It’s going to have to be done via live stats and maybe a rare streaming video from one of the teams.

Last season I used the links from http://www.hawaiiathletics.com.

Usually the “live stats” tab on the schedule portion on the front page will take you directly to a live stat feed.

Texas State plays Wisconsin on Thursday, quick turnaround time for them. I guess they can afford changing their reservations, too bad, I’d like to see Chandler Hunt pitch against us. She was the losing pitcher to SUU yesterday, without her on the mound Texas State wouldn’t be the same. Texas State struggled with their bats.

  111. Kaimuki Kid February 14, 2011 3:18 pm

It was something about a connecting flight being delayed and that they needed to leave on 5:30 pm Flight to make a connection in LA to get or be stuck another day in Hawaii.
They were staying at the hotel I work in

  112. Kaimuki Kid February 14, 2011 3:20 pm

They actually wanted to play earlier in the day but they said that Coach Coolen did not want the ladies to miss class time, so the 5 pm was scheduled.

  117. WahineSoftballFan February 14, 2011 3:27 pm

I do not blame Coach Coolen, the Wahine will already be missing at least 2 weeks of classroom time.

  118. Kazz February 14, 2011 3:28 pm

Texas State has a formidable pitcher. I wasn’t paying much attention to her, but only knew Texas State is the defending Southland champs three years in a row.

WAC softball in the spring of 2013 will look shady and provided Texas State continues to roll, they might dominate the new WAC softball landscape with us, FSU, and UNR gone.

No worries – nothing was there!

  120. Derek February 14, 2011 3:46 pm

I wonder if Coolen will schedule another game to make up for this one. Just a suggestion, play a game against the defending National Champions, Hawaii Pacific University.

Good idea at the softball stadium, Ball Park Bingo. Very good crowd on Saturday. Gave a donation to the program. These ladies deserve our support and the games are free.

If you ask me, poor planning by the Texas St. coaches on the travel plans. If they knew this, they should have played the game with UH on Sunday. Everybody was off on that day and there would have been a big crowd at the game. It’s pretty sickening, really.

“It took me by surprise. I can’t believe it, but at least I’m properly dressed this time. The first time I won a Grammy, I was wearing a $100 outfit from eBay. My whole outfit was worth $100. Today I’m wearing a dress and jewels worth $100,000 — at least I’m properly dressed.”

  137. Garret February 14, 2011 6:18 pm

Duane Akina leaves Texas about four weeks ago and ends up at the Universsity of Arizona. Rumor has it that he may be back at the University of Texas this week. Again he will be Mack Brown’s defensive backs coach. Waiting for confirmation on that rumor.

    Pride.,

Yes, Akina is back at Texas. From what I heard, Akina actually changed his mind awhile back and asked to come back to Texas earlier, but Mack Brown had already offered the job to Gray. However, Gray went from DB coach at Texas to defensive coordinator in the NFL, so Akina could get his job back.

Less than a month after leaving his job as Texas’ defensive backs coach to take the same position at Arizona, Akina is returning to his old job with the Longhorns, UT announced Monday.

In yet another wild twist to the Longhorns’ busy offseason, Akina replaces his replacement, Jerry Gray, who was hired as the Tennessee Titans’ defensive coordinator Saturday.

It is too bad that RGM was released…but some other CFL team will sign him soon hopefully. “Muller”?

Also announced on Monday, the Riders released import returner/receiver Ryan Grice-Mullen.

Muller returned 22 punts for 177 yards and 24 kickoffs for 498 yards after signing midway through the 2010 CFL season.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

  221. shopper bags March 2, 2011 9:01 pm

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

  231. Gucci Outlet March 3, 2011 4:39 pm

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

That is getting a bit extra subjective, however I a lot favor the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has extra aptitude, and some cool capabilities like ‘Mixview’ that allow you to shortly see related albums, songs,or other users associated to what you’re listening to.Clicking on a type of will middle on that item, and any other set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by comparable artists, songs, or users.Talking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and changing into friends with them. Then you definately can listen to a playlist created in keeping with an amalgamation of what your entire guests are listening to,which can also be satisfying. Those considering privateness will probably be relieved to understand you possibly can prevent the public from seeing your individual listening habits in case you so choose.
