Another contest

OK, today’s prize is a football glove autographed by both Greg Salas and Kealoha Pilares.

To enter, please post: “Gimme  the glove so I can catch a football draft.”

Avis will choose a winner.

Wena will be in charge of mailing the prize.

It’s been that kind of year for Vegas.

First, it snowed last month. Then yesterday, it was soaked when the bettors got paid — big time.

Vegas couldn’t even recoup the money  on prop bets, such as when Christina Aguilera messed with the over/under by abbreviating the second verse of the national anthem. (Give credit to singers at UH events; they have to do two pre-game anthems.)

* * * * *

The Warrior football coaches are expected to meet today to set the spring rosters. Decisions will be made on which walk-on candidates to invite to spring training, which begins March 9.

But if you need a football fix, several Warriors work out afternoons at the Ching Athletic Complex.

* * * * * *

If the Punahou Carnival makes a lot of money, and UH needs a lot of money, why doesn’t UH have a carnival, too?

We’re happy to report that DPK is back home, much healthier, and much lighter (by 20 pounds) .

DPK says thanks to everyone.

* * * * * *

UH’s media relations department wishes you to know that individual tickets for UH baseball games are on sale right now.

* * * * * *

I don’t care what Robert Kekaula thinks. Fergie’s got that boom, boom, pow. Best thing about the Super Bowl:

fergie

(Thanks for the picture, PowderPuff.)

Happy birthday to Josh Pacheco.

Aaron Rodgers was on The Herd this morning, and he sort of took a jab at the host. Cowherd kept saying it was “cool,” but he looked like his feelings were hurt. (OK, I know I’ve got football withdrawals when I start watching the TV version of a radio show.)

Ms Diller was a frustrated mom who was encouraged by others to earn some extra money telling jokes. She started doing stand-up comedy, and the rest is history. She was once considered the Champion of the desperate housewives of America.

  50. papajoe2 February 7, 2011 9:38 am

I was thinking about the Star Spangled Banner that was sung during the super bowl.To most of us, if not all of us, this song, represents the United States and how they fought for freedom. Not only the United States itself, but how the US lives. Like what we have over other, not so fortunate countries such as a job, unemployment insurance, retirement pay or social security. Most people have medical insurance or its avaiable, or doctors within driving distance. Even having a mortgage, whereas, some countries you have to buy your house with cash. Running water. Sewers. Electricity. The point that I am trying to make is, while I do not condone Ms. Aguleira (sp?) getting the words wrong, her “wrong” version reminds me of what our country is like. Very, very good, but yet, not perfect. As for the SSB, maybe her “wrong” words could represent the men and women in the military who fought for our freedom, but yet, did not make it home. God Bless America! God Bless Hawaii, the best of the best. And may god bless each and every one of you.
    Aloha, papajoe2

    punahou carnival proffers many…

as tsai said that maryknoll takes in quite a number of cars in search for parking.

the big winner is that church down the street on punahou and beretania is an even larger benefactor with a front lawn and existing parking that probably accomodates 500 cars at one sitting and a turn over of at least six times in the day and a half of its existence…that’s a lot of bucks at $8 for parking, $24,000.00.

i wonder if the church and our maryknoll donates some money to punahou?

  69. Pauoa Boy February 7, 2011 10:13 am

Jordan Sparks should have sang the National Anthem again, she is by far the best singer to ever sing the National Anthem at the Super Bowl hands down, no one even comes close! The whole Superbowl festivities where supbar for me this year besides the game itself. I mean we got Lady Gaga, I mean Christina Aguilera messing up the dayum National Anthem (shame on you)…then the Black Eyed Peas, looking like characters from Space Balls with the drag queen that can’t sing to save her life in Froggie or Fergie whatever his I mean her name is. The commmercials where okay some funny but nothing that made me say, dayum that commercial was hella funny. Pepsi Max stepped up there commericial game more than Bud Light this year I must say though… Props to Aaron Rodgers who outplayed #7 on the Steelers…to me it seemed Big Ben threw the game away, literally…

Have a GREAT day folks as I work hard in getting the winners their superbowl shirts to them !

    al #78:

I was not aware of that – I was told that all parents were expected to volunter and parents would always grumble that they had to put so much effort before, during, and after the carnival; especially, after paying the high tuition!

my immediate neighbor’s daughter, as a Junior, was co-chair of the carnival and her parents were pulling hairs!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pauoa Boy, I thought the Whitney Houston National Anthem from Super Bowl 25 was suppose to be the best of all time. I haven’t watched a Super Bowl in a very long time, but that is what I have heard. I remember after she sang it, everybody was going bonkers trying to get a copy of it.

  96. Stephen Tsai February 7, 2011 10:45 am

    Re: Vegas.
Sports books make the money on the extra moolah they collect on bets. The odds are set on predicting that an equal number of people will bet on each side. But everybody bet the favorites the past three weeks, and the Packers (twice) and the Steelers (over the Jets) killed.

  97. Pauoa Boy February 7, 2011 10:47 am

rage777 – Nah, I still say Jordan Sparks singing um was the best, Whitney is just loud, Jordan Sparks didn’t overexaggerate the notes and was on point the whole song. I hate when singers try to overpower the song and carry out the frikkin notes for seconds at a time sheesh just sing it like in elementary school keep it simple.

ST – ah c’mon you seriously like Fergie…tell me she never look like one drag queen or maybe that was Christina Aguilera… anyway, she cannot sing live to save her life, I thought I was watching the worst American Idol Auditions again…

  98. Stephen Tsai February 7, 2011 10:48 am

    Phyllis Diller. Funny.
    Joan Rivers. Funny.
    My friend, Lei Colburn. Hysterical.

  105. Stephen Tsai February 7, 2011 11:05 am

    The importance of punctuation:
A panda walks into a bar, sits down and orders a sandwich. He eats the sandwich, pulls out a gun, and shoots the waiter dead. As the panda stands up to go, the bartender shouts: “Hey! Where are you going? You just shot my waiter, and you didn’t pay for your sandwich.” The panda yells back: “I’m a panda. Look it up.” The bartender opens his dictionary and sees the following definition for panda: “A tree dwelling marsupial that eats shoots and leaves.”

That old story reminds me of the Black Eyed Peas’ lead singer: Will.I.Am.

The Idaho coach should take a closer look at his own players’ actions before pointing fingers & complaining about our players.

  107. LizKauai m/ February 7, 2011 11:07 am

    #8 – ST… and I was making excuses for you like the true co-dependent enabler I am… 😆

    As for the National Anthem.
To me, it’s all about the song and not the singer.
It’s a difficult song to sing because of the range required… so kudos to anyone who can sing it with the Warrior Marching Band.

I like it straight and beautiful without embellishments that draw attention to the singer and (to me) detract from the lyrics.

Truth be known, I wish the National Anthem was God Bless America or America the Beautiful… both very uplifting and peaceful.

  108. Kazz February 7, 2011 11:08 am

Looking forward to spring practice and the rosters and initial depth chart. One of the most eagerly things to know is what players have improved the most from the end of the Hawaii Bowl until now in terms of growth, size, speed, quickness, VJ, strength, etc. Above all, we need to determine the playmakers to replace Salas, Pilares, Green, Bradley, Mana Silva, and the other defensive backs that completed their eligibility. It is all about production.

We have the players in the program with the ability. We need leaders who can step up and deliver the goods.

    RE: Idaho Game.

In all honesty, Fresno State is the DIRTIEST women’s bball team out there. I have sat behind the bench and as close as we are, it’s easy to see what happens and to be honest, Idaho’s players are NOT “dirty”. It was a physical game and the Wahine showed that they can be just as physical as any team out there… REALLY missing Katie Wilson this season tho…

Newlee was just salty as hell. They were the #4 team in the conference and flat out lost it in the second half. Would #25 have made the difference? NO. When watching the replay later that night, it was obvious we made some small adjustments and got more aggressive on offense. The score might have been closer, but the way the whole game was played, we kept Idaho within arm’s distance and never let them really pull away.

Kloke (#25) was tough and never once complained about her collision with Kanekoa. Coach Newlee should learn something from his own players.

We watched a few of the SB commercials and Mrs A-House and I agreed that 2011 left a lot to be desired – some we could not comprehend the message and most were off-the-wall and negative in nature. None made us laugh; all made us think, “what the hay!”.

Imagine to pay over a million dollars for a 30-second commercial that stunk! jus our opinion!

    ST,

That EMINEM/Chrysler ad was SICK indeed! I liked the defiant tone it set. The city of Detroit has really suffered and it’s nice to see an American company stand out and say “HEY! We make cars too!!!”.

  122. BigIslandkurt February 7, 2011 11:48 am

Sorry, you guys are probably just offended by her raunchy humor, but Margaret, the NOTORIOUS C.H.O, is Funny has h***. She ranks right up there with some of the male comic counterparts whose acts are quite raunchy and crude too. Sorry, some of us no shame if we enjoy raunchy and crude comedy. Not all comedy have to be For Tu tu tu tu Tu tu. She is a good comic. Being Korean is just another really cool twist to it.

    Margaret Cho = Raunchy?

That’s PG stuff. Her material about her mom and such was funny but how many times is she going to keep fishing in that barrel for material? A lot of comics that rely on ethnic jokes will get old real quick.

BTW, if you want RAUNCHY then Lisa Lampanelli is it. Enough said! But again, a lot of racial humor and it gets old real quick.

    My personal favorite: Louis CK.

My ALL-TIME favorite: The LATE Mitch Hedberg.

ST posted that UH is in no hurry to find a replacement, but as a defensive player, I would want to know ASAP – could affect the whole mind-set for “off-season” training.

Kazz, you fo real? Have you even watched Margaret Cho’s shows? Lucky if about 25% of her material is about growing up or being Korean. While the material is certainly delivered from a Korean American lens, she touches on many many more tabu topics other than the ethnic stuff. Stuff that I just cannot write on this blog.

I’m a fan. Here’s a short list of some of my most favorite comics ever!

Everytime I think about my 49ers missed out on getting Aaron Rodgers with the first pick in the 2005 draft I get sick. It’s just like Sam Bowie being picked by Portland instead of Micahel Jordan and the Trailblazers picking Greg Oden instead of Kevin Durant. Those kinds of big mistakes can set a franchise back 10, maybe 20 years. I don’t know who’s doing the drafting for the 49ers now, but I tend to trust Jim Harbaugh. He saw something in Andrew Luck and look where Stanford is now.

    2011 football:

IF, and only if, UH and Boise State go undefeated, who will be selected to a BCS game?
Depending on schedule, a dropped pass, fumble, interception, weather, etc. it’s forseeable that the top teams in the BCS conferences will one or more losses (just like 2008). “It could happen.” (Angels in the Outfield).

I believe that, given a choice, Sugar Bowl would pick UH in a heart beat for the $$$ Hawaii fans spent in 2008. And, for sure, I will bring and wear long pants – no more bermuda shorts walking around in 29 degree weather again!!!

Let Boise St go to the Orange Bowl. See how many fans will follow or not follow them. Yea, the Fiesta Bowl had many, but that was just a “short drive down the road”.

  189. Kazz February 7, 2011 6:03 pm

The only Superbowl halftime show that I thought was good was Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers.

They are “before my time”, but to me it was the best performance because there were no collaborations for the sake of name value. Something about the simplicity of their performance is what made it the best performance I saw. That and while I am familiar with some of their hits, they also sounded the best live.

What does Slash and the B.E.P. have in common??? What did N’Sync and Aerosmith have in common???…Thank you!

Just because it’s ‘mainstream’ doesn’t mean it has quality. No need to mix Justin Beiber, Usher, and Toby Keith for next year’s Superbowl ok!!!!

It was fitting, the best Superbowl halftime show was during the best Superbowl game I ever saw (Pats vs Giants a few years ago).

    ***Off topic rant***

It’s like this American Idol nonsense… Maybe Steven Tyler has the career to really “judge” talent, but J-Lo???

It doesn’t take much to judge KARAOKE singers with marketable “looks”.

Maybe I’ll give American Idol a chance when the auditions REQUIRE them to perform ORIGINAL pieces and the entire competition has them perform an ORIGINAL piece of music as they go along.

    Not indicating any preference …

Tomey: head coach with much experience; articulate; teams that he coached were competitive and probably needed to help Mac like Tormey did – question: can he still recruit?

McKnight: Great job he did with the UH special teams with JJ; fiery leader; good coach and experienced recruiter.

Kim McCloud – young but experienced in coaching; has skills in recruiting, especially in areas that could use strengthening.

  205. Derek February 7, 2011 6:56 pm

I like Tomey. This guys is a lifer as far as coaching young men and being around football. College football, in particular, is life for him. He would do a great job as a special teams coach. He’s a motivator, he’s been around the block, and he sure can sell a program. And I think he can get the top local talent with his charisma and his charm. Dick Tomey loves Hawaii and he loves the University of Hawaii football program. Basically, he’s the one who brought us to big time football. We had the largest crowds under Tomey. The fact that he’s kinda retired only means that Tomey wants to give back to the program. He’s not going anywhere. This is where he want to live. He doesn’t need the money. He’s already made it. And, I think, for him he’s excited. Heck, he’s a lot younger than Mouse Davis too.
Finallly, Tomey understands that special teams can win football games. He proved it when he coached the Warriors, and at Arizona, and even at San Jose St.

Nothing against the other 2 men, but to me, Tomey can sell the program.

  218. Garret February 7, 2011 8:09 pm

Three people, we’re told, who are candidates: Kim McCloud, Dennis McKnight, Dick Tomey

Very interesting candidates. I would go with McCloud because he’s reportedly been a good recruiter and UH needs another powerhouse recruiter on staff. Tony Tuioti seems to have done a great job this year, but UH needs more than that for recruiting and Tormey’s Washington connections are gone now.

If you look at SMU’s recruiting class, *none* of the recruits that signed with them have McKnight listed as their recruiter. I also don’t remember hearing him as a recruiter when he was at UH. However, he does have a fiery presence and I think he would improve UH’s special teams. SMU sure blocked a LOT of kicks while he was special teams coach.

I loved watching Coach Tomey’s teams at Aloha Stadium. However, at his age I doubt that he’s the powerhouse recruiter for UH to fly all around the country. He always did do a good job emphasizing special teams and he was a key assistant coach in the turnaround at Texas before Tomey went to SJSU.

  219. Garret February 7, 2011 8:13 pm

Rivals lists the top 25 recruiters in college football and just 1 recruiter made this list from a non-AQ conference…Adrian Klemm. I’ve been talking about him on this blog for well over a year, but I guess I’m going to cut way back on that because some much bigger budget school will probably get him if he ever leaves SMU.

He scored one of the biggest stunners of the class when four-star California defensive end Davon Moreland chose SMU over USC and UNLV. Moreland was one of five prospects Klemm managed to snag out of California. He was also responsible for Lubbock (Texas) wide receiver Arrius Holleman and kept him despite officially visiting Texas Tech after an offer late in the process. Klemm was the primary recruiter or assisted on eight different signees and all but one of them are three stars or higher, very impressive for a non-BCS team.

Majam, Gonzalez, Rodriguez, Iwata, Ricketts, and Parnaby get the ink, but I’ll go on record the following will also will have big years for the Wahine.

    1) Alexandra Aguirre – LF to me she’s the most underrated player on the team. She’ll have a monster year and be 1st team All-WAC.
    2) Sarah Robinson – 1B I’ve heard she’s improved the most after sparingly played last year. Obviously, she’s got good genes. I’m excited to see her play.
    3) Makani Duhaylongsod-Maleimamahu – DP if she connects it’s gone. Hope it’s often.
    4) Jasmine Zamora – 2B true freshman – probably the most highly touted freshmen Coolen recruited the past year.

  221. BleedGreen808 February 7, 2011 8:13 pm

Kim McCloud–Don’t know who he is

Dennis Mcknight–Maybe third time is the charm.

Dick Tomey–Too many HC on the staff. Need someone young and up and coming.

  222. Garret February 7, 2011 8:13 pm

We shouldn’t forget that 2012 recruiting started weeks ago.

The Longhorns have picked up their first commitment for the 2012 football recruiting class with the non-binding verbal pledge of Connor Brewer, a pro-style quarterback from Chaparral High School in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Brewer, a 6-foot, 2-inch, 185-pounder, had numerous offers already. He reportedly picked Texas over, among others, Texas A&M, Nebraska, Alabama and Tennessee.

Isn’t McCloud the guy who can’t die unless you cut his head off?…There can be only ONE!
Anyhoo, I like the young guns.

McKnight, Fire, Passion, defintely brings the urge to finish a play and get after the ball.

Tomey, The Desert Fox! Wiley able to motivate and inovative.

    What a great situation!

  224. chawan_cut February 7, 2011 8:22 pm

    pauoa boy,
i heard you’re a fan of my favorite player too.

Only one way to watch the 2011 edition of Na Wahine Softball…..LIVE at the WSS!
    Be there!

  226. chawan_cut February 7, 2011 8:26 pm

i have a futures sheet from vegas before the ’07 season that had the odds for every college team winning the national championship. hawaii had like a 50-1 chance. we were way above other big name schools like notre dame, etc. i know it was impossible with the bcs, but it was still cool to see that they thought highly of us in the preseason. i have that paper somewhere. i gotta go find it.

  227. Bowwar February 7, 2011 8:28 pm

I was at UH when Tomey was coach and I remember attending his rally speeches at the Campus Center. The MAN was such a motivator that I felt like putting on the pads and playing for him, although being only 5’5″, 145 lbs, and a 6.x 40 time. I’d play for him now, being 30 years older and 60 lbs heavier…We won’t discuss my 40 times. 🙂

The man bleeds green and if he wants to coach special teams, God bless him…

Imagine a Mouse and a Tomey in the House…ALRIGHT!!

  228. Bowwar February 7, 2011 8:31 pm

The BEST Super Bowl halftime show ever was probably Michael Jackson…Who could forget him singing “Black and White” on the stage.

  229. Curt February 7, 2011 8:40 pm

Interesting mix of coaching candidates. I believe that we really need a good special teams coach; and I don’t think we have someone on staff to put in that position. McCloud is a defensive back coach. So, that leaves us McKnight or Tomey. Both can motivate. I think Tomey adds more expertise, experience, and cache to the Warriors. I say it’s the return of the desert fox.

  230. BleedGreen808 February 7, 2011 8:40 pm

    ST–

    Is Marcus Umu in school?

  231. Curt February 7, 2011 8:44 pm

    Bowwar,

We may still need you on special teams. Do you have any eligibility left? 🙂

  232. Curt February 7, 2011 8:47 pm

    homey,

    I don’t think McCloud is Scottish/Irish. He’s got a pretty good “tan.”

  233. madeinhawaii February 7, 2011 8:48 pm

    Bower…

    40’s times? Meters or years?

  234. Curt February 7, 2011 8:51 pm

    Garret,

I really like the idea of bringing more recruiting horsepower in the coaching line up. However, I think Tomey brings so much value for Mack to pass up.

  235. madeinhawaii February 7, 2011 8:54 pm

    Ooops.. sorry.. I mean.. “Bowwar”

  236. Curt February 7, 2011 8:54 pm

    cache = cachet

  237. Curt February 7, 2011 9:01 pm

    Hey Bowwar,

I noticed that we didn’t recruit any defensive tackles this year. Maybe you and I can try out for that position. No need run fast. My forty times are measured by the calendar.

  238. A-House February 7, 2011 9:04 pm

My take on the 3 “finalists”:

Tomey – no; I’ve already stated my piece on him. If he loves Hawaii and Warrior football so much, why NO vote for UH in the top 25 during the 2007 season?

McKnight – like his firery spirit and he is engaged to UH track & field coach. if they get married, UH must look for another coach.

McCloud – probably the best pick of 3 based on coaching experience and ability to recruit west of the Mississippi.

  239. Kekoa February 7, 2011 9:08 pm

    Curt

  240. Bryson February 7, 2011 9:14 pm

My vote is with Kim McCloud…He gives us a recruiting presence in LA as well as Texas…He’s a young coach who players can relate too…Can also help coach db’s along with Miano…Maybe He can coach CB’s and Miano can move over to coach Safeties…

  241. homey ℞ February 7, 2011 9:15 pm

  242. Curt February 7, 2011 9:17 pm

    A-House,

As JJ use to tell us, one snap and clear. Even tho Tomey didn’t show us the luv in 07, I forgive him. As long as he jacks up the special teams and really makes dem special.

  243. Curt February 7, 2011 9:19 pm

Howzit Kekoa. Hope you and Lady Di are doing well.

  244. Hawaiianbod February 7, 2011 9:20 pm

  245. Curt February 7, 2011 9:21 pm

Wats da sense of marrying a track n field wahine? No ken catch her. No make sense to me. 🙂

  246. Curt February 7, 2011 9:24 pm

Wow. Everyone picking the Scotsman/Irishman, McCloud. I still say the desert fox returns!

  247. Steve February 7, 2011 9:28 pm

People, the only reasonable choice is Tomey, here are the reasons why:

    1. McCloud, will only be here 1 maybe 2 years before he goes for greener more lucrative pastures.
    2. McKnight, has shown that he will also move on, and not stay here.
    3. Tomey, has retired here, so he will always live here, he is not going anywhere, he can solely recruit in the State of Hawaii. UH has never had a coach whose sole responsibility is to recruit the State of Hawaii ONLY.

  248. Curt February 7, 2011 9:35 pm

We’ve got a great offense. We’ve got a great defense. We have special teams.

I’m guessing Mack wants to make the special teams special. We have no one with that expertise today. Recruiting wise, we’ve got Mack, Lumpkin, Rolo, Aranda, Tuioti, Miano, and Cal Lee. I say Mack’s #1 priority has to be special teams to take us to the promised land. Based on that, I can’t pick the defensive back coach; we got one already.

  249. d1島 February 7, 2011 9:36 pm

    Can McCloud coach LB’s?

The best ST Coach is already on staff.

  250. d1島 February 7, 2011 9:39 pm

McCloud is my choice. Played for UH. Good recruiter although I like the idea of someone like Tomey being assigned as a Hawaii recruiter only.

  253. papajoe2 February 7, 2011 9:59 pm

#251 homey, I thought he was banned?

  256. Curt February 7, 2011 10:12 pm

I’d sure like to see us start grooming the heir apparent to Rolo. My top choice is Inoke Funaki. We shouldn’t wait too long…the sooner the better.

  257. homey ℞ February 7, 2011 10:14 pm

    Heir to Rolo ====> Colt

  258. RedZone February 7, 2011 10:14 pm

I was hoping for more candidates but i kinda of like McKnight. He brings that intensity you need from a ST coach. Still Tormey also coached the safeties so I was hoping that we would be getting a big time safety/ST combo coach.

  259. Curt February 7, 2011 10:16 pm

Colt would be a good choice down the road. But he’s got to give it another shot in the pros. In my mind, I think he should go to Canada this season to get some playing time. He probably needs to validate his skills to those in the NFL. He should be working out by now. I wonder how he’s doing?

  260. Steve February 7, 2011 10:30 pm

    Homey & Papajoe,

  263. Bowwar February 7, 2011 10:39 pm

#231 Curt…Yeah, we can anchor the defensive line cuz we ain’t going too far…lol We definitely would be “special team” quality. None the less, Tomey can motivate anyone…Remember him having the team walk over hot coals???

    # 233 Made…I guess if its metric, then it’s meters…Centuries might be more appropriate timewise…Dat’s okay, we definitely going fo’ broke!

  264. Steve February 7, 2011 10:40 pm

Curt may have something when he mentioned Inoke Funaki, as special teams coach. He is from Kahuku, a hot bed for college players.

  265. whitey February 7, 2011 10:42 pm

Not be critical of steelers offense, but they need to re-evaluate their plays and possibly change their offensive coordinator. no discipline and too predictable.l

  267. Bigislandkurt February 7, 2011 10:45 pm

Just to clarify, these three names are CANDIDATES, not finalist right?

Now I know that I”m going to take some flack for this, but in my opinion, the warriors need a BLACK coach — a YOUNG black coach to be more specific. So maybe McCloud rises to the top of the heap for these three names.

I know some of you ready to fire back your “it doesn’t matter what color they are, so long as they can coach/recruit/etc” response. Fire away!

  268. whitey February 7, 2011 10:47 pm

saw a storyline about how mr rooney, steelers owner, went to shake hands and thank each player after the game, but when he was approaching ben r who had his face in a towel, he just walked by him. many ways to interpet this.

    Steve,

I wasn’t suggesting Inoke as the special teams coach. My pick is Tomey. Put Tomey in charge of bringing the special teams up to the level of the defense and offense.

I was suggesting that we also find a way to begin grooming Rolo’s successor. My pick for that is Inoke.

  285. al February 7, 2011 11:57 pm

here’s an excerpt of my post almost a week ago….

i’d like to see a young coach with a passion for recruiting who can effectively work the los angeles-anaheim-san diego counties. an-ex uh’er would be nice with contacts that include nfl teams/scouts.

young coach who has the energy to recruit.
young coach who can relate to the new generation players.

having a passion for recruitng with contacts in the SoCal arena is very important. these are hotbeds of many a talented young man.

an ex-uh’er helps two ways, bleeds warrior green/black, is an example to both student and parents. look at me i have graduated and made something of myself.

pro contacts always help in recruiting and coaching techniques.

in this day and age the new coach has got to work hard recruiting as it is often said time and again that recruiting is the lifeblood of a successful program.

  286. homey ℞ February 7, 2011 11:59 pm

No offense Ballpicker, but I’m not going to be kind to someone. I have my reasons and it’s not going to change.

BTW, your “Stop it” reminds me of DPK’s Hotel St. lisp lingo…”thop ith” LOL

  287. al February 8, 2011 12:07 am

    don’t get me wrong…

i think that dick tomey has done an awfully lot for our football program. i am sure he is still a very good salesman (recruiter). he could be successful as a home town recruiter. and he is good people.

mcknight has that fiery, pump you up style that was great in the old days and yah, you need someone like that on staff. not sure how great a recruiter he is. i don’t know his track record in recruiting.

yah, for me kim mccloud has all the skills, tools, history, and could become one of our top candidates in the future for a defensive coordinator or someday as a head coach. for me he is the right fit as we transition in to the mwc. we will need to step up our game and our staff has to have the same energy level to take us up there. he is the right guy with all the attributes for the position.

  288. homey ℞ February 8, 2011 12:09 am

  290. Curt February 8, 2011 12:14 am

    al,

So who else on the current staff could coach the special teams?

  291. al February 8, 2011 12:27 am

is age a factor in assembling a coaching staff???

by season’s end this year our staff will be…

    head coach = 66
    asst coach = 65
    asst coach = 79
    asst coach = 60
    player personnel = 63

do they have the energy to recruit hard?
we’ve already two of them who doesn’t get out of the kitchen to get in to homes.

yup, we need a young and energetic coach with contacts, etc. etc.

  292. al February 8, 2011 12:33 am

cal lee was known for being not only a defensive genius but an excellent special teams guy.

rich miano is another as he too earned a living on special teams with the jets. as the associate head coach/pro liasion/dbacks/walk on coordinator he has a lot on his plate. let him take special teams and he coud help mccloud with the safeties as the latter takes full charge of the db’s. miano would do well at special teams.

although i really like tony tuioti at dline coach, he too could/would do a great job on special teams. he has energy to do both actually.

  293. SteveM February 8, 2011 12:33 am

I have some reservations about Tomey, but if he really wants to help, fine. Similar to super veteran coach Mouse Davis, who summed it up when he said, “Hey, I’m not here to build my resume…”. Yeah, been there, done that. I think they come back to build their legacy. There’s a lot of proven experience and credibility. They will develop their future replacements.

  294. al February 8, 2011 12:34 am

  295. al February 8, 2011 12:35 am

and before you ask, no, i am not kim mccloud’s agent. but, if he gets hired he owes me lunch. haahaha.

  296. al February 8, 2011 12:36 am

a guy on islands who was a great special teams guy is bob wagner.

  297. al February 8, 2011 12:42 am

to me guys like dick tomey and bob wagner who are legendary coaches at manoa who have embraced the lifestyle of hawaii can play a very large role with the football program if they really wanted to.

they could be ambassadors of warrior football. become very public with the program and help increase our sponsorship dollars, become spokespersons, etc.

bill walsh well into his retirement years did just that for both stanford university and the 49’ers.

i can see june jones becoming that person as well. of course, though i still think that june jones will be the next head coach at the university of hawaii. upon mack’s retiring of course.

  298. al February 8, 2011 12:45 am

yah dick and wags should get heavily involved with na koa.

  309. Curt February 8, 2011 1:02 am

That would be interesting if June returned back to UH. Some people are still mad at him…including my better half.

But would June take on a program that was currently successful? I think he loves those fix-it-up jobs where you can’t do worse.

  310. Curt February 8, 2011 1:03 am

One could hardly have done worse than UH and SMU when June took over.

  311. Pomai February 8, 2011 1:05 am

al they are going to have a good season, you need to come to the games, see some balls hit into the tennis court. Their dance card will be full.

  312. al February 8, 2011 1:14 am

    curt…no one should be upset with jj. he left because of two things;

one, he was frustrated with the cards that he was dealt by the old fumbler. lack of budget, improvements, and all those frustrating things that were promised but never went in to plan. poor pay for his coaches. note; he never complained of his own salary. he could see that things would not get better under hf and for some reasons upper campus turned the other cheek.

two, he knew that the only way things would change is if he left. then all the opala would come out for all to see.

his heart still remains in hawaii.

I don’t really care about a coach who can recruit east of the Mississippi. I want a coach that can recruit locally. We have all the talent that we need in Hawaii. If we were able to keep all the good recruits in Hawaii, then we wouldn’t have to be searching east of the Mississippi to get our players.

I don’t know enough about these coaches to suggest one or the other. But for a special teams coach, I would like McKnight. My heart says to pick Tomey because he has done a lot for Hawaii football. I don’t know anything about McCloud, so I can’t say anything about him although I would like some younger coaches.

    Gmorning gang!

Chad Owens has decided to stay in Toronto. Said he wants to be part of something special.

The looming lockout could have played a factor.

  330. chawan_cut February 8, 2011 6:41 am

can’t believe he’s taking this foul thing higher up. did he not see the free k5 replay at 1030pm?

  331. gmahoney February 8, 2011 6:43 am

No class, Newlee. Maybe we should take his post game handshake behavior to the WAC.

  332. d1島 February 8, 2011 6:43 am

    Great Morning All!

    No HiHo today. Hmmm…wattudu?

  333. 808ike February 8, 2011 7:04 am

    rage777,

Must agree with homey. Primary example is Woman’s VB. There are many young local woman who are involved with volleyball at the collegiate level. Coach Shoji first priority is recruiting local talent. He understands to be a Top 25 team or to be competitive, he can’t have an all local VB team. A great local talented player comes around once every 3-4 years. He’s successful because of recruitment from out-of-state.

  334. LizKauai -iPad February 8, 2011 7:11 am

Re ID Coach- people usually accuse others of what they hold in their own hearts.
Remember the brewhaha from the Fresno lady about the nasty Hawaii fans?
Wow- that blew my mind and almost made me go look for a screwdriver to bring to the next game!
    😆
    Barking dogs are boring. 🙄

Showing my age, but here’s my favorites — Jack Benny, Bob Newhart, Bill Cosby, Jonathan Winters, Red Skelton, Pat Morita and the still cookin’ Robin Williams.

  336. wowlaulau February 8, 2011 7:24 am

Does recruiting experience to Baylor really show the ability to recruit to hawaii? Does contacts in Texas translate to getting them singed for Hawaii? and the most important question, is he a good secondary coach?

  337. Shoko February 8, 2011 8:37 am

    Morning folks!

I would say that McCloud was not an effective secondary coach at Nevada or Baylor. The last few years at Nevada indicated a lackluster secondary that rated near the bottom tier in pass defense. Same with Baylor. However, when you get a new DC (Bennet), there will be changes. One of the reasons McCloud got hired to Baylor, along with Babers was because of Brian Norwood, another UH alumni. Unfortunately, Norwood is no longer DC and I’m certain McCloud must have seen this coming. Will McCloud be a better fit in terms of Speacial Teams? Thats up to Coach Mack to decide.

    Re: UH having a carnival.
Back in Fall 1959, UH had a carnival to raise money for a student union bldg. First and only carnival, by the way, what happened to the money? 5 years later when I graduated, I had not heard of what happened to the money. By now, with interest, that money should have grown to $17M.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

  452. coach kristin March 2, 2011 11:52 pm

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

  457. bathroom extractor fans March 3, 2011 3:43 pm

Sorry for the huge review, but I’m really loving the new Hunter line of fans, and hope this, as well as the excellent reviews some other people have written, will help you decide if it’s the right choice for you.

  458. Coach Purses March 3, 2011 3:43 pm

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

  459. Gucci Watches March 3, 2011 4:30 pm

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

Hi, possibly i’m being a little off topic here, but I was browsing your site and it looks stimulating. I’m writing a blog and trying to make it look neat, but everytime I touch it I mess something up. Did you design the blog yourself? Could someone with little experience do it, and add updates without messing it up? Anyways, good information on here, very informative.

  500. Malcolm Higgens March 6, 2011 8:33 am

No snobbery intended here, but I have to mention that all credibility goes out the window when typos and misspellings are present on a website, regardless of the design. Particularly one that is expounding the virtues of quality web design. I’ve only made it about 1/3 through the article before I felt compelled to comment on it.nice

Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
