Mouse still 50-50

By Stephen Tsai on April 19, 2011

Mouse Davis said he remains 50-50 on whether he will return as the Warriors’ receivers coach next season. The Warriors concluded spring training yesterday with position meetings in the morning and a team video session in the afternoon. Evaluations and exit interviews will be conducted this week. Davis said he returns to his home in Portland next week. * * * * * * The Hartford Colonials of the United Football League will have tryouts in Atlanta, Houston and Hartford […]

Hartford acquires Brennan’s UFL rights

By Stephen Tsai on April 18, 2011

Former UH quarterback Colt Brennan confirmed that the Hartford Colonials have acquired his United Football League rights. Hartford’s head coach is Jerry Glanville, a former UH defensive coordinator. Brennan and Glanville were together at UH during Brennan’s sophomore and junior seasons in 2005 and 2006. Brennan said he has not signed a contract nor reached an agreement with the Colonials. An NFL offer made before July 11 would supersede the UFL rights; the NFL, currently in a lockout, cannot make […]

Gray matters

By Stephen Tsai on April 17, 2011

Much has been made of the success of the Warriors’ walk-on program. Another successful endeavor is the Warriors’ grayshirt program. Started by former UH head coach Bob Wagner, the tactic is to sign a player but then delay his enrollment by at least a semester. This gives the player time to develop physically and academically (he can enroll as a part-time student in the fall without triggering his eligibility clock). The player then can participate in spring training the semester […]

Junior Day; Warrior Bowl recap

By Stephen Tsai on April 16, 2011

This morning, the Warriors hosted about 90 high school juniors (who happen to be football prospects). The players and their parents toured the UH campus and facilities; met with coaches, academic advisers and counselors; and participated in a Q&A session on college life. Because this was considered a mass unofficial visit, parents and prospects must pay for their own refreshments. Cool to see AD Jim Donovan’s son take the tour, accompanied by his mom, Kinda Shy. * * * * […]

Unheralded players to be featured

By Stephen Tsai on April 15, 2011

Tonight’s Warrior Bowl should be viewed the same way as a baseball spring-training game. It will be a good chance to see some unheralded players get work. But don’t expect to see the No. 1 receivers or quarterback Bryant Moniz play more than a couple of series. This will be the final audition for on-the-bubble players. * * * * * The volleyball Warriors received a favorable road matchup when it learned it will face UC Irvine in the April […]

Follow-up plans

By Stephen Tsai on April 14, 2011

This spring training was marked by injuries to key players. What happens when they return? • Linebacker Corey Paredes, who was the Warriors’ leading tackler in 2010, has served as a player-coach while recovering from shoulder surgery. For depth chart purposes, Art Laurel has been his replacement. Scheme wise, with the creation of the elephant position (rush end/linebacker combo), Laurel will remain in the lineup in most packages. Meanwhile, Paredes, a co-captain,  will return as an every-down linebacker, playing mostly […]

Big Wednesday

By Stephen Tsai on April 13, 2011

“Big Wednesday” was one of the best surf movies. Ever. OK, on to today’s football practice: • With roster cuts expected as early as next week, a full-contact 7-on-7 scrimmage was arranged for the final period of practice. Defensive back Gus Cunningham, battling for a roster spot, had two big hits — on wideout Jett Jasper and slotback Justin Clapp. • Cornerback Terry Wilson, who was on the second-team defense, had his best practice of spring training. He is in […]

Times have changed

By Stephen Tsai on April 12, 2011

In 2009, at the request (pleading?) of Fresno State, UH moved its kickoffs for home WAC games an hour earlier, to 5:05 p.m. That allowed visiting teams a chance to make the redeye flights that night, saving them the cost of an extra night’s hotel stay. Last year, based on a survey, the kickoffs were moved to 5:35 p.m. Now, based on another survey, the kickoffs will be at 6:05 p.m. this season, when rival Fresno State plays at Aloha […]
