Mouse still 50-50

Mouse Davis said he remains 50-50 on whether he will return as the Warriors’ receivers coach next season.

The Warriors concluded spring training yesterday with position meetings in the morning and a team video session in the afternoon. Evaluations and exit interviews will be conducted this week. Davis said he returns to his home in Portland next week.

The Hartford Colonials of the United Football League will have tryouts in Atlanta, Houston and Hartford next month. Head coach Jerry Glanville, a former UH defensive coordinator, said he could not work out an arrangement to stage a tryout in Hawaii. “If we had one in Hawaii,” Glanville said, “I bet I could find at least four offensive linemen.”

Former UH safety Leonard Peters, who competes with the U.S. rugby team, is now a stevadore, according to former Warrior running back Nate Ilaoa.

  2. koakane April 19, 2011 7:23 am

why is mouse so undecided about returning?

  3. Stephen Tsai April 19, 2011 7:30 am

If Mouse were to leave, at least UH has initiated a transition phase. Ashley Lelie, a student assistant who is allowed to coach, tutored many of the receivers during the spring.

Would Lelie be a candidate if Mouse left? Don’t know. But Lelie will be back in the fall, in some capacity, so the continuity has been established.

  4. gigi-hawaii April 19, 2011 7:30 am

Interesting tidbit about Leonard Peters. I hear that stevedores are very well paid. Is he employed in Honolulu?

  5. BG April 19, 2011 7:31 am

Guud morn’n kk! As much as I love the Mouse, my belief is that when you’re so undecided, it’s time to hang it up…no way you can give it 100% if you’re so ambivalent. Time to kick back and enjoy the time left. jmo

  6. Stephen Tsai April 19, 2011 7:31 am

I told Mouse he can’t leave because he can’t pass on a chance to coach somebody named Promise.

  7. gigi-hawaii April 19, 2011 7:32 am

    ST,

has Lelie graduated from UH yet? History major, right?

  8. BG April 19, 2011 7:32 am

I remember when I bought my first car. I was told I had to pay “dock” fees. I’m thinking, why the heck do I have to pay fees to the guys working at the docks. Then I realized it meant documents. Although, I’m pretty sure my original premise might be partially correct.

  13. Stephen Tsai April 19, 2011 7:36 am

He’s pretty close to earning a degree. He left UH after his junior year in good standing.

My Thai friend took over 10 years to graduate from UH. During that time, she was told that she would have to re-take certain courses if they had been taken more than 10 years ago.

Hope that doesn’t apply to pro-players who return to college!

  34. NCAA April 19, 2011 8:45 am

Mouse is 50-50 on whether he will leave UH.

Stevedore sounds like someone who fights bovines.

  35. Garret April 19, 2011 9:02 am

I hope that Mouse stays, but if he leaves then Lelie would be a great option for the Warriors. However, if Mouse leaves before Lelie gets his degree, it would appear that UH would have to hire someone else and the plan would not work.

  36. haka April 19, 2011 9:04 am

    #34 NCAA

  37. Garret April 19, 2011 9:06 am

ESPN is looking to throw BIG dollars at the Big East. I think in this case basketball is valued as much or more than football in the TV deal. The Big East has 17 basketball teams (more than any conference), are prominent in big TV markets, and obviously have a lot of success with their basketball programs. Getting *huge* ratings for their conference tournament this year, 11 teams in March Madness this year, and the national champion was timed perfectly for them. It looks like they will get 3x or 4x more than they get now.

Big thing to note that ESPN wants to negotiate 2 years before a contract expires to fend off competitors. That means that they will approach the Big 12 in 2014…the Big 12 will have a big incentive to add 2 teams in 2014 instead of 2015, which makes those dominoes come a year earlier.

ESPN currently pays the Big East an average of $36 million annually as part of a six-year contract for all of its sports. While initial numbers being floated may not be as rich as the ESPN/ACC deal that was struck last spring, it would still mark a major boost for the 16-team conference.

Sources indicate the early numbers range from $110 million to $130 million annually, but conference sources describe those figures as a starting point for any negotiation. The initial offer would fall short of the $155 million annual payout the ACC will receive from ESPN in a deal that kicks in this summer. But the bold push by ESPN shows the network wants to lock down college rights in the face of increasing competition.

Just last week, the Big 12 verified that Fox intends to be a significant player in the college rights space with its 13-year, $90 million per year deal that more than quadrupled the $20 million the conference was getting in its previous cable arrangement.

Earlier this year, Fox Sports agreed to pay Conference USA a total of $42 million for its rights over five years.

if i am not mistaken…if mouse leaves this year, lelie can still help out the program as a student manager for one more year.

    Al,

That is true. However, UH would probably hire a WR coach to replace Mouse…and what happens to that coach after Lelie graduates?

  49. Da Punchbowl Kid April 19, 2011 9:51 am

    Mr. Tsai,

Is Mouse looking to retire or maybe coach elsewhere? He has made an enor”mouse” difference working with our receivers.

  50. Garret April 19, 2011 9:53 am

BSU hasn’t even started playing in the MWC and already the blue turf complaints have started. SDSU’s head coach faced BSU twice when he was head coach at New Mexico–I think BSU won by 11 on the blue turf and won by 17 at New Mexico.

“I think they ought to get rid of that blue turf. I think it’s unfair,” said Long, the former New Mexico coach who is in his first season as the Aztecs’ head coach.

When asked to expand, Long said, “it takes the visiting team a quarter or two to get used to that different field.”

Long said players “track the ball differently” on the blue turf, particularly since Boise State traditionally wears all-blue uniforms on the blue turf.

  57. tommui April 19, 2011 10:36 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

I suppose Ashley Lelie could coach the receivers as a student manager as he is doing it right now but more on a full-time basis. Is there a NCAA rules on that?

If that is possible, why hire another coach for the coming season if you want Lelie to do it in the future?

  58. al April 19, 2011 11:19 am

    tommui…ditto.

    ST (and everyone) —

What do you think about the new rules the NCAA recently adopted: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/football/ncaa/04/15/ncaa-rules-changes.ap/index.html

  63. gigi-hawaii April 19, 2011 11:37 am

I think the new rules sound reasonable. Let’s see them enforce them.

  64. Stephen Tsai April 19, 2011 11:57 am

    I like the 10-second rule.

Not so sure I like the idea about the excessive-celebration. I mean, c’mon, these are young people. They get emotional.

  65. Hilo-Warrior April 19, 2011 12:01 pm

@ST But that is where people view College Sports as Pro. If they make a rule like this than the Student athlete picture is slightly blurred. That is how I feel anyway.

  66. warriorsun April 19, 2011 12:02 pm

several mos ago i raised the “will mouse return” issue bc of inside-chatter. the response received from this board was it was a “slam-dunk” and “you can take it to the bank” mouse would return. Now, the prospect of his fall status has whittled down to 50-50. rather than tracking rumors, sometimes it’s best to find the switch that pulls the trigger (hint: X will need to become eligible by summer 2011) .

  67. Kazz April 19, 2011 12:04 pm

    Deduction of points for “taunting”???

Excessive celebration is defined as ‘taunting’ so does this mean if a team is busy hugging and doing that mid-air body bump longer than normal they can lose points??? Because we have all seen flags flying for that MANINI stuff.

The posturing after a hit or standing over an injured opponent is a gray area to me.

This is football. This isn’t ballroom dancing.

I’d rather see misconduct or questionable hits to the head punished by a deduction of points. At least these are areas where a young man’s well-being can be effected. The taunting stuff that is not-physical is harmless and if that player get’s his feelings hurt, then he should go home.

Same thing with the people complaining about booing the visting team. This isn’t the special olympics. The home crowd WANTS to see the visting crowd lose. Well, in Hawaii depends on the spread I guess…. 🙄 🙄 🙄

  68. OTTO April 19, 2011 12:09 pm

I don’t like the example of high stepping into the end zone, I think it was two years ago maybe longer, one of UH slots broke a tackle near the 5-yd line by high stepping out of the DB’s grasp around his lower legs… I vaguely remember he got called for excessive celebration…. does anyone remember that? Or am I hallucinating?

  69. d1shima April 19, 2011 12:12 pm

Can’t make out if OTTO is coming or going?

  70. al April 19, 2011 12:16 pm

the mouse on the fence has long been bandied about. without disclosing some of the reasons for his exodus if that should come about, many of us have never denied the reality of this possibility. it is what it is as they say.

the mouse was good for rolo, in the sense that rolo sucked it all in as a good sponge should. rolo’s thirst for knowledge is one of the things that make him such a suitable head coach candidate down the road. if he can extract a bit more from the likes of the mouser than that is fine. however, if the mouse chooses to pack it up, so be it.

perhaps rolo will have the chance to choose his own receivers coach whether it be lelie or not. if anything he’ll have more ammunition in the recruiting processes.

st has made no bones about this on many an occasion even before the season ended.

  71. Mari April 19, 2011 12:30 pm

Leonard Peters! You are my hero forever!!

    I’m always cheering for you!!!

  72. bigislandkurt April 19, 2011 12:33 pm

Aren’t all former UH players stevedores?

    BIK

  73. d1shima April 19, 2011 12:36 pm

    BIK,

Only da ones who can pass da test.

  74. Warrior Expat April 19, 2011 12:57 pm

I’m really worried about the rule allowing points to be taken off the board for “taunting.” Officiating is difficult enough (and the calls questionable enough) when the rule itself is fairly well defined. Calling a false start, or a block in the back, or a hold is theoretically simple enough — and the refs don’t even get those calls right all the time.

Doing something as drastic as taking points off the board for something as nebulous as taunting seems like a recipe for disaster to me. Is high-stepping taunting? How about slowing down before the goal line because everyone has stopped chasing you? How about holding out the ball as you cross the line? Is it “Hollywooding” it aka Kapernick, or is it just trying to make sure you break the plane?

Point is my answer will be different from yours will be different from the linesman will be different from the head ref. I don’t like this change at all.

  75. Curt April 19, 2011 12:57 pm

#59 Oh no. Here go again. Another subterranean message from al that I’ll have to decipher. Okay…not Crowder or Odunsi but a slasher and a dasher. Hmmm. Dasher? Is al suggesting the recruit is a reindeer from the group of Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen, and Rudolph fame? That must be it; according to al, our next recruit is a reindeer!

  76. Da Punchbowl Kid April 19, 2011 1:09 pm

Thass the good ole NCAA for ya!

I got a new rule for the NCAA – The NCAA shall enforce their own rules fairly and eqally.

Oh, and here’s another one – No more BCS system!

  77. Stephen Tsai April 19, 2011 1:22 pm

Mouse has been muttering about leaving since October. Part of it is family reasons. But nobody walks away from a six-figure job. Shoot, I’m short, tell jokes, don’t recruit and am older than Rolo. I’ll take the job if he doesn’t want it.

  78. d1shima April 19, 2011 1:25 pm

but can you tell a guy what makes a choice route sizzle?

  79. Stephen Tsai April 19, 2011 1:29 pm

    d1shima:

I’d say: “Hey, ask Ashley. What the heck are we paying his tuition for?”

  80. Stephen Tsai April 19, 2011 1:32 pm

I don’t like the points-deducted-for-taunting rule, but I also am glad that the rule is uniform for regulation and overtime. Thought it was weird to have that rule only apply for OT in 2010. I think the rules shouldn’t change during the game.

  81. d1shima April 19, 2011 1:33 pm

    😆

  82. Stephen Tsai April 19, 2011 1:33 pm

If you don’t want players to celebrate, then tell fans not to taunt. We can all sit there, arms folded as we watch games in silence.

Besides, what is excessive celebration? There’s a limit on celebration?

  83. Stephen Tsai April 19, 2011 1:35 pm

    d1:

Maybe they have to do the cop thing: OK, we’ve got one offer here. If you don’t take it, we’ve got Craig Stutzmann in the next room.

  84. Warrior Expat April 19, 2011 1:36 pm

    ST, well said.

    “You can’t legislate virtue.”

  85. d1shima April 19, 2011 1:37 pm

I don’t get the rules prohibiting a Student Manager from “assisting” a player with playing tips (Coaching, I guess). After all, they allow student tutors in Chemistry and History, don’t they?

  86. Stephen Tsai April 19, 2011 1:38 pm

So, I’m thinking, the Knicks should save the $14 million, say goodbye to Chauncy “Mr. Big (Brick) Shot” Billups, and keep Anthony Carter.

AC is quick, plays aggressive defense and passes the ball. I like my point guards to be passers.

  87. Stephen Tsai April 19, 2011 1:41 pm

I think Lelie got that other classification, student assistant, which allows him to coach/tutor. He’s not a student manager. By the way, Jackie and Kyle are becoming the Jordan-Pippen of student managers. They do it all.

  88. gigi-hawaii April 19, 2011 1:47 pm

    ST,

D’Antoni should get Steve Nash as pg. Fantastico! So he has to do a trade? Trade Billups!

  89. RedZone April 19, 2011 1:47 pm

Holy crap the WAC officials have enough problems without having to decifer the new rules. I can see them calling a timeout huddling midfield bringing out the rule book then not being able to come up with an answer calling the league office for a ruling.

  90. SteveM April 19, 2011 1:48 pm

So, ESPN televising the UH-SJSU football game is a good thing, right?

    …especially on the mainland.

Is ESPN looking at other UH games to change date/time slot?

  91. RedZone April 19, 2011 1:48 pm

ST next time you talk to Mack put on some mouse ears. Maybe he’ll get the message.

  92. gigi-hawaii April 19, 2011 1:48 pm

Is Nash still injured? but not for long, right? how old is he? 35 or 36? still got the moves!

  93. gigi-hawaii April 19, 2011 1:50 pm

the worst thing the Celtics did was to get rid of Kendrick Perkins, their star.

  94. Stephen Tsai April 19, 2011 1:52 pm

Jermaine O’Neal isn’t so bad, especially since they apparently outlawed goal-tending for the playoffs.

  95. Stretch April 19, 2011 1:54 pm

In case anyone was on the Hawaiian redeye to Seattle on Fri Sept 9 (for the Washington game on Saturday) it is changed to a 145pm departure, arriving Friday night.

  96. Stephen Tsai April 19, 2011 1:54 pm

I think awarding a three-FT penalty should be allowed only if the shooter can actually make a 3. Which brings me to Rondo …

  97. Michigan Warrior April 19, 2011 1:55 pm

The way I’m reading that taunting rule is…

Points will be taken away, and it will be a spot foul if prior to crossing the endzone.

If already in the endzone when the taunting or whatever occurs, then it will be marked off on the extra point attempt or kickoff, depending on when it happens.

If an opponent is giving chase and goes for your legs as you’re nearing the endzone, I don’t see how they can call high-stepping as taunting in that scenario. I mean, not if you’re trying to evade that tackle, right? Or is it one of these “high-stepping is high-stepping, and now totally disallowed.”

As far as Coach Mouse goes…

I think we all kinda knew he was only half in, half out to begin with. I mean, I think he came over to help out and “mentor”, as was mentioned last year. I hope our coaches learned enough from him to move on with confidence and success, no matter what Coach Mouse decides to do. Would like to see him at least one more year, but “if no can… no can”.

  98. Stephen Tsai April 19, 2011 1:55 pm

    Stretch:

That’s a good thing because a kickoff time hasn’t been set.

  99. Michigan Warrior April 19, 2011 1:56 pm

    99?

  100. Michigan Warrior April 19, 2011 1:56 pm

    100?

  101. gigi-hawaii April 19, 2011 1:57 pm

lol. I guess ST is watching the playoffs now that football season is finally over.

  102. Stephen Tsai April 19, 2011 1:57 pm

Good thing the NCAA isn’t in the horse-racing business.

There are a lot of high-steppin’ thoroughbreds. Secretariat would be the Dwight Howard of horse racing.

  103. gigi-hawaii April 19, 2011 1:58 pm

nah, Secretariat knew how to WIN!

  104. Stephen Tsai April 19, 2011 1:59 pm

I just realized I’m old enough to remember when dunking wasn’t allowed in NCAA basketball. It was a form of taunting.

  105. gigi-hawaii April 19, 2011 2:00 pm

Howard made 40+ pts but the Magic still lost. remember that game?

  106. gigi-hawaii April 19, 2011 2:01 pm

so is the trend now to make NCAA rules more like pro-ball rules? I think that makes sense. After all, don’t most student athletes want to make it to the pros? Less of an adjustment.

  107. Michigan Warrior April 19, 2011 2:02 pm

Imagine Secretariat being flagged (and the winnings nullified) for high-stepping! He was taunting the other horses AND jockeys! haha!

Dang! We’re talking about horse-racing now! Weird!

  108. RedZone April 19, 2011 2:02 pm

To stop taunting just give the points to the opponents. If that doesn’t stop it I don’t know what will.

  109. Michigan Warrior April 19, 2011 2:04 pm

#108… Redzone… now that would catch people’s attention! Gotta watch out for crooked refs even more in that case!

  110. Stephen Tsai April 19, 2011 2:05 pm

Best way to stop taunting? Don’t give up the winning touchdown.

  111. gigi-hawaii April 19, 2011 2:07 pm

hey, taunt in your living room like me! one of the perks of ppv. lol

  112. mctruck April 19, 2011 2:08 pm

gigi, ur #93….Perkins always had a habut look on his face like he was angry wit something-anything? imop, he was just too slow and it bogged the team down on transition. Too often he never new what to do with the ball once he got it.

  113. gigi-hawaii April 19, 2011 2:09 pm

    mctruck,

wot!!! Without Shaq, the celtics wish they had Perkins back.

  114. madeinhawaii April 19, 2011 2:09 pm

eh… too many rules will ruin the game. The only rules that should matter are those that give unfair advantage and those that prevent serious injury.

  115. Michigan Warrior April 19, 2011 2:09 pm

#104… ST… When I was growing up, one of my best friends could dunk at a fairly young age. Even though he knew better, during a state tournament, with us up by 20+ and just a minute left, he was on a breakaway and jammed it. Got called for a technical and kicked out of the game. Coach was mad, but we laughed about it all the way home. That was the first time in my life I had seen a dunk in a live game.

  116. RedZone April 19, 2011 2:10 pm

I think there is more taunting in basketball.

  117. RedZone April 19, 2011 2:10 pm

Got et em Hannah T-T. may your wind blow. And watch out for the mano.

  118. mctruck April 19, 2011 2:12 pm

    gigi,

yeah, I know…but who would have thought the big guy was going down again???…the celts just need a younger, faster center…like a Gasol? just sayin.

  119. RedZone April 19, 2011 2:14 pm

The best center I have seen was Hakeem da Dream.

  120. gigi-hawaii April 19, 2011 2:16 pm

speaking of Pau Gasol, isn’t his kid brother something to look at? So cuuuute! from a gal’s pt of view, obviously.

  125. NCAA April 19, 2011 2:48 pm

    Golf needs taunting.

  126. NCAA April 19, 2011 2:52 pm

Eh Mr. Woods! What’s the difference between a lion and a tiger?

    Tigers cheat!

Dr Kaloi (Dentist), Dr Sherry (Ophthalmologist), JD Ching, etc., a few engineers, boku educators. LOL…some went on to play in the NFL, invested their money wisely and are set for life.

  128. Warrior Expat April 19, 2011 3:10 pm

    @97 Michigan Warrior:

“If an opponent is giving chase and goes for your legs as you’re nearing the endzone, I don’t see how they can call high-stepping as taunting in that scenario. I mean, not if you’re trying to evade that tackle, right? Or is it one of these “high-stepping is high-stepping, and now totally disallowed.”

That’s exactly the problem. You don’t see how they could call high-stepping taunting in the scenario you describe, and I agree with you, but they still could. It’s a mushy rule with no objective criteria. We hope the refs are reasonable and won’t call that (or other similarly silly things), but what’s to stop them from doing so, saying that they considered it “taunting”?

@114 Made In Hawaii got it right: “The only rules that should matter are those that give unfair advantage and those that prevent serious injury.” Especially when the consequence of the rule is something as big as negating a score.

  129. madeinhawaii April 19, 2011 3:15 pm

    seasider…

Let’s not forget Shawn Ching da local newscaster with a Law Degree….or Kent Untermann who decided to forgo NFL tryouts after training at the Dallas Cowboys training camp… and turned a Swap Meet business into one that generates 15 million in sales locally each year.

  130. Stephen Tsai April 19, 2011 3:37 pm

AC should have played at the end. Toney Douglas is a terrible point guard.

  131. Stephen Tsai April 19, 2011 3:40 pm

Eric Hannum is an interesting success story. Started that PET imaging company. That’s big, as all people with internal problems — fractures, cancer — can attest. He also is a diabetic who is regularly checking his blood level. Plus, he’s a great guy.

  137. wafan April 19, 2011 4:03 pm

  138. al April 19, 2011 4:04 pm

  139. gigi-hawaii April 19, 2011 4:04 pm

    al,

Nash is flashier and more mesmerizing than AC to me, at least. But why can’t they be a duo together with the Knicks, especially with D’Antoni as coach?

  140. al April 19, 2011 4:05 pm

i guess the boss just contributed some coin to eric hannum’s retirement funds.

  141. al April 19, 2011 4:05 pm

the knicks don’t want to pay that kind of money to a forty year old pg.

  142. gigi-hawaii April 19, 2011 4:06 pm

    al,

the last time I saw Nash was at the UH class reunion in 2009. He had a very pleasant smile on his face. Very laid back, maybe too laid back and nice to be a head coach.

Can’t see Nash tossing his jacket like Riley used to do.

  143. gigi-hawaii April 19, 2011 4:07 pm

    Nash isn’t 40. more like 35.

    137 days until Colorado kickoff.

NFL just released their schedule today. If there isn’t a strike/lockout still going on, tour operators may offer this package:

Oct 14 Hawaii @ San Jose St.

    Oct 16 Cleveland @ Oakland

The 49ers are out of town that week.

…or even this tour package for SJSU game:

    Oct 13 USC @ CAL

Oct 14 Hawaii @ San Jose St.

    Oct 16 Cleveland @ Oakland

Wonder if they’ll have the same announcers for both college games.

In case anyone was on the Hawaiian redeye to Seattle on Fri Sept 9 (for the Washington game on Saturday) it is changed to a 145pm departure, arriving Friday night.

In other news, no change likely in the Sept. 10 8:00am ETA of the cruise ships docking in Seattle after a 7-night Alaska cruise. Roll off the ship after breakfast, check in or leave baggage at your hotel, and go to the tailgate/stadium. 🙂

Tsai-ko Cruiser news for April should be out this week (still focusing on cruise options in conjunction with WA and/or UNLV games). email me if you want to receive notice.

    Taunting evolved from……

Sportsmanship was paramount as a kid

If you mouthed off, your coach got rid of you (From a two time loser big mouth who became a Yell Leader instead)

Punishment should be that you sit for a quarter

PT is a great incentive to behave

BSU can play on the blue turf if they wear all pink uniforms. Pink helmet, pink jersey, pink pants, pink socks and pink cleats.

  158. WahineSoftballFan April 19, 2011 6:29 pm

    Kazz,

The Men’s MPSF Quarterfinal Volleyball Game will be televised live, with the Softball Games to follow, on a DELAYED BASIS, immediately after the Volleyball game.

  159. Warriorbacker April 19, 2011 6:38 pm

Playoff ( away) games should always get priority over regular league games. Good choice KFVE.

  160. Warriorbacker April 19, 2011 6:41 pm

Why doesnt UH just change the softball times so both can be shown live?

  161. whitey April 19, 2011 6:46 pm

interesting take on taunting. i wonda if the taunting rule applied to gladiators when the tigers were released and the people in the stands showed thumbs down.

    Warriorbacker:

    April 19th, 2011 at 6:41 pm

Why doesnt UH just change the softball times so both can be shown live?

No no no no… we’re not going to screw with the other team’s travel plans. These are made in advance based around the schedule prepared months ago with UH, BSU, and the WAC involved.

  163. Kazz April 19, 2011 6:51 pm

As long as UH softball is televised this Saturday in some fashion.

This is supposed to be their LAST home game to be televised this season. “Last” meaning “senior videos” will be aired following the game even though it’s not really senior night.

K-5’s got Merrie Monarch to do next weekend when the REAL senior night occurs.

  164. whitey April 19, 2011 6:52 pm

my opinion don’t count, but just thinking if coach mouse leaves, he deserves a standing ovation and cheers of thanks from UH. he also deserves to enjoy his retirement years and do whatever he wants. he would always be welcomed to help with fb clinics if he desires. Coach Mouse, however you decide, thank you for all the great things you have done for UH and the football program in the USA.

  165. whitey April 19, 2011 6:55 pm

as for his replacement, i would leave that to coach mc and his staff. they will have to live with that decision. there are many coaches to choose from all the football programs.

  166. whitey April 19, 2011 6:56 pm

and lastly, coach mc has done a pretty good job at hiring asst coaches for da warriors.

  167. Curt April 19, 2011 7:10 pm

Life is short. I say Mouse should spend the time traveling and relaxing with family. Hopefully, he’s been able to share much of his knowledge with Rolo and the others. A big mahalo to you coach.

  168. Guy in the office April 19, 2011 7:25 pm

    for the golf team?

  192. gigi-hawaii April 19, 2011 9:10 pm

I guess after your heart attack, you stopped covering BB and switched to VB?

  193. al April 19, 2011 9:10 pm

#181…is my redo. i hit the submit before i could finish. i would never leave anyone out purposely. even tho’ i agree with st that one more guy will depart this team.

remember i said one by his own accord and one by exclusion.

  194. al April 19, 2011 9:11 pm

  198. Stephen Tsai April 19, 2011 9:19 pm

    Gigi:

Yep, covered both football and basketball together for more than a decade.

When the sports overlapped, wrote two or three stories each day.

A couple of years ago, I covered football in the morning, softball in the afternoon, and volleyball in the evening.

It’s not bad. It’s not like being a stevadore.

  199. Curt April 19, 2011 9:20 pm

    al,

#183 How do you do a redo? It’s nice to know that one can take something back and redo it on the blog. In life, that’s sometimes not the case.

volleyball in the evening, u mean

  201. Stephen Tsai April 19, 2011 9:21 pm

  206. gigi-hawaii April 19, 2011 9:27 pm

ST, well, I hope you tipped off the BB writer.

  207. Curt April 19, 2011 9:31 pm

    al & gigi,

Okay, okay. I got it. I thought al modified his original post, #179. But, he didn’t. He just cut and pasted on a new post.

  208. gigi-hawaii April 19, 2011 9:32 pm

ST, btw, stevedore is spelled with 3 Es, no A. I googled it.

A stevedore operates a crane on dock to unload cargo from ships.

what’s the danger element? sometimes the crane tips over and kills the stevedore.

  210. gigi-hawaii April 19, 2011 9:34 pm

can you imagine Leonard Peters up there in a crane?

  211. Curt April 19, 2011 9:36 pm

    ST,

With such an excellent group of receivers available, do you think our offense will rotate them or just do as we’ve been doing for years by playing one group pretty much most of the time?

  212. homey ℞ April 19, 2011 9:51 pm

    … a snapshot from blog history….

On April 17 in the first year (2007) of The Warrior Beat blog, the blog master of disguise undergoes transmogrification into “Inspector Kid”, who sorts through the mystery of the missing and elusive 13th game. A new troll, “Football Fan” appears.

    Inspector Kid

Comment from: Da Punchbowl Kid [Visitor]

*Suspenseful sounding music fills the air, there is mystery on the blog…

“Madeinhawaii, interesting point my dear fellow. But whomever has been posting these predictions seems so sure of themselves. They have that air of intelligence and smugness about them that suggests that they are one of those most crafty of devils… a sportswriter. Could our man Keahi actually be the infamous Robert Kekaula??!!”

The suspenseful music peaks and somewhere in the distance, a hound howls. Inspector Kid gazes out the window as he smokes from one of those big ass pipes with the lid on it, you know, the kind that famous detectives used to smoke…*

    04/17/07 @ 14:15

Comment from: Da Punchbowl Kid [Visitor]

*Inspector Kid takes another puff, deep in thought… He thinks to himself: ‘I wonder what certain fans of football in here have been smoking?’ In the back ground, eeerie organ music fades as the Inpector stares out the window*

    04/17/07 @ 14:24

    Comment from: al [Visitor]

inspector now, eh? a guess being rep wasn’t what you wanted?

so, inspector clouseau did he smoke a pipe or was it inspector gadget?

you like one pink panther or pink salmon?

    04/17/07 @ 14:48

Comment from: Da Punchbowl Kid [Visitor]

*Inspector Kid views the conversation. In his view, the Fan of Football’s assertions were so utterly ridiculous and without merit, that the Inspector didn’t even wish to respond to the poor fellow’s gibberish…

But back to the “Keahi” question. A UH athletics insider perhaps. The only way to know would be to wait for the announcement of the presumed 13th game. That announcement might be long in coming. If at all… (hound howls again)

“Find out more in future episodes of the Inspector’s adventures in: ‘The Keahi question and the curse of the 13th game.'”*

    04/17/07 @ 15:18

    Comment from: homey [Visitor]

Reminds me of a joke that has many variations:

Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson are going camping. They pitch their tent under the stars and go to sleep. Sometime in the middle of the night Holmes wakes Watson up. “Watson, look up at the stars, and tell me what you deduce.” Watson says, “I see millions of stars and even if a few of those have planets, it’s quite likely there are some planets like Earth, and if there are a few planets like Earth out there, there might also be life.” Holmes replied: “Watson, you idiot, somebody stole our tent!”

    04/17/07 @ 15:54

Comment from: Da Punchbowl Kid [Visitor]

*Eerie music fills the blog again. Inspector Kid puffs on his pipe, thinking to himself:’The mystery surrounded by a puzzle which is wrapped up in a question mark continues… “Keahi” has resurfaced. Unlikely that Keahi is the beautful Liz Chun… she would know both Leaheys. Claims to know but one Leahey but is not a Leahey himself. Continues to post short sharp messages of just one sentence… very cagey indeed. Definitely not a Leahey because they would not have acted on my earlier challenge. Maybe I can draw this “Keahi” charecter further out. Let’s give that a try…’ The inspector turns to address the blog.

“I say, Keahi, dear chap, if in fact you are a chap, how can you be SO certain there will be a thirteenth regular season game? Pray, do tell, you have quite piqued our collective curiousities here.”

‘That being settled, there is this business of the Football Fan. I wonder if that fan is aware there have been a plethora of D1AA teams who are ducking a contest with young Mr. Brennan and the rest of Warriors in the upcoming season. Further, why would a very competent and serious big business such as an NFL franchise portend to offer young Brennan twenty plus million dollars US as a signing bonus if he were to play with them next season? And the linebackers? Hasn’t our new defensive coordinator called them the best group he’s ever been around? What on earth could this misguided fan be thinking?’

Interesting… very interesting indeed… Suspenseful music fades as the inspector prepares to take out the rubbish, as requested by Sweety, on this cool rainy spring eve.*

    04/17/07 @ 19:20

  214. al April 19, 2011 10:12 pm

i wonder if some of the new commits who haven’t tripped yet will be here for the men’s bb banquet. it would be a great time to meet the new teammates.

we might even have a prospect or two that night.

i know that the football team had several visit during the banquets. it made the difference in some cases.

    Re: 209-210

There’s usually 1 guy in the crane, the rest of the crew is in the cargo hold. It takes team work to load/off load cargo.

A good friend was crushed by a load that was not secured properly. Yes, they do make top dollar (over $125K), but it is dangerous work.

  216. RedZone April 19, 2011 10:33 pm

Wow how come so many players jumping ship?

  217. Curt April 19, 2011 10:36 pm

    al,

Aren’t you missing Tyler McDaniels from you list?

  218. Curt April 19, 2011 10:41 pm

With another player leaving, I believe we should have 2 more schollies available. I would think that Gib would want to hold at least one of those for next yr.

  219. d1shima April 19, 2011 10:42 pm

Become a stevedore? Some will tell you it takes a lot of Pride.

  220. al April 19, 2011 10:59 pm

  221. seasider April 19, 2011 11:06 pm

    #129 madeinhawaii

Or Athletic Director Jim Donovan, Mayor of Kauai Bernard Carvalho, Bob Nash long time basketball assistant coach and ex HC. LOL…Cal Poly’s football HC is an ex-UH football alumnus. Also a few football alumni are currently making a living as assistant coaches on the D1 level.

LOL..If someone could find the time and do the time consuming research, that list of ex-UH football athletes would show numerous making it in business, public service, having professional degrees, etc.

  222. Curt April 19, 2011 11:22 pm

    al,

I believe Tyler doesn’t need a scholarship because his father, Benjy Taylor, is an assistant coach for the MBB team. His tuition is covered by the school.

  223. al April 19, 2011 11:29 pm

curt…i am not sure if that is just so. i thought someone researched and found that such a policy does not exist. unless, of course it could have been a condition of employment.

Curt – #222 – you sure about that? When I worked at UH, staff/faculty could get tuition waivers for themselves, but no mention was made of waivers for dependents. I know that at some private colleges, like the one I went to, tuition waivers were available for dependents of faculty/staff after a certain tenure.

  231. SteveM April 20, 2011 1:08 am

    RE: #215

In the days of the cargo ships with holds and ‘tween decks, when package cargo was loaded and unloaded by booms and winches and much manpower… the workers on the ships were stevedores and the people working on the docks were called longshoreman.

In the days of containerization, the distinction and duties tend to merge. Maybe someone working in the maritime freight industry can tell us the difference today, if any.

The loading and unloading of military explosives and munitions on those old ships required a USCG explosive loading supervisory detail. Navy could request a team…and usually did. Yes, very dangerous job, even without explosives.

Reading that article this morning about UH paying travel costs to Hawaii for MWC fb teams and BW teams in certain sports????….does UH recieve the same in return?, or does this sound like an unbalanced situation where it seems to me, UH is coming out on the short-end???

What is this?, “pay to play?”

“Travel is a concern of mine, especially when we have to go there,” San Diego State coach Rocky Long said during a call with conference media yesterday.

Well, “Duh!” Does that mean Coach Rocky is concerned about the Warriors’ travel there, too?

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.
