Joshua Walker gets invitation

By Stephen Tsai on May 21, 2011

Former UH volleyball player Joshua Walker leaves tomorrow to train with the U.S. national team that will compete in this year’s Pan Am Games. The best part, for Walker, is that UH will pay for his travel expenses. Even though Walker earned his bachelor’s degree a week ago, the NCAA allows schools to pay for the travel expenses for recent graduates participating in Olympic-qualifying events. Later this summer, Walker will compete in the World University Games. Eligibility is extended to […]

Warriors get WR transfer

By Stephen Tsai on May 20, 2011

The obstacles have been cleared, and receiver Charles Clay is set to transfer from SMU to UH. “He’s a good player,” SMU coach June Jones said. As a second-year freshman in 2010, Clay played in 12 games for SMU, mostly on special teams. Jones said he was told finances factored partly in Clay’s decision. The non-resident fee for tuition, school fees, room and board is $52,645 per year. Clay was a walk-on. Clay’s family is looking into a special rule […]

Honors for Ricketts, Iwata

By Stephen Tsai on May 19, 2011

Stephanie Ricketts and Jessica Iwata today were named to the West Region second team. Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association names the teams. * * * * * Oceanic Time Warner, which is set to take over production and distribution of UH sportscasts from K5, will conduct preliminary meetings today with potential on-air talent. By the way, I suppose the phrase “stay tuned” is obsolete, just like “broken record” and “dialed in.” * * * * * There still will be […]

College prep

By Stephen Tsai on May 18, 2011

Ratings change all of the time. Besides, when it comes to recruiting, there are different preferences for different schools. Someone’s top prospect might not be on another school’s list. That said, here’s one  analyst’s list of the state’s top college prospects entering the 2011 season: • Luke Kaumatule, defensive end, Punahou • DeForest Buckner, defensive end, Punahou • Pasoni Tasini, defensive end, Baldwin • Psalm Wooching, running back, Kealakehe • Shane Brostek, offensive lineman, Hawaii Prep • Kory Rasmussen, defensive […]

VB Warriors sign two

By Stephen Tsai on May 17, 2011

The volleyball Warriors signed Jan-Philipp Marks, a 6-5 outside hitter who plays for Germany’s Junior National team, and Taylor Averill, a 6-7 setter/outside hitter who redshirted as a UC Irvine freshman this year. UH coach Charlie Wade said Averill is skilled enough to also play middle blocker. Both will compete for vacancies created by the departures of outside hitter Joshua Walker and setter Nejc Zemljak. They are so-called “six-rotation” players who are skilled passers, defenders and hitters. * * * […]

Davone intervention

By Stephen Tsai on May 16, 2011

In the movie “Jerry Maguire,” the receiver’s wife talks about the “big four” of endorsements — shoe, car, clothing line, soft drink. Slot receiver Davone Bess, a former Warrior now with the Miami Dolphins, realized a two-for-one goal when he received an offer from adidas. While Bess is one of the NFL’s top slot receivers, that position usually commands only a four-figure cash contract. Instead, Bess agreed to work with adidas on the condition that he receive apparel instead of […]

Painting the town Green

By Stephen Tsai on May 15, 2011

Former UH running back Alex Green, the Green Bay Packers’ third-round draft choice this year, is one of 35 players invited to participate in this week’s NFL Rookie Premiere in Los Angeles. Major corporate sponsors, including all of the trading-card companies, are involved in the event. There will be photo shoots — Green will be wearing his Packers’ No. 39 — and interview sessions with the sponsors and media. * * * * * Here’s a preseason prediction: Be wary […]

Dan “Iceman” Kelly

By Stephen Tsai on May 14, 2011

How time flies on the mainland… This is Dan Kelly. It has been more than two years since I left the rock, and during my time away, a lot has happened.  I have played two seasons of soccer at an NAIA school, was recruited by a Premier Development League, and was hired as the head goalkeeping coach for the largest youth soccer club in California.  Needless to say, there has been a lot going on in my life,  but not […]
