Joshua Walker gets invitation
Former UH volleyball player Joshua Walker leaves tomorrow to train with the U.S. national team that will compete in this year’s Pan Am Games.
The best part, for Walker, is that UH will pay for his travel expenses. Even though Walker earned his bachelor’s degree a week ago, the NCAA allows schools to pay for the travel expenses for recent graduates participating in Olympic-qualifying events.
Later this summer, Walker will compete in the World University Games. Eligibility is extended to current student-athletes through graduates who have been out of school no more than 18 months. The Pan Am and WUG groups are different, but both should be helpful in building Walker’s resume for future work with the national team or pro opportunities overseas.

Well, apparently the Warriors will not be the only show in town when they play against Washington Sept. 10 at Husky Stadium.
Because of numerous events in Seattle, the Warriors will stay in Bellevue. The last time the Warriors played in Seattle, in 2009, they stayed in the Sheraton in downtown Seattle.
The Warriors face the same lodging problems for their game against San Jose State. They will be staying in Santa Clara.

Good Luck, Joshua Walker .
in Ferd’s column ….
” … The University of Hawaii and Brigham Young University signed an agreement last week intended to keep them playing each other in football almost annually through 2020.
The three-page document is sprinkled with contingencies and the kinds of terms — “tentative” and “preferred” — you don’t usually find in such contracts and, at one point, says they will meet “in either 2014 or ’16.”
I think UH asked him to hold on it because there were so many contingencies.
The deal is going to change many times over.
Five
Al,
Everyone was after them *before* UH offered. The recruit from Utah had offers from BYU and Utah before UH offered. The recruit from Gahr had offers from Utah, Arizona State, and Idaho before UH offered.
The complaint I’ve seen a lot is that other school copy UH and offer the players that UH offers. However, the complaint that everyone else is after a recruit before UH offers doesn’t really apply when the other schools offer first.
If anyone has a real complaint, it could be Norm Chow…in both cases Utah offered before UH.
Ferd sums up the scheduling problem well. If the MWC uses an 8-game schedule (that Air Force and some others want), then UH would have lots of room for BYU. If the MWC lets UH schedule BYU to end every season, that would probably be the ideal situation since conferences with title games can’t send their teams to Hawaii to end the season…BYU would be a much better draw to end the season instead of Sun Belt teams.
Belated Birthday Wishes to Devon Tsai!
While reminiscing about the fabulous Tsaikos, I especially want to send out a shout to Diana, Kekoa’s better half. Barbara mentioned missing socializing with you, and me too.
We miss everyone!
We are counting down till September which is rapidly approaching when we will be able to see you all again!
Hasta la vista! Y’all!

Good morning, everyone!
Good luck to Walker!

Come bowbaseball, get it today!

btw,
Hai Karate<<< Some of us still use it.
Morning folks!
Here’s an interesting tidbit. Thought I would share…
The University of Nevada compliance office is investigating alleged NCAA violations within the swimming and diving program.
The inquiry comes after the parent of a UNR swimmer sent an email to Wolf Pack administrators complaining about coach Mike Richmond.
The alleged incident says that Richmond has been “verbally and emotionally abusive” to the athletes.
Hmm, Jim Bolla type abuse?
Anyway, have a good one!
8th place in the WAC Commissioner’s Cup standings says a lot about who we are and how much we need to do.
Morning, everyone!
#10… 99club… you forgot the “hocking” throat sound made between ‘numbah’ and ‘t-e-e-e-e-h-n’. I’ve only been called this when in disagreement while bartering for goods, or when refusing to buy a girl a drink. Surely brings back some great memories, though!
Go, Joshua Walker!!!
Whatever happened to…
The Skyslides?
Cool “what ever happened to” post! By the way, I just bought a pair of OP swim trunks at Wally. I guess Wal Mart now got the OP brand. WHUUUTT???? No HOT DOG vendors? What is this world coming to?
And who could ever forget that great orangeade that came in a can that was the same size as tomato paste and went down down down in your tum tum tum?
Good morning friends! Have an awesome day.
BIK
As for the true blue, olds school corduroy OP’s, there are still a few middle-aged (mainly local Japanese) uncles who still got them. They rise as high as basketball shorts that was worn during the “pre-baggy” days and are usually worn with scott hawaii slippers. The ensemble was usually purchased at liberty house or JC penny.
I swear, my uncle still wears these shorts!
BIK
Might be a good idea for the Warriors to get a little pep-talk from members of the 73 UH team that beat UW at Husky Stadium. Players such as Levi Stanley, Hal Stringert, Scott Haneberg, Don Weir, and coaches such as Larry Price (who was DC at the time) and Rick Blangiardi.
http://www.collegefootballdatadvds.com/guides/1973utahathawaii.pdf
Staying in Bellevue is just a short ride over the 520 floating bridge to Husky Stadium (depending on traffic).
#19… Maybe if we had more money for more scholarships, we could participate in more athletics to pick up a few extra points. Boise State fields a team in all 19 rated sports. Look at the chart. Usually, schools that participate in more rated sports score higher overall. Also, not everyone can field teams like we do… i.e. Sailing. Plus, we don’t field teams in men’s cross country, men’s indoor AND outdoor track and field, and gymnastics. We’re giving up additional points already.
The other point is that we are usually weaker in certain other sports. I mean, finishing last or near last in so many sports won’t get us many points.
So, wait… what does the winner of Benson’s Cup get, aside from bragging rights?
Good morning, gang!
Kudos to Josh Walker! Glad to hear that UH can help him pay for some expenses.
Midnite & Barbra! Mahalo for the shout clear ‘cross the fruited plains.
Barb, when we get to Vegas in Sept., we got some serious shopping to do while the men folk worry about their X’s and O’s.
Mid, can’t wait to hear you sing at the Karaoke club that John is reserving for the Tsaiko gang. Love to hear you sing those oldies!
You know football is not my thing. Volleyball and bowling were my most competitive sports. Kekoa drags me along to help carry his Tsaiko signs, banners, flags, t-shirts and snacks. LOL, he’s so jazzed about the game, I wish they would play it already!
See you both in Sept!…now where is Kekoa? He said he was goin’ make me one cup kope. That was an hour ago!
Yup, agree with MW’s comment on the Commisioners Cup. They need to even out the playing field. It would be better if they just picked sports that all schools participated in. Boise State participates in 18 of the 19 sports that is calculated towards the WAC CC. Shouldn’t be surprised that Boise State has the higher score.
Barb ~ Like Rodney Dangerfield, I get No Respect! I’m looking forward to seeing you and your roomie in Sept. I bet the one thing you two miss the most is the early morning walks & swim at Kuhio beach.
Midnite my friend…wait until you see the 2011 version of the Warrior team! IMHO, they are very much improved at every position.
Go Warriors!
Good morning everyone! Weekends are always good…even better when every day of the week is a weekend for some of us! LOL
Adding to what MW and Shoko have said. Although it’s been a sore spot with Last Call, jumping to conclusions over the Commisioner’s Cup is not a constructive exercise. UH can not field men’s teams in some of the sports because of balancing the men/women’s sports equation. And some sports that Hawaii is great in (think sailing and surfing) are not included in the standings as has already been pointed out. More than an issue with just fielding teams in the right sports, it has to do with Hawaii’s location (again). While other schools can bus their athletes to gymastics and track meets (for example), UH can’t afford to fly non-revenue producing teams to the mainland every weekend to up their competition level. When they do (see softball, golf, soccer, etc. you can see the expense (cue the budget music).
Last Call may have a solution that allows UH to field more teams and not cost any more money. That would be a great thing! Share with us and send to JD.
Alrighty, great to see Diana here this morning!
Midnight and Barbara… Looking forward to seeing you in LV too!

Have fun chopsueyboy!
Been debating on season tix this year… Can’t go to all the home games… The price of planes is nutz….
Argh….
Liz
I already promised my first game tix to KK, but if you give him your irresistable smile he may invite you to sit with him. lol
Seems like there’s always someone having a commitment elsewhere. Maybe try putting out your need for tix for certain games well in advance and let the Tsaikos come through for you…
Verry nice blog and useful! I think i will come back one day! SportDay
Great Morning All!

Congratulations Josh Walker!
Just want to thank all of the apologist for their comments on the WAC Commissioners cup.
Maybe the baseball team will win today and tie Fresno State for regular season champs giving us a few needed points.

Good morning everyone!
Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa — wasn’t he on Hawaii 5-O this season as the Yakuza boss?
Hai Karate — didn’t use it. Used “Jade East” instead. Gals liked it… 🙂
D-1 ~ Bus scripts & transfers. Didn’t matter where you were going…you had to transfer at A’ala park.
Good morning Tsaikos!!
Congrats to Josh Walker!! Good luck, I know you will represent Hawaii well. Just remember the rainbow you saw over Manoa your first day in Hawaii.
Great job to UH for helping to pay for his expenses.
Some of the Volleyball Warriors can be seen in Wakiki near Walls playing beach volleyball. Josh, Nejc, Troy Crutchfield and Steven Hunt have been spotted.
WAC Commissioner’s Cup – WHO CARES!!! They don’t count the sports that UH competes in other conferences because the WAC doesn’t have enough teams to field a conference (and usually does well in) – men’s vb (MPSF), women’s water polo (MPSF), men’s swimming & diving (CUSA), sailing and cheerleading. I find it interesting that the WAC awards points in gymnastics when only *3* of the full-member schools compete. No other WAC school competes in men’s vb.
Great, ST, now you got the Exchange song going in my head! 👿 🙄
Glad Mos burgers are gone. They were NOT hamburgers. yeeech.
Double features went out with the drive-in. 🙁
Thanks, BG- I’ll miss the first game… cruising with family in the Caribbean to celebrate mom’s 90th. 😉

Oh, end of the world is today? Man, I just renewed my Costco membership!!
Remember that handshake where the thumbs sort of interlocked?
And then it morphed into a three-move handshake?
Yeah, that was dumb.
Speaking of meeting in Vegas in September (and Seattle), please email me lodging/ETA updates, additions and cancellations. Current logistics and activity planner info at:

Wait, was it “Coronet’s” or “Cornet’s”? Now that I think about it, I think it was “Cornet’s”. Must be those beer commercials I’d been seeing.
Speaking of which, is Primo still around in those short, fat brown bottles?
Funny guy! Hawaii with 3 TDs 21-1…and now…another 2 runs! WooHoo! 23-1! 6th inning…

wafan, I’ll bet she really enjoys seeing what her fave son is accomplishing in the wilds of Washington…
I wonder what the record is for duplicate posts? Is 17 a record or does it even come close?
Where is SteveM . . . he might know.
jm, I can remember some theater names but haven’t the faintest idea where they were located…Kokusai…Toyo…Golden Wall
There was a Scotty’s in Pearl City too. Wait…am I repeating myself (one of the realities of growing old).
Was the Toyo in the Makiki area? I remember a Japanese theatre somewhere around there.
Anyone remember that Fisherman’s Wharf had a triple decker crab and bacon sandwich (with real crab!). I also vividly remember the lobster thermidor! Even had their turtle steak before it was banned.
JM2375 #104 – I think you are thinking of the Sheridan Theatre.
I used to go to the Palace Theatre (Beretania and Keeaumoku) in 1939-41 or 42 for the Saturday double features with the weekly “chapter” (serials) like Captain Marvel,Sheena, Superman etc.
The PC Scotties was near where the Zippy’s is now.
How about Pearl City Tavern?
Goodness…there are some consequences of talking about fuud! bbl after I check out what’s in the fridge.
Actually, Zippy’s is sitting where Scotty’s used to be. My parents used to love to go to PCT! I can’t remember much about the food except I liked the shrimp tempura…liked watching the monkeys more than eating.
Whatever happened to my Richie Rich comic book collection? It was there when I left to join the Army…
Funny I do not remember the monkeys. Rather the bonsai is what I remember. Might be because of the hot house above (?) the PCT.
wafan – I think it was Toyo Theater.
Whatever happened to Castle Park by the stadium?
Oh, I miss Pearl City Tavern! Only went there twice that I can recall, but loved it!
Castle Park was a fun place with lots to do.
Time to get ready for dinner.
Headed to a place similar to Cici’s Pizza. But, this place has a grill and a super salad bar, too!
Be back in a while.
Miss the original Wong Kung restaurant in Waipahu too.
And, I never got a chance to dig out a handful of pennies on Checkers & Pogo.
One of these days. Maybe I’ll start it up for our kids’ birthdays.
Yep, out the door myself. Back laterz. Can’t wait to see what else you all come up with!
Afternoon Gangeez! 🙂
Gratz to Walker!
So are all o’ yous old people reliving them memories cuz the world’s gonna end? Better hurry, 6PM will be here before ya know it! 😆
Watched the 1 Armed Swordsman in the Liberty Theater.
Bluebird Drive-in in Pearl City.
Funny how old people like to reminisce. Happens at least twice in a blog year.
Homey, the world supposed to end so looking back. Hehehehe
Toyo theatre was next to the river between River Street and Aala Street.
My uncle used to take me to samurai movies there. Kinnosuke, Hibari…Ahhh, sugar colored popcorn….
Tom — Palace theatre. My parents used to take me samurai movies there. Also Toho on Kapiolani.
Great Day so far. Baseball trounced NMS and both Fresno State and NMS got sent to the losers bracket in softball.
The only bummer for me today was Danica Patrick’s poor showing in the Indy qualifying after being in the top 5 during practice all week but as Daniel Tosh once said “I have to say that Danica Patrick looks pretty good with her hair flowing in the wind in her last place car.”
Tange Sazen?
pp2 – For you, not me. LOL Anyway if it ends then there’s no looking back. 😆
Toho – now 24 hr Fitness on Kapiolani
Toyo – Chinese Cultural Plaza
New Kokusai – Church at Nuuanu and Beretania
Liberty – Parking lot across from said church
American (?) – skating rink in Aala Park
d1shima — yes, saw Tange Sazen at Toyo theatre. Was a little intense for a little kid (my uncle had kid-watching duty). After Toyo closed and I was older, parents took me to other theatres.
What was the name of the theatre at Beretania and Nuuanu…Kokusai? Zato-ichi memories there. Where’s Al?
You know living in Hawaii all my life, sometimes I don’t know what people mean when they say that the people here is like no where else. I guess it just comes natural or expected as to how we act or respond to situations. If you ever watched Parking Wars, then you would get an idea of how great the people in Hawaii are. The people getting the tickets, giving the tickets, and at the processing place, or where they pick up their towed car, has no place in Hawaii. Thanks ma and pop for living here.

Hawaii theatre is still here.
Saw “Tarantula” there as a little kid. Every time I go to Hawaii theatre now, I look up at the ceiling… that dome.
Princess theatre conjures memories of “The Attack of the Crab Monsters”. Kinda dating myself– those were first-run releases back then. 🙂

When Trap was hired and the basebows weren’t winning those years, people were muttering get rid of him. I knew Trap was an excellent recruiter and a good coach. Just took a couple years to see the fruits of his labor. Gib Arnold also is a excellent recruiter. Just like Bruce O’Neil was. He got top rated players that normally wouldn’t come here. Bob Coolen and Wahine softballers just had a off year. The seniors of last year were sorely missed. Our football team sounds awesome!!! Greg Mac got a monster ready to break loose. Rolo gonna let the run and shoot rocket to the moon. And with Dick Tomey manning special teams and Aranda the brain guiding the defense, I feel sorry for the oppenents. Each of the 11 offense looks excellent and ditto 11 on defense. John Hardy Tuilau-I can’t find words to describe him. Cory Paredes, Outta sight!!! Since I’ve been following UH football since 1966, I never saw a team so stacked with talent as this one.

When the UH weight room was an attached section to Klum Gym, about the size of a 2 car garage.
Also, when the Kuhio Grill was the unofficial training table of UH football players.
We no longer have any drive in theatres. The old movie theaters that looked like museums or conert halls are all gone. Now they’re all mini theaters that look like oversized living rooms. The ol days were better.
Somewhat related to UH Football, but when UH had a men’s track and field program – Terry Albritton set an NCAA record in the shot put – later made his mark training many UH athletes as strength coach.

no balloon brigade answer:
a few years ago, karl benson notified UH that the balloon brigade was deemed as noisemakers so he warned them that WAC refs were given the option to call a technical foul on the fans if they heard the squeaking.
UH decided not to test this theory out and decided to stop the balloons.
because i was so entwined with the brigade, i was upset about the situation, i wrote an email to mr. benson about it. this was about the time the wac was trying their “PLAY UP” campaign and trying to make games exciting. i asked why he decided this. i expected an email back. i did but it asked for my # because he wanted to call me. it was the weekend of some sort of wac presentation at the ssc so he wanted to call me to talk to me personally about the situation when he landed.
when he called, he said the reason he had to make the decision was because they were cracking down on other schools for their unsportsmanlike actions at basketball games. the wac was also trying to make games more fan friendly and enforce sportsmanship. the other two top wac teams in basketball, USU and NMSU’s student sections were vulgar and vicious in their cheering and chants that other teams complained about. when mr benson told them to enforce the sportsmanship policy and cut out the yelling, one of them complained about the balloons. he said he had to tell them he’d also enforce it against us to be fair. he said that the ncaa rule is to prohibit “noisemakers” at indoor sporting events and that he knew about the balloons for awhile and sorta looked the other way about it because it was such a fan favorite and didn’t bother anyone. but because another school complained about it and he was trying to be fair across the board, he had to warn UH.
I was very upset about losing the balloons, but respected him for calling me and explaining the situation in a pretty lengthy phone call. it was tough to swallow my pride but i did thank him for calling. discussing this with UH bball folks, we agreed to discontinue the balloon brigade.
now that we are leaving the wac and headed to the big west, i am not sure what the plans will be. it’ll be up to the new UH administration and coaches to see what is acceptable and what they would like to do.
now that the student section is free with the student fee, i’d like to see the section filled with crazy students. its been a few years since that section has had a good crowd and i think the balloons would help bring that area back to life and give the players a home crowd advantage that they desperately deserve. but again, i will stand by and see what happens in the upcoming years.
thank you for your time.

Toppe ada Shoppe?
Sure hope so, c_c!
CC – too bad you had to travel for work, the balloon brigade could have made an appearance at the bball tournament games.
Love the balloons

I don’t like the balloon noisemakers. Just my opinion. Give the students megaphones! Cheering is what you want to hear.
