We're still alive

By Stephen Tsai on July 24, 2011

Yep, we made it. The Warrior Beat is 5 years old today. They say most businesses don’t survive five years. We’re fortuante that we’re not a business. We’re a bunch of ordinary folks who got together — and for many, stayed together — because of our interest in Warrior football. And food. Which is why it was a good thing that the proposed blog name, Tsai’s Matters, was nixed. Through the years, we made some good friends. And we lost […]

T.J. is OK

By Stephen Tsai on July 23, 2011

The elephant in the strategy  room is now part of the discussions. T.J. Taimatuia was silenced during his freshman year because of a broken foot. But now Taimatuia is fully recovered and running at top speed during unsupervised workouts. “It feels good,” said Taimatuia, who plays the elephant, the hybrid pass-rusher/outside linebacker position. Taimatuia said he suffered the injury to his left foot while performing a football-related activity. The surgery was unique, according to Taimatuia, because one bone “covered another […]

Pilares goes swoosh

By Stephen Tsai on July 22, 2011

Former UH receiver Kealoha Pilares confirmed he has landed a deal with Nike. He declined to reveal terms. But the Damien Memorial High School graduate appears to be a merry Monarch. * * * * * Yes, the new uniforms do look good. And quarterback Bryant Moniz really approves the custom-designed jersey that provides “mobility” for a passer’s arm. But what drew the most raves were the new shoes. In 2008, the Warriors’ first year of the five-year contract with […]

New jersey

By Stephen Tsai on July 21, 2011

No, no, not that Jersey. During a news conference this afternoon, the Warriors will unveil their new uniforms. Bryant Moniz and Corey Paredes are expected to be the models for the jerseys, which will feature tribal armbands on the sleeves. * * * * “It’s all in fun,” cornerback Tank Hopkins said of the Warriors’ version of planking. To spice up unsupervised workouts, whenever the defense forces a turnover, the defenders go to the turf and start planking. Because Hopkins […]

UH passes on Tate

By Stephen Tsai on July 20, 2011

The Warriors have abandoned efforts to recruit Tate Forcier, apparently because the former Michigan quarterback does not project to meet the requirement to enroll at UH this fall, according to people familiar with the situation. UH’s fall semester begins Aug. 22. Forcier had told ESPN and the WB that he would be visiting UH this weekend. He even sent UH his transcripts, the Warriors’ requirement for an official recruiting trip. The Warriors, who were extremely interested in bringing in Forcier […]

Kekaula: 'These are exciting times'

By Stephen Tsai on July 19, 2011

KITV sports anchor Robert Kekaula’s once-upon-a-time dreams have been realized. “These are exciting times,” said Kekaula, 46, who accepted an offer from Oceanic to serve as play-by-play announcer for Warrior football telecasts. “UH football is the biggest game in town. This is something I’ve always had a desire to do.” Kekaula was a television and radio color analyst for 18 UH football seasons before receiving a call from Dan Schmidt, Oceanic’s general manager and executive producer for UH sportscasts. Oceanic […]

By Stephen Tsai on July 18, 2011

Former Michigan quarterback Tate Forcier confirmed reports that he will visit Hawaii this weekend. “Yep,” Forcier told the WB. “I’m going to do it this weekend.” * * * * * The Warriors have launched the Heisman Trophy campaign for quarterback Bryant Moniz with a Facebook page. Here’s the link: Bryant Moniz for Heisman. And the site features a cool video: Moniz video. * * * * * Heralded recruit, cornerback Mike Edwards, has arrived in Manoa — two weeks […]

QB Spain conquering injury

By Stephen Tsai on July 17, 2011

During afternoon summer workouts, it is “definitely in the 90s,” according to backup quarterback Kevin Spain. Those are indeed promising conditions. The number reflects the health percentage of Spain’s surgically repaired right shoulder. He did not play as a freshman in 2010 after suffering the injury during the summer. He will receive a medical hardship, and have four years to play four seasons. “I’m getting to the point where I can lift more weights,” Spain said. “I was so weak […]
