T.J. is OK

tj1

The elephant in the strategy  room is now part of the discussions.

T.J. Taimatuia was silenced during his freshman year because of a broken foot. But now Taimatuia is fully recovered and running at top speed during unsupervised workouts.

“It feels good,” said Taimatuia, who plays the elephant, the hybrid pass-rusher/outside linebacker position.

Taimatuia said he suffered the injury to his left foot while performing a football-related activity. The surgery was unique, according to Taimatuia, because one bone “covered another bone.”

Art Laurel and Brendan Daley also are in the competition at elephant.

    Aloha Kakahiaka:

Just a few minutes away from getting ready to leave to get DrDoc set up at the Ulupo Heiau Ho`ike at the Windward YMCA on Kailua Road opposite 7-11 before I head on into town to the Kaka`ako Makai Marketplace across the street from the Children’s Discovery Center.

Both places will accept donations for the BOOKS, BAGS & MORE Drive.

Please mark your calendars for two upcoming events – early Friday evening, August 12, and Saturday morning, August 20. Details forthcoming.

I’m also working with the Athletic Department’s marketing folks about setting up displays at the Kaka`ako Makai Marketplace to promote fall NCAA sports. Much more information on that to come as well.

Oh, my, three Aggies this year?

    OK, no fertilizer comments, either.

  30. CoolEthan July 23, 2011 8:01 am

  33. gigi-hawaii July 23, 2011 8:06 am

ST, if Gib forces delinquent players to run at 5 am, what does Mack do to his players?

I mean, what is discipline for???

How do you make men out of boys, anyway?

  34. CoolEthan July 23, 2011 8:08 am

    Fact: The buffalo nickel, which was produced from 1913 – 1938 has value(s) ranging from 0.35 – $ 1200.00 ( 1916)

  38. BG July 23, 2011 8:11 am

I’m thinking there’s a good probability that the complaint about coach Gib came from a player who’s already transferred out. Discipline…not enough playing time…sour grapes wot?

  39. gigi-hawaii July 23, 2011 8:13 am

What a cry baby that student is.

If he doesn’t like it, then ship out!!!

  40. Stephen Tsai July 23, 2011 8:13 am

    Re: Pay wall.

From what I understand, this is how it will work.

    • Many of the online features still will be available for free.

    • The articles and features that appear in the print edition can only be accessed online by subscribers. If you already subscribe, you’re fine. You’ll be able to get the entire online edition for free on your computer or phone.

    • It’s the regular subscription rate for Oahu residents. Neighbor Island readers will be offered a lower rate. Non-Hawaii residents will pay about $10 a year.

    • There will be a lower price if you wish to subscribe only to online and not the print edition. There also will be a 24-hour pass for 99 cents.

    • Each subscriber household will receive a code. The code may be used on multiple computers, but not simultaneously. If you’re reading the online version on your computer and your brother-in-law then signs on with your code, he will bump you off. What you do to your brother-in-law is your own business.

    • Subscribers will have access to the archives.

  41. gigi-hawaii July 23, 2011 8:13 am

…and for this to come out just when the team is ready to fly to China, man, what awful timing!

  42. BG July 23, 2011 8:16 am

Right on CE! Not everyone is cut out to be a Marine…and that’s the way it should be. Apparently, not everyone is cut out to be a player for Gibs too. Das OK, hope he finds a place that suits his ego.

  43. gigi-hawaii July 23, 2011 8:17 am

ST, how far do the archives go?

    e.g., I cannot access the Star-Bulletin archives.

Is the Hon Adv’s archives still available?

  44. gigi-hawaii July 23, 2011 8:18 am

BR, my dad was a tailor for the Marines.

    Gigi:

Well, since UH football practices begin at 7 a.m. and players usually are there at 6 for treatment, 5 a.m. running wouldn’t be much of a problem.

During the summer, if a newcomer on scholarship misses a class, Tommy Heffernan makes every newcomer run extra or do rolls during supervised conditioning drills. Makes sense, since scholarship players receive full benefits when they take summer classes.

  48. Stephen Tsai July 23, 2011 8:24 am

    Gigi:

The Advertiser used to make stories available online for three months from the date of publication.

The archives were on microfiche in The Advertiser’s library.

In the months leading to the end of The Advertiser, a company was hired to digitalize the archives. I do not know where the digitalized archives are.

  49. Stephen Tsai July 23, 2011 8:28 am

    Happy Birthday! Princess Leila.

ST, Koakane, LizKauai thanks for the Birthday wishes.

RE: Running for punishment, my son’s club basketball team ran suicides for being late or missing practices, and these are 12U & 14U boys. A couple of teammates racked up over 80 and over 100 due to being on trips during their tournament prep practices. Of course their teammates helped them by running suicides for them (ala Coach Carter.)

And then there is his intermediate team where everyone would have to run suicides if someone was late to practice.

  63. Derek July 23, 2011 9:01 am

For unexcuses absences from class is pretty bad. There should be consequences. For a disgruntled player because of lack of playing time is sour grapes to me. If the disgruntled player is still in the program I would be shocked, but if he is he should get out of dodge right now. There is no room for a player who is not a team player. In the first place, playing time is earned with hard work and performance in team practices and scrimmages. With a roster of 13 to 15 players on a team you can expect maybe 10 players to play in a game. The 11 to 15th players are not going to get very much playing time if at all. Most times, the coach has a rotation of 7 to 8, maybe 9 players and depending on the foul situation a couple more might play some minutes. It is all about production. If a player is playing well he will get his minutes and maybe then some. If he doesn’t he sits for awhile. I’ve seen it done many times. Make a couple turnovers, you come out. Hitting some bricks, you come out. Then later, you go back in. That’s what it is. Arnold knows what he’s doing. Give me a break. There is no crying in basketball!!!!!

  64. Da Punchbowl Kid July 23, 2011 9:02 am

    Good Morning Gangeez!!! 🙂

Howzit A-House. How’s da absurdly pretty wife today? What yous guys got going?

  65. Stephen Tsai July 23, 2011 9:16 am

Not that I have a say on this, but I think:

    1. UH probably needs to look into every complaint, especially after the Bolla situation, which resulted in a very costly lawsuit.

    2. I think there is some speculation involving the content of the complaint. But because the complaint — and the investigation — have not been confirmed absolutely, it is difficult to determine the context.

It probably would have been better to wait for more developments before this story ran. That’s one of the reasons why, unless in certain situations, papers don’t identify people arrested. They wait until a suspect has been charged. More substantial evidence is needed for charges than arrests.

  66. Stephen Tsai July 23, 2011 9:22 am

The other cautionary thing is that because the pool of basketball players is so small — and the number who left the program even smaller — it casts suspicion on all of the players.

It would be different in, say, football, where the roster is larger, so anonymity could be more afforded.

  67. al July 23, 2011 9:26 am

congratulations tj on your comeback trail. it is good to have a tj on the team. the last one exemplified the warrior mantra…follow him.

  68. al July 23, 2011 9:28 am

  69. al July 23, 2011 9:32 am

mbb…the timing of the article was bad, bad for ferd i think since the day before he blasted arnold (again) in his column about not renewing his contract so readily in light of the recent non-quals he recruited this past season.

it seemed to have a personal vendetta hidden in the subliminal message bars of both articles(?).

  70. al July 23, 2011 9:33 am

  72. al July 23, 2011 9:34 am

    okay back to digging.

digging for info regarding the two potential holy grails.

  73. Da Punchbowl Kid July 23, 2011 9:36 am

Just read the Ferd’s article about UH men’s Hoops. Its about that pic of the coach. All they need is to photoshop a pair of horns on it, maybe a goatee. 😆

Seriously, the Ferd is an excellent writer, but I wonder why this story needs to be run. A quick read makes it sound like a problem which the UHAD could handle internally.

A nice perspective is given in the trailer below, featuring one the best prep basketball programs in the country. Wait til the middle of the trailer and watch their coach.

    Nuff said.

BTW – If you get a chance, check out the entire documentary: “The Street Ends Here”- Truly inspirational stuff.

Ferd’s a great reporter, and it’s a very good story.

It’s just that when some of the details come out, but not all, it leads to the type of speculation of the accuser and accused that may or may not be warranted.

  82. al July 23, 2011 10:00 am

your son is off to college to get a degree and play ball.

he is on a full ride where everything is free.

free as long as he can tow the line in the classroom and on the court.

so the coach is entrusted with your son’s welfare for 4-5 years.

    you live 5,000 miles away.

he is your son’s new father now.

father now has 13 kids plus 4 walk ons and five of his own.

if the kids don’t listen to father then problems exist.

if the kids don’t tow the line, no more scholarship.

so father has some rules like go to every class.

that so important because it all starts there.

those of you who have been to college know how easy it is to skip class.

    soon skipping is a habit.

soon you get an incomplete or a failing grade.

probation for a scholarship student leads to the loss of your package.

so new father imposes strict rules about classes.

    for who’s benefit you think?

punishment for violators…run laps at 5 am and possible bench time.

not a bad penal system for a scholarship worth nearly 200k over four years.

go to class: a small price to pay for so much at stake.

…father knows best and nuff said.

  83. clowns nose July 23, 2011 10:01 am

    I read Ferd’s article today.

I hope that’s the iceburg and not the tip.

Ferd identifies a complaint has been filed against Coach Gib. And as a result an on going investigation is currently taking place.

    I hope it’s not a civil complaint.

  84. Da Punchbowl Kid July 23, 2011 10:02 am

    About Amy W. –

Sad to note her passing. Prayers for her and her family.

27 is way to young. She, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain and Jim Morrison will be “forever 27”.

  85. gigi-hawaii July 23, 2011 10:04 am

My question is why UH has to hire outside counsel.

What’s wrong with their in-house counsel?

BTW, I used to work at a law firm that Cal Chipchase used to work for. He’s a CPA as well as Esq. Smart lawyer whom UH hired to investigate this complaint.

  86. al July 23, 2011 10:11 am

gg…i think your comment answered your question in itself.

  87. al July 23, 2011 10:14 am

  88. RedZone July 23, 2011 10:17 am

If a coach made me run a 5 AM in the morning for missing classes and I told my dad he would say, “Good for you.” Then he would tell the coach, Good job.”

    Happy birthday Princess.

  89. al July 23, 2011 10:18 am

    redzone…my sentiments exactly.

  90. al July 23, 2011 10:18 am

actually he would make me run two more at 4 am before the coach comes.

    kids now days…too soft.

  91. Pauoa Boy July 23, 2011 10:21 am

I support Coach Gib 100%, but too bad he’s recruited some bad eggs and cry babies. How you going to complain about playing time if you ain’t putting out on the court or in the classroom. It’s simple…go to class and take care of business, then go to practice and put in work! Frikk it’s a priviledge for these guys to have scholarships and go to school for free, holding up their end of the deal is the easy part. I commend guys like Joston Thomas who had a little snafu during the season but instead of sulking, he just man’d up and took care of business. Now he got his mind right and has been putting in work, garrans you’ll see a different player. Trevor Wiseman, this dude earned his playing time and thus got some starts toward the end of the season, he too had some difficulties with schoolwork, but what did he do…took the time to get things straight and man’d up, now he’s all good. I just shake my head when I read caca cause somebody got some sand in their va-je-je… frikkin man up and stop being such a wuss!

CoolEthan – I doubt any of these boys would last one session of some incentive training with a Marine… I know I would make them cry real quick!

  92. al July 23, 2011 10:23 am

    pboy…spoken like a true marine!

    ooohrahhh!

  93. Bryson July 23, 2011 10:31 am

Just thinking back to when we had the chance to Chat with mack,He mentioned about the stadium being empty during warm ups,I think one solution that could possbily help with local recruiting would be to create a “Green Mile”…A Green Carpet with Barriers so the fans can cheer on the Players as they go into ALoha Stadium…Think of what it would be like if you grew up going to UH games and got too see your favorite players up close and personal…Imagine the pride one would feel growing up a fan and being able to shake your favorite players hand before they went to battle for the State you grew up in…That’s one thing I’ll gripe about is the general disconnect UH has with it’s fans the efforts are being made now a days but think of the impact on local recruiting if 20yrs ago UH had made a better effort to market its football team to the residents of Hawaii…

  94. Bryson July 23, 2011 10:33 am

Are you kidding me Gib being investigated for discipline and playing time…Some kids are just too spoiled and feel that they deserve more than the next guy without working as hard as the next guy..I applaud Gib because he understands much like Coach Mack that the Student comes before the Athlete…

  95. Slugger July 23, 2011 10:49 am

    Good morning, gang!

Happy birthday, Princess Leila! I see her running or walking around the Mo’ili’ili area sometimes.

    Go, T.J.!

  96. 99club July 23, 2011 11:03 am

    PB-

Love that post above. I used to tell military students in front of their instructors to let me know if the instructor works them too hard or PT’s them too hard…because I needed appraisal bullets for the instructor’s performance (fit) reports. Funny, I never heard any complaints.

  97. Derek July 23, 2011 11:06 am

A basketball coach, especially the Head Coach, has a lot of clout. Guys like Coach K, Roy Williams, Boeheim, etc. they are like god. They are proven. The UH basketball team last year did well and won a tournament game and Arnold now has some credibility and has shown he can recruit some good players. When you have some clout and have proven himself to win games and have a winning season or seasons the coach gets more respect.

In the case of Bobby Hurley at St. Anthony’s he’s proven himself to be a great basketball coach. He can say “It’s my way or the highway.” He can be more disciplined with his players. But, you can’t hit a player and it’s not a good thing to throw a chair either. To mold a team into a good team you have to have discipline. It has to be “WE” instead of “Me”. It’s a jungle out there. If a player is not good enough to play, it’s not like he has to stay if we wants to play. If he wants to play here, do it the old fashioned way “earn it.”

    I don’t like complainers.

Talk about the jungle, what do we call the 3 eleplants, Laurel, Daley, and Taimatuia. Do we call it Elephant #1, #2, and #3 or do we call it Dumbo, Jumbo, and Tron????? Hey, I’m just asking.

I’m with Al, let’s look for the next holy grail. I hope Rolo is getting a good one, or two. Is he still on the mainland recruiting? At Oregon, someone is not going to play much with Mariota and Rodrigues and there are probably some others in the mix. It’s too bad, Mariota would have been a very, very good QB for UH. He’s got a lot of athletic ability, arm strength and speed. He would have proven UH the kind of dimension that is hard to find, a do everything, dual run and passing QB. Coach Rolo, good luck in your search for the holy grail! When he does, we can all go down to mamby pamby lane at McDonalds’s and have some Rolo McFlurry for some self-confidence!!!!!!! Hehe.

GO GIB, GO!! Weed out the ones who won’t buy into the program. Unfortunately, discipline is a dirty word in today’s society and among young people today.

As my late grandmother would say: “Deeze kids nowadays, dey make me SICK and need a slap on da head!!”

If this thing with Coach Gib is what everyone thinks it is then all I’ve got to say is those guys are lucky I’m not the coach. I would have made them run up Wilhelmina Rise at 5 AM then back down.

  103. tom mui July 23, 2011 11:46 am

If I were much much younger and played basketball, I would be sitting on the bench gathering splinters.

If I am great, I would get much playing time. If I am mediocre, I will get some playing time.

If I think I am good at basketball but not cutting it in class, I obviously don’t have the discipline to be a good team member.

But if I am good in class and fairly good as a basketball player but can’t adapt to a system imposed by a coach, I would have to run as president.

I suppose you have to investigate each claim carefully but like ST says, get the facts first, then write about it.

  104. Innocent Observer July 23, 2011 11:55 am

Believe the real issue with the Gib fiasco is lack of communication between player and coach. There will be disagreements, etc., but there should be the ability for both to discuss the issues and how to positively correct the situation, rather than just punishing the offender. Gib is the coach and the players must follow team rules but infractions should be open to discussion to help the offender to rehabilitate, which is part of the coach’s responsibility. This shows the coach has respect for the player as a person, and in turn the player will have respect for the coach. No relationship is only a one-way street.

All together we will have 200+ Warrior fans sitting in these 10 rows, from row 12 to 21. You can’t get these kine seats at any other stadium. running a couple of miles at 5 am maybe cruel for a disabled-diabetic over 65 years of age but the means test for for a college basketball player awol from classes is a mere inconvenience.

football players across the nation are awakening at that hour to train and practice.

commonplace stuff in the world of college training dynamics. the purpose for the army wake-up call is to get your training done before the school day begins. that makes sense to most folks.

it appears as if coach gib was delivering a message more than hanging his players by the thumb-nail. that message should be clear. you are here to ATTEND college and play basketball and, in that specific order.

  115. Stephen Tsai July 23, 2011 2:18 pm

Nobody is late for practice during training camp because they’re all living together.

  116. kama krab July 23, 2011 2:19 pm

    Howzit Everybody,

As a coach myself, I understand that communication is key when working with young people. That is why you set your parameters before the season even starts or in the instance of college sports, you set your parameters when the young person is recruited. It the recruit still insist to not follow the rules then disciplinary actions need to be taken. If the young person thinks that it is to harsh, then all you can say is to bad. The only thing I do not condone is putting your hands on a kid with the intent to harm them. That would be something to investigate.

Current odds to win the WAC:

    Fresno State 2-1

    Hawaii 5-2

    Nevada 5-2

    Louisiana Tech 5-1

    San Jose State 10-1

    Utah State 10-1

    Idaho 25-1

    New Mexico State 30-1

I guess someone figures Fresno’s going to beat both Hawaii and NV on the road. Those guys in Vegas aren’t as sharp as I thought.

  126. Old School Dave July 23, 2011 4:02 pm

“I’m not yelling at you. I’m motivating you.”

Bo Schembechler once had a team that was struggling at 4-3 (unacceptable for a Michigan team at that time in history). He found out that his players were complaining about practices being too hard, there being too much hitting, and the coaches too critical. The complaints were originating from his team captain. After a 5-minute tongue lashing by Schembechler, the team captain left his office in tears. Michigan went on to win its remaining games and a bowl game.

  127. warriorsun July 23, 2011 4:03 pm

JJ held practice in the earling mornings. the first coach at uh to do so. the athletes werent in dorms to hold hands when the alarm clock went off. most liked to get practice out of the way early. it cleared the slate for the remainder of the day and more importantly, allowed the time to focus on academics. the early rise also created speed-bumps for college nightlife.

it’s not fun to wake-up with a hang-over before sunrise to perform wind sprints.

  128. gigi-hawaii July 23, 2011 4:06 pm

finally got a chance to read Midweek today.

I saw UH strength coach Tommy Heffernan’s pic there.

He was asked, What are you most grateful for?

He answered, My wife and 2 children. They are my inspiration.

  129. gigi-hawaii July 23, 2011 4:08 pm

  131. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 23, 2011 4:13 pm

I know coaches/athletics are not exactly the same as teachers/school, but when I was in high school I used to think there were a few teachers I had that were too strict and just plain jerks. They scolded students, didn’t give them “chance” or leeway on homework or tests regardless of the “excuse.”

A few years into college and till this day, I am deeply thankful that I had teachers like that.

No idea of the facts of the case re: Gibb but discipline and being strict in general is a good thing.

Are they derived from one’s computer?

If the SA tech team tracks each poster’s IP address, does that mean I will be banned if I use a 2nd computer, eg., a laptop, while traveling?

What is the source of an IP address and is that the only way a poster can be tracked by the SA tech team?

  145. gigi-hawaii July 23, 2011 5:21 pm

oh, I get it. the IP is in the email address info I send to the SA blog.

so it does not matter which computer I use.

what matters is my email address and yahoo.mail, which is what I use.

    IWWTHM

    Now I am totally confused.

If you know, please tell me if my desk top computer and my laptop have 2 different IP addresses.

That’s all I really need to know.

  149. kawika49 July 23, 2011 5:49 pm

#149 Depends on where you are connecting. Your IP is determined by the adress that you are sending and receiving your signal from. If it were your home that has an unique ID. Starbucks different ID. IP has nothing to do with your email. IP has to do with the endpoint from your service provider.

  150. gigi-hawaii July 23, 2011 5:51 pm

    kawika, well whatever. sigh.

when ST said the tech team is going to track each poster, I wondered what he meant.

  151. kawika49 July 23, 2011 5:54 pm

#149 Think of it as your home address. Wherever you are at, at the time; you are unique at that point; and there is no one else at that specific point. There may be other computers on at the same time. They would be the number plus one..two three etc, depending on how many computers are sending through that one connection. So you see GIGI you are unique; wherever you are.

  152. kawika49 July 23, 2011 5:56 pm

He meant, that they were looking for the locus, of the messages. Where they originated from. However, if the person then looged on from elsewhere, the IP changed and they could’nt block the new message.

  153. gigi-hawaii July 23, 2011 5:57 pm

    kawika,

well, when I was on the BI, i used the hotel’s cable (Oceanic) and paid for it.

    #165,

Thinking back, I think the field at Aloha was always that kind of green. It was never a “fresh” green color.

But yeah, the sun must play a large role. Unless they tarp it during the off season? I think that would be a good idea to keep it away from the rain/sun/rain/sun/rain/sun beating it would get.

  167. homey ℞ July 23, 2011 6:54 pm

Field turf takes a long time to fade. What kind of turf is being installed at Aloha stadium?

  168. madeinhawaii July 23, 2011 7:09 pm

Stephen Tsai knows University of Hawai’i sports, down to the last decimal of a 40-yard dash. He’s lived UH sports since 1987. Few reporters get the inside information like he does. What Tsai writes is a daily must read.

    Meet the couch potato

    Thanks for stopping by.

This might not look like much now, but once this place is fixed up, we hope it serves as a meeting place to discuss all things that are University of Hawai’i sports.

There will be updates, behind-the-scenes stories of UH figures and the people who cover them and guest contributors. If I can figure out the equipment — and that’s an “if,” considering my VCR still blinks “12:00 … 12:00 …: — we’ll post sound bites and videos.

This will be your blog, too, so please send suggestions, questions and gripes. I’ll try to find the answers. I might be a couch potato, but I’ve got a press pass, a fat Rolodex and a thick skin (mostly around the mid-section).

    See you in a bit.

HAPPY 5th BIRTHDAY TO THE WARRIOR BEAT BLOG

HAPPY FIFTH BLOG ANNIVERSARY TO STEPHEN TSAI !!!

    WHAT’S The Answer to 177?

DOES The Sports Editor “O.K.” The STORY, The Skewing /Skewering AND The HEADLINE ?

Read with interest Readon’s shpill this morning and I’m still confused what he was getting at.

I know that I’m English and reading comprehension challenged, but I do need him to illucidate as I cannot comprehend his continuity. What was he trying to say by mixing in several different major points in the same paragraph. My simplicity says if you goin talk about beef stew, you talk about the meat, then the vegetables, and then the sauce; not mix them all up. So alone am I!

Guess he was defending Coach Gib while blasting UH for their handling of the complaint against him and putting in his own 2 cents.

When the topic was on a cracking a few puzzled on the question of anonymity on the net. Today, when lots of people took for spamming information sites, forums, twitter and facebook was required to become familiar using this sphere. This includes that thousands of individuals use a open public proxy for spamming and also kill them quickly. Finding a community proxy active today is incredibly difficult. This undermines the the effort of many people who find themselves trying to sound right to use public proxy. It also offers an option for your emergence of participant hunters proxy.
