Tough break

By Stephen Tsai on November 13, 2011

Bryant Moniz will undergo surgery tomorrow for a broken right fibula. He suffered the ankle injury on a scramble. Although the play was ruled a sack, it appeared to be a non-contact injury, with Moniz crumpling to the turf. The usual recovery period is between four and six weeks. In the best-case scenario, there is a slim chance Moniz would be able to return for the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl, if the Warriors were to qualify .

Call the coach

By Stephen Tsai on November 11, 2011

When defensive coordinator Dave Aranda is not coaching or drawing up plays or studying videos, he usually has an iPhone pressed against one ear and a noise-reducing finger in the other ear. Aranda has developed a network of contacts who share views, reviews and tips on upcoming opponents. The contacts also provide critiques of the Warriors. It is an exchange that does not appear to have an offseason or much downtown. Of all the UH coaches, Aranda spends the least […]

RENO — The Warriors awakened to 28-degree weather this morning. OK, OK, that was the temperature  outside the hotel. It was nice in the meeting rooms, and it should reach the 50s today. The Warriors had a 2-hour practice scheduled this afternoon at a nearby high school field. * * * * * Royce Pollard and Trevor Davis: * * * * * Trevor Davis: * * * * * Kenton Chun and Alex Dunnachie: * * * * * […]

Clapp had collapsed lung

By Stephen Tsai on November 8, 2011

Slotback Justin Clapp reportedly underwent a procedure last night to repair a collapsed lung, which was the result of a fractured rib suffered in Saturday’s game against Utah State. On his Facebook page, UH associate athletic director Carl Clapp wrote: “He is going to spend a short time in the hospital and it may be a few weeks before he will be able to play. No one wants to be with his teammates and coaches and contribute more than Justin. […]

Laurel, Clapp out for season

By Stephen Tsai on November 7, 2011

Head coach Greg McMackin confirmed this morning that left tackle Clayton Laurel and right slotback Justin Clapp will be lost for the remainder of the season because of injuries. But then at his news conference today, McMackin said Clapp would miss four weeks, which equates to the end of the regular season but leaves open the possibility of a return if the Warriors qualify for the Hawaii Bowl. Against Utah State, Laurel suffered a broken left arm, and Clapp suffered […]

Tough road ahead; USU QB released from hospital

By Stephen Tsai on November 6, 2011

The Warriors will learn in the next couple of days how many players will be available for what is now regarded as the stretch run. Preliminary indications are that left tackle Clayton Laurel might have suffered a season-ending broken arm. If so, it would be the final unfortunate stage in a career filled with injuries. Laurel has endured shoulder and ankle injuries the entire season. Jordan Loeffler finished the game as the left tackle. Right wideout Royce Pollard will undergo […]

Game day: Utah State

By Stephen Tsai on November 5, 2011

It will be the Halawa Caucus when Utah State and UH meet tonight at Aloha Stadium. At stake is consideration for the WAC’s Offensive Player of the Year. The Aggies’ candidate is Robert Turbin, a hard-running running back. The Warriors offer quarterback Bryant Moniz. This week, the Warriors have focused on tackling, a tribute to the “angry” style of the Utah State running backs. In turn, Utah State linebacker Bobby Wagner said the Aggies want to contain Moniz’s scrambles. According […]
