By the numbers

There were 27 seniors on the Warriors’ 2011 roster, of which 21 were on football scholarship. But that does not mean the Warriors will have 21 initial scholarships to offer. Some already are reserved for grayshirts. A couple might be reserved for players on the roster. For instance, quarterback Stump Godfrey did not receive a release after transferring from New Mexico. He is not eligible to receive a scholarship until the end of UH’s second summer session in August. There […]

Change of seasons

By Stephen Tsai on December 10, 2011

The Rainbow Wahine’s gritty effort in a Regional semifinal loss marks the end of  UH’s fall-sports season. For football fans, the Wahine served as a diversion for the type of football season that ends with a head coach’s departure. If the Warriors had beaten BYU a week ago, they would have been practicing today in preparation for the Hawaii Bowl. Instead, the coming week will focus on final examinations and, perhaps, the hiring of a new head coach. UH is officially […]

Place in history

By Stephen Tsai on December 9, 2011

It has been said history remembers Hawaii governors for what they build and UH athletic directors for whom they hire. John Burns is known for Aloha Stadium, George Ariyoshi for the UH athletic complex, John Waihee for the Stan Sheriff Center, Ben Cayetano for the convention center, Linda Lingle for the Ching complex turf. Ray Nagel hired Dick Tomey and Larry Little. Sheriff hired Bob Wagner, Frank Arnold, Riley Wallace, Vince Goo and Mike Wilton. Hugh Yoshida hired Fred vonAppen, […]

The Manoa sprint

By Stephen Tsai on December 8, 2011

Maybe it was because change appeared to be inevitable, but UH is poised to challenge the speed record for hiring a new head coach for football. A night after the season ended, head coach Greg McMackin reached a retirement agreement with the school. Soon after the news conference announcing the departure on Monday, the job opening was posted on the UH Web site, with a waiver for a speedy process approved. A search advisory committee was announced yesterday. The committee […]
