By the numbers

There were 27 seniors on the Warriors’ 2011 roster, of which 21 were on football scholarship.

But that does not mean the Warriors will have 21 initial scholarships to offer. Some already are reserved for grayshirts. A couple might be reserved for players on the roster. For instance, quarterback Stump Godfrey did not receive a release after transferring from New Mexico. He is not eligible to receive a scholarship until the end of UH’s second summer session in August. There might be flexibility depending on the academic and medical situations of some players.

But as of this morning,  it was estimated the Warriors will have between 11 and 14 initial scholarships to offer.

Dec. 21 is the first day mid-year transfers may sign letter of intent. (It was incorrectly reported this Wednesday was the mid-year signing day.) Feb. 1 is the first day of the signing period for high school seniors and other JC transfers.

    Good morning everyone.

Time is of the essence in naming a HC. Keeping an eye on that Dec 21 signing date for JUCO transfers. UH may have to recruit more from the JUCO ranks for 2012 for some immediate help.

  3. d1shima December 11, 2011 6:51 am

Good Luck to all those being recruited: players and coaches!

Is head coaching search progressing? Any idea when they’ll name someone?

  6. Heard it thru the grapevine December 11, 2011 6:53 am

Arizona: Rich Rod has retained / hired offensive line coach Robert Anae.

From reported candidates, Banker is likely the best choice. Experience….you win with defense….it is reported he wants it…..need a fresh face….the turnaround will take time, but theycan win next year. Special teams as it relates to field position was really bad, from KO to punts. Technique in some cases was bad in several phases. This program needs vision and energy….the roster can win with some tweeks along with a leader—I hope the call comes soon get these kids together….get your position coaches in place and starting the marketing plan to get folks into that stadium….I have so much hope it is not funny. Go Warriors!!!!

  14. hillmok December 11, 2011 7:15 am

Hawaii fans stop being so naive with all the discussion about paying college athletes money to play that stuff already goes on, we have to join the ranks and pay these players to come here and play. All big time programs do it boosters behind the scene are showering these players with gifts and cash because they know recruiting is so extremely competitive. Screw the rules honest and nice people finish last. Just openening the discussion. I know players who have been paid since the late eighties on recruiting trips. Do NOT think this stuff is only isolated cases.

    #180-Pride

Dino Babers must have majored in Speech at UH. Only one, “I mean….” and “You know……” in his presentation!!!!! He will do well at Eastern Illinois and make UH proud!!

  16. Old School Dave December 11, 2011 7:21 am

Brian Norwood, Dino Babers, Joe Seumalo, Ken Niumatalolo, Albert “Buzzy” Preston, Rich Ellerson, Ivin Jasper, Kim McCloud, Tony Tuioti, among other former UH players now in the coaching ranks. Keep an eye on Inoke Funaki.

  17. Pomai December 11, 2011 7:24 am

As was determined last night at Murphys no matter who da coach, I still will be in my seat cheering and crying for da Warriors win or lose dats my team.

  18. Old School Dave December 11, 2011 7:27 am

Agree that defense wins games. Mark Banker is a teacher and stickler for technique and fundamentals. Good recruiter, also.

Never liked the, “Just get our offense back on the field and we’ll just outscore them” type of philosophy.

  19. wafan December 11, 2011 7:30 am

Hope the screening, selection, overview, management, and assorted keep-em-busy-so-they-feel-like-they-have-a-voice-and-it-appears-inclusion-is-important committees work efficiently and quickly to identify and hire a coach whose personality and philosophy closely matches what is needed to ensure success.

morning and ditto to ajoe kudos

Pomai you crying no mater wot lol btw how late you guys stayed?

  21. Garret December 11, 2011 7:34 am

Only 11 to 14 initial scholarships to offer? Do the 5 or so commits UH has already count towards that number? UH has been offering a number of scholarships to players under the interim staff also, which could cut that number even more.

This is something extremely critical to consider during the coaching search. If the new coach only has 5-9 scholarships to offer, there is no way to get the players he will want if he wants to change the systems on offense and defense. The players on the roster now were recruited for specific offensive and defensive systems/roles, where other systems might look for different types of players.

I cannot imagine a new coach ever having just 14 scholarships to offer. However, from what ST writes, it looks like the number could be quite a bit smaller than 14. That would seem to indicate to me that if the new coach wants to change either the offensive or defensive system, we could see some players being cut like what many coaches do when they take over at a school.

  22. Garret December 11, 2011 7:38 am

It is interesting to note that the MWC did try to get SMU and Houston, but they decided to stay in CUSA last year. I had read many people say that the MWC should add SMU and Houston last year to get to 12 schools and get a championship game, but it looks like those schools weren’t interested.

The Mountain West “contacted Houston and SMU last spring/summer about the possibility of joining the conference,” said an e-mail last month from San Diego State Athletic Director Jim Sterk. “They were not interested at that time and they are still not interested.”

Houston and SMU previously were speculated as expansion candidates of the Mountain West almost every time the Mountain West lost a member, especially when Texas Christian announced it was leaving in November 2010.

Mahalo to all the people involved in last night’s Tsaiko Christmas Party. Nice to see familiar faces and meet new ones too. I had a great time. We have some funny people on this blog. Or should I say good fun people. Or both.

  25. HawaiiMongoose December 11, 2011 7:47 am

Banker looks to me like the DC of a declining program (remember that OSU lost to Sacramento State this year on its way to a 3-9 record) who sees an opportunity to get out before one more losing season results in his boss, himself and the rest of the staff being fired. Plus he’s never been a head coach in his career.

As Obi-wan would say, I have a bad feeling about this.

  26. ai-eee-soos December 11, 2011 7:57 am

Gotta make all those scholarships count – can’t make a mistake.

‘ … But as of this morning, it was estimated the Warriors will have between 11 and 14 initial scholarships to offer. …”

  27. ai-eee-soos December 11, 2011 8:07 am

Just askin – why do we want another Def Coord as the new Head Coach ?

Wasn’t the previous HC a very successful DC ? What happened to him ?

  28. d1shima December 11, 2011 8:08 am

    Offense sells tickets.

    Defense wins championships.

Pays yer $, takes yer pick….

  29. Old School Dave December 11, 2011 8:09 am

Could never understand how some coaches got not one, but two chances to fail miserably as head coaches. Buddy Teavens (Tulane and Stanford) and Keith Gilbertson (Cal & UW) come to mind.

  36. krump1_AKA_protector December 11, 2011 8:24 am

I agree that time is of the essence in selecting a coach. Whomever the HC, I want to see Rolo retained to do his thing in an unrestrained fashion; I’d like to see a tight end incorporated into the mix and have no problem with 2 backs in the backfield, either. Everything will hinge on how fast the talented (but inexperienced) newbies on the O-Line can jell and offer some semblance of protection for the QBs. As the O-Line goes, so goes the O.

  37. duffer December 11, 2011 8:25 am

With the addition of Kalei and Vicki, Na Wahine should do well in WAC play. Their front line rotation will get stronger and Kuehu will be better in the front court.

    HawaiiMongoose #25,

Unfortunately we will probably be stuck with a coach that has no head coaching experience. So with that stated, you need to look for the best Assistant/Associate coach there is out there and with that said, I think Banker is one of the top one’s out there that still has strong ties to the Hawaii recruiting grounds. The name would be Duane Akina.

  50. FattyMcButterpants December 11, 2011 8:52 am

    # 25 June Jones wasn’t exactly coming off a stellar year when we brought him in. Lost a bunch of games in a row to close the season and struggled on offense.

  51. kama krab December 11, 2011 8:52 am

    The final sentence should read,

The other name would be Duane Akina.

    S. Mississippi lost their head coach (as did Houston– went to Texas A&M).

Assistants and coordinators from these teams– especially offense are being heavily courted and by the bowl will probably be hired somewhere else.

Don’t think OSU Banker a good fit here.

If the glove does not fit you’ve got to aquit…

Like the one poster there says, college athletics do a lot of good things for students and community.

Can’t believe the perfesser was an All-American hockey player. Didn’t that distract him from dealing with a thousand other issues? Now, I’m really depressed. I didn’t realize UH had a thousand other issues besides athletics to worry about. Oh woe is us. The sky must truly be falling.

    Thanks perfesser.

  77. Kevin December 11, 2011 10:15 am

C’mon, you guys should know by now that when an academic-like individual speaks out against athletics and it’s financial and overall role in the university, it’s all bullshhheeet.

Much like this one annoying lady yelling at the big screen at the SSC last night during an NCAA ad. She kept screaming about “what about money for the performing arts”?

    Dumb ****.

  78. Kevin December 11, 2011 10:15 am

    DPK,

Also, let’s try to REMEMBER the near $3,000,000.00 annually (or per semester, I can’t remember) in tuition that UH receives from non-scholarship student-athletes.

  83. Kevin December 11, 2011 10:20 am

    Ipu Man,

I was too was trying to figure out what D1 and DPK were referring to. It’s a link in NYUH’s post #32.

  84. A-House December 11, 2011 10:21 am

Glad I read the blog this morning before posting my remarks to a certain sociology prof at UH who’s article was less than interesting.

My questions to you, Prof Johnson, is what have you done for UH in all of your tenured years for the betterment of UH and its students? How have you helped your students become better citizens and contributors to Hawaii and the world at large upon graduation? How many graduation ceremonies have you attended to congratulate all those who majored in Sociology?

How quickly you forget that it was UH President who offered $1.1 million salary to Coach Mack. Why don’t you “bitch” to Pres Greenwood about all the $$$ being spent for athletics. This leads to my last question, How much $$$ did you generate, via donations or grants, for UH in all your tenured years at UH? $1.1 million? NONE?

Please enlighten us in your next article. Thank you!

  85. Kevin December 11, 2011 10:22 am

    A-house,

The next article regarding such individual I MIGHT care about probably will be an obituary.

The world is too crowded as it is.

  86. Garret December 11, 2011 10:22 am

Fresno State is going to beef up their Athletic Budget to compete in the MWC. It should be noted that UHAD was spending far more than most WAC schools, but UHAD’s budget could be below the average budget in the MWC since UH is looking at cutting budget and other MWC schools are rapidly increasing their budgets. I see that even Wyoming is talking about going to a $30 mil budget for Athletics…

Despite the economy and a sharp decline in ticket sales this season, Fresno State will have more money for its next football coach, his assistants and other expenses that go into building a winning program.

Fresno State also will benefit in 2012 from an increase in student activity fees. University President John Welty raised the fees this year by $70 per semester and earmarked $60 of the increase for athletics — about $2.4 million per year.

“Whoever the new coach is, they’ll kick up the budget,” said Harry Gaykian, a longtime member of the Bulldog Foundation.

    http://www.fresnobee.com/2011/12/10/2645395/fresno-state-plans-to-show-bulldogs.html

  87. jm2375 December 11, 2011 10:24 am

Proves the ivory tower theory AGAIN. Guess he doesn’t read much outside his chosen field. How many studies have shown that success in athletics relates to more money, more applications, etc, etc. for the school. Besides, how can he diss all those student-athletes he has in class…

  88. Kevin December 11, 2011 10:26 am

Don’t imagine things people, student-athletes get a lot of crap just for the “athlete” part from some professors. They’ve already been on their “quiet” s**t list just for being an athlete for the university.

Not just football or basketball, but there have been student-athletes that cite a strong sense of discrimination from some professors compared to non-student-athletes.

I wonder what these professors think when the same people they discriminate against win ALL CONFERENCE ACADEMIC HONORS year after year….??????

  89. d1shima December 11, 2011 10:31 am

    Honor System

Sounds good! We go try ’em at the Stadium, too! 👿

  90. Musashi December 11, 2011 10:36 am

Re: #86 . . . Interesting, especially since just the other day the Fresno Bee reported that the FSU athletic department was running $750,000 in the red this year.

  91. Capitolist/WassupDoc December 11, 2011 10:40 am

DrDoc and I planned to stop by Murphy’s last night after the five-set Regional final, but a combination of having been up for 16 hours and the carpy weather made us decide to go directly home instead. A normal 30 minute drive from lower Manoa to Kailua actually took nearly 45 minutes because of two accidents and really heavy rains in los montanas.

BACK TO HIRING PROCESS: At the end of a community meeting yesterday morning, I was able to speak with State Senator Jill Tokuda who chairs the committee overseeing higher education about the hiring process. She made it very, very clear that the Legislature is NOT directly involved in the hiring process for any administrative position in the UH System – especially in the Department of Athletics.

The Legislature appropriate CIP funds for physical improvements, but the department’s operating funds outside of HGEA and UPW employees assigned to the Lower Campus are the its responsibility through ticket sales, student fees, and donations/contributions/sponsorships.

Does that mean that there is no communication between Downtown and Manoa? Of course not, but the the Downtowners have no more influence than any other group or individuals.

The decision to hire a new president or chancellor or athletics director or coach is set on campus because of the semi-autonomous status of the UH System.

Again, the Advisory Committee meets late Monday afternoon – probably in the third floor conference room. How they’ll set the criteria & evaluate the applications are not known at this time. Meanwhile, Donovan is going through his own set of decision-making standards so that when the Committee meets up with him later in evening, the process is set in full motion.

The authority is in Donovan’s hands although he will certainly be considering the input made by others in the System as well as people who have taken the time to contact him directly with their suggestions and thoughts. Frankly, I have no idea if or how the anonymous comments by people who post on the various sports blog will have any impact.

Finally, here in Hawai`i, there are explicit and clear laws and administrative procedures on hiring public employees – about the only exception to these are staff members working directly for legislators and high-ranking administrators. However, even these folks have to have the skills to do a good job. Comparing the University of Hawai`i’s head coach hiring methods to other US schools – state institutions or private – makes no sense. If you do not like the methods used, then work with your legislators to change the hiring laws.

    rb,

Been following Hal Mumme off and on since he landed in D3 ball in Texas. He took a struggling program at McMurry U. to the playoffs this year with a 2nd place finish in their conference.

He is leading them up to D2 next year with his Air Raid offense.

One really interesting thing early this season when they played FCS Sam Houston St. and were WAY overmatched was that he kept going for it on 4th down…even from deep in his own territory!

When asked to explain it he basically said that SHS spreads the ball around so well that he thought he could help his defense out by shortening the field that they had to defend! 😯

    #92:

hey, we know that player! met him several times through his parents.

Looks to have agility, speed, strength, quickness, nose to the ball – especially on defense – not much of a punter tho.

Knowing his parents, they would not put any pressure on the HC to offer a scholarship – if he is a walk-on does he get free tuition? this would save a scholarship for another player.

    A-House:

    From the UH System website:

M.R.C. Greenwood became the 14th president of the University of Hawai‘i in August 2009. She unites strong belief in the exceptional caliber of the UH System with determination to develop the university’s voice as a national leader in higher education.

The Department of Athletics in January, 2008, was in turmoil. June Jones had left, Herman Frazier had been fired, the Chancellor had been on the job less than six months, David McClain had given notice that he would be leaving his position by June, 2009, and the entire UH System was just beginning to feel the economic downturn.

However, as reported elsewhere, the decision to offer McMackin was a collective decision of the people who were trying to get things moving forward. In retrospect, it turned out to be a bad one, but, at the time, there was not much choice.

By the way, for those of you who want to know how many grants any professor has brought into the UH System, that information is available. Contact Gregg Takeyama, Director of Communications and Government Affairs – his phone number is available at www dot hawaii dot edu slash dir – and ask for help in tracking down the data.

  96. Manoa2 December 11, 2011 11:18 am

I support athletics, including football, as a part of the University.

However, it needs to be an even playing field, if the Administration expects academic departments and research programs to fund themselves through grants and internally generated money, the football program must likewise be self-funded with no extra money coming from the state or from other departments or functions at the UH.

It means– and I believe strongly in this– apart from a modest student fee for athletics, the fans must pay for what they want in football. Tickets and PPV PLUS donations must support the program, including any $1 Million coaches. Just like the symphony and the arts– users pay for it (although there is a role for subsidizing these things in education and for educational purposes).

  97. Old School Dave December 11, 2011 11:19 am

Funny scene from the movie THE PROGRAM: Faculty academic rep was cutting down and criticizing the money and emphasis on football in front of a panel of university administrators. The football coach shot back, “When’s the last time you had 80,000 people attend a frickin chemistry experiment?” Just a movie, but it does make a point.

The Flutie Effect, it is called?

  98. Old School Dave December 11, 2011 11:26 am

Josh Dovovan looks like a player. Runs well and has room to get bigger and stronger. The internet, social media, and technology makes so much easier for a player to get noticed by recuiters.

In the old days, they used to tell players to put together an 8 mm film, stick a piece of paper in a specific place in the reel, send it off to a school you were interested in. When you got the film back you could tell if the coaches watched your film if the paper was still there or gone.

How much did UH get for paying Mack $1.1 Million all these years? Lots of negative publicity starting with the remarks about Notre Dame. And several “bombs” in his public speaking at community events (where he was an invited guest speaker).

I think some of the faculty did a lot more for less than Mack.

    Re: Scholies.

Including the grayshirts and promised commitments, the number was 11 remaining available scholarships. But with medical and academic issues, there could be up to three more available, thus the 11-to-14 range.

Under McMackin, UH started issuing letters of promised offers. It’s not binding, on the player’s part, but UH promises to hold a scholarship until a certain point. So John Smith might receive a written offer in September. In, say, December, UH might say if John Smith doesn’t make an oral commitment, there’s no guarantee they can hold a scholarship.

Oral commitments, of course, don’t count. But yet they do count. It gives a team an idea of how many scholarships are left to offer.

    Tom & Others

Check out the following story in CIVIL BEAT – there is a paywall, but anyone can read one story a day.

    http://www.civilbeat.com/articles/2011/12/09/14154-how-much-will-uh-football-coach-earn-in-retirement/

Here’s a brief excerpt from the story:

Despite a seven-figure salary that ranked him as Hawaii’s highest-paid state government employee the past four years, University of Hawaii Football Coach Greg McMackin won’t be drawing a state pension anywhere near his working pay.

That’s in part due to a cap the state’s public pension system adopted last year, as well as the fact that McMackin only worked for the university for six years. Retirement benefits are based on an employee’s highest three years of pay and length of service.

But he might still get nearly $30,000 a year out of a Hawaii pension and, because he’s 66, could take it anytime.

  108. ai-eee-soos December 11, 2011 12:26 pm

    re: #107.

WOW – he sure made out.

and, probably Pres McLain never thought of that, when he made the offer.

  109. Stephen Tsai December 11, 2011 12:26 pm

    UH football is very profitable.

    And it is entirely self-sufficient.

(The student fee doesn’t go toward football, it goes into a separate fund.)

What would be equitable is for the athletic department to keep all the revenue it generates for merchandise, concession and parking.

But the parking money is used to help pay off the bond used to pay for the construction of the parking extension.

The merchandise money funds other programs.

Now what UH should do is change its one-tuition-fits-all system. The way it is now, a pre-med major pays the same as a journalism major.

  110. jm2375 December 11, 2011 1:04 pm

#109 – journalism major? Thought you said the program doesn’t exist.

  111. A-House December 11, 2011 1:33 pm

    Manoa2:

Truly, I was not aware that the UH-Manoa “administration’s policy” was that each academic department had to be self sufficient and raise its own operational funds (I will assume from donations, grants, and awards) for all department expenses including salaries for all staff( clerical, maintenance, etc.) and professors.

How well is each department doing? Should the “administration” publish each department’s (college) end-of-year fiscal position/statement as they do for athletics? If a department has a short-fall, how does the “administration” make up the deficit? Which academic department is the most successful? Least successful? Every year, the College of Business Administration sends me a letter soliciting funds.

By the way, do you know how the “administration” will allocate the millions that were pledged/collected in their 10-year drive from individuals/business community.

  112. A-House December 11, 2011 1:39 pm

    ST #109:

BTW, do you know if any college/department contributes to the repaying of the bond to extend the parking structure?

I will presume they do so because students from all colleges/departments use the parking structure.

Or, is it only UHAD that does this? If so, it seems very biased on whose shoulder the burden falls. And, any $$$ associated with the UHAD or collected because of athletic events should be used to offset the so called $10 million builtup deficit.

  113. A-House December 11, 2011 1:45 pm

    Pensions:

I believe the Federal law stipulates that upon completing 5 years an individual is entitled to 50% of those funds.

Further, if you continue working, say 7 years, you recieve 70% until 10 years after which you a fully vested in your pension.

Perhpas this a contributing factor why Coach Mack would receive nearly $30,000/year in retirement pay. This would be $2,500 monthly.

For those of you who are interested in getting the current status of funding – private as well as public – that information is available from several different sources including the three public employee unions representing UH System employees, the Operating & Capital Budgets, the Board of Regents, and the Department of Budget & Fiscal Services.

Funding for higher education comes from many different sources, but public institutions such as UH receive significant f$$$$ from state income taxes & the GET for core/basic coverage; however, research in any field almost always is covered by grants & subsidies from other sources – including federal dollars, taxes on booze, oil, ciggiebutts, etc., foundations, donations, endowments, etc., etc.

The difference between the Department of Education and the University of Hawai`i System is the latter’s semi-autonomous status. Don’t forget that this has only been in effect for a decade so that how things were done “back when” cannot be compared to how higher education is funded today.

As I’ve pointed out several times over the past several months, the impact on the UH System – primarily the Manoa campus – in losing earmarks along with reductions in federal grants and private donations because of the economy and the teapartytypes in the US House has had a profound impact on moving forward.

Frankly, even if UH had won all 13 games and was on its way to a bowl game in Nowhere, Nebraska, the System would not be in much better shape although maybe the Department of Athletics would probably be able to reduce its debt a little bit and add a few more summer school tuition scholarships in all 19 sports.

Essentially what I am saying here is that the issues are hugely complex and are not simple to solve. It takes ALL of us – taxpayers and ticketbuyers and Hawai`i residents and business owners and _________(fill in the gap) to pick up the Higher Education Wagon and carry it forward.

  120. Stephen Tsai December 11, 2011 2:18 pm

Same general functions except B&FS also handles taxation and other revenues whereas the State Department of Taxation handles tax revenues. The third state agency dealing with $$$$ is the Department of Accounting & General Services.

  152. expat December 11, 2011 6:16 pm

It seems to me that a lot of readers are missing the point of that editorial. He has some very valid points. His main issue is by what metric a head coach is considered successful. I have to assume that as an all-American hockey player he had some kind of a scholarship and it would seem that he made good use of his degree.

How many of the young men on the team are going to be able to make a living on football? One or two per class might be fortunate enough to make some money playing professionally IF injuries don’t derail them. A few others might get into coaching.

Is it more important that the team win and make money or that the student athletes get a good education, whether on scholarship or not, so that they can be prepared for the next phase of their lives? Ideally you do both. The whole point of the editorial was that our priorities have become out of whack as the money involved in college football and basketball keeps increasing.

I think we all know that.

  153. Ipu Man December 11, 2011 6:17 pm

By the way, Lake Oswego put a beat-down on Sheldon to finish 14-0 and win their first state championship. The running back for LO rolled up over 330 yards I believe as well as 4 TDs — two of which were on runs longer than 50 yards. The LO offensive & defensive lines were completely dominant and Sheldon was shut out in the 2nd half. The LO punter was the only loser as he had no opportunity to practice his art.

I sure hope UH had a coach at the game.

Fans are upset that they would be unable to travel to the game following the Golden Eagles’ 49-28 win over Houston in the Conference USA title game on Saturday.

I think Banker had a good pass defense but a very poor run defense this season. I think his run defense was 11th in the PAC12.

  164. WarriorNY December 11, 2011 6:49 pm

    What a game… Let’s go Giants!

  165. RedZone December 11, 2011 6:49 pm

Dallas has special teams problems too.

  166. Ipu Man December 11, 2011 7:02 pm

It doesn’t make sense to hire Banker after letting MAC go.

Both had good 2010 records, but bad 2011 seasons.

    It doesn’t make sense…

  167. WarriorNY December 11, 2011 7:04 pm

    @165,

Lol I was thinking the same thing…

  168. d1shima December 11, 2011 7:08 pm

I could deal with 20+ point losses to Wisconsin, Stanford and Oregon much better than one to UNLV

  169. Really? December 11, 2011 7:08 pm

Rolo “unleased”? He was given the job after coaching for two years, one in JUCO and Ron Lee was fired to give him room to be “unleased”. He had Mouse Davis as an assistant coach who in case you forgot Ipu Man INVENTED the offense Rolo is trying to run.

Now I like this blog, the posters are witty, friendly and knowledgeable. But some of you are personal friends with these assistant coaches and quite frankly the overall health and future of the program is far more important than lobbying for coaching retreads. When you hitch your wagon to a head coach and the wagontrain falls off a cliff, you take your responsibility and move on to another wagontrain or if you are lucky stay on in a demoted position and wait your turn again.

No top notch head coaching candidate in American wants to inherit 4 or 5 guys who come from a failed prior regime with longtime local ties, political clout and media connections. Especially in the coordinator positions which make or break a head coach’s future and positions he is going to want to name himself.

Quite frankly it’s obvious that one or more of these so-called loyal McMackin regime assistants who are ultimately responsible for his failures by not taking care of the positions they are paid to coach are now throwing him under the bus, leaking out information stating that he “held them back” or “got in their way” and lobbying strong to stay with the next head coach. It’s typical UH small minded nonsense and another reason why we continue to look in the rear view mirror trying to recreate glories of times past and can never seem to have vision and hope for new rebirths and new victories in the future. If June could bring in the run and shoot after years of running the football why can’t a new visionary scrap the run and shoot and bring in a fresh look on both sides of the ball and win games and recruits?

They had their chance, they didn’t get it done (all of them as a staff) and now is not their time. They lost those privileges with poor execution, clock management, suspect recruiting, a terrible kicking game, bad schemes, non existent half time adjustments and overall a very loose, undisciplined product. I support the new coach, his decisions on his staff and his schemes and until he proves otherwise do not feel he should “inherit” anyone from the old staff unless he sees fit.

Nobody from any football staff is irreplaceable, and nobody is more important to the program. We seem to forget that on this island as we make assistant coaches Kings of little kingdoms and give them much more clout than they need or deserve. It’s all about the program, not cult of personality. Simple as that. Go Warriors

  170. expat December 11, 2011 7:37 pm

If I were a Boise State fan I would be up in arms regarding the total lack of respect that Kellen Moore has gotten from the Heisman voters.

49-3 as a four year starter. The three losses were by a combined 5 points. Two of the three losses were to TCU and both were by a point. The other was in OT. No career losses to BCS conference teams — and that includes beating Oregon (x2), Georgia, and Virginia Tech — all ranked and not conference bottom dwellers.

over 14,300 career passing yards. 140 TDs vs 26 ints. Career 70% passer.

49-3. How is he not even a finalist? This guy is the most successful Div 1A college QB in modern history. If Kellen Moore can’t win it I think it is safe to say that we aren’t going to see a Heisman winner from a non-BCS school, ever.

  171. Ipu Man December 11, 2011 7:40 pm

Dear Mr. Really sir or Madam,

I in no way know Rolo or any

of the coaches or as you so

vomit out: ” But some of you

    are personal friends with these

    assistant coaches.” Don’t try to

“BULLY” me. I am 72 years too old

for your crap. If you are so upset

with Rolo, then you have a problem.

Not me. I am good with whoever

Donovan picks. But I happen to

    preferRolo and his offense style.

And you are certainly free to show who you like

and I in no way will try to DUMB you down.

Now I will forgive you this time for your

    arrogance and unfriendly attitude because

you are supposed to be a Tsaiko… I hope

you will be more kind and considerate of

other people’s comments. Shame on you.

  172. Hawaiian December 11, 2011 8:04 pm

Banker? Really? Because he recruits ‘Hawaii’ well? He gets, on average, one or two local (Hawaii) player(s) a year to go to OSU, now he recruits ‘Hawaii’ well? Really? How about this: he coaches in the PAC12 (which is better than the WAC); USC, UCLA, Standford, Oregon, California, Washington, Arizona, Arizona State didn’t offer a scholarship so they need to choose between Oregon State or Washington State (oh yeah, don’t forget Utah and Colorado); they wanted (or were told) to go away for school? Should I keep stating the obvious?

  176. kama krab December 11, 2011 8:11 pm

    Ipu Man #158,

One season does not make a career cause guess what if Banker stays at OSU, I will guarantee he brings back with him another solid recruit or two from the top ten list of Hawaii High School seniors. That just what he does.

So if you put it that way, then yah he and the OSU team had a bad season but guess what, they will still recruit Hawaii better than pretty much anyone that comes here. The reason for that, Mark Banker.

    Just saying

  177. tommui December 11, 2011 8:17 pm

Koakane #173 – darn – forgot the score but UH did beat UC Davis by about 15 points. The UCD team did lead = mostly by 3-pointers.

Miah did well – 7 or so assist.

  178. koakane December 11, 2011 8:20 pm

    mahalo tommui good to know

  179. kama krab December 11, 2011 8:21 pm

    Hawaiian #172,

But isn’t Hawaii recruiting a problem for Hawaii? That’s all that matters. Hawaii has a hard time recruiting. If we can’t hold down our own state then we do not deserve to be a D1 program. Cause guess what, we have some very solid prospects year in and year out and a whole bunch of them have been going to OSU because of Mark Banker. So stating that Banker recruiting Hawaii is really not a big thing, than I guess you really don’t know what team your talking because the last I knew we where talking about Hawaii football which has had a hard time recruiting Hawaii and Banker recruits Hawaii well.

#169 is correct. Coach Banker would be a great coach. All of you who watch the Warrior practice see a lot of down time. Players on one knee, helmets off, laughing, not paying attention, etc… I overheard a NEW DB say that Coach Miano yells so much that he is the “great white hype”, no respect. I love Hawaii but we need more discipline. I have watched practice since Dave Homes in 1969, we need to be more serious.

    NO thanks.

    Kama Krab #179,

READ my points again and do your research! These kids would’ve gone to the ‘other’ (better) schools in that conference if they were offered but they settled with OSU! They weren’t going to UH or any other WAC school.

Do this for yourself, tell me what year (hopefully in the last 20-25 years), did UH ever out recruit everyone else (for the TOP 10 players in the state). THE BEST PLAYERS HAVE ALWAYS LEFT TO PLAY FOR THE BIG BOYS!

I love Hawaii, grew up here on the Leeward side, went AWAY to play football and came back home because I love this place! I’ve got season tickets for my family and I…and I don’t miss a game for any reason! I want UH to be very good but I am a realest…we will get some kids but our main source for great players will always be from the mainland. Only because there are not enough good local boys to keep home…I wish they all good stay home!

  209. kama krab December 11, 2011 9:33 pm

    Hawaiian #201,

Um you just made my point. First does it matter who didn’t give offers and who did. OSU made the offers and the kids accepted. Who is the point recruiter in Hawaii, ah how about Mark Banker.

With regards to recruiting Hawaii. Didn’t that what i said. HAWAII HAS A HARD TIME RECRUITING HAWAII. Man before you respond, you gotta read what is being said.

Mark Banker recruits Hawaii hard year in and year out and always, I repeat always comes out with a solid top ten recruiting class in Hawaii. Could he do that for UH, definitely. The man has connections across the state. This does not just mean Oahu, it means across the state.

  210. al December 11, 2011 9:34 pm

mr. falemalu…nice to meet you. we could have lunch with some birdies if you like.

kama krab…plus banker has a passion for plate lunches.

  214. kama krab December 11, 2011 9:40 pm

You know I am not tooting the Mark Banker horn just for my health. I am doing it because the man is a proven recruiter here, has a lot of connection throughout the state, and he also has a very solid resume with both college and NFL experience. When in the NFL as a coordinator he coached a unit that came in fourth in the NFL in overall defense. He has been named one of the top defensive coordinators in the Pac-10 many times. Like I said, the record speaks for itself. The man is a solid coach and deserves a shot to make it happen here. You might even get the return of an old friend in Coach Cav. Anything could happen and yes it might just be Miano but Banker does deserve a very long look.

  215. Capitolist/WassupDoc December 11, 2011 9:40 pm

Forgot to ask earlier in the week……what is the purpose of tomorrow’s lunch? Is it By Invitation Only? If so, then why is it being discussed here on an open-2-the-public blog? If not, then where is it being held?

Great game this evening – and yes, for the doubters at the BYU Post-Gate, Miah Ostrowski is here in person playing a great game despite only practicing four times with the team starting on Thursday.

One thing that bothers me, however, is that there are rumors going around that Shaquille (sp?) Stokes is not a Happy Camper & may quit the team. Anyone here got any fo’real information on this?

BUT I can wait till Thursday or Friday if they need a couple of extra days to mull over the best out of the top 5…. I just hope their decision is one leaning towards giving the Warriors the best possible chance at success and not so much one of cutting costs…

As you know, I’ve been posting up a storm about my concerns regarding any cuts in what it being invested back into the football program. With the new Conference and all the Conference realignments, this is not the time to be cutting back on the Football budget but the time to bolster it.

banker minus Cav = deal breaker.

Banker alone won’t be enough to energize the fan base. Cav is a guy a certain amount fans really want back. With both recruiting in state there’s a greater hope more of our quality big boys will stay home.

  233. cocobean December 11, 2011 10:53 pm

Every candidate is going to say that recruiting is going to be their top priorty. That they’re going to put a staff together that’s going to accomplish this. That special emphasis will be given to keep as many local prospect home.

If Banker was smart he’d say recruiting is his top priority with special emphasis on O and D linemen. That he’s going to build his team from the ground(trenches) up. He’ll get Cav to recruit the O linemen and coach them up. That he’ll retain Tuioto to recruit D linemen and coach them up.

That he’ll stockpile the bigs until we reach a reloading rather than a rebuilding situation in those two areas.

Energy and Vision….may the best man win. Regarding the Defense wins comment…..popular opinion aside…..anyone who knows football played coached or whatever knows defense wins games. Can not judge someone on anything other than the overall body of their work….experience, accomplishment, ability. I like offense and I love points but a lot of what has gone on and the results tie back to team speed and defense. This roster properly deployed can win next year…..now we just need the right guy outfront and some folks at certain positions…..change is good when it is done with purpose and intent…..Go Warriors!!!!

Regarding coach Cavanaugh, didn’t he say in the past he would not return here to be a position coach or was someone else? Dunno if he has interest in being a coordinator and doesn’t strike me as the head coach type.

Furthermore, there is the Cavanaugh and Langsdorf connection. Langsdorf donated his kidney which basically saved Cav’s wife. They seem inseparable because of that bond and both their families seem to be happy with their situation in Corvallis.

Dunno about Banker. Watched a couple of videos and just didn’t get a good vibe. Reminded me somewhat of a less grumypish version of vonAppen. I’m not big on Miano to take over but comparing the two when they speak, Rich has charisma and is able to grab your attention. Some OSU supporters also mentioned he has some personality quirks which may end up rubbing people here the wrong way.

  243. bigislandkurt December 12, 2011 6:05 am

I’m sure some of these OSU coaches are being pro-active in thinking about their futures. Another season like they had this past year might signify an end to the Riley era in Corvallis.

I have to believe that EVERY coach on the UH staff is now looking for a job. To sit back and cross their fingers would not be a good approach to take.

    Good Mrning Tsaikos.

    BIK

  244. Manoa2 December 12, 2011 6:29 am

If you have the talent to dominate on defense– defense can be a winner.

But if you are a building mid major or a lesser BCS TEAM, you need a high scoring offense that throws the ball or runs the option for lots of yards and points without big talent– it is the equalizer as proven nu teams like us, Urban Meyers Utah, Houston, Southern Mississipi, and many others.

And it helps your defense because it forces dominant run/pass teams to go one dimension and throw to keep up or catch up.

  245. kkobi425 December 12, 2011 6:32 am

Is coach Mack going to be reunited with Leach in Pulllman and become his DC? Just some rumblings from the Cougar faithful I work with.

    Great Morning All!

    Great point, Manoa2!

Tsai not tellin’ us something. I base this pretext on the subtext within the context. Maybe I should send Tsai a text message and ask him what knows…

  249. Shoko December 12, 2011 7:25 am

    Morning folks!

Maybe ST knows, or maybe they are being pretty tight lipped about the hiring process.

    Inquiry minds need to know!

  250. RedZone December 12, 2011 7:26 am

Just me but I think Cav could be a coach that could excite fans.

    Miano is coach…

Here’s what some people from the Coaches By the Numebers website think who might be a good fit for Hawaii. Noticed that they think someone with Hawaii ties would be successful.

    mih –

The tacirturn one employs a coy ploy which we now enjoy. We are sure he has great reasons, but its fun to watch his masterful handling of this high drama. I can almost see him stroking a long fu manchu type mustache while deep in thought.

  255. madeinhawaii December 12, 2011 7:52 am

Hmmm.. on whose face is that Fu Manchu mustache on?

  256. RedZone December 12, 2011 7:53 am

  257. Bugaz December 12, 2011 7:54 am

RC was really hyping up Miano. I was surprised that BC didn’t jump all over it as much as he’s been on the Miano bandwagon. Anyhow RC comments towards Miano makes me think give Miano a chance. Good luck in choosing the right man JD!!!!

Maybe I was afraid you would beat me up for my views and comments…

  259. RedZone December 12, 2011 7:57 am

Didn’t RC have a spat with the high school coach and his son transferred to another school?

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

  261. wowlaulau December 12, 2011 8:08 am

#214, yes but he is recruiting to OS which is a BCS school. Will he still have the same points to pitch at Hawaii? Pac 10 vs MWC….

  262. Da Punchbowl Kid December 12, 2011 8:11 am

On his. Did you think he’d be stroking yours while thinking deep thoughts?

  263. Shoko December 12, 2011 8:19 am

I would hate to be in JD’s shoes.

  264. madeinhawaii December 12, 2011 8:22 am

    #262…

Maybe JJ’s here sporting a new look… both looking at the list of contenders.. JJ in the back.. Tsai in front, left hand over his shoulder…stroking JJ’s right Fu Manchu.. while JJ strokes his left Fu Manchu…
