Staffer is departing

By Stephen Tsai on March 14, 2012

By mutual agreement, Juan Lozano is leaving the Hawaii football program. Lozano reportedly has accepted a job in Florida. Lozano served as the Warriors’ director of player development. Last week, he worked as the coordinator of UH’s pro day in Carson, Calif. Lozano is a friendly guy who works hard. Wishing him well in his future endeavors. Head coach Norm Chow said there are no immediate plans to fill the position. Applications are not being accepted at this time. * […]

Still going

By Stephen Tsai on March 13, 2012

No rest for the recruiters. The Warriors have made about 25 conditional offers, including to the top prospects in the state. So far, they have received one acceptance, from Kahuku lineman John Waa. As always, the Warriors primary need is linemen. * * * * * The softball team’s popularity is reflected in the TV guide. The baseball and volleyball teams are playing Friday, but Oceanic has opted to show the softball game that night. Not sure how the areas […]

Passing interest

By Stephen Tsai on March 12, 2012

Norm Chow made official what was long assumed: He is the Warriors’ quarterbacks coach. Tommy Lee holds the title of offensive coordinator and, as such, will be a chief organizer, but Chow will handle the offense’s decision-making position. It makes sense. While Chow is a charismatic public speaker and has done well in implementing his vision the past three months, one of his strengths is in developing quarterbacks. (Google search Jim McMahon, Steve Young, Ty Detmer, Philip Rivers, Carson Palmer […]

End around

By Stephen Tsai on March 11, 2012

Defensive end Ipulasi “Lasi” Eselu is on the Warriors’ roster as a non-scholarship player. Eselu was nearly lost in transition after meeting UH’s entry requirements this past fall. Eselu made an oral commitment to the Warriors in July 2009, but did not meet the requirements to be part of the 2010 recruiting class. Eselu agreed to pay his own way this semester. * * * * * The Warriors are seeking relief help on their scholarship numbers. Ellis Henderson, who […]

In the running

By Stephen Tsai on March 10, 2012

Samson Anguay and Chinedu Amadi will compete at running back this spring. Both were slotbacks who redshirted as freshmen because of injuries last year. Anguay suffered a torn ACL during unsupervised workouts last June. Amadi suffered a shoulder injury during training camp. * * * * * The basketball Warriors are done for this season. What do they need to do next? Thoughts? * * * * * Congratulations to former UH coach Brian Smith and his wife (and original […]

Sounds like a plan

By Stephen Tsai on March 9, 2012

There was a coach addressing his team at halftime. The coach said the opposing team probably thought his team would make strategic changes in the second half, but he would counter by not making those moves. A player in the back of the locker room then said: “So our plan is not to do anything?” I’m reminded of that every time UH is faced with a metaphorical halftime. Red tape, back-room politics and other assorted factors always appear to jam […]

Search mission

By Stephen Tsai on March 8, 2012

Another UH coaching vacancy, another search committee. Let’s shake it up. We suggest the following for the committee: • Dennis Christianson — Face it, the basketball program needs an image boost. Last year, the Anthology Marketing Group won six Pele awards, which is local advertising’s equivalent of the Oscars. Clients include Microsoft, Sprint, Marriott, Hawaiian Airlines, Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau, American Savings, Farmers Hawaii, Bank of Hawaii and Hawaiian Telcom. Never met Christianson. Couldn’t even say if he’s dead […]

Takahara-Dias out

By Stephen Tsai on March 7, 2012

The season had barely ended when Dana Takahara-Dias was told she was being released as the Rainbow Wahine’s head basketball coach. It’s unfortunate it didn’t work out. The search begins. * * * * * Pro day is pau, and now former Warriors are preparing for the next step. Kaniela Tuipulotu “I’m rehabbing and getting healthy,” said Tuipulotu, who suffered a pulled hamstring while running the 40. He said he will rely on physical therapy to rehab his right leg. […]
