In the running
Samson Anguay and Chinedu Amadi will compete at running back this spring.
Both were slotbacks who redshirted as freshmen because of injuries last year. Anguay suffered a torn ACL during unsupervised workouts last June. Amadi suffered a shoulder injury during training camp.

The basketball Warriors are done for this season. What do they need to do next? Thoughts?

Congratulations to former UH coach Brian Smith and his wife (and original blog member) Liane on the birth of their daughter, Chloe.

Hoping to see a game today.
Anguay and Amadi should do well.
Congrats to Coach Smith! Hope he finds a job soon.
It would be a miracle if the NIT selects MBB. Still get chance.
Can’t wait for spring ball to arrive. I need my football fix.
Hi Bleedgreen!
Up early as had to complete screening for viruses – now back to sleep!
I don’t know how many seniors were on this years BB team but it sure did seem like they had a lot of potential. At times you could see it. We just need to solidify our team defense perhaps working the 2/3 zone a bit more. (We give up way to many layups) And work on our short game offensively. If Stokes can facilitate a little bit better after breaking down the defense instead of taking an off balance shot, we could see a great team next year. Nice Season, can’t wait for next year…
Happy Trails to all! We are having some dampness here in Arlington, TX too. Barbara and I send our Love!
Tomorrow, we set our clocks forward one hour! Then it will be five hours difference between Hawaii and Texas. We have had a relatively warm winter, and very little snow if any. Wondering if the summer will be more hot than the previous one. Nevertheless, Life is good, but it would be better if Barbara and I could go to Waikiki every day like we did in the past.
With the B-Ball Warriors, I hope we have enough scholies for 1 or 2 more pure Point Guards. I still feel Shaquille Stokes is more of a natural “2” than a “1”; that’s why the transition is harder for him (to accomplish Gib’s objectives the way Miah did so easily). With Orel Lev (the Israeli guard who seems destined to be Zane’s heir apparent) coming in and a several significant “bangers” being added in David Fotu, Caleb Dressler and the current red-shirt Christian Stanhardinger (to help Vander, Da Beast and Trevor), we look pretty solid. Still would love to see Blakes somehow find his way to Manoa, although we keep receiving disappointing news.
RB corp starting to look pretty deep for Warriors this Spring…
– Sterling Jackson (Sr.)
– John Lister (Soph.)
– Will Gregory (Fr.)
– Chinedu “Promise” Amadi (Fr.)
– Samson Anguay (Soph.)
– Josh Gonda (Fr.)
…with Steven Lakalaka joining roster in the Fall.
Now Warriors probably gotta build up the FB corp too….
– Joey Iosefa (Soph.)
– Jaref Leaf (Fr.)
– Dustin Elisara (Soph.)
Just wondering whether there’s any chance of Hogan Rosehill (Jr.) possibly re-joining the team.

Good mornin! MBB…I really thought there was so much potential with this team at the start. Hopefully, Coach Gib’s can recruit the missing pieces for next year. Players who’ll go after the rebounds and guys who can shoot 3’s are on my wish list! If those guys are already on this team then show me or sit.
Best wishes to Coach Smith & Liane on the new baby Chloe!
TEAM-DEFENSE, has got to improve, otherwise offensive scoring won’t help much. Speaking of team offense; definitely need 2-3 more, night-in-night-out scorerers. Looking foward to next seasons incoming recruits….lookin good….and agree, point guards to lead the offense. Good luck coach Gib and team.
Even though Warriors look to have alot of young underclassmen RBs for future seasons, I’m still hoping that the Warriors are still actively recruiting Kahuku RB Aofaga Wily for the 2013 recruiting class.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4H32UkfzBBA
JMHO that Warriors should also take a good look at Waipahu FB/LB Wesley Nagaseu as a potential FB prospect for the 2013 recruiting class too.

Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.
1. I like Coach Gib. He is passionate about football. seems to know what he’s doing.
gives the fans good enthusiasm and hope. hope he recruits well. gets a great shooter and a great point guard and someone who can hold their own in the middle. gonna need all 3 next season.
2. Go Go Go Coach Chow!
Great Morning All!
Congratulations to the new parents and welcome Chloe!
The very next thing MBB should do is come home. 😉
Coach Chow get way more da kine than me. goes to show, he’ll do what he gotta do to make a betta team. even wait if he thinks waiting is good. putting more RB in da mix gotta believe da man has a plan.
hoping Sione listening to his grandpa talking to him through youtube. that was awesome.
Gotta go bury a friend today. That makes 3 this past week. Cheez, just wen i thinkin the world is gonna end,
Coach Brian Smith and Liane make a Chloe.
whew. Good job. Good job. 😀
gotta go. hi ho hi ho. >>>>>>>>>>>
Good morning friends.
Best wishes to the MBBallers. May Gib work his magic and find some players in the off season. My kudos go to our Bigs — Vander and Josten. They played their butts off this year.
As for football, I kinda feel bad for all the smaller slots that we have like Anguay, Amadi, Paclebar and so on. The Norm Chow template sure don’t appear like there’s a place for the abundant number of smaller receivers we had during the previous era. Yes, they are moved to running back, but seriously, really? Hope things work out.
BIK
Good morning Tsaikos!
Hoping the weather holds up so da Wahine can come out & play today!
Congrats to Brian and Liane Smith.
Great Saturday world!!!
Good morning everyone!
I’m up inexplicably early today… and in a rare top 30!
Congratulations to Liane and family!
Congratulations to the new parents!
And, welcome to the world Chloe!
Whoo-hoo!!!
Again, thanks to the BasketBows for an awesome comeback yesterday. Next year, guys!
Happy birthday to the Big Guy!
Thanks for the reminder, wafan…
HAPPY BIRTHDAY ROBERT KEKAULA !!!
…another original Tsai-ko! 😎
Big Hilo –
Yesterday afternoon, I was mowing the lawn and enjoying the sun, when I get a phone call from Honolulu friend. The guy didn’t believe me when I told him the sun was shining. I know that this friend reads this blog daily, so if you can, please verify that it wasn’t raining in the Hilo downtown area. Thanks.
Wouldn’t you know, as I write this, the ua nui is falling! Bachi?
JM2375 wots da skys look like over der?
Much work ahead for Chow and Co in piecing roster players into his pro-set offense.
they will need to be part-coach and part-magician or creative.
Prolly all of the above.
It will be intriquing for sure, esp where redshirts are concerned. They are unknown quantities. In particular Gregory, Leaf and Amadi.
Of the total bunch, I dont see a classic TB.
Without seeing him, perhaps, Amadi.
To be sure, TBs tailored for Chow’s O will come in future recruiting classes.
So, for now, it will challenge Chow and Co to create packages that fit his current inventory of roster players. Spring auditions will lend a clue as to where the chairman is heading or what he needs to tweak.
Good to see midnight and mctruck posting from Texas this morning! Also “long time” to Hilo Moon!
sure hope vander returns for his senior year….with the summer olympics looming and all.
Good Morning Ya’ll,
Looks like the sun will be coming back out from hibernation today in beautiful Hawaii.
Good luck to SA and CPA on there competition for the RB spot.
The men’s basketball team will return next season stronger then this past season. It took a while, but they never gave up and played like true warriors. Great season, time for the off season training to begin.
Congrats too the new parents.
Pomai – I’m at Manoa McDonald’s. It’s windy and dry with the sun peeking through. MPI. bb field still has large puddles.
Good luck to Screechier. It’s SAT time. *tsaigh*
mornin
Good Luck to Samson Anguay and Chinedu Amadi.
Go Warriors !!!
I think Shaq should remain at 2-guard.
Good morning, gang!
Congratulations to Brian and Liane on Chloe’s arrival!!! Hope everything turns out well for a coaching job.
Good luck to Samson and Edu! Samson’s been coming to the softball games w/ some of the other players. Maybe we’ll see y’all there today.
GO SOFTBOWS!!!
bringing this over from last night’s blog …

UH offers UH offers QB Tyler Cogswell a scholarship; 6-5; 220; from Florida.
Thanks to Sportsbow.

Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂
Congrats to the Smiths. Welcome to the world Chloe! 🙂
Wish there was a way to “screech” here, because if there was, I’d screech:
“GO SCREECHER! ROCK THE SATS”
Luckily I can’t screech here. It actually sounds kind of disturbing.
Running backs are plentiful, talented and young. I think Anguay and Ahmadi got the “quicks” to be pretty good. Hope both stay healthy.
Can’t wait for Spring Ball.
soos,
Looks like there will be some serious competition for Cogswell. Chow’s Heisman resume should be a lot of help when UH goes after QB recruits. He’s the ONLY coach to have tutored three Heisman-winning quarterbacks.
Where is Miah projected to play?
in the chow offense, it calls for a tight end, wide receiver, and a slot receiver.
miah should be competing for slot receiver minutes.
Hey pj2 –
How you? Most times at receiver I would think.
running backs will have to specialize in this offense.
there are big backs, blocking big backs, third down backs, speed backs, short yardage backs. chow tends to rotate his skill people if they can be trusted to do the job. typically lots of people could see meaningful playing time.
Good morning all…new and old Tsaikos alike…far and near!
Someone please tell me who authored these lines…”Be still sad heart and cease repining, behind the clouds is the sun still shining. Thy fate is the common fate of all. Into each life some rain must fall, some days must be dark and dreary…” I’ve remembered these words for 50 years and haven’t run across them in any popular literature (i.e. Phil Steele, media guides, blogs) 😀 The last line begs for one’s personal completion. Mine is…”the rain nourishes and the spirit flourishes when the Son is here.”
Here’s my “I can dream wish”…I wish I can make the time to join Slugger and the other Tsaikos at the softball games this afternoon. Click my heels three times…
dragging over my last post last night…
The Rainy Day-Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
THE DAY is cold, and dark, and dreary;
It rains, and the wind is never weary;
The vine still clings to the mouldering wall,
But at every gust the dead leaves fall,
And the day is dark and dreary. 5
My life is cold, and dark, and dreary;
It rains, and the wind is never weary;
My thoughts still cling to the mouldering Past,
But the hopes of youth fall thick in the blast,
And the days are dark and dreary. 10
Be still, sad heart! and cease repining;
Behind the clouds is the sun still shining;
Thy fate is the common fate of all,
Into each life some rain must fall,
Some days must be dark and dreary.
CONGRATULATIONS to Coach Brian and Liane on the arrival of Chloe. Wishing only the very best and brightest future for you.
Knew I could depend on the Tsaikos!!! Thanks gmahoney!!!
Ah shucks, BG, I just googled it. I remember hearing that poem once also. English class, St. Francis.
BG and gmahoney, you guys good. I thought was Flip Wilson. 🙂
DPK, I’m good. Gotta go to a baby luau later. Missing baseball and softball. Maybe catch softball tomorrow.
gmahoney –
He coulda been writing about the weather in Kahalu’u on certain days… 😆 Go look outside, go, go try!
FW’s Geraldine.
With Basketball Season done, Coach Gib and staff should go out and recruit. Recruit athletic players. Try to scour the same paths New Mexico State have ventured, Canada, Stoneridge Prep, etc.
Moving these slots to the backfield says more about the coaches not knowing how to use slots than it does about these players’ ability to be productive running backs. Just my opinion. Given that the coaches have coached forever, that is probably a dumb comment. I think we need to continue to develop guys who can be productive slot receivers.

Coach Tommy Lee at Honolulu QB CLub Luncheon on Monday, Maple Gardens.

Eh, we related?
If, as they say, “into each life some rain must fall…somehow, I’ve gotten more than I deserve!!”
Best wishes to coach Brian and ohana.
G’day Tsaiko Nation!
Whoops! Almost porgot…Happy Birthday RK!
Pomai ~
Due to the scheduled SB games at noon and 4 PM.. You may call me, so we can reschedule the pick up plan this afternoon for another day.
lava…our roster was loaded with slotbacks and wide receivers.
we went from two slotbacks and two wide receivers (and sometimes a 5th receiver) on the field to one slot and one wr.
we exited this past season with 17 returning receivers.
moving some to other positions where they can be more productive is a wise decision.
anguay and amadi have both run the ball a lot with a lot of success in high school. this to me is a great move because the returning rb’s don’t have the slash and dash that these to possess.
It appears Idaho and Utah State will be heading to the pay-in tournaments.
Just as well.
Yesterday’s ending leaves everyone with hopeful feelings entering the offseason.
Yesterday’s ending also get Miah back onto the field sooner, which is better for him since everyone starts from scratch this spring.
Good point Al. I don’t associate slash and dash backs with Chow. Has he helped develop any stars at this position?
Re # 50, in terms of guys with eligibility not returning, my first guess would be Vander, and my second guess would be Shaq.
John White at Utah averaged over a 100 yds rushing per game last year. He is not a big back.
Coach Chow will probably say that it all starts up front anyway. If you can’t block you aint going anywhere.
red zone…that is the one.
lava…reading in to the press post game conference last night, i’d say they will be back.
did we lose the big guy from sacramento?
oh well. i had a feeling that the longer it took, the more likely that fanaika would opt for the big time rather than where the heart was.
oh well, good luck.
lunch is one me….hahahaha.
LSU board says it’s a false alarm . . . coaches say nothing official yet
al, you see something else?
Chow has had slash and dash running backs at BYU and at USC– you can do that when you have a fullback and a tight end to block.
Chow will run a lot of formations and combinations of players like Al said– he did that in the Utah bowl game this year. He will slots in one set and Hbacks and a TE in another set.
Also, the base West Coast and Pro Set offenses release the TE, H Back, Slots, RB, and FB as receivers, adding even more versatility to the attack.
Congrats to base Bows. Win first game 2-1.
PapaJoe DEE-livers!
Mahalo to he and his lovely wife for stopping briefly on top da Ceded lands bearing yummy treats direct from her very own brick oven kitchen. Just in time to snack on during the Mbb game.
Will be exciting to watch TE’s and FB’s blocking for the RB,
RB’s and FB’s blocking for the Slot receiver,
Will be exciting to see our FB’s throwing the rock.
Ever wonder where would we have been now if they picked Coach Chow instead of Coach Mack?
Kekoa, sorry the visit was so short. We missed our connection with my wife’s friend anyway. Enjoy, but save some for the keiki.:)
So Al,
Wheres a good place to have lunch??? ; )
Men’s BB. Feel it was a disappointing year because of the greater expectations based on Gib’s first year and the big implosion at the end of the regular season. Gib lost couple of games this year b/c of game management mistakes; but he is still young and these are growing pains. To his credit, he doesn’t seem to make the same game management mistakes twice.
Remains to be seen how good a recruiter Gib is; so far he is a great recruiter of talented kids who cannot get into school. Maybe Gib can get them to commit b/c all the other coaches stopped recruiting them knowing they could not get into school. Gets the fans excited and then a let down. Isaac Fotu another one?
Also remains to be seen whether he grows into learning how to relate, treat and nurture players on the team; understand he has a very foul and abusive mouth. Wonder why so many players have left the team? Salter, Coleman, Brumfield, Barnes, etc. in such a short period of time?
But all in all, seeing what shape the program was in before Gib arrived, I think Gib is ahead of schedule but there are some clouds forming on the horizon. Hope it clears up.
Haapy Birthday to the big feller.
stop the music!
stop the music!!!
reports out of san mateo are that fehoko fanaika has not committed to lsu. still no decision.
mattyboy, ahouse…put your smile back in your pocket. hahaha.
Gib gotta go back to Angola. Bring in another Vander. When recruiting state side, please recruit players who will qualify.

Al,
There must be some truth to that rumor. Seems that chances are that he’s leaning toward LSU.
Knock! Knock!

Emma who?

Anybody been to LSU campus? Is it pretty?
Knock! Knock!
Who’s there?
Alaska!
Alaska who?
Alaska my Mom if I can come out
and play in the snow.
Is it pretty?
Some might say that having Tiger Stadium roaring so loud on a Saturday night that it registers on a Richter scale 50 miles away is pretty.
#88 – I don’t know Coach Arnold but I really doubt that he has a “foul and abusive mouth.” He seems like a good guy who is very passionate about his team and the game. On the sidelines he is so intense he seems like he wants to jump into the game. His assts. have to hold him back at times but I like his intensity and passion.
I think players who leave are so used to being the “star” in high school that they have a hard time sitting on the bench. They need time to mature. I don’t think they left because of Coach Arnold.
#88 I agree with Punaluu. With all this about Mac being soft on players you want Gib to relate to treat and nuture? Please!!!
It’s big boy sports. If you aren’t the best in practice, guess what? you don’t play.
If you cannot play within the system, you not going to play.
Josten proves this, when he does what he is supposed to do, he plays and excels. When he doesn’t, he sits. And when our starters sit, we lose.
Wow….even Southern Illinois University website has gametracker.

Happy birthday, Kekaula!
Congrats to the Wahine! 19-0!! Woohoo!!
Also congrats to the BaseBows, especially the pitching staff, on their great play today.
What UH men’s basketball team could use would be a rebounder like that kid Milsap who played for LaTech a few years back, and the second coming of Miah.
If they get these, they’d be tough to beat.
I am still amazed that UH is battling LSU for that very large Polynesian gentleman. I’d like to think we’d come in on top, but I really doubt we can battle that kind of deep pockets they have at that Southern institution.
slow night.
Congratulations Soft B 🙂 ws!

i wonda why Fehoko still trying for decide where to go? Since puttin me on notice he having hard time trying fo decide if he like play fo us, i’ve said goodbye to 3 friends, Ceci, Olivera, Puna. Cici gave me class picture of us in kindergarden 59 years ago. gave me memories. no wonder Dodo was choke choke peeps last night. wonderful lady.
Fehoko could be like dat. winning is a journey. memories takes time.
if Fehoko Fanaika comes Hawaii, waiting will have been worth it, and it is a big big big deal. If he no come, he no come, then the wait was no big deal.
so come on Fehoko Fanaika. Make the wait the big deal.
an give Al his lunch.
Fine Sunday to all!
Huzzah to the SoftBows!
Whoo-hoo!!!

Thanks for the link. Awesome musician!
Three hour difference between there and here. Lost an hour.
The development of the running backs will be fun to follow this season, especially Samson. He has speed few can match.
Bravo BaseBows!

Good morning, wafan! Is it warming up there?

Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.
looks like Hilo gonna shine today.
Morning all. The Sotftball Wahine were again impressive and resilient (and weatherproof, apparently! It’s a shame the bad weather kept so many from witnessing it in person;; it was special. Looking forward to the games today and a very challenging array of opponents next week.
o.o. da clouds stay peekin out in Pepeekeo. 😀

brudda. can can.
Ugh! Some low land snow predicted this week.
Probably just enough for the lolo-ness to come out in drivers with trucks and SUV’s.
Re: big boy sweepstakes. I think it’s great that UH has had such staying power in the face of the seductive wiles of the runner-up for the national championship along with the relentless pressure of twitter / facebook acquaintances that seem more like boosters or pimps rather than friendly and supportive advice-givers. I hope he doesn’t go over to the dark-side.
ST
good article. can’t wait to learn more.
given more time da Chowboys gonna know who fo target for da bigs.
the Legislature and the Governor gotta get more active in making da long term plans for support UH football. nuttin like having da makings for a big time program and get one really really good coach and, at da end of the day, get junk kine Legislative support. Rep. Takai no can do da job all by hisself. And Inouye not gonna live forever. and Akaka bless his heart stay retiring. who we get in govt that are national leaders? guys who can give UH assistance now. use the football to bring national recognition to Hawaii?
i tells you, times like dis make me go NUTZ!
Sayyed . . . eat more fiber for less problems in your end.
wafan, you’re hilarious.
#134. bg,
More than just his speed and quickness, JMHO that Samson has that knack of setting up blocks and can see and hit his running lanes decisively. That’s what he displayed in Spring Ball last year that won him the kickoff and punt returning jobs….before blowing out his knee…and before Scott Harding joined the team.
Although not as explosive in his change-of-direction cuts, kinda reminds me of “Mighty Mouse” Chad Owens. Also the same size and powerful build.
Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂
Love that article too, Beeg Heelo! Can’t wait for more, can’t wait for Spring Ball.
Happy SUNday morning! Howdy, DPK! How’s the field looking for some Wahine SB?
morning
congrats to sball wahines and hardball warriors
gmahoney take a strong windbreaker cause it’s like a hurricane up dea
Thanks, KK, will do!
The young man from NorCal has a very tough decision, true. What seems apparent in the process when one looks into it is that he is weighing the “bling factor” the flash, the material route to a similar end (a pro career) to one that leads with one’s heart, the soul of a man, so to speak. “Take away the clothes of a man and you will find the man” which seems to be what Uh has to offer. There’s no big stadium, locker rooms that need repair, a conference not recognized, but there is the heart of the team and the man who keeps the spirit burning.
That young man will be in the pros under either program if he works hard and puts his tools to use.
The decision really comes down to the path he will take. The heart or the glitz?
He’s a bright young man to keep the question alive and bless him for the decision he is about to make.
