Rise and shout

By Stephen Tsai on August 14, 2012

The Warriors’ sweet dreams were interrupted with the BAM!-BAM!!-BAM! pounding on their doors this morning. It was 5:30 a.m. With physical-training captains at full volume and rage, the Warriors were out of their room, in full training wear, and ready for a morning workout that would make an officer and a gentleman wince. They met outside their dormitory-styled barracks, in two straight lines. But some were sent back to their rooms for failing to wear socks. Others were berated, then […]

What the … ?!?

By Stephen Tsai on August 13, 2012

UH never fails to amaze. There was a coach fired at the team banquet. There was a coach invited to a news conference to announce his own firing. There was the assistant athletic director who told students not to stand and yell during games. There was a contest in which basketballs were given to the first 1,000 fans to leave the arena. This year, there is a chancellor who will be paid a year’s salary not to be a chancellor. […]

Donovan cleared, then reassigned

By Stephen Tsai on August 12, 2012

As expected, Jim Donovan was cleared of any wrongdoing in the Stevie Wonder concert incident. But in a surprise, Donovan will be returning to UH tomorrow in a marketing capacity under chancellor Tom Apple’s office. After the terms of his AD contract expire in March, he will be recommended for another three years at the new position. Here’s the link: Donovan. * * * * * Training camp moves from Manoa to Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam today. It wasn’t an […]

Clobberin' time

By Stephen Tsai on August 11, 2012

The Warriors will conduct their first scrimmage of training camp this morning. The first snap will be at about 10 a.m. It will be the civilian public’s last chance to watch training camp. Tomorrow, training camp moves to Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. The practices on base will be open to military personnel.

Light before the live fire

By Stephen Tsai on August 10, 2012

The Warriors will have a relatively lighter practice today, easing on the contact ahead of tomorrow’s first scrimmage of training camp. Head coach Norm Chow said tomorrow’s scrimmage will begin at 10 a.m. The scrimmage will test the Warriors in game-like conditions as well as set the roster for the next  phase of training camp. The Warriors move to Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam on Sunday. Wide receiver Chris Gant, who might miss two weeks because of an ankle injury, might […]

Sampson to miss 2012 season

By Stephen Tsai on August 9, 2012

In an emotional meeting last night, receiver Allen Sampson was told he will miss the 2012 season because he has not healed from a knee injury suffered 10 months ago. Sampson suffered a torn ACL in his right knee in a victory over New Mexico State in October 2011. He then underwent season-ending surgery. He was held out of contact drills during spring training. Sampson had attempted to practice this training camp, but he still experienced problems with his knee. […]

Wednesday updates

By Stephen Tsai on August 8, 2012

Here’s the Warrior Beat update: • Cornerback Ronald Fields has returned to California to work on the things he needs to work on to transfer to UH. The fall semester begins Aug. 20. If he’s not ready at that time, then he will grayshirt and join the Warriors in January. He has a redshirt year to burn. • Offensive lineman Mike Milovale is expected to be cleared fairly soon. He’s completed the work for an associate degree, the main requirement […]

Ostrowski, Falemalu picked as captains

By Stephen Tsai on August 7, 2012

The UH basketball team had practiced for nearly two months and played several games when point guard Miah Ostrowski rejoined following the conclusion of the 2011 football season. He was re-introduced as the team’s leader . . . and captain. Ostrowski’s leadership in football isn’t as visible. He is not the “point” of the offense. His position, inside receiver, has been downsized in the transition from the four-wide offense to the pro-set attack. But Otrowski demonstrates a work ethic that […]
