Donovan cleared, then reassigned

As expected, Jim Donovan was cleared of any wrongdoing in the Stevie Wonder concert incident.

But in a surprise, Donovan will be returning to UH tomorrow in a marketing capacity under chancellor Tom Apple’s office. After the terms of his AD contract expire in March, he will be recommended for another three years at the new position.

Here’s the link: Donovan.

Training camp moves from Manoa to Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam today.

It wasn’t an easy move. The Warriors had to move everything from equipment to the three portable video towers, which aren’t so portable. They had to be loaded onto flat-bed semis. At least they found Warrior-friendly movers:

Offensive guard Chauncy Winchester-Makainai had the biggest block of the scrimmage, flattening a safety. (We’ll avoid naming the victim.)

As a fourth-year junior, Winchester-Makainai has the most continuous tenure of the offensive linemen.

“I’m the old fut,” he said.

OK, here’s your chicken-skin moment.

This past week, Chow brought in some members of the UH Marching Band to teach his team, “Co-Ed,” which is UH’s fight song. Band didn’t leave until the players got the song right.

At the end of the scrimmage, the players gathered in a circle, then sang “Co-Ed.”

The players are loving the new high-top shoes:

What’s more, all players are required to tape their ankles, even for practices. It used to be optional.

Let’s go USA! Defense is needed to win in basketball. Up by only 1 at halftime

  3. protector August 12, 2012 4:39 am

Morning everybody! Didn’t get to comment on the last blog re: the scrimmage. I saw encouraging plays on both sides. At times there was solid blocking while at others, great penetration by the D. Saw some nice grabs and there was a great diving interception by a DB in or near the end-zone. Saw a nice over-the-head one-handed catch that turned nothing into something and a reception that dropped in over the head of the defender in large part due to the adjustment made by an akamai receiver.

  4. protector August 12, 2012 4:46 am

For all those that are so focused on the Vegas spreads and odds, please bear this in mind: a strong showing against the Trojans or even better yet..an outright win against USC in their “house” would invalidate all pre-set spreads and odds!! Vegas oddsmakers will be scrambling to update them.

  5. SAWARRIOR August 12, 2012 4:47 am

Is chow that tall, or is Benny that short?

  6. protector August 12, 2012 4:49 am

SAWARRIOR-I was thinking the exact same thing, lol.

  7. Stephen Tsai August 12, 2012 4:50 am

    Chow is about 6-2.

Not sure how tall Benny is.

  8. Stephen Tsai August 12, 2012 4:50 am

I covered Agbayani when he was a slotback/returner for Saint Louis School.

Agbayani succeeded Micah Matsuzaki, who played for Chow at BYU.

Overall, I liked the running of Lister and Lakalaka. Lots of pop. Offensive line, both l’s and 2’s looked good. Secondary looks really improved (quicker and aggressive), or the passing game needs more work. No completed passes to a tight end. Something to work on?

  16. Bugaz August 12, 2012 5:10 am

ST you’re welcome and thanks for the times. I’ll be heading out to the morning practices.

  17. Padron August 12, 2012 5:12 am

Wow! Thanks ST! I’m so impressed with the extent that Coach Chow goes to with his attention to details! Having the band come in to reach the team the school fight song! That’s team building inside and out! Good job accolades to Chauncy for his block flattening out the safety! Thank God for “old futs”!

  37. Shoko August 12, 2012 5:56 am

A Boise State fan made this comment regarding this upcoming season.

“Expectations for this team are unrealistically high. With the QB position unsettled, I keep hoping that this season doesn’t turn out like 2007, a year that BSU went 10-3.”

Sort of funny comment, in my opinion. Seems like Bronco fans are spoiled when they consider a 10-3 season as a underachieving.

Chow has the right idea: Start a movement from within and let it resonate into a tradition. Everyone attending practice was caught off guard when the team began to sing, “Co Ed.” A resounding applause came from the crowd after the team was done. I just know if the team keeps this up the entire stadium will be singing “Co Ed” in unison, loud n proud.

The band needs to come up with more cheers for everyone to follow. The students themselves need to be creative and inventive and come up with cheers or movements that the entire crowd can emulate. The cheerleaders need to collaborate with the band and students more. The Rainbow Dancers need to move out from their endzone dead spot confines and perform for the entire stadium more. Do quick routines in the middle of the field during time outs.

I might be busy teaching those youngsters some of my dazzling footwork and old school moves. If so, you can catch up with me later for lunch at the Familia Mexican Restaurant after practice. It’s located at the Par 3 Golf Course on Hickam called, The 10th Puka.

    Go Warriors!

  54. HEINEKEN August 12, 2012 7:16 am

    Hey ST:

Were you at the Aiea-Kaimuki game friday night?

  55. Wes'side Warrior August 12, 2012 7:26 am

    Howzit, everyone!

    Happy belated birthday, Helen graves!

Love how Coach Chow got the band involved with the boyz. Good start on recognizing supporting entities. A-Joe is right, this movement needs to continue, so that everyone is involved and feels that “ownership”. That’s how to grow this buggah!

I also like the extra attention to injury (prevention) details. I only wore hi-tops while playing basketball, though. Wondering how the players feel with those on, while making cutbacks, etc. Maybe it gives a sense of greater ankle protection, to let loose and turn on that dime when necessary. Might also help from injuries when getting “rolled-up” on by linemen. We’ll see. Just want to see us in the best shape possible come game day!

    Go, Warriors!!!

  56. Wes'side Warrior August 12, 2012 7:28 am

Dang it! (I mean, “Oops!”) I did it again!

Combined three separate topics into one blog post. Gotta remember to spread them out, so they each get their own post number. Hahaha!

  57. kev-1 August 12, 2012 7:46 am

Why is Dunnache the only one getting punting time? I would imagine that against an opponent like USC, you might want to have a punter back there with as much practice at it as possible, especially if that guy is not really a punter.

I am starting to wonder if Alex is going to get a pass on the suspension.

  58. tommui August 12, 2012 7:52 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

Thanks for the updates on Saturday’s scrim.

When did “Co-Ed” become UH’s fight song?

  59. Da Punchbowl Kid August 12, 2012 7:53 am

    Good Morning Gangeez!

Warriors singin’ da fight song was one of the highlights of yesterday’s scrimmage for us fans. Loud cheering and clapping from everybody on the hill. Loved the “connection” it fostered with the Warriors! Some serious chikken skin Chow time!

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Happy Belated Birthday to Helen Graves!

    Is it Saturday yet?!!!

    Tom –

If it wasn’t already our fight song, after yesterday it will be!

  62. gigi-hawaii August 12, 2012 7:55 am

    mahalo for the stats, ST.

Those shoes look really nice. Glad to hear Chow is making the players tape their ankles. A sprain or fracture could prove to be devastating.

  63. Da Punchbowl Kid August 12, 2012 7:56 am

Happy Birthday Helen Graves! David looked great out there yesterday – what an athlete!

  64. jm2375 August 12, 2012 7:57 am

A little history on da fight song:

The melody to the “Fight Song comes from a march entitled “Co-Ed” by J.S. Zamecnik, originally published in 1914 with the cover declaration: “Respectfully Dedicated to the College Girls.” The original lyrics, by J.R. Shannon, began: “Here‘s to the girl in college / And to her charming ways; / Here‘s to the girl of knowledge, / Pride of our student days.”

No one can recall when the lyrics to the UHM version of the song were composed, but they may very well date back before 1972, the year of the beginning of UHM‘s women‘s athletics program.

  68. protector August 12, 2012 8:11 am

    ST,

In reference to kev-1’s inquiry about suspensions (#58), and with suspensions being 4 weeks, is there any realistic chance of Shutter and Dunnachie being activated for the game against the Trojans? Or do the suspensions start from the first game and go on from there, meaning they will miss at least 3 (if not 4) games?

  69. el burro sabio August 12, 2012 8:13 am

    kev-1,

I’m just guessing on this. Alex isn’t getting a pass, but Coach does not want to show who is going to punt so USC has to prepare for different possibilities.

  70. BigHiloFan2 August 12, 2012 8:18 am

I’m guessing to. Alex gonna get wat Alex gonna get. Coach Chow is gonna make da

    sneak attack.

brudda Mike gonna hafta cut his hair again, make new numbaz 😆

  74. gigi-hawaii August 12, 2012 8:32 am

I am surprised that Chow is 6’2″ tall. I thought he was much shorter. Well, next to him, I am a midget. Lol.

  75. kev-1 August 12, 2012 8:34 am

I don’t think USC is going to be surprised if there is no punter. I’m sure they know about the suspensions. If you are going with another punter, you practice him. Especially in “live” situations like the scrimmage. Unless, of course Chow plans on not even using a punter. It is a lot to ask of a non-punter to go back there and punt during a game, especially against an opponent like USC.

I’m not saying he’s giving Alex a pass on his punishment, I’m just wondering.

  76. gigi-hawaii August 12, 2012 8:34 am

Yeah, I, too, wonder why Dunnachie was the sole punter in yesterday’s scrimmage. Is he going to play in the USC game?

  77. Kekoa August 12, 2012 8:35 am

Good Morning Big Hilo Man Fan!

Your casino birdee tweets UH +20? Hmmm…

The calculatory possibility of the Warriors administering the okoloe whoopin’ of the year is starting to look very good!

  78. wafan August 12, 2012 8:54 am

    Good morning, again!

  79. wafan August 12, 2012 8:54 am

Alex will be benched . . . between punts.

  80. Kekoa August 12, 2012 9:00 am

wafan ~ Without a cushion, would that border ‘cruel & unusual’ punishment?

Btw – Did you still want to go to practice at Hickam?

  81. Shoko August 12, 2012 9:10 am

There’s always a chance that Chow could reinstate Alex and even Shutter prior to the fourth game of the season. I think Chow is basically leaving it up to both of them to prove themselves. If they make breakout the knee pads and make super nice-nice, the suspensions could be lifted for good behavior. I’ve heard of players that got suspended the entire season then get reinstated midway through the season after making amends.

  82. RedZone August 12, 2012 9:10 am

It is best to have your returners face your best punter in practice.

  83. Stephen Tsai August 12, 2012 9:12 am

    Heineken:

    Nope.

  84. Ipu Man August 12, 2012 9:15 am

    …on another topic:

Dolphins receiver Chad Johnson was arrested Saturday on a domestic violence charge, accused of head-butting his newlywed wife…

  85. Stephen Tsai August 12, 2012 9:18 am

    Re: Punting.

The purpose of the punting segments was about alignments and assignments.

Dunnachie, obviously, gives them the best look. But, yes, he will be suspended for some games. Not sure how many. It depends on his behavior.

Also, remember this was only the end of the first full week of training camp. There’s three weeks before the opener. The scrimmage was meant to give the players a feel for game-like situations; it wasn’t meant as public unveiling of this year’s product.

  86. Stephen Tsai August 12, 2012 9:18 am

By the way, Helen is Graves’ grandmother.

  87. Stephen Tsai August 12, 2012 9:21 am

I remember Mike Wilton made all of his volleyball players learn the lyrics to Hawaii Pono‘i.

It was fun to see Costas Theocharidis, Dejan Miladinovic and Eyal Zimet sing it.

  88. will August 12, 2012 9:22 am

My guess is in punting situations UH will line up in wildcat then Iosefa will drop back and punt. Iosefa is best athlete on the team can throw 50 yards on the run, drop kick straight thru uprights from 30 and punt 40 to 50 yards he is a weapon.

  89. el burro sabio August 12, 2012 9:26 am

If Harding punts, it creates one kind of problem for the defense. If Iosefa punts, it creates more and different problems for the defense. Why show everything now, make them prepare for more than one scenario.

  90. Dan-O August 12, 2012 9:27 am

No punter? No punt…works in video games.

  91. papajoe2 August 12, 2012 9:30 am

Mr. Tsai – Thank you much for the all the updates & details from the scrimmage yesterday. I have a question for you:

After viewing the scrimmage, I think it s 94 plays you reported….I’m wondering, is the team as a whole further ahead of what we saw during Spring.?

Bugaz — thanks for the MWR link.

Will the practices be on the field with the oval track near the bowling alley? Is the bowling alley still there?

  99. SteveM August 12, 2012 11:15 am

Looking at it, it’s so 😎 that I’ll accept a few more high school-mid 20’s entry photos for this show. Until I send out the email notification.

    Did I tell you this show is 😎 😎 😎 ?

  100. Bugaz August 12, 2012 11:17 am

Bowling alley is in sub base. No field their. I think it’s the one with oval track next to fire station on ship yard side. They gotta line the field though. Should be done by now

  101. SteveM August 12, 2012 11:31 am

Bugaz — I haven’t been on the HNL airport end of Hickam for a couple years– Kuntz avenue(?). There was a bowling alley there a few years ago.

Hmmm…so where is the practice going to be?

  102. Bugaz August 12, 2012 11:35 am

Practice is going to be on the Pearl Harbor side right!?

  103. Bugaz August 12, 2012 11:38 am

I thought the big soccer field on PH ship yard side. Oh well hopefully someone brighter than I will notify us of where practice will be

Are these the correct “Co-Ed” lyrics? I want to make sure that my family knows it for all the mainland games.

    Here‘s to our dear Hawaiʻi,

Here‘s to our Green and White.

    Here‘s to our Alma Mater;

Here‘s to the team with fight.

    Rah! Rah! Rah!

    Here‘s to old warriors calling,

    Here‘s to old battles won.

    Here‘s to Hawaiʻi‘s victory,

    Here‘s to each valiant one.

  105. madeinhawaii August 12, 2012 12:03 pm

They should change the “old” in the Co-Ed lyrics to “our”…. easier to get your tongue around and wouldn’t change the meaning much… if at all.

  106. Think2much August 12, 2012 12:09 pm

Did the practice scrimmage on special teams? Can they punt under pressure, especially since Dunnachie won’t be available? Can they protect on PATs? Just recalling last year’s debacles for a team that had high expectations.

  107. JLoando August 12, 2012 12:18 pm

What about defense stats? any sacks?

  108. Inyoface August 12, 2012 12:50 pm

So if they’re practicing for a week at PH, where they going practice the week after that? Aloha Stadium?

  109. madeinhawaii August 12, 2012 12:52 pm

How many more hours of practice are left before game day?

  110. manoa#1 August 12, 2012 1:22 pm

inyoface….. i heard they practice at aloha stadium on friday.

  111. kawika49 August 12, 2012 1:40 pm

I don’t know about the rest of you; but, I’m saving up for the Olumpics in Brazil.

  112. Stiri locale August 12, 2012 1:46 pm

Pretty nice post. I just stumbled upon your blog and wanted to mention that I’ve really loved browsing your weblog posts. After all I will be subscribing to your feed and I hope you write again very soon!

  113. 3-Prong August 12, 2012 1:53 pm

    Donavan survives.

  114. 3-Prong August 12, 2012 1:54 pm

    Sheriff?

  115. Bugaz August 12, 2012 1:54 pm

K I’m thinking practice is at Quick Field on Pearl…right?

  116. 3-Prong August 12, 2012 1:57 pm

    Donovan, new position?

  117. mo808 August 12, 2012 2:07 pm

    Huh? Donovan survives? New position?

  118. stink_natto August 12, 2012 2:08 pm

Practice at Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam will be on the Hickam side of the base. There is a bowling alley along Kuntz Ave, the football field is just behind (south) of it. When driving along Kuntz, look for the lights for the baseball field 4-plex which is across the street from the football field. This is the same field the Pro Bowl used last year for practice.

  119. Bugaz August 12, 2012 2:10 pm

Ok thanks! Going sleep early so tomorrow comes faster

  120. wafan August 12, 2012 2:21 pm

    Huzzah for JD!

Looks like he will be much more responsible for communications and marketing (among other things). Maybe there is hope to increase community visibility!

    Whooo-hoo!!!

  121. koakane August 12, 2012 2:26 pm

good news JD returns to his job… congrats

  122. SteveM August 12, 2012 2:29 pm

    Good news for JD!

I hope he is happy with it. I have much aloha for the man who tried to make things better in the lower campus.

  123. Da Punchbowl kid August 12, 2012 2:32 pm

Good for JD! Glad things worked out.

  124. WarriorNY August 12, 2012 2:34 pm

Great news about JD. Everyone makes mistakes and I’m so happy hes got a shot to redeem himself from the Wonder fiasco…

    GL JD. GL Warriors!

  125. RedZone August 12, 2012 2:40 pm

I am confused here. If Donovan did nothing wrong why isn’t he the AD? Why did they create a new position for him?

  126. koakane August 12, 2012 2:41 pm

ok JD to function in another role but still with UH

    pardon good afternoon 808 country

  127. mo808 August 12, 2012 2:43 pm

Great news for an all around Great Guy! JD, I know you’ll do wonders in communicatiions & marketing for UH! I hope you can get some of the students to think up some creative slogans and designs for UH Warrior Football shirts!

  128. mo808 August 12, 2012 2:44 pm

I think it’s a fair question to ask about the different position. I guess we have to wait for the book (er report) to come out to explain that.

  129. koakane August 12, 2012 2:45 pm

people people lets keep this positive. JD is back welcome the warrior home. speculate latter and enjoy the moment

  130. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 12, 2012 2:47 pm

cleared of all charges but not allowed back to his original position. ok…

  131. Kekoa August 12, 2012 2:48 pm

Folks going to the UH football practice sessions at Hickam can come in on the Elliot Street entrance from off of Nimitz Hwy, just past HNL Airport (by the old Aloha Airlines Cargo terminal). Follow Elliot street as it leads you right to the gate.

Be prepared to present your military ID card to the Guard at the gate. You will be required to sign-in if you don’t have the valid military registration decal on your vehicle. For that, you will need your Driver’s license, registration and current car insurance papers…(oh and your note from mom).

After entering the gate, you are on Kuntz Ave. Go to the 1st 4-way intersection and make a left turn and continue driving until you see the parking lot near the field.

If you are coming in from the Main Hickam Gate…good luck! It’s a little complicated to get back there where the field is at. Stop at the visitors center at the gate and get directions. I don’t want to be responsible for anyone being dragged off to GITMO!

  132. Stephen Tsai August 12, 2012 2:49 pm

It appears to be a way to burn off the remainder of his contract.

I guess this means this whole investigation wasn’t really about the concert.

  133. Stephen Tsai August 12, 2012 2:51 pm

Oh, wait, he’s being recommended for a two-year extension in that new job.

    I want his lawyer.

  134. HiFlyer August 12, 2012 2:52 pm

Donovan is clear but the investigation continues into the lost money.

  135. tommui August 12, 2012 2:53 pm

Glad to hear the news about JD – one terrific guy with a really terrific wife!

  136. Kekoa August 12, 2012 2:53 pm

Welcome back JD…we miss your face! Now let’s get this party started!

  137. SteveM August 12, 2012 2:55 pm

stink_natto — thank you for the info and welcome to the blog!

Bowling alley next to the field sounds good. Hope it’s open… that’ll take care of spectator logistics. 🙂

  138. Stephen Tsai August 12, 2012 3:00 pm

Whoops. Make that three year extension.

  139. HiFlyer August 12, 2012 3:06 pm

You can use this map to see where the field on Hickam is at, just, zoom in on the Hickam AFB area and look below Kuntz Ave.

  140. madeinhawaii August 12, 2012 3:16 pm

Maybe they received a lot of phone calls and emails in support of JD…

  141. Haleakala August 12, 2012 3:20 pm

I’m glad to hear about JD. I know he has a good heart. This marketing position can utilize his experience as the former promoter of the Hawaii Bowl.

  142. Rich2176 August 12, 2012 3:20 pm

CONGRATS to JD on being cleared!! Less headaches for him now. The new position will certainly utilize all of his stregths not just for the athletic department, but the entire campus. Win-Win for everyone.

  143. Bleed Green and White August 12, 2012 3:37 pm

I got three words for you, ONLY IN HAWAII!

Donovan is so called “cleared” of any wrong doing by an investigation commissioned by UH, but not given his AD job back. However, the school creates a new position for him, complete with a contract extension. Really?

Read between the lines people. Read between the lines.

Is anybody shocked by any of this? I know I am. At the outcome that is, not at the action of the school. Go figure.

  144. oldie August 12, 2012 3:37 pm

Happy for JD! Hope his new position has less stress than the AD one.

  145. Amazing Deals August 12, 2012 3:48 pm

I used to be suggested this web site by my cousin. I am no longer certain whether or not this publish is written via him as nobody else realize such distinctive about my difficulty. You are wonderful! Thanks!

  146. wowlaulau August 12, 2012 3:57 pm

#155, I did read between the lines but all I saw was a shade of gray. Thought something was wrong so I checked my other computer … the same gray..

Relax, people that read this blog are smart enough to figure out things for themselves. They are just glad that JD landed back on his feet.

  147. Ipu Man August 12, 2012 4:14 pm

    Welcome back Jim Donovan.

  148. Slugger August 12, 2012 4:19 pm

Good to hear that JD has been cleared of the concert incident.

Will have to catch up on reading the blog to find out what happened at the scrimmage.

I had a good time on my vacay talking football with 2 USC fans. They love coming to HI to the away games here.

    Happy belated birthday, Helen!

    Laters…

  149. Ha! August 12, 2012 4:29 pm

Here we are trying to support a program and institution, who’s internal foundation quietly dangles precariously on shaky grounds.

The state system allows certain individuals to play, “structural engineer.” They can’t just remove pillars, braces, struts and shoring but they’re allowed to move them elsewhere (against logic) or leave them unattended to quietly rot away. All in the name of personal esthetics.

Someday this restructured foundation will be tested. Hopefully, JD’s new office is close to a fire door exit.

  150. Rich2176 August 12, 2012 4:53 pm

A little off topic – Congrats to all of the participants representing the USA in the Olympics and especially to the winners. BUT, will anyone miss seeing Bob Pompous 4 hours a night for over two weeks in a row????? I certainly won’t.

  151. mo808 August 12, 2012 4:56 pm

Well then, they made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. I’m happy he’s back he’s an asset to the school! Go JD!!! Go Warriors!!!

  152. tommui August 12, 2012 5:01 pm

Well, Chris Tanaka in the newscast this evening, says that Sheriff will return to his job at UH tomorrow.

  153. HiFlyer August 12, 2012 5:07 pm

tom – caught that too, glad to see that both Donovan and Sheriff will be back.

  154. BigHiloFan2 August 12, 2012 5:13 pm

    Donovan.

I agree with Rich 21765. win win for everyone. good luck in our new job, JD. now get da wife back on da WB and give us da inside scoops.

anyway, your talents gonna be much better appreciated in marketing UH. lets go market some whup @$$ for USC and BYU and Washington next year. and no more scheduling some DIVA school. das shame shame shame. and unacceptable soldier.

  155. d1shima August 12, 2012 5:28 pm

    Uhhh…er, hmmmm….

    Welcome Back Jim Donovan.

  156. gigi-hawaii August 12, 2012 5:40 pm

JD: glad you’ve been cleared of any wrongdoing and that we will be seeing you back on campus. Wishing you all the best.

  157. oldtimer808 August 12, 2012 6:22 pm

Why do some people always have to paraphrase things with “only in Hawaii”. Does it mean that you are disgruntled about things Hawaii? Does it mean that we are beneath the dignity of other states? I dunno I see other states having huge problems…I guess we can say only in Arizona, etc. Welcome back JD.

  158. madeinhawaii August 12, 2012 6:26 pm

  162. A-joe August 12, 2012 7:13 pm

It’s just good to hear JD and Sheriff back in action.

Rich2176- Good to see you roaming these halls once again. =)

  163. A-joe August 12, 2012 7:29 pm

SteveM- Some of those old Tsaiko photos are tough to guess! But it reminded me of a question Andy Bumatai posed about David Carradines, “Kung Fu” show:

How does a little haole boy grow up to one day be an old Chinese man?

  164. cocobean August 12, 2012 7:36 pm

    Glad for JD.

There’s some ?s left unanswed or asked.

The biggest being who’s the next AD going to be?

Is it going to be Apple’s call or someone else’s. Hope the UH admin and Downtown Athletic Club bigwigs stay out of this one.

  165. Huh? August 12, 2012 7:42 pm

  166. SteveM August 12, 2012 7:43 pm

    A-joe — the boy was hapa. 🙂

Yup, there are some tough ones–I admit I would struggle with a dozen of them.

BTW–the key to #13 is to figure who has men in black and loves to tease me… 😉

  167. Bugaz August 12, 2012 8:07 pm

Did Ronald Fields take care of his business in order to return and play this season?

  168. papajoe2 August 12, 2012 8:26 pm

Welcome back Mr. Donovan and Mr. Sheriff.

So……… who is the guilty party and how much did we spend to find out such? Are the guilty people going to lose their job or be suspended?

  169. Bleed Green and White August 12, 2012 8:36 pm

Maybe it’s me, but it seems things over at UH have an ugly smell to it. In fact, to be honest, it stinks!

I was really hoping the sometimes nasty, ugly, politics we have to live with on a daily basis, would not show it’s sickening face in the world of athletics. Alas, it has!

    So sad!

Manoa campus now has an acting AD, and man paid the AD’s salary that used to be the AD but is no longer the AD. Instead, he sits in a position that was made up. I mean pulled out of thin air and created just for him. Oh, and it was done so without your standard posting or advertising publicly for the job.

Wondering out loud here, the egg on the faces of the UH president, chancellor and VP acting as AD, is it easy over, scrambled or sunny side up?

Don’t even get me started on the chancellor position. If I remember correctly, the school is still paying someone a chancellor’s salary to not be the chancellor, a head football coach to not be the head football coach, and now an AD to not be the AD.

Fair question…..Are any of you concerned about leadership at the University of Hawaii?

Fair question…..Now that the investigation is complete, does anybody know where the money is? $200,000, is the school getting it back?

The state of things comes across as pathetic. At least embarrassing.

  170. kev-1 August 12, 2012 8:37 pm

????????????? Who runs the finances at UH? I am happy Donovan is cleared of wrong doing, but this makes no sense. The school gets ripped off for what, $200K or $250K, so they put JD on paid leave, while also paying an interim in RF (although he may be just getting his same pay from before anyway), then return JD to work to finish out his contract then renew him to a new, created position for 200-300K or something for 3 years. All of this and they will still need to replace the AD, as RF has said he doesn’t want it permanently. So if you are doing the math, in the end, UH is out the $250 for the concert PLUS Donovan’s next deal for let’s say $250, PLUS the cost of a new AD? Did we just burn $500K before spending on a new salary for an incoming AD?

I’m confused. Btw . . . I apologize if my numbers are wrong, but I’m just guesstimating.

  171. kev-1 August 12, 2012 8:38 pm

Bleed . . . I am apparently with you on this one.

  172. kruzen August 12, 2012 8:38 pm

    178.

    +1

  173. kev-1 August 12, 2012 8:41 pm

This would have gone over a little less like a blunder if UH just said JD is clear of wrong doing and returning to work. Then made any changes to his position once his contract expired.

Unless, of course, they have no intention on offerring JD this new marketing position once his current deal runs out. Hmmmmm . . .

  174. kev-1 August 12, 2012 8:47 pm

Wow! Dolphins cut Chad Johnson. While I don’t advocate domestic violence in the least, based on what I have seen of his wife on that Basketball Wives show, she looks like she could test a man. I guess Chad Johnson failed the test. Seems a bit out of character for him.

  175. BigHiloFan2 August 12, 2012 8:51 pm

    ppj2

don’t know, ain’t gonna tell, and nope. 😆

177 cocobean. he’s already in da job. he is working great with Chow. Rockne wants to make the calls all the way around, and MRC Greenwood’s gonna back him up.

that conclusion is supported by da writing all over the wall.

  176. BigHiloFan2 August 12, 2012 8:53 pm

for me, Rockne has “it” no scared. take charge right away. never burn our friend.

    recognizes the good in JD>

I say hoorah for Rockne and Chow.

    and I also say

    beat da poop outta USC.

    Go Warriors!

  177. kev-1 August 12, 2012 8:55 pm

I also like Rockne in the spot if he decides to stay on permanent.

  178. manoa#1 August 12, 2012 8:58 pm

call a duck a duck. some friend of Chad should tell Ocho, get a divorce. she is too toxic for you. if she tests you to the point you head butted her, and you lost your job, then you gotta cut your losses. now is the time to cut your losses admit you made a mistake. pau is pau. .

just telling it like it is.

    …I….I….

    I think i’m gonna faint.

  182. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 12, 2012 10:01 pm

    Quote from HNN:

“Sources said UH officials had lost faith in Donovan as the leader of the athletic department but “wanted to find something for him.” Officials considered several scenarios before deciding on the one announced Sunday, sources said. One option was buying out Donovan’s contract and having him leave UH, while another was allowing him to return as a short time as athletic director to help with a transition to a new AD as a national search was launched for his successor, sources said.”

    http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/19259827/donovan-loses-uh-ad-job-but-remains-on-payroll-after-failed-concert

  183. HiFlyer August 12, 2012 10:02 pm

BHF2 – I heard the same news from a very, very reliable person.

  184. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 12, 2012 10:03 pm

So the vote of no confidence was taken and this was the end result. It could have been much worse for JD. At least JD will be recommended for a new position.

It also sounds like UH might be looking for a permanent AD. Maybe someone from the PAC12 Conference offices.

  185. kev-1 August 12, 2012 10:34 pm

I think Apple has big visions for UH athletics, especially conference-wise. I also think Rockne does as well. But if they are launching a national search for a new AD, that means Rockne doesn’t want it. I can see them looking for a guy with a Pac12 background for the connections in future realignment scenarios.

  186. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 12, 2012 10:54 pm

    kev-1,

I think it has to be a associate commissioner from the PAC12 itself. That person should have worked both on conference expansion but also scheduling PAC12 sports, worked with administrators from PAC12 schools on a daily basis etc.

Herman had all those Olympic and Fiesta Bowl ties but how were his ties/work with PAC12 Big West WCC etc? Someone that has been focused on west coast sports would be key imo.

  187. al August 12, 2012 11:06 pm

    moving on…jim donovan!

very glad to hear that a truly good guy was not falsely accused.

it is a consolation prize that he will be relocated, probably due to some other situations better left untold. nethertheless a moral(e) victory of sorts for the donovan ohana.
