No stopping Sampson

By Stephen Tsai on August 22, 2012

Let’s suppose you’re going to have ACL surgery in another week. I’m sure most of us would be limping along, with that pained expression one gets thinking about the Wonder Gate mess. But not receiver Allen Sampson, who is awaiting his mother’s arrival from Florida before undergoing what should be season-ending knee surgery. Sampson is still participating in drills, in full uniform. Yes, he is not at full speed (although his average speed is your fastest speed). And, yes, he […]

Slots winner

By Stephen Tsai on August 21, 2012

Almost lost in the preseason shuffle is the steady play of slotback Corey Paclebar, who is on track to earning a spot on the 64-player travel roster to USC. The tentative plan is to take seven receivers. Chris Gant, Billy Ray Stutzmann and Trevor Davis are the single-side receivers; Scott Harding and Justin Clapp are the strong-side receivers; and Miah Ostrowski and Paclebar are the slots. David Graves in his own category as swing player; he can be used at […]

UCLA DE transferring to UH

By Stephen Tsai on August 20, 2012

Iuta Tepa, who played three seasons at UCLA, told the Warrior Beat he is transferring to UH. Tepa said he will arrive in Honolulu sometime tomorrow. Tepa played DE at UCLA, but said he will compete at linebacker for UH. He said he is a little under 6-3 and weighs about 255. Tepa made an oral commitment to UH in October 2008, but then signed with UCLA, where Norm Chow was the offensive coordinator. Chow, of course, is now UH’s […]

Sunday ramblings

By Stephen Tsai on August 19, 2012

Training camp is over. School starts tomorrow, along with single practices. And there’s less than two weeks before the season opener . . . • The Warriors’ plans are set on “forward.”  About 10 days ago, Chris Gant, who was practicing as the strong-side receiver, suffered an ankle injury. He was supposed to be out up to three weeks. But Gant made it back in three days. When Billy Ray Stutzmann and Trevor Davis suffered nagging leg injuries, Gant was […]

Schroeder, Hall earn scholarships

By Stephen Tsai on August 18, 2012

Quarterback Sean Schroeder and tight end Ryan Hall have been placed on scholarship, head coach Norm Chow confirmed. Schroeder and Hall are both Duke graduates who transferred to UH this summer. Schroeder is the Warriors’ No. 1 quarterback. Hall is the top F, which is a hybrid tight end and H-back. * * * * * The Warriors had a walk-through at Aloha Stadium, an excursion that included the Warrior Walk (from the parking lot to the box office). They […]

DL out for the season

By Stephen Tsai on August 17, 2012

Defensive lineman Calen Friel will miss the 2012 season after suffering a fractured fibula during Thursday’s practice. Friel is a second-year freshman from Kailua High. He was in contention for a spot in the defensive-line rotation. * * * * * * The Warriors are scheduled to practice at Aloha Stadium this afternoon — a session that will include the new Warrior Walk and where the coaches will be positioned during games. Look for Tommy Lee, Keith Uperesa, Tony Tuioti […]

Why not Chow?

By Stephen Tsai on August 16, 2012

Of course, Rockne Freitas would continue to do a good job if he remained as UH’s athletic director. And Keith Amemiya  would be a good choice, too. He’s sharp, has ties everywhere, knows how to make money and, more importantly, knows the right way to spend money. But if either decides not to pursue the job, there’s somebody UH should pursue: head coach Norm Chow. Chow is smart (he has a doctorate), with connections locally and nationally in sports and […]

Warriors visit the past

By Stephen Tsai on August 15, 2012

Head coach Norm Chow canceled this afternoon’s practice and instead took the Warriors to USS Arizona Memorial: * * * * * There is a UH person who is as observant as he is cynical who noted yesterday: The offensive line is playing very well. Indeed, the line is much better than it was in the spring, when it was down to seven healthy available linemen while adjusting to the techniques and requirements of the newly implemented pro-set offense. But […]
