Schroeder is No. 1; Graves moves to receiver

By Stephen Tsai on August 6, 2012

Sean Schroeder was named the Warriors’ No. 1 quarterback today. Schroeder met two of  coach Norm Chow’s requirements: 1) Command of the pro-set offense, and 2) Command of the huddle. Schroeder also was the most productive of the quarterbacks in scrimmage-like drills. Schroeder, who earned a bachelor’s degree in three years at Duke, played in a similar offense with the Blue Devils. He is not on scholarship … at the moment. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining. David Graves, […]

Club med

By Stephen Tsai on August 5, 2012

Here’s the Warriors’ medical team: Team physician — Dr. Gale Prentiss Orthopedic surgeon — Dr. Mark Santi Orthopedic surgeon — Dr. Elizabeth Ignacio Head athletic trainer — Eric Okasaki Football trainer — Brian Wong Notes: The Warriors will only have a nurse on the sidelines for home games. … The hydration specialist has left UH. * * * * * It is interesting that Jim Donovan, who is supposed to be on indefinite paid leave, is no longer listed in […]

Doing the write thing

By Stephen Tsai on August 4, 2012

The late and great John Heckathorn used to give his freshman students this assignment: Write. For 30 minutes straight, just write. Don’t worry about grammar or continuity or syntax. Just write. Later, the text would be cut and pasted (literally, in the typewriter age), rewritten, edited and then rewritten again. It appears that method has been applied to the seemingly madness of the Warriors’ practices. At a rat-a-tat pace, the Warriors often can get off three plays in a minute, […]

Dunnachie suspended after no-contest plea

By Stephen Tsai on August 3, 2012

Punter Alex Dunnachie has been suspended for an indefinite number of games after pleading no contest to a DUI charge in District Court this morning. But Dunnachie, who was held out of yesterday’s practice, will be allowed to rejoin the team on Monday and participate in training camp. While attorney Paul Cunney insisted Dunnachie had a strong chance at winning at trial, Dunnachie said the decision to accept the charge was based on wanting to “move on” from the incident and […]

Welcome to Warrior camp

By Stephen Tsai on August 2, 2012

Smell that? Football is in the air. The first Warrior practice is at 2:10 p.m., but expect the players and the coaches to wander there before that. No pads for the first couple of days, and no double days until next week, if then. Here are some storylines: • Quarterback: It’s a three-person competition among David Graves, Jeremy Higgins and Sean Schroeder. Expect a decision on a No. 1 guy before the Warriors head to Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in […]

Roster additions

By Stephen Tsai on August 1, 2012

Defensive end Quenton Brown won’t be in training camp. But it appears Justin Turner has made it. No word yet on Ronald Fields. If you’re keeping track at home (or your office or at Starbucks, which could be your office), please add these names to your Warrior roster: • Clarence Elijah Langley • Blakelyn Birks • Jonathan Makaiau • Hunter Thompson Gentlemen, you may now start your search engines. * * * * * It will be hectic as the […]

Paper delivery

By Stephen Tsai on July 31, 2012

When the Warriors report to training camp tomorrow, each will receive a playbook for the next four weeks. And it will be in paper. Although the Warriors have the capability of making the playbook available through smart phones and tablets, head coach Norm Chow is an advocate of the good ol’ ink-on-paper method. (Which reminds me: How many have renewed your newspaper subscriptions?) The players received playbooks in April, then returned them at the end of spring training. Tomorrow, they […]

Countdown

By Stephen Tsai on July 30, 2012

By tomorrow, the Warriors will be finalizing what will  be a 102-player roster for training camp. The players report on Wednesday, and the first practice is Thursday afternoon. They are awaiting word on JC cornerbacks Justin Turner and Ronald Fields and offensive lineman Mike Milovale. Those three are completing work on associate degrees — eligibility requirements for this coming season. This past weekend, Turner went to Seattle to take a test. He is expected back in town today or tomorrow. […]
