Wednesday updates

Here’s the Warrior Beat update:

• Cornerback Ronald Fields has returned to California to work on the things he needs to work on to transfer to UH. The fall semester begins Aug. 20. If he’s not ready at that time, then he will grayshirt and join the Warriors in January. He has a redshirt year to burn.

• Offensive lineman Mike Milovale is expected to be cleared fairly soon. He’s completed the work for an associate degree, the main requirement for a JC transfer. It’s just a matter of the paperwork being … well, whatever it is that happens to paperwork.

• Defensive lineman Storm Akiona has been added to the active roster.

• And from the bullpen — tap, tap, tap the right arm — the call goes to defensive back Jack Damuni.

• John Nihi is no longer on the team.

• Wide receivers Chris Gant, whose competing for a starting job at Z (as well as kickoff returner), and Allen Sampson are out with injuries. Neither ailment is considered serious.

• Former Warrior Tom Tuinei is scheduled to address the team tonight.

* Quarterback Sean Schroeder has the No. 1 job, but not a football scholarship … yet.

• No. 2 quarterback Jeremy Higgins also is not on scholarship.

  2. letsgowarriors August 8, 2012 7:28 am

will the coaches release a depth chart before the USC game? at least for offense?

  3. gigi-hawaii August 8, 2012 7:29 am

    Thanks for the reminder, ST.

A friend received a letter from the publisher of the SA, telling her to stop copying SA photos and articles to her blog.

Hawaiianbod: Still praying for you! Speedy recovery!

BHF2: the JUGS got a good workout yesterday 🙂 I didn’t “film” but “digitized” it pre practice

  7. Dave LetterMan August 8, 2012 7:37 am

    Morning Tsaikos!

Interesting to see Allegiant Air will start direct flights between Hawaii and Boise. A little late to benefit UH though.

  8. Stephen Tsai August 8, 2012 7:38 am

    Gigi:

I guess there have been problems lately. They told me I had to print a reminder.

  9. Stephen Tsai August 8, 2012 7:40 am

    Dave LetterMan:

Although Boise made nice-nice to UH at the MWC media function, it was clear those two will never meet again after this year. Boise doesn’t want to go to Hawaii, Hawaii doesn’t want to go to Boise.

  10. wafan August 8, 2012 7:41 am

    Happy Hump Day!

  11. lanikailad August 8, 2012 7:41 am

ST: They can remind you all they want, but it’s simply not correct that SA has a copyright in what blog members post!

  12. wafan August 8, 2012 7:42 am

Continued prayers and positive thoughts to H-Bod.

    Good things will happen!

  13. Stephen Tsai August 8, 2012 7:43 am

    lanikailad:

    True.

But the copyright reminder is about the host’s posts, not the readers’ comments.

You do know this is about me, right?

  14. gigi-hawaii August 8, 2012 7:47 am

Pinterest has been posting my blog photo of Chicken Madeira, which hubby ordered at Cheesecake Factory a few years ago. My blog stats show they have been poaching that photo numerous times.

Isn’t that a violation, even though I don’t post a copyright on my blog?

  15. wafan August 8, 2012 7:49 am

Every year I warn my kids about plagiarism. A bunch of years ago one of my kids turned in an assignment. After a few minutes of checking I found she had lifted it from a Master’s dissertation. A quick call and the university contacted the family.

  16. Shoko August 8, 2012 7:52 am

    Oh wow, Wafan.

    Prayers to HB. Get well!

  17. Shoko August 8, 2012 7:53 am

Isn’t paraphrasing also a form of plagiarism?

  20. papajoe2 August 8, 2012 8:00 am

Has anybody flown on Allegiant Air yet? I heard that the seats were a bit narrow and cannot recline at all. They are now going to Spokane (Gonzaga and Washington State) and Boise. I’ll be using Allegiant to Vegas in a few weeks. It was way cheaper than any other air fare but now I heard from 2 different people that it is uncomfortable.

  21. koakane August 8, 2012 8:02 am

Can anyone tell me what the football practice schedule is starting today before they go to Hickam? Tnx

  25. 702WarriorFan August 8, 2012 8:20 am

    papajoe2

haven’t used Allegiant but see their

Checked and Carry-On Baggage Fees and Allowances.

Fares cheap but bags not free.

  26. Kekoa August 8, 2012 8:23 am

    G’day Tsaiko villagers!

A whole lotta shakin’ going on in LA agin this AM. Screecher must have caused the after schocks.

  27. tommui August 8, 2012 8:23 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

papajoe2 – according to SeatGuru, Allegiant seats have ptich of 30 and width (seat) 17″

Hawaiian Air in its short haul Boeings, have the same pitch but the width is 18″.

  28. WarriorNY August 8, 2012 8:23 am

I’m glad you mentioned the copyright issue. I saw people basically copy and paste entire Ferd/Reardon/ST articles from the pay-for content on the SA site on one of other forums/blogs…

  29. Kekoa August 8, 2012 8:26 am

The next be rumble they will experience will be at the UH vs SC game on 1 Sep.

    Schock & Awe Warriors!

  30. papajoe2 August 8, 2012 8:29 am

702WarriorFan, yes they have all kinds of fees, even seat choices, but I got a van for a week included, for the same price for 2 people’s round trip air only, on the next cheapest airfare. You know the saying, “you get what you pay for”, well according to 2 people, its uncomfortable. 5 1/2, 6 hours to Vegas being uncomfortable for cheaper fares has me doubting my choice. Luggage (which you pay for, including carryons) can not be more that 40 lbs. It’s hard when you are visiting family that lives there and they expect omiage from Hawaii. We’ll be mailing the gifts.

  31. papajoe2 August 8, 2012 8:31 am

Thanks tommui. One inch may be alright for skinny guys, but for me….yikes!

  32. (Jesse) James August 8, 2012 8:31 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!!!

Hope everyone has a good day.

    Thanks for the updates ST.

  33. HawaiiMongoose August 8, 2012 8:31 am

ST, I saw this in your article this morning:

“Edwards, Grimes, Ne’Quan Phillips, Dee Maggitt and Mike Martin have rotated at the two corner positions.”

What happened to Marrell Jackson? He came in with more high school accolades than Phillips.

  34. Stephen Tsai August 8, 2012 8:35 am

    HawaiiMongoose:

    Jackson is mostly a safety.

The coaches keep praising Clay but I keep forgetting to ask whether it’s Brian or Charles.

  35. letsgowarriors August 8, 2012 8:36 am

wonder wat the holdup for Fields is. supposedly he was a full qualifier out of HS.

i believe Marrell Jackson is a safety, not a corner.

  36. papajoe2 August 8, 2012 8:37 am

Heard from a guy who attended every practice that the “qbs in waiting” seem to have stronger arms than #1 and #2. Future looks bright if they learn the system.

  37. Ipu Man August 8, 2012 8:37 am

So…ST, can we quote you on anything?

  38. papajoe2 August 8, 2012 8:39 am

ST, what about Sterling Jackson? Wasn’t he one of the runing backs last year? Is he injured?

  43. Ryan_12177 August 8, 2012 8:55 am

Can we get an update on who is running with the first teams on both sides of the ball? We’ve had a week of training camp and gotten no updates on TE, WR, LB, DE, DT,

  44. lowtone123 August 8, 2012 8:58 am

ST: Seems like the defensive backfield come in with a lot of potential but early on it seems the front seven is ahead of them. Is it a problem of depth or lack of experience?

  45. madeinhawaii August 8, 2012 9:03 am

  47. lowtone123 August 8, 2012 9:07 am

MIH: I know with JT not coming and Fields may have to grayshirt it’s pretty thin.

  48. SteveM August 8, 2012 9:18 am

    Good morning everyone!

I think what ST writes and his pix at the top of every new blog page is called a “blog entry”. He makes blog entries daily. The content of the blog entry is copyrighted since it is “published” by the Star-Advertiser. They certainly don’t want to copyright or have ownership over what readers comment… they would probably be sued a lot… 😐

  49. madeinhawaii August 8, 2012 9:22 am

    papajoe2:

Stronger arms are only good if we have receivers that can get down field fast enough and create separation between themselves and their cover.

  50. madeinhawaii August 8, 2012 9:26 am

Is Nihi going to transfer away?

  51. Ryan_12177 August 8, 2012 9:27 am

Actually, I’d like to join Na Koa and get a polo shirt. Anyone know how I do that? Gotta support Powder Puff. And Norm Chow.

  53. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 8, 2012 9:30 am

the QB (singular) in waiting does have a stronger arm and looks to be above the rest. Foot work looks awesome too. Lots to look forward to next season as well.

  54. kawika49 August 8, 2012 9:31 am

Say it isn’t so. Penn State to have player names on FB jerseys.

  55. HawaiiMongoose August 8, 2012 9:33 am

Re #35 and #36, thanks ST and letsgowarriors. Makes sense, Jackson is taller than Phillips, and his bio does confirm that he played safety in high school. Somehow I’d gotten it into my head that both of the Florida frosh were corners.

  56. WarriorNY August 8, 2012 9:42 am

Despite Turner, Dorsey and possibly Fields not making it, I’m still excited with the skill we have at CB… I can’t wait to watch the Edwards/Grimes vs Lee/Woods man matchups… Let’s shock some people…

Is our #1 QB in waiting on scholarship? Or paying his own way this year?

  60. Stephen Tsai August 8, 2012 10:36 am

Schroeder is paying his own way.

  61. Stephen Tsai August 8, 2012 10:38 am

Graham was hoping for a Hail Mary to play this year. Doesn’t appear it will happen.

  62. al August 8, 2012 10:40 am

the coup of this year’s recruiting class is tony grimes. from out of the blue he came and he is talented.

coaches must have had an inkling that one or two db recruits were not going to make it through the window.

  63. letsgowarriors August 8, 2012 10:45 am

yeah, of all potential bounce backs, id take grimes over all of them. nothin against turner, dorsey and myles. id order them as grimes, myles, turner and dorsey.

  64. al August 8, 2012 10:57 am

we may be the only d1 school who’s top two qb’s are walk-ons.

by the end of day (sorry for using this worn out cliche) we have got to appreciate the hard work chow and company have done to get such a great influx of new talent is so short of a time.

it is a credit to coach for recruiting coaches who were so in tune with the pulse of recruitment of players and being able to be effective closers at that.

i like that they recognized that we not only have to be known as “second chance university” but more so on the broader scope of things simply put be known as “chance university” as evidenced by the coming of graham, schroeder, hall, sai, for example.

(((drools at the years to come)))

  67. Derek August 8, 2012 11:05 am

Amazing that the top QBs on the depth chart are not on scholarship. At the same time Barkley is a 5 star recruit who is the top rated Heiman candidate. Doesn’t seem fair, but you never know about injuries. Maybe Barkley gets hurt in fall practice on a freak play. That changes things quite a bit. Strange things happen!

  68. d1shima August 8, 2012 11:06 am

    Happy Birthday Ian Scheuring!

  71. al August 8, 2012 11:14 am

at one time barkley had hawaii as one of his top five colleges. but that was when he was a sophmore and we had this record setting offense with a gun slinger of a coach.

  72. al August 8, 2012 11:20 am

i wonder if tom tuinei’s good buddy is going to be with him when he addresses the players?

he’d be able to chime in very appropriately.

  73. Stephen Tsai August 8, 2012 11:21 am

It would have been tremendous to have Edwards, Grimes, Fields, Turner and Phillips at corner.

But in the history of UH sports, there has never been an overflow of talent and timing.

I remember the year Chris Gaines was out.

Or Seth Sundberg was cleared to play … the day after the season ended.

Or Jason Ross leaving to play baseball.

Or Niko Vitale being out with a concussion.

    That’s just life.

  74. Da Punchbowl Kid August 8, 2012 11:32 am

Colt Brennan started as a walk-on. So did that fellah coachin’ over at Kaiser.

  75. DaveLetterMan August 8, 2012 11:34 am

You’re right, ST. Can’t cry over spilt milk. Gotta move on with what we got and what we got isn’t too shabby.

  76. Da Punchbowl Kid August 8, 2012 11:35 am

True dat, regarding the quality of newcomers, al. Tween then and the veterans, we gonna surprise some people.

I was gonna make a joke about drooling, but they all seem kinda creepy.

  78. A-joe August 8, 2012 11:56 am

I grew up in a small town always playing for underdog teams. When we’d occasionally pull off upsets against bigger teams the excuses would come flying- “Oh, we didn’t have our star players.” “We had an off night.”

    BIG WOOP!

I don’t wanna hear any excuses!! I want every team come at us stacked, loaded and ready to do damage!! I want them all to put out their best!!!

I want USC’s best!! They better have lifted world record weights for the past 9 months! They better have been doing major cardio every single day! I want Barkley at his healthiest! I want Wes Horton and George Uko hungry and foaming at mouth!!!

    Why?

Because, I wanna relish in that very moment as their eyes and hearts begin to realize that-

despite all the accolades and press coverage of possibly being #1,

despite having the best players in the nation,

despite having the best training facilities money can buy,

despite all the countless hours of intense off season training vested-

    it all STILL

    wasn’t enough to defeat us!

I want this game to haunt each and every player and coach for the rest of their lives!! That despite all their efforts to shrug off this loss as just another game, they personally can’t let go of the pain.

I want each and every player on USC, 30 years from now, either be laying in bed, waiting at a stop light or playing with their grand kids still feel the fresh pain pour into their stomach as they think to themselves, “if we only had defeated Hawaii my life would be different today…”

I want a snippet in Lane Kiffen’s eulogy to one day read, “Lane almost had an undefeated season and a national championship were it not for Hawaii…”

    I LOVE THIS GAME!!!!

  79. bigwave96744 August 8, 2012 11:57 am

Last year our top 2 QBs (Moniz & Austin) were also walkons.

Since 2000 the top High School QB RECRUITS, to produce as Warriors were Timmy Chang, Tyler Graunke, Inoke Funaki then David Graves ( in that order)

Top walkon QBs, Brennan, Moniz, Austin. With Schroeder and Higgins in the wing.

Top JC recruited QBs Rolo, Alexander, Wheildon

  80. bigwave96744 August 8, 2012 12:03 pm

    I keep wondering, what if:

    Mack recruited Manley over Spain

    And/Or

    Mack retained Steele Jantz

    And/Or

    Mack brought in Tate Forcier

Imagine any of those 3 in Norms Offense…

    Again, just wondering

  81. A-joe August 8, 2012 12:11 pm

    83. If so,

    -Chow wouldn’t be here.

    -Donovan would still be AD.

-We’d be wondering if Mac’s contract would be renewed

-Our love/hate for UH football would still be the same…

  82. WarriorNY August 8, 2012 12:13 pm

I wonder what happens to Manley if NMST doesn’t have a league to play in 2013???

  83. d1shima August 8, 2012 12:20 pm

Thanks for posting the link WNY. Interesting stuff.

  84. d1shima August 8, 2012 12:24 pm

If Forcier had transferred the school could have admitted one more applicant since he was really unlikely to fill any seat in a class! 😈

  85. helencalif August 8, 2012 12:41 pm

Regarding why Graves is now #3 QB and now practicing as a receiver, go to Aug 6 comments and read comment #65 by Stephen Tsai. He is right.

  86. Kevin August 8, 2012 12:42 pm

UH Football replica jerseys are back in stock and to my dismay they are still in funeral BLACK.

Still same tattoo design on the shoulders, this year different #s though.

And for some reason they are $5.00 more this time.

For green jerseys Ill pay more, for the same.. no thanks.

  87. PolyMom August 8, 2012 12:49 pm

@81- A joe I love your post…I just LOVE you. I want to see Hawaii take Matt Barkley down! Since I am taking so much ass dashing from the USC fans already. Lots of BIG talk here in California.

  88. (Jesse) James August 8, 2012 12:52 pm

#81 A-Joe…I never grew up in a small town but I went to Damien….and as gramps, wafan, and djmitcho can attest we suffered our fair share of losses but we took on all comers….. 🙂

  89. (Jesse) James August 8, 2012 12:52 pm

I should say we suffered “more than our fair share of losses”

  90. Down with pUSC August 8, 2012 12:54 pm

Hey if they can put an F in front of UCLA, we can put a P in front of USC

    Go Warriors!

  91. Wes'side Warrior August 8, 2012 1:02 pm

    Howzit, everyone!

    First off… Prayers for HawaiianBod!

Secondly, gratz to Clarissa!!! Way to represent!

And finally, I don’t see doom and gloom just ’cause a player or two didn’t make it in, for whatever reason(s). I think the caliber of players we brought in, while overhauling our whole system, honoring scholarships, making do with those already on board… speaks volumes for our coaching staff. We’re heading in the right direction. I feel it.

And like A-Joe says, I hope USC comes at us full on. I’d hate to hear any excuses after the game. Give us your best shot, and we’ll give you our best shot. Only way to make an honest assessment. Also… don’t we open at Aloha with them next year? Barkley moves on, and we get a year under our collective belts. It’s getting good, baby!

  92. Sportsgooru August 8, 2012 1:18 pm

Hey Steven, Do you know if practice is at 11 am again on saturday? I was there last week and it was a blast. Anyone looking to get insight into the team…i HIGHLY recommend it. Also bummer about Ron Fields. I’ve been touting the defensive backfield over and over this summer so hopefully he makes it in time for the SC game.

  93. mctruck August 8, 2012 1:35 pm

Papajoe….I’ve traveled via Allegiant?, several times from Shreveport, Louisiana to Vegas non-stop and enjoyed the ride…sitting pretty tight but good way to make friends, especially if there’s one good looking wahine sitting next to you. peanuts and drinks, and …no regular meals…I took advantage of purchasing hot sandwiches in the terminal before departure.

I think Graves is an outstanding leader so I really hope he makes it on the playing field and he makes his mark as a slot back…

  99. jimmy the lock August 8, 2012 2:08 pm

No limit on dreaming big, reality is what counts.

For example, no reality intended, Kevin dreams of being a T-Rex. Not gonna happen but you may wind up with big teeth and short arms. lol That’s why no tease someones faults or your kid may inherit them.

Hey, Manoa Mist! Always good to hear from you. Re #54 – thanks so much! Love to have you as a member of Nā Koa…or anyone else for that matter. Thanks, Stretch for the membership link. Don’t forget folks: the 16th Annual Pigskin Pigout is Thursday, August 23 at Murphy’s. Tickets are $100 each…let Stretch or me know if you need tickets….we’ll deliver them to you – with a smile of course. 🙂

Caught the practice yesterday….I have somewhat of an untrained, amateur football-watching eye, but the team looks a whole lot better than Spring Ball to me. Of course, that’s just me. 🙂

  106. jimmy the lock August 8, 2012 3:01 pm

Just saw an add in the Star Advertiser for 50% at Lung Fung. Anyone have opinions of that place?

  107. Kapahulu August 8, 2012 3:02 pm

UH Quarterback Sean Schroeder was interviewed on the radio yesterday afternoon by the ESPN1420 Sports Animals (Chris Hart & Gary Dickman). They asked Sean if he had a nickname when he was at Duke. His reply was sometimes they would call him Shredder!

Gary’s reply was………..I like it, as in Shredding the Defense.

I wonder if the nickname will catch on. I could get used to it. Could be intimidating!

  108. PolyMom August 8, 2012 3:09 pm

PowderPuff please sell those tickets as we are packing boxes of excellent items for the auction.

We have Autographed Independent Skate Boards donated by WeeMan.

Storm played for Waianae as a FS/LB and is 6’1″ and 170 – but this was back in 2007/08.

Have no idea where he has been since then – military?

  117. Polyboy808's Mom August 8, 2012 4:23 pm

Oh nooooooooo! Shame, my boy talk like that. I no raise him to speak that way.

Boy! Why you talk like that about Colt? That’s disrespectful! You bring shame on our family name when you say things like that! I disappointed in you!

Have respect for yourself, our family and others!

    “When I was 4, I dreamt of being a T-Rex.”

    Why am I not surprised…?

  121. Down with pUSC August 8, 2012 5:46 pm

Thanks Al and bighilofan2….just a daily lurker here hopefully ST doesn’t ban me. Thought I’d drop by and add some humor. Go Warriors!

  122. Kevin August 8, 2012 5:52 pm

    dpk,

Life would be easier.. Someone creates problems, just eat them. Two birds with one stone as you’ve just created more time since you don’t need to eat breakfast, lunch, dinner, etc….

And if you are full, just step on them.

    So much easier…

  123. Kevin August 8, 2012 5:54 pm

    pUSC,

Humor is appreciated. Keep doing it. Don’t worry, those that are the most fickle about little things probably won’t get the humor in your blog name anyway.

  124. Da Punchbowl Kid August 8, 2012 6:01 pm

    Kevin –

Personally, I’m glad you didn’t end up as a T-Rex. Youda had a really hard time workin’ a keyboard with them claws and we’da missed you here. 😆

  125. kawika49 August 8, 2012 6:05 pm

Fort Street Ewa Mauka Makai; too many coaches maka pia da eye. Tree more weeks we fine out.

  126. Kevin August 8, 2012 6:05 pm

I believe as a 18 foot tall dinosaur I would fall under the affirmative action thingy and some people might question why a carnivorous creature than can only communicate in loud belching roars and has a penchant for devouring the mass quantities of pigeons in the downtown Honolulu area would be employed in an office setting.

It would be tremendously unfair that due to my appearance and un-human like nature that people would look past my mental qualifications for employment thanks to the “affirmative action” law.

Being a T-Rex in modern day society would be difficult.

  127. BigHiloFan2 August 8, 2012 6:07 pm

A T-Rex? Work in customer service.

    Customer acting up? Eat ’em.

  131. wafan August 8, 2012 6:14 pm

    New form of toe-jam.

  132. Da Punchbowl Kid August 8, 2012 6:14 pm

    141 –

Well by golly, as T-RexKevin, I betchu youda been able to get a job at the state capitol as a security guard, ya know, keeping the place place free of pigeons. Best of all you wouldn’t have to be smart, your job would be to eat, and you could speak “pidgin” whenever you felt like it! 18 feet tall in a uniform?! Dats a chick magnet, fo sho, right dere! 😆

  133. Kevin August 8, 2012 6:16 pm

    Wafan,

    I don’t work in customer service. I retreive things… 😎

  134. Down with pUSC August 8, 2012 6:16 pm

@Kevin- thanks! yes my name tag has a double meaning but don’t tell ST. hehe

  135. wafan August 8, 2012 6:16 pm

Short arms would make brushing your teeth difficult.

Might as well forget about flossing everyday.

  136. wafan August 8, 2012 6:18 pm

    Kevin . . .

Yeah, I would guess retrieving things would be really easy as a T-Rex.

Not too many arguments. Well, at least one’s you would lose.

  137. Kevin August 8, 2012 6:20 pm

If there is one thing this job has taught me, is to smell bull****. Really good at sniffing it out over the phone, even better in person. No amount of Reyn Spooner aloha shirt collections can hide the pilau scent of b.s. *ahem*

Oddly enough, did you know a Tyrannosaurs, showed the largest olfactory bulbs relative to brain size and body mass?

  138. Kevin August 8, 2012 6:21 pm

    Down w/ pUSC,

    Stay true sir.

Also, you are what you eat.

(lets see someone try catch dat one…)

  139. al August 8, 2012 6:25 pm

kevin…only three of us caught the humor in that guys acronymical humor.

  140. al August 8, 2012 6:26 pm

and kevy…your personality could resemble a t-rex some of the times.

that’s better than the other t-rex wannabee who better go on a diet before he look the t-rex’s egg.

  141. Da Punchbowl Kid August 8, 2012 6:26 pm

    #150 –

Tie two pigeons together with 8 feet of dental floss. Grasp one pigeon in each hand. Floss with confidence.

  142. al August 8, 2012 6:27 pm

mwaaaahaaaaaa….(spits out his coffee and sprays the laptop!!!!)

    t-rex you on it today.

    ahahahahaa.

  143. al August 8, 2012 6:28 pm

  144. Da Punchbowl Kid August 8, 2012 6:29 pm

  146. al August 8, 2012 6:31 pm

so kazz…you are in fine form today.

good to see that humor is still a part of you.

you must have had a great day…

or something you ate makes you smile.

  147. Da Punchbowl Kid August 8, 2012 6:33 pm

    #153 –

    Same as #154.

#158 – Panicked pigeons trying to escape are the leading cause of bleeding gums amongst T-Rexes. Most dentists reccomend gentle flossing for their T-rex patients.

  148. BigHiloFan2 August 8, 2012 6:36 pm

  159. Hendo August 8, 2012 7:43 pm

Have flown on Allegiant twice, once to Medford and the other time to Kalispell. Both times our flights were delayed due to engine problems. They use very old and dirty MD-80 aircraft on the mainland. Additionally, they charge you fees for things other carriers won’t, including booking online, seat assignments and carry-on bags. Ask them how you can purchase offline to save on an online purchase and they will tell you you have to go to the airport. Plus, they are in the process of reducing legroom to squeeze in more passengers per flight. Moreover, you generally can’t contact them by phone, only by email. I’m not kidding. At least to me, Hawaiian is the better choice by far, particularly if you’re going to Las Vegas. I guarantee if you chance ‘um, you’ll see for yourself what I mean.

  160. SteveM August 8, 2012 8:00 pm

I received a couple more photos after I explained the “Young Tsai-ko” game plan last night, so I’ll elaborate:

First phase will be a closed contest of only the participants. I will email them the location of the photos. Answers are “fill in the blank” guesses. The best guesser and the most difficult photo to guess will be determined.

Rather than give immediate answers, a Second phase (still limited to the participants only) will have names as multiple choice guesses for each photo. A phase 2 winner will be determined.

There might not be a Phase 3 unless someone…say, the blog host, wants to use some pix for a blog-wide contest. 🙂

    – – – – – – – – –

Want to participate in a “Guess the Young Tsai-ko” game? Just email me a photo of yourself in high school/college/or eary 20’s. Must have attended at least 3 Richardson Field tailgates or 2 karaoke calls. Or any one of blog parties 1-4.

email photo to: stevem.hnl (at) gmail.com by Saturday evening.

  161. BigHiloFan2 August 8, 2012 8:08 pm

I’ve heard of mean senior figures. Coach Chow must be rubbin off on a certain senior Tsai-ko.

  165. Haleakala August 8, 2012 8:32 pm

I was curious about the quarterback at Duke who was the starter for three years. Sean Renfree was a PARADE All-American. If a college team gets one of those, of course the coach has to play him. Schroeder was highly rated also but he never a chance to start behind the 6’5″ Renfree Here is part of Renfree’s accomplishments from the Duke website.

Prior to Duke: Four-year letterman at Notre Dame Prep under Scott Bemis … selected to the 2008 PARADE All-America team … charted as the No. 10 quarterback in the country by Scout.com … rated as the No. 15 pro-style quarterback nationally and No. 9 overall prospect in the state of Arizona by Rivals.com … selected to compete at the Elite 11 Quarterback Camp … named Arizona’s Big School Class 5A and 4A Player of the Year and to the All-Arizona team as a senior by The Arizona Republic … chosen as a 2007 PrepNation 101 All-American … as a senior, led Notre Dame Prep to a 13-1 record and the 2007 Arizona 4AII state championship … capped prep career by completing 23-of-33 passes for a state championship game record 411 yards and five TDs against Cottonwood Mingus … as a senior, completed 197-of-357 passes for 3,353 yards and 41 TDs with just six INTs … in junior campaign, threw for 2,483 yards and 25 TDs with five INTs … passed for 1,533 yards and 10 TDs as a sophomore.

  168. gigi-hawaii August 8, 2012 8:47 pm

SteveM: you should post the photo contest rules at the beginning of the blog instead of the tail end, because there are more readers in the morning. Just a suggestion.

I happen to be commenting to let you know of the perfect discovery our daughter encountered reading through your webblog. She mastered a good number of things, most notably what it’s like to have an ideal helping style to have folks smoothly grasp specific complex topics. You really did more than our own expected results. Thank you for churning out those great, safe, explanatory as well as fun tips on the topic to Evelyn.

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

Yeah… Don’t share the blog or other news about the Warriors online. After all, we just want to keep news under control. Hey, I paid for my subscription… Pffft….

Why not quote with credits? Better for news dissemination AND to drive MORE readers to the SA, right? Right.

Healing energy to the bod/soul. Hawaiiansoul… Love ya, guy!

  201. LizKauai (iPad) August 9, 2012 6:38 am

    Happy Birthday Midnight!

As for Warrior football… Am I thr only one who has lost the closeness to the kids? The “this is a business” mode is not my cuppa tea. I am a fan because I support our young men in cleats. So far, I don’t get it about yhis organization.

    There, I said it.

    Go Warriors, whoever you are!

  202. Shoko August 9, 2012 6:50 am

Not sure how the free use clause would apply to paywall sites. However, I would agree that it might draw more readers to the SA.

    In other news.

Usain Bolt told a British paper that he would seriously consider playing for Manchester United. I think most people here would like him to play in the NFL.

ESPN reported Chris Johnson saying he would fair well against Bolt in the 40. I think that would be pay-per-view worthy, however it would probably go down as the shortest PPV broadcast in history (4.2 seconds, or thereabouts).

    Mornig folks!
