Time’s a wastin’

Let’s see . . .

1. UH got scammed on the Stevie Wonder concert.

2. UH responded with two bad news conferences — A) When Jim Donovan was left alone to sorta-sorta explain why there would be no concert and, B) When Donovan was the only UH official not invited for the announcement — in front of Hawaii Hall, with no amps — that an investigation would be launched into the mess.

That was in July.

There will be a hearing on Monday that will eventually conclude that UH got scammed on the Stevie Wonder concert and UH responded with two bad news conferences.

Meanwhile, Hamilton Library continues to crumble and nobody can figure out who’s in charge of telling the Color Guard to show up for the national anthem at UH football games.

* * * * *

It’s interesting that a guy could be out of town for 40 years yet still know so much about UH football history. But credit Norm Chow for naming Buzzy Hong as this week’s honorary captain.

* * * * *

Never doubt our readers’ crystal balls. (OK, that just sounded wrong right after I typed “never.”)

Kody Afusia is indeed getting a look at defensive tackle. It makes sense, although it does cause a shuffle on the offensive line.

Now, can readers offer some stock tips . . .

* * * * * *

For those doubting the importance of screening committees, just remember this guy once applied to be UH’s head coach: Smile!

  8. A-TEAM September 20, 2012 7:08 am

Afusia was considered a “SLEEPER” coming out of a small school until they found out he committed to a D-1 school (UH) then all of a sudden he had a few stars behind his name. The kid can play, saw his his HL from HS school. Also a wrestler quick hands, feet and good pad level.

  9. letsgowarriors September 20, 2012 7:08 am

stock tip, you should have bought AAPL months ago.

  10. John Fitzgerald Byers September 20, 2012 7:10 am

And people still think uh needs to be run with full automomy? The truth earns no political idealistic points.

    BIG DEAL! Bwahahaha.

  13. letsgowarriors September 20, 2012 7:12 am

i hope Afusia can be like Lafaele and make the switch permanent. it would give us good depth at DT going into next season, esp since Samia and Friel will be coming off injuries.

    SR – Matagiese, Puu-Robinson

JR – Afusia (? or back to OL), Samia (coming off ACL injury)

SO – Friel (coming off injury)

FR – Andrade (or will be be SO next season?), Thompson

and then hopefully we still get Dejon Allen (GS FR), David Moala (JC SO), and Kennedy Tulimasealii (FR).

  14. A-TEAM September 20, 2012 7:14 am

    Afusia is a R-Soph.

  15. WarriorNY September 20, 2012 7:15 am

So I take it the coaches read these blog posts… That’s pretty awesome about Afusia…

    Nice call Jeezy

  16. Stephen Tsai September 20, 2012 7:15 am

Don’t forget Iuta Tepa, who has been practicing.

  17. letsgowarriors September 20, 2012 7:16 am

isnt Tepa gonna be a DE tho? i was just listing DTs. i guess Puu-Robinson is DE/DT.

  18. Stephen Tsai September 20, 2012 7:17 am

Actually, after I read some posts yesterday morning, I called Chow and asked if Afusia would be moving to defense.

He said: “As usual, you’re a day late. We decided that last night.”

Blog host: “Hah. I’m usually three days late. I’m getting better.”

I have a feeling Jeezy was sitting in the coaches’ meetings.

  19. Stephen Tsai September 20, 2012 7:19 am

    Letsgo:

Good point. This is what happens when I scan without really reading. If I were a reader I would be the one yelling “Foist” while posting fifth.

  20. letsgowarriors September 20, 2012 7:19 am

will there be any changes to the starting OL this game?

  21. letsgowarriors September 20, 2012 7:19 am

    any recruiting news?

  22. manoa September 20, 2012 7:20 am

Any business person can tell you the two problems that UH management has– and these two things create a vicious cycle. First, too man “leaders” with no one person clearly in charge who signs off and approves– you had the President, the Chancellor, ex-Chancellor, Athletic Director, and the guy who ran the Stan Sherrif center– who is it? Second, lack of communication and oversight of the athletic department by the upper campus. Move the UHAD to the upper campus he needs to have an office there and meet daily or at least weekly with the Chancellor or the President.

  23. Stephen Tsai September 20, 2012 7:21 am

But, yes, UH people do read the blog.

I know this because I try to write separate stuff for the paper and the blog. Yet, coaches will comment about blog items.

We give UH folks free access codes to the online edition. I wonder if they’re EBay-ing ’em.

  24. Stephen Tsai September 20, 2012 7:22 am

    letsgo:

As of now, no changes on offense. But there is competition at right tackle between Shigematsu and Milovale.

  25. Stephen Tsai September 20, 2012 7:24 am

UH doesn’t have many scholarships to offer, so I don’t expect any commitments until later.

But the weekend of Oct. 19 is going to be huge for coast-to-coast recruiting.

  26. WarriorNY September 20, 2012 7:28 am

ST, LOL… You don’t give yourself enough credit…

How has Tepa looked in practice? I remember watching his video out of high school and he looked like a beast…

  27. laulau head September 20, 2012 7:28 am

Buzzy Hong??? I found this little info about him…

William “Buzzy” Hong retired last year after serving the Hawaii Building and Construction Trades Council as its executive director since 1990. The Hawaii Building and Construction Trades Council is a chapter of the National Building Trades Council headquartered in Washington, D.C. His education includes an undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Hawaii and an associate’s degree in police science from Chaminade University.

By the way, mahalo to those who posted a response to my query about how many UHM students are allowed into the stadium for free, with their student ID cards. Would still like to see the (flood)gates opened (maybe by halftime) to those students who make it to the stadium and still want to get in, even if they are late or are above the 5k limit. Just print out comp student tickets to empty seats, trying to keep them close to the designated student section.

I am a fan of the marching band and the atmosphere they provide but when they play is part of the script.

Every game at UH in any sport has a script crafted by marketing dept to tie in with advertisements for the cororate sponsors.

The recorded music is not chosen by the band as they are part of the show.

    WarriorNY,

That’s kind of old news actually. For several seasons they’ve posted that phone # on the big screen at the stadium for people to call reporting problems. As far as the actual texting service, I cannot recall how new that is if it wasn’t in place prior to … ahem… NOW.

  88. Will-I-Am September 20, 2012 11:01 am

  89. Kevin September 20, 2012 11:02 am

Found a number for certain fans to complain about others that are standing and cheering too loudly at sportig events.

    # is 555-1234

Dial it. If no one answers, dial again and keep dialing until someone picks up.

  90. Kevin September 20, 2012 11:05 am

    Will-I-Am,

I was wondering the same thing. It seems if you text ALOHA to that number you will be sent a response asking what section and row the incident is occuring in.

  91. WarriorMojo September 20, 2012 11:18 am

    Re #68

A-House, yeah, I would agree with you that General Counsel has a conflict since they also had a role in this fiasco, but that’s not really the point for this upcoming Senate hearing.

This hearing is not a criminal investigation, disciplinary proceeding, personnel review or anything like that. The Senate has no authority to interfere with HR management at UH, thus no one is facing any kind of administrative or civil penalties based upon this hearing.

Rather, this hearing is purely a fact finding exercise into how and why UH got ripped off, how and why they handled the damage control in the manner they did, and what measures and safeguards were in place then or have now been put in place to ensure this doesn’t happen again. If Greenwood/Apple et al did nothing wrong, just tell the truth and be done with it. Or, if you’re worried because you screwed up, hire an attorney at YOUR expense.

Taxpayers ALREADY had to pay because someone at UH screwed up. Then we had to pay MORE because UH hired the most expensive firm in town to investigate and write a report detailing that UH screwed up, which we already knew. Now we have to pay YET AGAIN

Put it this way, when Mack, Bolla, Dobelle and JD were embroiled in contract terminations/restructuring, they each hired their OWN lawyer at their OWN expense. (JD’s lawyer ended being paid by UH as part of the settlement ONLY because UH totally mishandled JD’s situation).

So WHY is UH money being used for this purpose? Why is TAXPAYER money being used for this? And who authorized this expenditure and who has the authority to DENY this kind of expense? Does anyone?

  92. Old School Dave September 20, 2012 11:22 am

  94. John Fitzgerald Byers September 20, 2012 11:32 am

Autonomy works if there is competence and clearly with this administration and previous ones, it has not worked.

Why else would some concerned fans and boosters need to contact legislators to help move things forward? Semi-autonomy is just enough to keep UH administration on their toes when things reach their boiling point, but at the same time doesn’t allow the kind of accountability needed to prevent issues from arising.

Bottom line is the university is still a state institution funded on donations and tax payers and since the university is not able to operate on private funds alone, they should still be answering to the state and the legislators and the tax payers.

The amendment that was placed years ago for semi-autonomy should be YANKED. It has clearly not worked and despite the political ideology of some, facts are facts. The University of Hawaii will never be a private institution and will always be a public one, therefore the state needs to seize control of it and hold administrators (STATE employees) accountable for everything that happens.

I am a real dufus when it comes to computers – I tried to print the UH Band notice, but nada!

Say, would the star-advertiser be willing to print, for no charge, or set aside part of a page to print the brochure so those who see it and want to make a donation can do so?

since the UH Foundation handles all donations, must this be run through them or does all the $$ go the the “band” without a 3% “take” by the foundation?

    how is the weather?

is not the pond privately owned with NO tresspassing? or, am I behind time as article seemed to be asking for help in catching this “invasive” species?

if open to the public, wonder how many took advantage of the invite to grab some ono, ono crabs?

now, now, u wen axe tree questions again!!

  101. A-House September 20, 2012 12:01 pm

If you should catch a “monstah” fish or crab, will you let it go or let science examine it and then stuff it?

my first instinct is to let it go – the satisfaction is to see it; not necessarily eat it.

  102. jm2375 September 20, 2012 12:01 pm

Bought AAPL stock back in the early 90s for around $27/share. hehehe.

btw, Univ Ave off-ramp (east-bound) closed today from 9 am – 1 pm. (I know it’s late). Baboozes put the *1* sign *AT* the Bingham off-ramp. Had to go all the way to King St exit. Had I known it was closed, I would’ve gotten off at Punahou St.

  107. madeinhawaii September 20, 2012 12:11 pm

    A-House…

I believe Heiea is public… Kamaaina Kids operates the “park”… the fish pond further down the road towards Kahaluu is private and owned by the Wongs. That’s where all the weddings take place.

  108. madeinhawaii September 20, 2012 12:12 pm

Having said that, though. I don’t think you are allowed to fish/crab INSIDE the pond, but you can do so, outside of it.

  109. Shoko September 20, 2012 12:17 pm

Read an article that mentioned Nevada as being the first mainland college football team to play against Hawaii. That was back in 1920 and they traveled by ship (USS Maui) which took six days! I thought it was an interesting piece of history between the two schools.

    http://www.silverandbluesports.com/2012/09/20/a-look-back-at-the-packs-last-win-over-hawaii-on-the-island/

P.S. There are a few quotes from the Honolulu Advertiser about the games that were played in 1946 and 1948 (last time Nevada won in Hawaii). Think Ferd was just beginning his career back then…lol.

Anyway, its good to hear that Kaumeyer is doing some conditioning drills to prepare for the Wolf Pack. Heard the Packs no-huddle up-tempo offense is starting to pick up the pace. Running plays every 16 seconds. Should be a good game this weekend. If peeps don’t show up in the stands, they going miss a good game!

If the people called to appear before the state Senate hearing on Monday do not feel amply provided for by on-campus legal representation, I guess they have a right to hire outside counsel (e.g. Katz). But why in the world are we the taxpayers stuck with the bill? And just how stupid do these individuals think we the people are?

football: somewhat related to the warriors.

how much difference does coaching make in high school ball?

for years, the kalani falcons were the doormats of all high school football. one win every three years was cause to celebrate. to the credit of people like long time and current head coach greg taguchi the football program which had been on the brink of disintergration, was held together year after year. often times, literally by bandaid.

when the brothers lee left the university of hawaii football program, one by one, it was greg who solicited the help of these former mastermnds of the game. first ron and then cal placing them as the offensive and defensive coordinators for the falcons. greg taguchi not one of a huge ego welcomed the lee’s to help run and ressurect the fledgling football team.

the lee’s have certainly been instrumental in bringing the falcons to a 3 win and two loss record so far this year. yup, three wins already. they’ve done so by employing their expertise over the years and their legacy has also helped the falcons secure many more athletes that they would not have retained for their schools’ district.

    …nuff said.

    #96 A-House

All donations goes through UHF – remember UHF is a designated 501c(3) corp and all donations going to it or through it is tax-deductable.

UHF does all the paperwork – tax reporting, accounting etc for the various booster clubs. A $1,000 donation would be $30 and $100 would be $3.00 so the sum for all that kind of paperwork etc is comparatively cheap.

Can you image what Cades Schutte charged for the factfinding and what Bob Katz will be charging this coming week?

No, Tom, I can’t and that’s what scares me. As has been said before, the initial $200,000 loss is turning into a million dollar (multi-million dollar?) financial quagmire. What is the PUBLIC benefit or PUBLIC interest that justifies the hire of Torkildson? Why are we spending a million dollars to find out why we got swindled out of $200,000?

  149. RedZone September 20, 2012 2:34 pm

Pilares is mainly the kickoff returner. In games i have seen he has had very little pt on offense. But I think he has had a foot injury so I do not know what his current status is.

Okay time to watch the enemy.

  151. WarriorMojo September 20, 2012 2:42 pm

Greenwood/Apple et al have FIDUCIARY duties to the UH system and Hawaii taxpayers. They get paid BIG bucks to operate/oversee the UH system. In this instance they (or one or more of their subordinates) screwed up and money was scammed away. But that’s THEIR fault. It happened on THEIR watch.

So how do they justify spending MORE public money to protect against an inquiry into THEIR failures? The ONLY people who benefit from Torkildson’s involvement are Greenwood/Apple themselves. There is NO way that benefits the UH system or Hawaii taxpayers.

Again, who approves these hires and the invoices that are generated? Who, if anyone, has the authority to say, “Hey, wait a minute. What’s all this?” If these services are being paid out of some discretionary fund or something, I see potentially HUGE conflict of interest issues.

  152. papajoe2 September 20, 2012 2:46 pm

#163 WarriorMojo said: “I see potentially HUGE conflict of interest issues.”

It is not potential – it is actually a conflict of interest.

As I read it, Bob Katz (Torkildson Katz et al) will be at the hearing representing the UH (the corporate body). Needless to add, if some of the people from UH goofed – went contrary to the UH’s best interest – Katz cannot condone or excuse their actions.

If the various parties waive their rights to separate counsel and consent to Katz’ representation, that’s their problem.

Seems to me that it would be in the best interest of the University to clear this matter up. It would be a clear conflict if anyone of them should refuse to testify.

  186. Ipu Man September 20, 2012 4:08 pm

Big Canadian Nose Tackle, Atkison, intercepts BYU and scores TD.

He’s already drafted by the Candaian Pro Football League.

  187. cocobean September 20, 2012 4:09 pm

To me this legislative hearing is like picking at a scab. The damage is done they should let it heal over.

You can bet M.R.C. and anyone else involved is secure in the knowledge that UH can’t afford to terminate anyone. Dobelle walked away with a 7 figure settlement and Frazier a 6 figure settlement. M.R.C. knows she can get at least those two settlements combined if at some point she is asked to step down.

Unless this hearing is going to recover the lost money it’s a waste of time and as others have said a waste of tax payer money. Any kind of “answers” gotten will not be worth the time and money spent.

  188. Shoko September 20, 2012 4:11 pm

Yep, Atkinson is one athletic fatman. Heard he played fullback in H.S.

Another score for Boise courtesy of their cheaters-choice blue turf. How else do you explain a Nose Guard making a pick six? Da buggah is so big, the BYU QB threw it at him, thinking he was grounding the ball. (see LOL guideline above)

  191. Ipu Man September 20, 2012 4:14 pm

  199. Da Punchbowl Kid September 20, 2012 4:27 pm

Last comment about the turf. Ya know how Notre Dame has that tradition of players touching the “Play like a Champion today” sign when they take the field? The Donks should have their players kiss the Blue Turf when thay take the field on game day. No tellin’ how many times the Blue Monster has helped Boise in the past. Hate the Blue Turf!

  200. SAWARRIOR September 20, 2012 4:27 pm

wow, lava, manoa1 and i are the only ones picking our warriors to lose against nevada. i hope we are wrong.

  201. Da Punchbowl Kid September 20, 2012 4:28 pm

    they* that should read above…

  202. Da Punchbowl Kid September 20, 2012 4:30 pm

    wafan –

More like Blue Monster rising! (I promise, no more remarks about the cheating Blue Turf.)

  203. wafan September 20, 2012 4:32 pm

    Wow.

  204. Ipu Man September 20, 2012 4:46 pm

tommui, are you comparing her to cheese?

  205. mctruck September 20, 2012 4:53 pm

Defense on both sides pretty stingy….I don’t think too much of either QB’s. Well 4th qtr. shud tell it all. BSU needs this game more to stay in the mix for possible, whatcha-call-it bowl??

    Bring on the wolf pack!!

  206. d1shima September 20, 2012 4:56 pm

  211. Shoko September 20, 2012 5:32 pm

I’m sure there are alot of irritated mormons tonight. They should blame Romney for the loss…lol

  212. HiFlyer September 20, 2012 5:33 pm

What was BYU thinking, as bad as they were playing did they really think that they could convert a 2 pt. conversion.

  213. Don Weir (We-Ah) September 20, 2012 5:44 pm

    Gigi,

BOR chair is going to the hearing but I believe that the other regents should hear from students, taxpayers, alumni via elected representatives.

    Call them out on this.

  214. jm2375 September 20, 2012 5:44 pm

kitsunegari – no forget “wahinesoftballfan” (NOT)

  215. jm2375 September 20, 2012 5:49 pm

Giants had their way with the Panthers tonight, 36-7. No stats for Kealoha. Not even sure he played.

  216. HawaiiMongoose September 20, 2012 5:54 pm

Can’t fathom why BYU would go for two. Your defense has controlled BSU the whole game, your offense is finally starting to click, you can go into OT with all of the momentum by tying up the score… and you gamble the whole game on a play you have a less than 50/50 chance of converting. Nuts…

  217. RedZone September 20, 2012 6:02 pm

Wow Mendenhall blew it. Why go for 2? His defense was really good in the redzone and Peterson was afraid to use his kicker. Should have took it to overtime.

  218. tommui September 20, 2012 6:08 pm

#220 – no, but I wonder if the author thought about cheese when he wrote the lines!

I have to add (for my own protection) that I love brie, gouda, white cheddar …

  219. madeinhawaii September 20, 2012 6:12 pm

Awesome game today between BSU and BYU…. fell asleep just before BYU scored their TD… Woke up after the game ended….

About one minute left and Iolani scores a td to either tie the game

or go for two against Kamehameha.

  232. mo808 September 20, 2012 7:15 pm

This is a good Iolani game!

  233. Ipu Man September 20, 2012 7:17 pm

Extra 2 point pass picked off (cannot run back like in college) so looks like

Kamehameha will win this game. Imuha.

    Lots of time left…

  238. Ipu Man September 20, 2012 7:25 pm

Good morning. I hope a lot of people show up and write in to the Senate. Big thanks to tommui and WarriorMojo for posting about the wrinkles in the whole UH attorneys for Senate hearing mess.

Thanks, Ferd, for posting the Katz contract. $25,000 for appearance at legislature. Contract signed AUG. 20 by the “director of office of procurement and real property management.”

Looks like indeed the state is paying. A fill-in part of the contract says funds are available from “account 2269712.”

    Swell.
