Sneak previews

Every Monday, the Warriors stage a mini situational scrimmage involving redshirts and developing players.

During yesterday’s event, safety Mike Martin and cornerback Brian Clay delivered the biggest hits. Unfortunately, Donnie King was the recipient on both. But King, as always, bounced right back up. He’s a tough receiver.

Running back Marcus Langkilde scored the scrimmages’s only touchdown, on a 1-yard rush. The coaches are high on Langkilde, who has been under the radar (off the radar? Not on the radar?). He is not listed on the roster posted on the UH Web site.

It was a difficult decision, but the plan now calls for linebacker Benny Fonua to redshirt this season. The linebackers have been playing well enough to hold off using some of the younger players.

* * * * *

UH did a good job in trying to win back the students, with pep rallies, promotions and widespread coverage from Ka Leo O Hawaii.

There were 1,803 in the student section for the Lamar game, which is an increase from about 15, give or take two or three.

During today’s MWC conference call, Nevada’s Chris Ault was asked about his past difficulties winning in Hawaii:

“I don’t want to say it’s tougher because you’ve got enough time for preparation and opportunities to get things done,” Ault said. “We have not found a way to finish four quarters of it. When you go to Hawaii you’re playing a good football team. They’re a real sound team always. They play hard and play well at home like most teams do.”

    Already an interesting year!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

I think pulling a rabbit out of a hat is impressive.

Even more impressive is hiding a rabbit in a hat.

I vote that ST do a “miked up” segment of the players for the next Inside Access.

Are we allowed to vote what ST does at work?

Wrong blog but, R.I.P. Morgan Freeman.

  9. manoa#1 September 18, 2012 6:39 am

what happened to we are not in the redshirt business if the freshmans good they will play. chow blowing smoke outta his butt….fonua was good enough to play.

  10. d1shima September 18, 2012 6:39 am

    Great Morning All!

Nice to read about the young ‘uns.

    IS IT SATURDAY YET?

  11. Stephen Tsai September 18, 2012 6:40 am

i didn’t realize that Sean Schroeder and Tavita Woodard are so animated.

Schroeder went into the defensive locker room to rally up the fellas.

    Woodard led the pre-game chant.

  12. Stretch September 18, 2012 6:40 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!!

Was nice to see the students at the game. I am not promoting underage drinking, but one thing that will deter the students from coming to the game, is having “Liquor Enforcement” walking around the tailgates.

  13. letsgowarriors September 18, 2012 6:44 am

are they planning to redshirt brian clay?

  14. Stretch September 18, 2012 6:46 am

manoa #1 – I am sure if Fonua could help the team right now, he would be on the field. I have not been to practices recently so not sure if he is better than the players out there now. I’ll leave the evaluation to the coaches and trust they know who is ready and will help the team win the most.

  15. chawan_cut September 18, 2012 6:48 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

Good morning STRETCH! I am surprised that our resident critic hasn’t screamed why hasn’t Coach Chow converted Sean Schroeder to throw right handed.

  17. chawan_cut September 18, 2012 6:49 am

glad to see the students back. hope they enjoyed saturday and will be back all season long.

  18. Stephen Tsai September 18, 2012 6:51 am

I don’t think Fonua is 100 percent. He’s been limping.

  19. Stephen Tsai September 18, 2012 6:53 am

I bought my son good tickets for the game, and he instead decided to go into the student section. He said it’s way more fun there.

Plus, I think students don’t fight, like some adults.

  20. letsgowarriors September 18, 2012 6:55 am

from my count, about 7 freshmen have been used and still have their redshirt to burn.

Ben Clarke, NeQuan Phillips, Keke Williams, Jerrol Garcia-Williams, Marrell Jackson and Harold Moleni. player participation listed Josh Donovan, but i didnt see him on the field. probably missed him.

  21. G-Warrior September 18, 2012 6:59 am

Great job by Chow and company to bring out the students. It was great to see the student section more full and rowdy. The band was also lively and loud. I hope that trend continues… and spreads to the rest of the stadium.

It’s always a good sign when a team can redshirt talented players. The future looks bright!

  22. Kevin September 18, 2012 6:59 am

    Chawan,

    And the cannon!!!!

  23. Stephen Tsai September 18, 2012 7:00 am

i was walking past an intoxicated guy, who was being led away. He shouted at a cop: “I’m coming back.” And then he fell down.

I think a field sobriety test should be walking through a crowd without falling down.

    letsgo:

There are two guys on the redshirt bubble: Steven Lakalaka and Mike Andrade.

Lakalaka is going to be a very good player. Andade is coming off an injury, but the lack of depth at NT/DT might force his activation.

  26. Stretch September 18, 2012 7:03 am

#19 – I thought it was because they was being sukebe, but I guess that’s the reasoning that KK and JJ use.

  27. chawan_cut September 18, 2012 7:03 am

yeah, the fight near us was ridiculous. they waited for the cops to be there in the stands before they started throwing punches. yeah, smart move….

  28. d1shima September 18, 2012 7:05 am

    😆

  29. letsgowarriors September 18, 2012 7:06 am

yup. was gonna post that next.

Fonua, Lakalaka, Andrade (might play), Koloamatangi, Sai, Watanabe, Alo and Woolsey are recruits that havent played yet. anymore injuries and Andrade may be forced into action. the last 2 arent really Chow’s recruits.

  30. Stephen Tsai September 18, 2012 7:07 am

    Letsgo:

Donovan made the “travel” roster to the hotel last Friday/Saturday.

  31. letsgowarriors September 18, 2012 7:07 am

Allen Sampson is burning his redshirt this year. Brian Clay can still redshirt if he doesnt play this season.

  32. chawan_cut September 18, 2012 7:08 am

kevin, yes, i had to do a double take when i heard it too.

  33. Stephen Tsai September 18, 2012 7:08 am

    letsgo:

Forgot about Woolsey. He’s also on the bubble for redshirting. If they can get through this game without losing three quarterbacks, then Woolsey probably will redshirt. Shutter gets activated for game 4.

  34. Stephen Tsai September 18, 2012 7:09 am

    Kevin/Chawan:

“Ferd” and I had a debate. I thought there wasn’t a cannon near the end of last season. “Ferd” said there was.

    Was I mistaken?

  35. Stephen Tsai September 18, 2012 7:11 am

They wanted to create some separations in the classes, which is why Clay, now back at corner, is going to redshirt.

I think the forgotten man — Kawika Ornellas — has had some tendinitis issues that is keeping him from being moved up to the CB rotation.

  36. Stephen Tsai September 18, 2012 7:12 am

Kiha Sai has a shoulder injury and will likely apply for a medical redshirt.

As a freshman, medical redshirt and redshirt are basically the same thing. Where it will come into play is if he were to miss a future season because of a similar injury.

  37. lavamanoa#1 September 18, 2012 7:13 am

    Pomai,

    00 – 00

  38. Stephen Tsai September 18, 2012 7:14 am

I worry about Samson Anguay. Back-to-back years of ACL surgery must be frustrating. Plus, he grayshirted, so he’ll have been off the field for three seasons.

  39. letsgowarriors September 18, 2012 7:14 am

correct. any chance Moses redshirted his freshman season due to his previous knee injuries?

  40. chawan_cut September 18, 2012 7:14 am

there wasn’t a cannon last season. i think it was some sort of decision by the chancellor or something. they weren’t short on ammo blanks like the other year.

    CB class

Frosh: Phillips, Clay (RS), Armstrong (RS)

Soph: Maggitt, Sellers (S/CB, can still RS)

Jr: Edwards, Grimes, JHT (S/CB, can still RS)

    Sr: Ornellas

    Anthony Pierce supposedly greyshirting.

  43. letsgowarriors September 18, 2012 7:19 am

actually, Clay is a soph but will be in the same class as Phillips and Armstrong going forward.

  44. jeezy33 September 18, 2012 7:22 am

Any news on Amadi? He was someone I had huge expectations for out of high school. I always thought Hawaii could use him similar to Harvin or Trey Burton out of Florida. Maybe his speed isn’t as fast as I thought. Still young though.

  45. Kevin September 18, 2012 7:22 am

    Yup,

Chawan is right. No cannon at all last year.

  46. Wes'side Warrior September 18, 2012 7:23 am

    Howzit, everyone!

Always tough when starters go down, especially when it’s due to injury, and not academics. But it also opens doors for those waiting to show their stuff.

I’ll trust the coaches judgement and decisions before feeding any under-bridge-dwellers.

Just gotta make sure all paperwork and procedures are properly documented. The NCAA loves to deny us the smallest breaks, while catering to the money schools. Can’t take chances.

  47. Stephen Tsai September 18, 2012 7:24 am

    Ipu:

My long-lost uncle died in Las Vegas?

  48. Stephen Tsai September 18, 2012 7:25 am

  49. Stephen Tsai September 18, 2012 7:27 am

    Jeezy:

Amadi has the talent. He’s been struggling a bit. I think he just lost a lot of time while recovering from that shoulder surgery. I know they had plans for him at kick returner and slotback. Thing is, there’s just not a lot of opportunities to go around. They’re still trying to get more touches for Ostrowski. And I think Mike Edwards might have settled that KR situation.

  50. Stephen Tsai September 18, 2012 7:28 am

    Thanks for the cannon update.

  51. Stephen Tsai September 18, 2012 7:29 am

    To-do list:

    • Cannon — Check.

    • ROTC — AWOL

    • Hawaii 78 — Mute

  52. Wes'side Warrior September 18, 2012 7:31 am

By the way, I asked a couple of times following the game concerning the number of UHM students allowed into the stadium “free”.

Does anyone know the actual number?

As stated, I could’ve sworn I heard BC announce that he thought 5k was the number allowed. But another poster commented that, even with a partially empty student section, they were still turning students away at the gate(s).

There really should be something worked out between UH and the Stadium Authority to allow ID-carrying students (from any UH campus) to be allowed in at a certain point in any game. Would it cost too much to process “comp” tickets for students to end up in those empty seats? I mean, they’d possibly bring in extra concessions/souvenir revenue while filling up the stadium, especially since our games can be seen away from home too.

I understand that UH has to put a limit and deadline to sign up for the bus ride to and from the stadium, but if other kids can find their way to and from, they should be allowed in.

  53. Stephen Tsai September 18, 2012 7:36 am

UH promised to reserve at least 5,000 seats for students.

Where you sit when you’re in the stadium, that’s another matter.

But 1,803 entered on a student pass.

  54. gigi-hawaii September 18, 2012 7:40 am

Don’t UH and Nevada have similar scenarios with their offensive coordinators?

Ault hired Rolo, but does the calls himself.

Same with Chow. He hired Tommy Lee, but does the calls himself, too.

  55. mo808 September 18, 2012 7:40 am

It was great to see the students there! I hope they had a good time, spread the word and bring more with them this week!

  56. chawan_cut September 18, 2012 7:41 am

kinda embarassing for the AF ROTC to be AWOL during pregame. i could just see the whole Ferris Bueller scene…. Bueller…? Bueller..??

  57. Kevin September 18, 2012 7:42 am

I dunno what happened exactly but I know what I saw.

On Saturday, I saw a long line of students waiting to get in to the student section only to be turned away. Later when I got to our seats it was clear the student section was not completly full.

Those other 100 something students were left to scatter in the North endzone seats above the marching band.

    Lucky it wasnt crowded otherwise……….

Yeah, they were confused and looked irritated.

  58. Kevin September 18, 2012 7:44 am

Students want to sit with students… If there is room, what is the problem?

  59. Ipu Man September 18, 2012 7:44 am

    Gigi…good point.

  60. Kevin September 18, 2012 7:45 am

And no Im not making it up.

Was waiting for friends buying food at the Leo’s Taverna stand next to the gate that feeds into the student section where the ushers check passes.

  61. Ipu Man September 18, 2012 7:50 am

Maybe the student ID UH cards did not match their driver license…

  62. gigi-hawaii September 18, 2012 7:54 am

The TV camera panned the students, who were really enthusiastic. The section looked great.

I didn’t see any Tsaikos in other sections, though.

  63. chawan_cut September 18, 2012 7:54 am

i believe the student ids now have their color photo on them.

  64. koakane September 18, 2012 8:01 am

morning warrior and wahine country:cool: looking clouzy but still no betta place to be eh

healing prayers to samia, first noticed him 😯 as a catcher on the saints baseball team. bruddah could hit plus being agile and mobile

imho gotta agree with #19 and tsai jr 🙂 assessment for going into the student section. students know each other, have fun, cheer loudly for the team and enjoy the game. they up and cheering when something is happening with no one yelling “sit down” or getting 😡 stink eye from the old people. it energetic so I no understand how jj sleeps thru this, one girl as why uncle sleeping and I told her he works hard. she ask what he does and I he works for the state gov’t then her boyfriend say no wonder 😆 the UH students no can catch a break. mmmm is there a moral to this bwhaaaaaaaaaaaa

20 plus years I had season tickets in the south end zone and 🙄 witnessed battles between adults over stupid stuffs. thats when we had good teams too but fights still occured. my young kids thought it was part of the game.

so no condemn the students, leave them alone and let them enjoy their college experience. I somewhat side with stretch on the college age drinking as long as its done responsibly. eh:wink: speaking only for myself plus who am I to make that call.

I have a question about the term “trickeration” as it pertains to Coach Chow’s offense.

What would a “trickeration” UH offensive play be?

  70. BigWave96744 September 18, 2012 8:52 am

Josh Donovan didn’t play, he didn’t even suit up, he was in street clothes like the other warriors in the stands..

He wears #35, just like Jared Leaf.

  71. letsgowarriors September 18, 2012 8:58 am

i wonder why they listed a player participation for #30. its not Pasoquen since hes out for the season.

  72. BigWave96744 September 18, 2012 9:00 am

    Who is Marcus Langkilde???

    This is Marcus Langkilde:

Thanks ST for the lead last month

Btw he is cousins with the Laurel Ohana

  73. d1shima September 18, 2012 9:12 am

    helencalif,

    Edwards’ one-man double reverse

  74. BigWave96744 September 18, 2012 9:31 am

    LGB, you are correct.

I was mistaking Josh for someone else I saw in the stands.

I didn’t know that Josh now wears #30, since Ryan Pasoquen is out for the season.

I actually got a picture of a #30 on the sideline and the UH stats showed he appeared in the game.

  75. Ipu Man September 18, 2012 9:32 am

    Big Wave, thanks. Great pics…

but don’t know about the bottom pic.

  76. madeinhawaii September 18, 2012 9:37 am

I don’t understand why Marcus Langkilde would be redshirting? Doesn’t he just have two to play two? Or are they counting on a medical redshirt year?

  77. Will-I-Am September 18, 2012 9:41 am

Is there room to expand the student section? I tried to go to a Patriot/Colts game once and they had “standing room only” seats for $150. Is there somewhere that they could have a standing room only student section? I doubt they want chairs in their way of their party anyway.

  78. warfan 808 September 18, 2012 9:48 am

I was concerned about our fanbase being absent during this game, I know it was Lamar but that is so important for or fans to fill more spaces in the stands wth , I hope for this more meaningful game people will show up…do people tailgate till halftime or wat.

  82. gigi-hawaii September 18, 2012 10:14 am

mahalo, Mike! Great talk by Kaumeyer. One of these days, I’ll attend a Na Koa luncheon. Sounds like fun.

  83. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 18, 2012 10:17 am

Good to hear UHAD will take out a full page Ka Leo ad. Students do read it.

I also suggested that UHAD send out a blast email message and maybe embed a video of Chow thanking students and faculty for attending the games. Email is so effective now especially with the transfer of UH email to gmail. Fast, broader audience, and best of all free.

  84. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 18, 2012 10:19 am

The Na Koa luncheon was good fun. They even had spicy ahi poke.

  85. PowderPuff September 18, 2012 10:20 am

Thanks, Mike…and many thanks to Gareth for taking such copious notes. Coach Kaumeyer did a great job yesterday, and it was interesting, even for the ladies in the crowd. Okay, NOT what you’re thinking, but the video and his explanations. I totally got what he was talking about the “D” playing vertical. And thought it was awesome that he said the coaching staff is going to let the recruits “say no to UH,” regardless of the amount of offers they have.

Yes, gigi…you should come. Nice to see sjmacro and myki. Like sj said yesterday, don’t forget about the early gametime meaning the Warrior Walk will be around 1:40.

  86. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 18, 2012 10:21 am

    @gigi-hawaii

Both Ault and Rolovich call the plays.

Chow calls plays why? Because he is in charge. It was written back in March, “Tommy Lee holds the title of offensive coordinator and, as such, will be a chief organizer, but Chow will handle the offense’s decision-making position.” Chow coaches the QB’s and what better person to call the plays than the mastermind himself.

  95. jimmy the lock September 18, 2012 10:53 am

Since there is no subpoena power will anyone show up to speak about the fiasco?

  96. jimmy the lock September 18, 2012 10:58 am

Pretty good, couple of weeks ago the Wahine VB lose to UCLA and move up a notch. This pass week they have a bye and move up a notch too.

Good luck Wahine VB tomorrow, Friday, and Saturday. GO WAHINE!

  97. jimmy the lock September 18, 2012 11:01 am

Fire! Good to have the cannon back, but they did misfire on a few scores.

  98. tommui September 18, 2012 11:02 am

    #95 jimmy the lock

The committee can always request subpoena powers from the legislature.

I cannot imagine the UH Administration getting the Legislature mad – but again, who knows?

  99. tommui September 18, 2012 11:06 am

    #92 Janice:

It could be the host (Kekaula) or Coach Chow concise articulation, but thought Inside Access was much better than last year’s coach show.

  100. jimmy the lock September 18, 2012 11:07 am

    @tommui

I like see the UH Admin show up late. And then respond to questions with “I don’t recall”.

All kidding aside, this should be interesting.

  101. jimmy the lock September 18, 2012 11:08 am

    @tommui

I would say it is Coach Chow’s concise articulation. 🙂

  102. madeinhawaii September 18, 2012 11:11 am

I’m not surprised that Ault and Chow call most of the shots. Winning are their priorities and as head coach you don’t give full reign to the OC in his first year unless he commands that kind of respect backed by a good number of successful years under his belt like Chow did. I expect Rolo to have more of a say in the play calling as the season unfolds. Tommy Lee, on the other hand, was brought in to be Chow’s eyes in the skies.

  103. LizKauai September 18, 2012 11:13 am

Papajoe- Morgan Freeman is not dead.

  104. Kevin September 18, 2012 11:15 am

  110. papajoe2 September 18, 2012 11:36 am

Appologies to Morgan Freeman and his friends and family. I saw it on FB but found out it was a hoax. So sorry as I was saddened by the news and got caught by the hoax.

  111. WarriorNY September 18, 2012 11:41 am

NY Jets…. Please sign Greg Salas!

  112. WarriorNY September 18, 2012 11:54 am

Speaking of the J-E-T-S, Royce Pollard is back on the practice squad!

  113. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 18, 2012 11:54 am

    #95,

The committee does have the power to issue subpoenas with the full force and effect of law. Subpoenas are not often used but they have been on numerous occasions in the past like the investigation of the hydrogen investment fun.

Whether or not the committee exercises those powers is another issue and one that is rather “complex” at this point in time.

  114. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 18, 2012 11:58 am

At this point in time it is just an informational hearing and not a investigation.

    http://www.capitol.hawaii.gov//session2012/hearingnotices/HEARING_SCA02_09-24-12_INFO_.HTM

  115. Warrior Dave September 18, 2012 12:07 pm

    ST,

I really like what you’re doing for Coach Chow’s weekly show. Keep it up!

I don’t mind red shirting freshmen but I always hold my breath if they coming back the following year or not More so with the players that leave for missions…

Coach Ault is so full of it. Beating Nevada is almost as satisfying as Boise St.

  116. Warrior Dave September 18, 2012 12:22 pm

Sad to hear Salas was released. That kid deserves to be given a chance. Don’t want him to go to the Jets. Too much drama.

  117. Slugger September 18, 2012 12:29 pm

    Yay for Royce!

  118. jimmy the lock September 18, 2012 12:29 pm

    @ iwonderwhytheyhateme

Unless something changed, from what I heard the Committee does not have subpoena powers. This is according to the Senate president’s office.

  119. RedZone September 18, 2012 12:46 pm

Ault is using Rolo as his eye in the sky and counting on Nick to help him see what the defense is doing when they try to pass. When Ault first picked up Rolo his intent was to let Rolo take care of the offense so that he could spend more time on the defense. Looks like it did not help the defense any and it seems like he still can’t let go of his offense. My pistol. Mine. I read somewhere that the last OC Ault trusted was Petrino.

  120. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 18, 2012 12:54 pm

    @119,

It appears so. I thought it was an actual investigation. It is nothing more than an “informational briefing.”

  121. papajoe2 September 18, 2012 1:16 pm

Concerning Greg Salas. I didn’t think that he would fit into the Patriots structured system although they got his former OC. Patriots rely on everyone being at an exact place at a certain time on the offense. Salas, coming from JJ or Mack’s system is more of a reaction on what the defense is doing. I think he is a very good receiver, but at this late point in the season whithout a preseason to join the Patriots just doesn’t fit in IMHO. He could be picked up later and assigned to their practice squad in the future, to learn more.

  122. LizKauai September 18, 2012 1:25 pm

    Ctl Ault Del

    GO WARRIORS!

    GO SALAS!

  123. Ryan_12177 September 18, 2012 1:25 pm

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Salas moved to the Patriots practice squad

  124. jimmy the lock September 18, 2012 1:29 pm

As a receiver you gotta adapt. Running routes or reacting to the defense you still need that quickness to change directions and mis-direct your defender. Good example is Bess, he doesn’t have blazing speed but can out-quick defenders to get open.

Anyway, best of luck to Salas.

  125. jimmy the lock September 18, 2012 1:31 pm

Or be like Jerry Rice, great pattern receiver.

  126. ALLAN September 18, 2012 2:01 pm

  141. oldtimer808 September 18, 2012 4:28 pm

#9 I think you misunderstood Coach Chow in his view on red shirts. If a freshman is good enough to play than he will use that player, however, there are many factors that we are not aware of that will put a player into the redshirt category. I think instead of shouting out challenging what Coach Chow said you should know there are things only the coaches know that is best for the student/athlete.

What concerns me is your attitude and tone in your blog not so much what you said but anyway, for better or for worse, hope you come around in being positive and supporting the UH.

Those of you who want to see some music selection changes can use this donation opportunity to address the topic.

  160. kev-1 September 18, 2012 9:21 pm

WTH?!?!?! Why would the Patriots trade for Salas only to release him after 2 weeks? That makes no sense. They must have had another need and Salas was the odd man out or something. People talk about Colt never getting a real shot after doing well in the preseason. Well, Salas had real game time last season and did really well before he got injured. And now he doesn’t even get a chance to play after being traded for? Makes no sense. Let’s hope that Salas doesn’t have a Colt NFL experience here. That’s messed up.

  161. jm2375 September 18, 2012 9:38 pm

Yeah, I saw they also brought back Branch – one of Brady’s all time favorite receivers. Not quite sure why they got rid of him anyway.

  164. jm2375 September 18, 2012 10:11 pm

ST – I see that that they’ve put the Warrior vb roster up on the website. Do you know which of the transfers has to redshirt this year? Over half the team is new. Wow. Guess that’s what happens when there’s only 4.5 scholarships to be split between 20+ players.

  165. kitsunegari September 18, 2012 10:19 pm
