Chow opens QB competition

By Stephen Tsai on November 10, 2012

In the aftermath of today’s loss to Boise State, UH coach Norm Chow said he will re-open the competition at quarterback between Sean Schroeder, who has started all nine games, and Jeremy Higgins. * * * * * This could be the last football meeting between Boise State, which heads to the Big East next year, and Hawaii. It is highly unlikely either would want to continue this series as non-conference opponents. Then again, with the constant realignments, don’t rule […]

All good

By Stephen Tsai on November 9, 2012

Feeling under the weather? The school that brought you cloned green mice has the cure. It’s called “Thursday.” That actually is the cutoff day for players wishing to play in a Saturday home game. Several key players resumed practicing yesterday. Wide receiver Trevor Davis, who is recovering from a neck strain, probably will be the only one not available. Also, safety Bubba Poueu-Luna, who would have been a factor in some sub-packages, is out with concussion-like symptoms. * * * […]

Health care

By Stephen Tsai on November 8, 2012

There is some concern as injuries appear to affect the way the Warriors practice. With receivers Chris Gant, Billy Ray Stutzmann and Trevor davis ailing yesterday, the Warriors eliminated the two-minute-dril session. Gant and Stutzmann are expected to be ready for Saturday’s game against Boise State. But missed time is missed time, and for a team whose offense needs to be in sync, every drill is important. It isn’t so much that the Warriors have more physical practices. There remains […]

Staying put

By Stephen Tsai on November 7, 2012

A lesson of elections is a lot more money is spent on the campaign than for the position sought. Consider the salaries of the U.S. President ($400,000), Honolulu  Mayor ($116,000) and U.S. Senator ($174,000). In that context, the amount spent in search of a new UH athletic director, while still unnecessarily high, is not unique. It would be simpler just to promote Rockne Freitas from acting AD to permanent AD. He’s the best candidate, and I don’t even know the […]

UH to play Michigan in 2016

By Stephen Tsai on November 6, 2012

The Warriors will be going to Michigan for a game in 2016. The Big House will pay big kala: UH will earn $1 million for the appearance, according to sources. Credit Rockne Freitas for arranging this deal. Freitas said he played at the Big House twice – with Oregon State and an NFL exhibition when he was with the Detroit Lions. * * * * * It’s Election Day, which means the polls are open and UH is closed. It […]

Change of pace

By Stephen Tsai on November 5, 2012

The Warriors’ weekly scrimmage goes on hiatus for a week. Instead of practicing today, as they have on past Mondays, the Warriors will work only on conditioning drills and lifting sessions today. The intent is twofold: 1) It’s late in the season and there are numerous injuries; and 2) it’s a change-up from the usual practice schedule. The Warriors will have a full, physical practice tomorrow.

Feeling blue

By Stephen Tsai on November 4, 2012

The blue period might be coming to an end. After Saturday’s nationally televised game against Boise State, the Warriors and Broncos might not meet again for a long time. This is the Broncos’ final year in the Mountain West Conference. Neither team appears interested in meeting in a regular-season game. The Broncos don’t like to interrupt their regular season with a trip this far away, particularly once they begin playing a Big East schedule. And politeness aside, nobody likes to […]

Game day: Fresno State

By Stephen Tsai on November 3, 2012

Things to know about today’s game: • The Bulldogs, who enter as 33.5-point favorites, are averaging 50 points and 555 yards at Bulldog Stadium. • The Warriors have won the last three meetings at Bulldog Stadium. * * * * * * Scenes from yesterday’s walk-through: Darius Bright Mike Edwards Ne’Quan Phillips
