All good

Feeling under the weather?

The school that brought you cloned green mice has the cure. It’s called “Thursday.” That actually is the cutoff day for players wishing to play in a Saturday home game. Several key players resumed practicing yesterday. Wide receiver Trevor Davis, who is recovering from a neck strain, probably will be the only one not available. Also, safety Bubba Poueu-Luna, who would have been a factor in some sub-packages, is out with concussion-like symptoms.

* * * * *

Sounds like the Temple game will be a go. The matter is now at the upper level. After that, the contract must be sent to Temple for signatures.

* * * * * *

Now that arrests have been made and the Wonder mess will be put to rest, a lesson should be learned. No, it’s not about money transactions or background checks. It’s about marketing. Imagine if the concert actually were to occur. Marketing and promotions — I forget which is which — were horrible. How could there have been only 5,000 tickets sold?

tsai, tell the coaches to go after RB Wesley Bullock from Tampa Plant, same HS as Allen Sampson. i know we have lots of RBs, but he could be a steal bc he is so undersized.

  11. MattyBoy November 9, 2012 9:27 am

They’re actually gonna go through with the Temple game? Oh no. Just let the season be over with already. Can’t stand to see another blowout loss again. Chow just does not have his team ready to play come game time. Teams playing us know we’re an automatic win for them. Another repeat of the Von Appen era.

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:

I think the lesson learned was nice guys finish last…the nice guys got burned. JD was nice to allow RS to run the show, RS believed in RP making the right connections, RP filed for bankruptcy as a result, UH lost the dough, and MRCG has a black mark on her resume, TA kind of looked incompetent, etc. Is HW in the clear?? She is the only one who got some money and has not been arrested. The only people that made out are….lawyers!

Don’t know what the MWC rules are but logically you would expect the Warriors to switch sides. Or based on the just finished elections, mathematically one would know that switching sides is the right thing to do.

Hold on hold on, you need to use Nate Silver math instead of Romney math.

    GO WARRIORS!

After S. Alabama, we can focus on recruiting and healing some of the injuries and getting players ready for finals.

Better days to come next year when Graham takes the control of offense.

Nah, no need the Temple game but if going get the game so be it. Let them work out the logistics.

I think the Wonder Concert would have been a sellout. Sales would have picked up once the military surveillance drones sniffed it out.

  25. SteveM November 9, 2012 10:45 am

    Good morning everyone!

ST — even would good marketing, who would dare organize a fund raising concert now, especially with a leader like “throw you under the bus” Greenwood?

WonderGate is not over as long as Greenwood remains president.

  26. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 9, 2012 10:50 am

Concert involving SOS or Jordan Segundo may need creative and intense marketing. Concert with Wonder or Dion etc, no not so much imo.

Military surveillance drones would indeed pick it up bwaha.

  34. SteveM November 9, 2012 11:14 am

IWWTHM — I may have missed some of the HNN reports you refer to, but the talk of inconsistencies in any bureaucratic department/branch/organization and commercial enterprises are always there… if you go hunting for it. It is the “if everyone is wrong, then no ONE is to blame” scenario.

I believe Annoddah Dave could explain these things better. 🙂

ST, because they were a lot of people like me whose first response was “Nah, why would Stevie Wonder do a fundraiser for UH athletics?

  38. SailorBlue November 9, 2012 12:04 pm

Morning all ~ just a reminder, that no matter win or lose the tailgating goes on! Normal start time (early crew will be arriving at about 9) and normal place (Cabana A at Rainbow Bay Marina). However, with the early game we will be closing up shop early (~1230). So come early with your brunch items. See everybody tomorrow.

  39. John Fitzgerald Byers November 9, 2012 12:06 pm

there were much more people that didnt know about it. marketing at the UH is just bad and its funny for those that only now question why stevie wonder would ever do a concert for the UH.

The few people that heard about it never questioned it and much more people, even avid uh season ticket holders never heard about it until late.

why only five thousand sold? bad marketing thats why.

Wasn’t the reason more tickets weren’t sold because initial offering was for only season ticket holders? There was minimal advertising early on when it was almost a word of mouth and Hawaii Athletics websit posting thing.

  45. 3-Prong November 9, 2012 12:20 pm

Eh, you saw SAW or what? Thought bet ban was ova.

  46. Chicken Grease November 9, 2012 12:39 pm

The only thing prWIEventing a GrWIEase from feeling sorWIE or having sympathWIE for anyone on the UH side (sorry, including Donovan) is:

    1) These folks are considered “movers and shakers” of the community. They’re the type who, when they come up with the idea, others in an influential capacity come around to make it happen, which brWIEngs a Grease to what a Grease hath mentioned before about this situWIEson . . .

    2) CANNOT, CANNOT, CANNOT absolutely REFUSE to believe that no one, NO ONE high up involved with UH was able to call Wonder’s management directly and ask for charity concert. The pitch would’ve been delicious to WIEnder himself — “you know, Stevie, the Dalai Lama was just there at the Stan Sheriff himself.” And in all of Wonder’s “all God’s children, all the people in the world”-ness (apologies to Eddie Murphy here) might’ve come on that fact alone. Sounds like a stretch, but if a nobody like Grease can think of that, how come the six figure salaried come up with something a bit more creative.

THIS includes the UH six figured NOT getting Tom Moffitt involved, too. With such a big act? Moffitt’s simply the man. Not procuring his services was an f-up, too.

    3) This might contradict # 2, but a Grease no care. The most puzzling part: WHY [read: WIE] Stevie Wonder??????? Of all the acts in the world, a Grease simply wouldn’t have had Wonder on the long list of “big celebrity musicians who’d simply ecstatic about doing a concert to raise money for UH athletics.” I mean, look at the pattern of acts that have been held there — Dalai Lama (OK. Pacific rim-based); Miss Universe (heck, Hawaii got more diversity than any state in the union; should have Miss Universe here EVERY year). Stevie Wonder (an owl coos). It’s like a sequence test: which of these do not belong:

    University of Hawaii – Manoa

    Stan Sheriff Center

    Stevie Wonder

So, yeah. Doesn’t the whole deal from the start sound so bull$#17?

SAWARRIOR — just come back on Tuesday, bwahaaahaahahahahah!!!!

  48. Bowwar November 9, 2012 12:46 pm

Our Marketing department for UH athletics has ALWAYS sucked over the years…Actually, I think the best marketing for the entire department occurred when JJ was here and having his agent’s firm doing some of the marketing duties. Looks like everything is “regressing” at UH…I’m glad Donovan is out, but I don’t think UH should have cut him deal to “stick around”. Pay him off and tell him to get lost…That’s kinda what Donovan did to Wags and others over his UH athletic department career.

  49. gobows November 9, 2012 12:49 pm

#46 black eyed peas would have been a better fit for the students. seeing musicians past their prime (and sober) is not always a good thing. rolling stones can’t even remember the words to their songs.

  53. Bowwar November 9, 2012 1:09 pm

Wags was fired by Hugh, but Jim was the trigger-man. Also offered Wallace a “two-for-one” offer after he spoke out against Wags’ firing.

  54. Bowwar November 9, 2012 1:13 pm

I agree, Black-eyed Peas or some other contemporary group would appeal more to the younger crowd and the public in general. It doesn’t have to be just one concert, but a series of concerts before or after football games that could be used to generate income. In the old days, they used to have the Kanikapila concerts in Andrews Amphetheatre staged by Peter Moon. Wouldn’t it be nice to have those concerts revived at Stan Sheriff to benefit UH athletics??

  55. cocobean November 9, 2012 1:15 pm

    Boise is beatable.

I hope the game is not a tough sell for walkups. My seat mate decided not to go. Had to call three friends before one said he’d go if I picked him up. The other two, who at one time were season ticket holders, flatly said no.

  56. EelWolf November 9, 2012 1:15 pm

Like #44 said, ticket sales had only been going on to the general public for a day or two before everything collapsed. UH was only selling to season-ticket holders, corporate partners, etc. at first. Hence why the marketing push to the public had only just started. Hard to critique the sales figures when they were barely even on sale to the public. It would of been a sell-out no doubt.

  57. Kevin November 9, 2012 1:24 pm

Last concert I went to at the Andrews Ampitheater was when Tool came down in 2001. Sold out in a matter of days.

I believe the typical “noise” complaint from houses blocks away stopped anymore concerts from happening there.

They used to have young-relavent acts like Green Day and No Doubt back in the mid 90s.

  58. madeinhawaii November 9, 2012 1:31 pm

Only 5,000 were sold cause they had to hold the rest for complimentary purposes.. 😉

  59. Shoko November 9, 2012 1:32 pm

Interesting prediction by CBS Sports Mike Dodd. He says, should Oregon win the National Championship and the NFL comes a calling (again), there’s a good chance that Chip Kelly would be NFL bound. The question that arises would be who is going to replace him.

    Coach Petersen?

    http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/blog/dennis-dodd/20900771/bellotti-inevitable-that-chip-kelly-leaves-for-the-nfl

Interesting development regarding the Lakers. Word on the street is Phil Jackson had already canceled a speaking engagement for next week, citing last-minute development.

  60. madeinhawaii November 9, 2012 1:32 pm

After all… approximately 1/4 of all tickets issued to the football games were comps…

  61. affiliate marketing November 9, 2012 1:42 pm

Its like you read my mind! You seem to understand a lot approximately this, such as you wrote the e-book in it or something. I think that you can do with a few p.c. to power the message home a bit, however instead of that, this is great blog. An excellent read. I’ll definitely be back.

  62. Bowwar November 9, 2012 1:44 pm

#57: I understand the problem with Andrews, as it was the same complaint in the 70s and 80s too. So why, can’t these concerts be held at SSC? I thought the “on-campus” concerts added to “student-life” and made it less of a “commuter campus”. I thought they used Kennedy Theatre more often in the past than they do now too.

  63. Bowwar November 9, 2012 1:46 pm

Shoko: Rumor also has it that Kelly is going to the NFL because of the on-going NCAA investigation of Oregon recruiting violations.

  66. (Jesse) James November 9, 2012 2:32 pm

#62 SSC can’t hold concerts partly because when the SSC was built, there was an agreement reached with the city to give them so called “right of first refusal” meaning that the SSC could not compete with the Blaisdell for concerts and other events. In a simplified way, the SSC has to let the Blaisdell have first dibs on concerts etc. If the Blaisdell can’t accommodate the event, then the SSC can get it.

  67. (Jesse) James November 9, 2012 2:32 pm

Good afternoon Tsaikos!!! Hope to see you at tomorrow’s T-gate.

  68. Kevin November 9, 2012 2:35 pm

    First dibs….. 🙄

  69. Kevin November 9, 2012 2:36 pm

The SSC is light years ahead of the Blaisdell. Any concert or performance act just needs to do a 2 minute tour of each arena and the choice is obvious.

    … if this hasn’t been posted …

Buffalo activates former UH safety Mana Silva

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. >> The Buffalo Bills activated safety Mana Silva from the practice squad and cut safety Delano Howell in preparation for Sunday’s game vs. New England (5-3).

Silva entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Hawaii with Baltimore in July 2011 and spent a portion of last season with the Bills practice squad before signing on to the Dallas 53-man roster. He played two games with the Cowboys last season, making three tackles, and three games this season, making two tackles.

Silva, a Kamehameha-Hawaii graduate who rejoined the Bills practice squad Oct. 2, holds the UH school record for interceptions.

The Bills will face a Patriots team that has posted an NFL-best 262 points.

    Boise is beatable.

How’s this for an old time local expression to describe how many Warrior fans are feeling.

When I asked my seat mate why he didn’t want to use his ticket for Boise. He said ” kill fight already.” Being local I understood what he meant.

    Many fans Kill fight already.

Mr. Grease, I saw your posts… I will follow up soon… I’m just too freakin’ tired right now…

I just gotta say, SAWarrior is a man of his word on our friendly wager… (And I hope that’s the last political related post I’ll make for 4 years..)

Warrior Basketball has good team chemistry. The team worked hard on defense which was good to see. Good win tonight but needs to work on turning over the ball and breaking pressure. I think this team was exposed as far as being pressured full court.

I would have come to the Wonder Concert.

Great flight over with the Matagiese Ohana today. Laau lapaau works another kind of wonder.

    Heal and Win, WARRIORS!

  109. Chicken Grease November 9, 2012 10:10 pm

    # 105 WarriorNWIE (OK, OK, that was the last “WarriorNY”-“WarriorNWIE” usage for a while), good to finally see some of your postings. Yeah, just take care what you have to, people here un’erstand and all.

Think SAWARRIOR is a man of his word and them some. Cripes, he been away so long, it’s almost time for the 2016 presidential election[!] Only gonna crack wise at ya ’til ya come back, SAWARRIOR, hahahaah! [!]

LizKauai, thanks again to you, mo808, SteveM and others for your gracious invite. Have fun for a Grease, OK? You cats’ll have great fun regardless 😉 .

I think Jimmy Borges iced out all of us tonight, re: b-ball Warrior opener (who was that opponent, now? 50 Shades of Shoreline at Maryland University, something, some odd? What’s their cheer? “Go Discount Store crayon crimson” by the way). The HECK was all that, he thought he was filming 5-0 or something? Cripes, he made Diane Sawyer this past Tuesday election night look like Helen Keller, sheesh.

  128. Kevin November 10, 2012 6:06 am

Was watching the basketball replay and Borges didnt disappoint.

    Hawaii’s first man of Jazz?

    More like Hawaii’s first DIVA.

Couldnt believe he used the opportunity to sung the national anthem like his own private lounge act. Most disrespectful thing I have ever seen.

Hey Borges, it was your last time singing the national anthem and reality says no one gave a crap.

  129. Kevin November 10, 2012 6:10 am

Oh, I apologize.. He’s Jimmy Borges and old out dated acts like him get a “pass” in Hawaii to do whatever the hell they want to feed an ego that outlasted their actual relevance…. 🙄

Didn’t hear Borges’ rendition of the National Anthem.

We honor our notibly this weekend that provides the first admendment right for Mr. Borges’s to do that.

Not saying it’s right, but because he can.

I honor our heroes that vowed to Duty, Honor and Country.

Glad Coach Chow and the team will be expressing their honor in todays game.

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

Hey, have respect for the aged! I wish at my age – higher than that of Jimmy Borges – that I could sing as well as Jimmy.

Whether it is the black keys or the white keys, mine is in the cracks.
