UH considers another long-snapper

By Stephen Tsai on July 20, 2013

The son of San Jose State’s head baseball coach is expected to join the Rainbow Warrior football team as a long-snapper. Brodie Nakama is a recent graduate of Saint Francis High in Mountain View, Calif. The San Jose Mercury News  selected Nakama to his division’s all-star second team as an offensive lineman. Nakama’s ETA depends on when Brian Hittner, considered to be the favorite at long-snapper, meets the requirements to play this season. Nakama’s father is Dave Nakama, a Kaiser […]

Head cases

By Stephen Tsai on July 19, 2013

The past couple of days, the Rainbow Warriors have had their heads examined. It’s actually part of a method that will be helpful in diagnosing future concussions. Each player will undergo several tests, including those measuring quickness in reading comprehension and reflexes. The results are known as base lines. If a player later suffers an impact to the head that results in  dizziness, nausea or other such concussion-like symptoms, he will undergo similar tests. The results of the post-impact tests […]

Program provides a boost

By Stephen Tsai on July 18, 2013

It was a pleasant surprise  last month when linebacker Tevita Lataimua, who was all but ruled out, met the requirements to play for the Rainbow Warriors this year. What wasn’t a surprise was that LEMO had produced another successful graduate. LEMO is a not-for-profit, California-based foundation that offers a program  for youths assisting in academics, athletics and life skills. It’s a full menu, requiring youths to focus on all areas. There is no fee to participate. Lataimua credited LEMO with […]

DE interested in UH

By Stephen Tsai on July 17, 2013

The Rainbow Warriors are proving there is no offseason for recruiting. A defensive end who was on a BCS roster this past spring has expressed strong interest in joining the Warriors. The player and his grandmother are scheduled to visit Hawaii next week. The player had made a verbal commitment to a BCS school, changed his mind, and  then accepted a scholarship offer from a second BCS school. He participated in this past spring ball. After that, he requested — […]

Bowens set to report

By Stephen Tsai on July 16, 2013

After a few double-esses in the proverbial road, receiver/cornerback Kwamane Bowens has navigated his way to the Manoa campus. Bowens has received notification of his acceptance into UH. He will report on July 31, the first day of training camp for freshman recruits. Bowens, of Salem High in Virginia Beach, received multiple offers, including from Virginia Tech. He signed with UH in early March. Here are his highlights: Bowens video While the other freshman prospects were enrolled in the bridge-session […]

Snap decisions

By Stephen Tsai on July 15, 2013

With training camp opening in 16 days, the Rainbow Warriors still are awaiting confirmation of long-snapper Brian Hittner’s eligibility. Hittner was supposed to join the Warriors for the 2012 season, but there was a glitch in calculating his transferrable credits. He also did not participate in this past spring ball. Hittner has the edge because of his experience (a year of long-snapping at Saddleback College). Freshman long-snapper Tyler Liana and JR Colton will compete, but their reporting dates have not […]

QB or not QB; LB won’t play for UH

By Stephen Tsai on July 14, 2013

The Rainbow Warriors are mulling whether to add a quarterback transfer to the training-camp roster. The potential transfer appears to fit the criteria: He’s skilled and he would have to redshirt this year. In HR-speak, the former quality is a minimum requirement, the latter is a preferred requirement. The Warriors are seeking a quarterback to run the scout offense against the No. 1 defense in practices this fall. The Warriors have four quarterbacks on the roster. None is considered a […]
