Be safe

By Stephen Tsai on July 29, 2013

Let’s take a break from UH sports chatter to focus on the weather today. You can get your Flossie updates at your favorite newspaper Web site: Star-Advertiser * * * * * Michael Tsai is a great writer, teacher and, most of all person. He’s also a year older today. Happy birthday, bro.

Hitting the ground running

By Stephen Tsai on July 28, 2013

Forget the SAT or ACT. The toughest entrance exam is the CBT — Coach (Gary) Beemer Test. Except for late-arriving transfers, every Rainbow Warrior — incoming freshmen included — must pass a conditioning test in order to earn entry into training camp, which begins this week. Here’s the test: 300 yards of continuous sprints (between 60-yard points), a two-minute break, followed by another 300 yards of continuous sprints. So-called skilled-position players must complete each 300-yard shuttle in 48 seconds, big-skilled […]

Defensive end Naim Mustafaa has applied for enrollment at the University of Hawaii and is scheduled to arrive in Honolulu this Wednesday,  the same day first-year Rainbow Warriors are required to report to training camp. Mustafaa is paying his own travel expenses to Hawaii. There is a football scholarship available for Mustafaa if he chooses to join the Warriors. Mustafaa earned a 4-star rating after receiving scholarship offers from Georgia, Georgia Tech, Tennessee, Auburn, Florida and Florida State. He chose […]

It’s a wrap

The offseason conditioning program concludes today with the final round of testing in strength and speed drills. It also is the last chance for a player to best Saui Matagiese for the largest biceps. He’s unofficially at 53 centimeters. Testing was spaced this week because of the gap between the end of the first summer-school session and the start of next week’s training camp. Per NCAA rule, scholarship checks are not distributed when a player is not enrolled in classes, […]

Iosefa update

By Stephen Tsai on July 25, 2013

Running back Joey Iosefa received hopeful news when he was diagnosed with “only” a displaced foot fracture. It had been feared the injury was worse and would require surgery. Instead, Iosefa is wearing a walking boot and receiving treatment several times a day. He will not require surgery, at least at this time. The development opens the way for Iosefa possibly being available for the opener against USC in exactly five weeks. Iosefa suffered the injury during conditioning drills this […]

Happy birthday to us

By Stephen Tsai on July 24, 2013

That’s right, the Warrior Beat turns 7 today. We’ve had a great time through the years, especially embracing the four Fs — football, food, family and fun. We’ve made friends, and we’ve lost loved ones. Like all families, we’ve had our share of spats, and we’ve endured the occasional crazy uncle who just doesn’t know when to step away from the keyboard. But in the end, we’re in this together, and we embrace the good, the loyal and, of course, […]

MWC Media Preview — Day 2

By Stephen Tsai on July 23, 2013

The Rainbow Warriors anticipate losing running back Joey Iosefa, who suffered a foot injury, for a significant period. How long? That depends on test results and his rehabilitation. Freshman running backs Diocemy Saint Juste, Aofaga Wily and Steven Lakalaka (who redshirted in 2012) have accepted the challenge. Willis Wilson, a transfer from Washington, and Levi Wilson, who was at College of San Mateo, also could be in the mix. * * * * * It was no surprise Boise State’s Chris […]
